[Q] Phone Number Formatting (Dashes) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I realize this question gets asked over and over, BUT HEAR ME OUT:
I've done extensive searches online on how to change my number format from the american xxx-xxx-xxx to my country's (Argentina) format. Everyone, everywhere answers MoreLocale 2, and everyone answers "OMG. That's exactly what I wanted!!!" Except that's now what I am looking for. There are plenty of websites that tell you to write these numbers down in my google contacts with that format, except that's not what I'm looking for.:
You see, MoreLocale 2 changes the standard American formatting xxx-xxx-xxx to xxxxxxxxx when I select Argentina which is NO FORMATTING once so ever. Even Brazil and Chile and Uruguay, which have the same format gives the same result.
I want my numbers to be formatted xxxx-xxxx.
I want to know if anyone knows a way (even manual system file editing) that will allow me to have all numbers entered into a dialer formatted xxxx-xxxx-xxxx.
Sorry for the rant, but I've lost hours online and all I can find is people praising MoreLocale2 for removing the dashes.. I don't want them removed, I want to change the PLACES where these dashes go...

Anyone?

You'd think this was an easy problem for people here at xda...

built in word recognizor

is it possible to update or reload a differnet version of this as i must have a joke one that prompts words such as personallyydueurufjdd. its just gibberish - anyone else have this on 4.16?? maybe a move to new qtek or 3.15.15 is better?
Did you get any hints on that one?
This would also be very important for users who want to write foreign language text on their devices (EG a frenchman wants to write english emails or vice versa). Entering text in another than the OS default language using the word recognizer really sucks.
Does anybody know wich files belong to the recognition system, so we could download them to a PC and examine? Maybe we could make a little "language file excange" out of it?

remove phone numbers formatting (dashes)

Hello,
Me and my trusty G1 have recently moved out of the US. Im running CM's latest, and just like the stock ROM, phone numbers stored in the phone have the xxx-xxx-xxxx US format. This format does not apply to most countries outside of the US. So here when someone calls (or when im trying to add a new contact) phone numbers tend to look weird since phone numbers here have an XX-XXX-XXX format (8 digits total), and so they end up showing as XXX-XXX-XX, which is just confusing.
So in short, is there any way to stop the dashes from showing up in the call log/ caller id/adding new contact form??
Thanks alot!!
No one has the same problem or has heard of a fix to this???
Hi, my G1 & I moved out of the US recently, too. The way I did it was to change all the numbers while logged in to Gmail in my browser. It was tedious but it lets you use a proper keyboard and mouse instead of trying to do it on the phone. All you really need to do is type the new prefix/country code once, and then cut and paste it in front of all the US numbers. Gmail will then just push it out to the phone right away. Hope this helps...
My biggest concern isn't fixing the already existing numbers in my phone book. My concern is when adding a new number or when someone not in my phone book calls, the number looks confusing because of the existence of the dashes.
But thanks anyway for your suggestion.
I have MoreLocale2 installed and when i changed it to my language i got the correct formatting.
Hey I just wanted to bump this thread to point out that morelocale 2 worked like a charm! so thanks a lot for the suggestion
Sorry to bump an old thread but i'm having exactly the same problem and its driving me mad I cant get MyLocale 2 working, it doesn't take the dashes from my numbers
Old thread, but might help someone: I also had the dash problem although in Gmail my contacts had no dashes. Changing the locale from US to UK removed the dashes for me (Home/Settings/Locale and Text/Select locale/ English (UK)).

Thanks aygunes, this is a realy easy solution to have the numbers format without dashes.
Find a way to export your contacts to a CSV file or a single vCARD file. Then you can just use something like a shell command:
Code:
cat file.csv | tr -d '-' > cleanfile.csv
or just edit the resulting file with any text editor and import back. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417184
[EDIT] I forgot that probably ALL phone numbers are stored without dashes in the (latest) contacts database.

I have a similar issue. I'm in Brazil and I'm using a Galaxy S 3 that I bought in US. Our numbers are stored as (XXX)prefix-XXXX-XXXX.
When I receive a sms or a call it doesnt show my contact name... only the numbers. How can I change this?
A friend has a S3 he bought in here... when he dials any number they appear without dashes and spaces like this XXXXXXXX. When I dial it appears XX XXXX-XX.
Anyone could help?

[Q] Question about default.prop

Hi,
I'm having a few minor problems with the Android Market since rooting. For example, a game I paid for called "My Paper Plane 2" is nolonger available to download even though the trial/demo is available.
I've tried a lot of the fixes on this forum and with no success so far and while looking through the contents of default.prop and build.prop I found something that I wondered if an entry in the default.prop file might be contributing to this problem.
This is the line I am wondering about in default.prop
ro.product.locale.region=US
I did a bit of googling on the phrase "ro.product.locale.region=" and noticed that this line varies....
ro.product.locale.region=IT
ro.product.locale.region=FR
ro.product.locale.region=GB
...as a few examples.
As I'm based in the UK, could this be why the market isn't showing all the apps I would expect. Should I edit the file (I've pulled a copy off the phone but thought I'd ask the question here before pushing it back just to err on the safe side) to GB and reboot? Or has anyone else got any suggestions on what might be causing this?
As a few more examples, I can't also find the demo of Touchdown but I can see the full paid app.
And another game called Armageddon Squadron doesn't appear either.
And a program suggested to search for on this website...
careace.net/2010/06/16/how-to-fix-protected-android-market-app/
"Dr Droid"
...well, I can see the demo but not the full paid version.
You need to modify build.prop/default.prop for valid
ro.build.fingerprint=xxxxxxxxxx
for the UK market. Your OS version might be not authorised for the UK market yet.
For the Japan market I've had to use the fingerprint from the older OS.
Hi and thanks for the reply wildthing_san,
I've pulled a copy of the build and default files from an original X10i that I issues to one of my directors which looks like this...
ro.build.fingerprint=SEMC/X10_1235-7379/SonyEricssonX10i/es209ra:1.6/R2BA020/1274691689:user/rel-keys
And from looking at this forum page...
http :// forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711907&page=239
...the bit that looks important seems to be the bit I bolded.
However, on checking through the default file, there are a couple of other references to this like...
ro.semc.version.cust=1235-7379
ro.product.name=X10_1235-7379
I also can't find any reference to that number in the build file.
So my question is, (in a kind of is it safe way) should I just update the default file finger print in my phone to include that 1235-7379 reference, i.e. change it from....
ro.build.fingerprint=SEMC/X10_1232-9897/SonyEricssonX10i/es209ra:1.6/R2BA024/1276581782:user/rel-keys
to...
ro.build.fingerprint=SEMC/X10_1235-7379/SonyEricssonX10i/es209ra:1.6/R2BA024/1276581782:user/rel-keys
...and ignore those other references or change those as well?
EDIT: Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you my friend.
Your suggestions were spot on, I did basically what I was wondering above including the extra two changes to the version and name and everything works spot on!!!!
Thanks again mate! Really appreciate the help/advice.
Might have spoken too soon. Some apps have come back. But not all. Still missing one polarbit game and strangely a couple of unimportant free apps. Trying the clears cache trick and will wait 24hrs to see if things continue to improve. My Paper plane 2 is back atleast
Sorry for hijacking your thread sligthly, I would appreciate it if somebody could upload a Nordic, or preferrably Swedish default.prop.
Im curious to see what the following lines looks like
ro.semc.country=
ro.semc.locale.language=
ro.semc.locale.region=
Anyone ?
Please ??

[resolved] using multiple/foreign language dictionaries?

First of all, thanks for this forum -- rooted my NT (first android device) yesterday using the instructions here and it's delightful.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had a solution or workaround for using multiple dictionaries?
I'd like to be able to read foreign language content using the instant lookup function, but it seems that this is not built into the nook (unbelievable). Being able to replace the default English-English dictionary would also be great. Although this is a feature on the Kindle, it isn't available on the Kindle for Android app (also unbelievable). I looked at other eReader software, but "dictionary support" seems to amount to ColorDict. I'd be more than happy to splash out for some quality dictionaries, but only if I can integrate them into the reader.
The only thing I've been able to find is this, a Russian language forum where the OP seems to have gone into the file system and manually replaced the stock dictionary. I'll gladly do that if it comes down to it but was wondering if there was a less tedious / more obvious way.

I tried to figure out how to change the language to German last night, but had no lucky at it. ("ro.sys.locale.language" is set to "de", as well as the country code is "DE" but yet nothing has changed.)
I think that the B&N Nook shows an incredible lack of foreign language support, and is basically I guess targeted as a "US only" device. This probably explains why the Out Of Box Experience only presents one with US timezones when it starts up. v_v
So frustrating/ridiculous! Yes, it's a "US device" but it's foolish of B&N to ignore the tens of millions of people in the US who speak or study other languages (Spanish speakers alone are pushing 30 million).
I hope the hack I mentioned in my original post works. Still waiting on my SD card to try it out.
Anyway, I posted on the B&N forums about this:

If anyone agrees please click the laurel leaf icon so that this issue can (maybe) get some attention.
I agree... it actually upsets me quite often that US companies typically completely ignore other languages within the US.
Apple? First thing it asks me is "what language do you want to use?" They built that flexibility in from the start. On Windows? You buy the English version, and you're stuck with English (yes, Vista and later, you can download language packs after). So, then end up having to customize and sell different copies of the OS to every different market.
OSX: we build one binary, and hey, look it works.
Windows: we have to build a different binary for every different language, and oh, some of them might not work, because English is treated specially from all of the other languages.
Posting in case someone finds it helpful
My personal workaround for the time being --
I downloaded the German version of Kindle for Android, which comes with a built-in monolingual Duden dictionary. (Fortunately my German is strong enough for this to work. Quite useless for other languages/ability levels though.)
The downloaded dictionary appears to be visible in the file system with *.mpb and *.prc file extensions. I wonder if it would be possible simply to manually swap them out with a dictionary in the same format?
Install coolreader and colordict, then downlowd whatever dictionaries you need. There are many dictionaries available online.
@wwmhf -- After reading your post I decided to dig a little deeper. I downloaded GoldenDict and then discovered lingvodics.com.
Okay, absolutely no more angst over this issue. Thanks!

Hello could you please update the title and add [resolved] at the start.
Thanks

Hi, try d/l an app from the market called more locale. Don't know if that suit your need of the dictionary thing, but definitely give your NT more locale to choose from (with most of the menus and some system apps name translated).
I'm on a rooted device with snowball mod in HK and wanted to play with the google voice search function for Cantonese and find no way of activating it since I can't choose any language apart from English US and UK (duh....)
After installing the more local app, I can select google voice to work with Cantonese search.
Perhaps Veronica can considering putting this under the NT Tips and Trick sticky for other poor souls that need an alternate locale.

Hey pal... I´m thinking about buying a Nook Touch. It´s cheaper and more beautiful than eReaders available in Germany. Nonetheless, I´m Brazilian - neither English nor German is my native language. I would like to have this Duden Dictionary for German books and whatever the original platform has for the english language.
How could I do that? Would you make a tutorial step-by-step for me? I´m totally rookie on these issues.
Thanks!

[Q] Storing and Displaying Phone Numbers Without Spaces

>
I have Nexus 4 and ever since I bought it, it saves all phone numbers with spaces between the digits (like +44 555 555 5555 etc.)
Does anyone know how to have these numbers with no spaces in between? I tried changing the language to English US, English UK and English Autsralia... etc. but no luck with that!!
It really bothers me as well as so many people out there as I found many people complaining about the same issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43017626

Can someone tell us how to solve this issue please?
Thanks.

I don't think that this behaviour can be changed in the stock application.
And just asking, what problem do you face with these spaces?

Whenever I copy the phone numbers to paste them on any other applications, I have to go back and delete those spaces (bcuz these applications won't work with the spaces in between).
