I am on AT&T in the US - and ever since I switched to an ICS ROM (either CM9 or Samsung's official) I am unable to get my network speeds via any speedtest app. I have tried Speedtest.net, Xtremelabs Speedtest, and the FCC Test app.
I will get decent ping speeds, and then the download test hangs and i never get more than 60kbps as a result, but my upload speeds are always very high, higher than they normally are.
Anyone else experiencing the same problem?
I had a similar problem with ICS ROMs. Speeds were very, very low (compared to GB ROMs with KL1 and KI4 modems). The phone was very sluggish when using the browser, Play Store, and several news apps. But like you said, upload speeds would pop real high, to something like 4 Mbps, then drop to near zero. The "Restart Test" button wouldn't come up for about two minutes. I tried about 20 different APN configs to no avail.
Now that I am back on GB, the phone screams. I haven't yet figured out if it is a custom ROM or an ICS modem issue.

Well the phone seems fine in regards to speeds. It's when I run the speedtest that it records a ridiculous speed. I think it must be something with ICS ROMs and how the speedtest app runs tests

jerdog, when testing XWLPU, I had this same issue. Running a test within the Speedtest.net app the download test hangs, and reports a ridiculously low speed when it's finished, but ping and upload seem normal.
Speeds otherwise seem fine browsing and downloading stuff, and if I run a speed test on a web page (like from Speedtest.net the actual web page via the Flash plug-in, instead of the app), the download speeds are likewise fine. It seems it is only broken in the app.
Did you ever figure out what the deal was?
PS- apologies for the super bump.

It would seem that you need to remove the proxy settings and then things were fine IIRC.

Thx for the info. I'll try it again next version of ICS I test.
Edit: sorry... Proxy settings from where? The APN?
Edit 2: it was indeed the proxy settings in the APN. once I removed the proxy, the speed test work just fine. Thx jerdog.

So I was playing around and pissed because I could not sync one of my programs do to data packets dropping like mad on my phone. This is Windows Mobile 6.1 BTW. I went into with resco registry editior and changed HKLM\Comm\Tcpip\Parms and changed the TimerWheelSize to Value of 5 and soft reset via software reset. (Like Psshutxp) Now the phone is off the hook and netfront is super smokin' fast as well as my company programs syncs now. Give it a shot and let me know your results. Attached is a resco registry file to make it easy to import reg settings.
I also changed my dns settings to the following: (Super Low Latency)
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
If your data connection comes up and asks for username password, leave it blank and checkmark save password...

The fix for IE going so god aweful slow and other internet connect software on the titan running windows mobile 6.1
I'm trying this out right now, although I didn't find a place to stick the DNS settings.
I'll see how it goes, thanks
Edit: Seems faster!
dns settings are under the advance settings of your connection.
it's still lagging at some webpages how ever, i was able to download google maps without it stopping
Edit:
after going to a more than 2 webpages. yes it does seem to move a bit faster it still lags on a few webpages but on others that it was lagging on prior it's now flying
Will it work for the kaiser or Titan only?

I guess this isnt for the cellular internet? I don't see DNS settings under the Sprint network setup I have.
I am on Sprint and made the suggested changes. It still stalls for me when trying to download live search, but web pages do load faster.
A noticeable improvement for me loading pages!!! Thanks
I have changed the registry value to 5 but after a reset it changes back to default 11.

dalvares7 if you read carefully it is stated to do a software soft reset. Not a stylus soft reset. Use psshutxp to reset device after making reg changes.
The only question will be whether this setting will get lost during future soft resets via stylus... I havent tested it out yet but I will.
Anyone else know?

The settings do stick after future soft resets.
Are there any other ill effects to setting this??
actually went down for me
average speed before reg mod: 753
Average speed after reg mod : 654
Average speed after DNS mod : 587
I've only played around for about 30-45 minutes now... no ill effects noticed so far.
The difference in initial loadup, as well as subsequent loadup of pages is very obvious. Major improvement.
Also, I'm still running the 2.0.0 beta DCD ROM, which was mostly WM6.0 (not 6.1) core.
changed the Parm. settings to 5 and not the dns. It's been faster for me. Before the change was around 600k, but after the change it went up to 1300k.
Thanks for the settings, great job..
Holy crap!
It sped it up by almost double what I was getting before.
I have a question though...maybe some of you will know the answer...
When using PIE and running the mobile speed test on dslreports.com, even with this new reg edit, I only get speeds ranging from 500-600 every time.
I used Opera mini and ran the same tests and got between 1100-1600 every time. (Sometimes it would even tell me that it was too fast, EVEN when using the 1mb test)
What's up with that?
WOW , applied the "fix", tethered the phone with WMWifiRouter and i certainly see a big difference.
I attached a Speedtest from Speedtest.net (great site btw For PC's)
Befor i had half of the values being shown in my results. Talk about "Fix"
-If your wondering i'm using DCD's 2.2.6

I am pretty sure Opera uses a proxy server that loads / processes the webpage there then resends it to your mobile device. So the speed you see when you use Opera is their conection to the test site.
those dns servers are Level 3's backbone
Since I apparently don't have enough posts to reply to this thread:

I'll start a new one here.
Once I deleted the proxies I was no longer able to update or download new apps from the market. As soon as I put the original settings back I was immediately able to use the market again. Does anyone else get the same behavior after changing those settings?
My market is working fine.
Nope, my market still works fine. Can't see any increase in speeds though
My market is fine with everything zeroed out.
Sent via Evo 3D...mmmmm dual core.
I was having problems watching youtube so I just restored the old settings. Didn't notice much improvement with it on anyway
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Ya, exact same problem. Can't access market now.
Any idea why? And why for only some of us??
The market and everything else is still working for me. I didn't get too much of a speed increase from it though.
Sounds like it is location-based. Does this mean that with everything zeroed out, you may or may not be able to access the market depending on where you are sitting at the time? If that's the case, I'm going back to defaults!
I just tried it. Got "A network error has occurred". Hit retry about 4 times and it just started working. Seems flaky with the proxy. Either that or it needed 30 seconds or so to obtain an IP address after I disabled WiFi.

same here.
I was able to fix mine by putting 0.0.0.0.0 as the proxy address and 0 for the port number for both proxies.
When I was having trouble with youtube I had all fields blank.
I've gone from ~600kbps to ~1100kbps download speed. Also my ping has improved significantly. Before it was anywhere between 300 and 1000ms, now it's a steady 200ms

Lols
Lols, I did what someone else suggested---when the market failed, I hit "retry" as fast as I could--probably bout 25-25 times. All of a sudden it worked. And now it works every time.
Talk about an easy fix
Works perfect for me
searched, no find.
I have two consistent issues.
1 - When retrieving sites requiring a login, or when logging into LastPass, if I can get to the "Processing..." popup, it will hang and sit. Sometimes it will complete Processing... after a couple minutes, and sometimes it will continue until I kill the app. This issue is frequent, so restarting the app is not an acceptable workaround.
2 - When loading a page it will often do the same but without a popup. It will take forever to load, sometimes not at all. Occasionally I can reload the page and it will work, occasionally it will not load at until I reboot the phone or something.
these issues seem to occur frequently on home wifi. my PC, also on wifi, will load from these servers instantly.
i have had the issue on the following:
stock
Unnamed latest
Shostock latest
entropy dd latest, and last two
siyah latest and previous
with/without overclocking
with/without data enabled
affects all browsers, lastpass, tapatalk, xda premium, etc, etc.
caches cleared, including dalvik
no stress on the phone, running usually 250-500MB RAM only.
any ideas? the phone is basically unusable as a smartphone at home. the issues may or may not be as bad on regular data. TIA.
one more try... anyone help with this issue?
You state that this is mostly happening on your home Wi-Fi connection; is it possible that you have some sort of QoS / traffic shaping setup on your wireless AP / router that may be resulting in this condition? Also, do you have any of this type of behavior on cellular 3G or other Wi-FI connected networks?

thanks for the reply.
the issue is inconsistent even at home. i have been watching for causal conditions but not finding anything yet. it does not appear to be my wifi. no other devices have ever had any kind of problem, and there have been many (i share the my wpa2 wifi with neighbors as well, many smartphones, etc). yes, the issue frequently affects me off wifi on data. and yes, it occurs at my office wifi as well. but the intermittent nature makes me think it's something with the phone's software, which is why i'm focused on figuring this out here. when it rains it pours, and i will have to reboot the phone, not just kill my browser or other app, in order to connect. sometimes rebooting more than once is required.
Have you tried a 'wipe data / factory reset' in ClockworkMod Recovery?
yes, i did actually. the issue is happening even loading basic google searches out on H+. the page will usually load, but will take literally 3+ minutes to load it. i'm not sure what's going on but it seems there's something going on between me and the servers that is hanging my data retrieval. i'm mystified. but the phone is literally stuck on page loads & data retrieval about 70% of the time. i don't have any weird software running in the bg either. pretty basic Entropy DD (tried the last 2) and ShoStock latest. is it possible there is some hidden settings somewhere i can look at? i have scoured all available settings on the phone, but there's gotta be something deeper i can look at. any recommended system tweak apps for this?

ok, mine is a refurb, but has not appeared to have even a single hardware issue. guess i'll continue to cycle new software and see if this eventually irons out. next step is to get more into the system settings and investigate. my initial guess is my phone is sending repeated requests in the background.
if anyone is interested, i may have found the problem. i'm no networking guru, but i changed my phone's DNS settings to OpenDNS's servers like my home router's config. previously my phone was using Google's DNS servers. after changing the phone to OpenDNS loads are consistent and snappy like every other box in the house. keeping an eye, but so far so good.

It wasn't easy for me, but I got CM7 on my Atrix. The goal was first to get around any throttling restrictions I've been experiencing, second to fix some bugs with the stock Moto rom regarding bluetooth and proximity sensor. On to my issue:
On wifi everything is perfect.
On 3G I can only use data on Browser or Opera and a select few other applications. I can't download apps via the market but I can find them. No speed on my speedtest app, but mobilespeedtest.com gives me 1.4Mbps download speed. This is coming from being throttled to about 150Kbps (little b) and I still have a week left on my plan cycle. So the throttle is fixed but different.
I also had the "mobile data limit exceeded" message that I was able to get rid of by changing the data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db as detailed in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253963
Before I changed that I was limited to 300Kbps flat on apps (Speedtest, FCC Speed Test), with Browser getting good speeds again at about 1.5Mbps. The "mobile data limit exceeded" message is gone now. I seem to think this all has something to do with the settings in the db above but I know better than to blindly start changing values.
Also of note, I restored my apps + data with Titanium Backup after I wiped, rooted, unlocked and put in CM7. I thought that some data from before may have affected things now. But I had slow (throttled, but it moved) data many reboots after restoring my apps + data.
I also butchered my APN settings in an attempt to get around the throttle monster to the point I had to restore all the default AT&T APNs to get things working mostly right.
I feel I've made a mess of things layering attempt on attempt to increase speeds. Does this problem make sense?
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.57-MB860-CM7-gf1d2072
CyanogenMod-7.2.0-RC0-Olympus-KANG
Build GWK74
An update:
The default AT&T US APN was previously selected, and previously didn't let most apps get data.
Then I read this post: [redacted, google search "Cannot access Google Market application and Gmail on my new LG Optimus One P500 Mobile"]
This suggested it might be an APN issue. By switching to the AT&T HSDPA APN I get data back but at throttled speeds.
After testing speeds in Speedtest.net app and FCC Speed Test app I got 200-300Kbps as expected, but 600-1000Kbps in browser on mobilespeedtest.com. This was misleading. The mobile speed test was only 100KB. In switching to the 2MB full test the speed went right back to 230Kbps. These results plus looking at the graphs the Speedtest.net app gives you shows the traffic is running very fast at the beginning of the download (reminds me of Comcast's PowerBoost).
Back to square one here.
Hello all,
I have a cable modem, which broadcasts 2.4 and 5 GHz wifi signals. My internet connection speed is 1000 Mbps.
The problem is, that the wifi-based internet acts quite strange. I don't know how to explain it precisely, sorry for the lame description. My experiences so far:
Connecting to the wifi signals with the phone are fast and flawless. Both to the 2.4 and 5 GHZ networks.
The phone is within the 0,5-1 meter range from the source, the signal strength is maximum.
From the user's aspect it seems that the internet speed is wobbling from normal to very slow.
It seems like the host resolving is extremely slow, the downloading speed is fine.
Speedtest app displays ~500 Mbps download speed but sometimes it takes a minute to establish the measuring connection.
In most cases I'm unable to install or update apps from the Play Store. I can browse the store without problems, but the apps are not downloading, instead I'm getting a few minutes long "pending" text, then an error which displays "The app cannot be dowbloaded". In some cases the apps are downloaded.
I've tried the following:
The problem affects both the 2.4 and the 5 GHz networks.
Slowdowns are appearing both in browser and applications.
Another devices on the same networks are working fine. Even my old Samsung S7, an iPhon7 and a Realme Pad.
I have already checked the wifi channel population, there are no relevant interferences.
If I turn off then restart or switching between the wifi networks, it seems working fine for a minute then it starts to lagging again.
Mobile broadband connection is working perfectly.
Any tips and help are much appreciated. Thank you.

RMX3301_11_A.10 is the latest version. It came out yesterday.
I have the latest ROM.
In the meantime I have figured out that the host resolving slowdowns were caused by an adblocking app, EVEN if it was turned off entirely.
Google Play Store downloads still struggling though. Sometimes they're lightning fast, in other cases do not finish.
I'm continuing the investigation.

How did you do the initial installation? Everything from scratch or from a backup of your previous phone?.
If you did the initial install from a backup, I recommend doing a hard reset and installing everything from scratch. The phone will work much better.

Of course it matters, first, surely the backup was from android 11 and in the Realme you have android 12 and they are also different models, different processors. Some applications will create incompatibilities and that will make the phone work erratically.

Thanks for the tip, I will do a hard reset then and see what happens.
Well, I did a hard reset (a clean wipe) and reinstalled everything manually.
Google Play Store (from now on: GPS) still not working properly, but the browsing speed and everything else is fine.
In most cases GPS downloads are in "pending" status, then after one or two minutes, it displays a "can not download" error.
The interesting thing is, if I turn off then immediately on the wifi connection the downloads continue with full speed. This is working for a minute or so, then the connection become unstable again.
Quite annoying, but I can live with that until it affects only GPS downloads. Everything else looks normal (browsing, in-app downloads, notifications, messaging speed etc.)
For the Google Play store issue try this.
1. Go to system settings
2. Go to APPS
3. Go to APP management
4. Go to Google Play Store and open it
5. Tap the 3 dots at the top right
6. Choose uninstall updates
See if this begins to work properly afterwards

Unfortunately, it did not solve the problem.
If you have access to another wifi in another location does the Google Play store issue continue? If it works then you have some type of issue with the wifi at your location.
