Don't believe me? Here's a video demonstrating my gps tracking ability. Took my prime out for a drive. Was able to track at least 10 gps at a time.
What's your serial number start with?
Same here c3

Mine is working but seems to lag a bit. C3 as well.
Edit: From reboot with only GPS checked.
Cool. Thanks for vid. Yes, your Accuracy (feet) was up in 48 feet few times. But, pretty good. Right now with my modded prime I can get variables of 24, 9, and 6 feet.
About same as my Samsung Galaxy S II.
Definately more people with C3's are reporting their GPS actually works. And works ok. I can't wait until 300 and 700's come out. See what happens.
C30kas here came in mail yesterday from gamestop. Wifi range is about the same as my evo3d, gps locks in my house but when driving it lags a bit compared to my evo3d on Google maps ....always shows about 20 feet behind. Idc about gps though so I love this thing

So is the WiFi also fixed or what? Do you have any evidence confirming improved WiFi connection?
Because honestly, the WiFi issue and the cracking screens are the only things holding me back from finally making the purchase. And I would love it if I saw improvements across the board before I make this investment.
Wife has new C3OKAS (today opened) and everything seems to work great.
My month old C1OKAS is at asus right now being fixed.. wifi&gps&bluetooth&cracked screen..
Same here , my C3 works pretty good!
Now what to do with that GPS dongle if GPS works?

Well thats the thing, what's the point of a dongle when the GPS is working fine in a car that is moving at a relatively fast speed?
Won't it drain more battery? Or at the very least cause issues with it being in the way and stuff, on the other hand we do not know what it looks like but one imagines a regular hanging dongle, which would be awkward and in the way perhaps?
Cheers.
PS: 500 happy isnt enough or impressive, when you hit 1 million then we can applaude you.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to get anything. Get an ipad if these things are holding you back.
Regarding wifi, I'm sitting on the opposite side of the house on a different floor from the router and I'm still getting a strong signal. Look at screenshot.
This is a C2 unit. I ain't letting this one go. This is my baby now.
Huh interesting GPS result. Though I'm surprised to say that my GPS is pretty much the same or a bit worse while in the car moving at 60 km/h. I get around 36-72 feet lock most of the time but the wi-fi isn't excellent though. It's just as good as my iPod Touch's but worse than my father's Galaxy S2 by not much (about 5 dbm). And yet my serial is BCOKAS. Mine is definitely a keeper.
Hey!
what navigation software are you using? reason i'm asking is Co-Pilot sees the sats but does not seem to lock well even when GPS test reports 8 or 9 good sat locks.
and what kind of tablet holder do you have in your car? want to get it for my truck. Thanks!
BTW, sending my unit in for camera fix. hope they can do the GPS as well...

I bought this prime fully expecting the gps to not work and the wifi to be weak. Imagine my surprise when I tried to get gps signals and got a dozen signals. And imagine my surprise when I noticed I was also picking up my neighbor's wifi signal.
In my excitement, I decided to brag to you people so that those without a working gps and weak wifi will be jealous of my acquisition.

Just talking about pressure points on Asus prime and possible that the
pogo pins used weren't making contact on some. interesting...
And I knows its been talked about on few threads.
If you know it's being talked about in another thread then why would you create a new one ?
Well well well....lmfao the cat is out the hat now....some people are so damn simple minded and can't see that this was a real possibility...now the proof is pointing more towards this being the reason for wifi/GPS issues than the backplate. Note how she said after that press all wireless signals greatly increased..that her wifi was easily on par with all her other wireless devices. Now her GPS is picking up satellites like crazy.
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS OP! Further proof now.

Ha, whatever.
That is probably what was wrong with my first transformer prime unit that I returned to Office Depot. It had great working wifi for about a week and then it suddenly started having the wifi problems that have been reported by others. I suspect that the antenna connection had come loose. My replacement prime has been doing great with wifi so far just like my first one did in the beginning. I've had it for about two weeks now.

Do you ever consider a source before going on a tear? "Lisa" is PDXGal from this forum. She's just parotting back what she learned here. I don't know her qualifications but I've seen some of her other reviews and she's not a h/w engineer. In other words, her video affirms what's been discussed and is hardly "breaking news" or technical verification from someone more qualified than we are.
I take it that this is not considered a permanent fix....
unfortunately, this hasn't improved my wifi connection at all. i've been squeezing my prime all day and still, my sgs2 blows the prime out of the water in every location that i've tested. same goes for our 2 year old samsung laptop.

I wouldn't even consider it a "fix" as much as confirmation of a problem. A fix would involve Asus admitting there's a design issue affecting at least some devices and coming up with a solution that addresses it. So far there's been no word from Asus (PM's via forum members don't count) acknowledging there's even a problem.
Holy ****..that actually work. I never ever have a gps signal before and after i did that push .. i actually got 7 satellite lock...
How bout we use C clamps as a permanent fix. lol. Man this is one tablet I love and hate.

I wonder if she got the anandtech info from here about the pogo connectors and the bending technique and came up with her own technique.

I know who she is..lol plus we already had a h/w engineer come in other thread and said this might likely be the reason also.
The video is just another form of proof another member tried a so called fix n seemed to improve wifi n GPS reception. There's been slot of people lately who tried this and seemed to work. There's no definitive proof on anything. Even the backplate. Asus didn't flat out admit Backplate was the "SOLE" cause of wireless issue. They said its a possibility. Now this is a new possibility also which reared its head. Which is seeming looking more n more convincing and makes logical sense. Its not that hard to envision actually. If some units actually have loose or faulty connections then it can't get any worse for wireless performance then that. METal backplate won't mean anything if the dang signals can't even be generated or very poor from poor contact of the pogo pin. Signal is generated first, then it has to deal with going thru metal backplate. Therefore, Pogo pins possibly being faulty on some or alot of devices is alot more important/crucial to affecting wireless performance vs. Just a backplate alone. This is not difficult to comprehend.
ONE thing though, if this pin thing holds out to be true, No Software fix will overcome that or make it better. IF its only the backplate, then further updates can still be released to further improve GPS "AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE"
I don't get why she didn't post a video of her applying this method. Anyone else have video showing it works?

Thanks for the link to the video. Unfortunately in watching the video I seemed to be experiencing deja vu as this information was already presented to us in an earlier post.
It would have been nice to see the improvements in wifi and GPS reception in the video other than anecdotal evidence presented.
Got 12 satellites outside. How many fixed satellites? SNR strength?
Wifi analyzer -> dbm strength before? after?
So ...
bad aluminum back plate
bad antenna connectors (pogo pins)
bad drivers (GPS, wifi/BT)
GPS / wifi / wifi-BT -> still broken not fixed.
there was not a before and after shot of wifi reception using wifi meter or even "during" testing and no mention of signal levels before or after, which I found a bit odd and seemed to rely upon a speedtest. AFAIR she also talked about a number of routers (which I took to read as in her block of flats)
I tried this on my prime which and found that it did not improve signal levels which were on the 60db level and when I pressed on said areas the signal actually fell before returning to the previous level, but I have been playing a bit of pinball recently and the best method I have found for that game would involve a bit of squeezing in said areas anyway...so not a very good test in my circumstances..
I am due to receive a new gold prime on Monday which will be from a later build (I Think) and it will be interesting to compare primes.
But I do agree that the connectors do look as if they can contribute to weak signals and also have the potential to deteriorate over time, and it would involve just a tad too much effort to run a bit of wire wool or suchlike to clean up the connection.
wow i don't know if this really helped or not because i never really test my gps before, but i'm getting 14 satellites!! outside my house within a min.
This isn't really a clear cut result...
I am at the edge of my wireless reception at my house and my download speeds varied from 6MB to 16MB sitting in the same spot running the test over and over. Ping of about 38.
Wifi analyzer actually has me getting a stronger signal than my phone, but my phone gets more stable results from 12MB to 16 MB. Ping of about 50.
This certainly isn't a result of a loose connection, because the wifi analyzer has my tablet getting a stronger connection than my phone, yet the speed is a lot more varied.
Going to try my first post here... I have both the 101 and the 201. Been concentrating on the GPS problem - last night took both out on the deck and ran GPS test. 9 of 9 lock on the 101, and 9 of 13 on the 201, but at about 3/4 the signal strength. Still 9 of 9 on the 101 when i brought them inside, and 0 on the 201, although a few flashed. Thought it might be the case, but read a whack post somewhere about putting a cell in an aluminum pot and uncovering it quickly after some time to see if it lost signal. For kicks I did this with a heavy aluminum calphalon pot with my trusty thunderbolt (thick aluminum case) and after 15 mins it still hadn't lost even one satellite! The 201 sitting next to the rig never did more than flash one or two. At this point I really think the case is not the issue. Did the squeezy thing tonight, put the 201 and the 101 on the coffee table, and the 101 got its lock on 9 of 9, and the 201 got 8 of 8! At 2/3 the signal this time, but better than 0 the night before.
Conclusions, anyone? Hope this post is OK - scared to death with all the rules here...
I really don't know where the 1% figure comes from. Just received my Prime, Amazon, C1 serial. I am on my 4th attempt to get a good one. Same thing. Bad bleeing (even worse than previous ones), weak WiFi (4mps should be at least 15mps), WiFi drops with BT (drops from 4mps to 200kps).
I'm going to have to return this one to the store and order a new one again. 5th attempt. This is getting old.
If the stock is low maybe they resend devices that other returned? (is it posibble?)

Rumor is, they're removing BT, WIFI, and a screen from the marketing specs, so you're really expecting too much for them to be working.

Whenever I get a tablet that works. Mathematically, since there is only "1% of defective units", my changes are looking better and better
I got my new prime today. Now its also a C1 and surprisingly everythings works fine. Even GPS works! The only problem now is that I got two freezes and reboots today, but this may be related to the restore from Titanium to the new unit.
No 6 and counting. This one has infamous WiFi speed drop. Maybe no 7 will be good :-D

I recently acquired a tf201 and dock combo here in Sweden, at first I was worried that my device might suffer from problems. Such is not the case.
(1) My wifi works perfectly fine everywhere I go.
(2) My Bluetooth audio works perfectly every time I use it.
(3) Wifi works fine whilst BT is active and in use.
(4) My GPS works fine and will even pickup satellites from inside my living room and I am in an apartment on the second floor with another floor above me.
My only gripe is the minor light bleed on the right side (landscape mode), but it is still acceptable as I do not notice it when watching videos etc. Also the clicking of the lens being recorded when I take videos in AF mode and it is very quite.
My friends who also got them here right after me, all have no problems either.
Perhaps we have a newer batch? Our unit serial numbers start with a C.
Are the Swedish ones just built better?
Anyways, just wanted to share my opinion and that I am truly happy with my device, It does everything I need including reading of camera raw files off SD cards which is an asset in my job. Posting right now using it
No. I think most like mine work fine. People are more willing to complain than praise.

sweet mother of mercy these threads will never end!!!!
I have weak WiFi on my prime, 20 feet away i'm at 2 bars. And for GPS, if i put a piece of a coat hanger at the top right of my prime it picks up plenty of sats.
Don't care much for GPS, but i paid for it. I'm hoping we have some sort of trade in program or fix. If not ill RMA down the road hoping for a better device with good Wi-Fi.
Besides that, I'm in LOVE with my prime...
I had problems in the beginning (I think it was the hc to ics upgrade). After I did a factory reset with the ics update everything works perfectly. I've had no system crashes so far, browsers with flash work perfectly and only 1-2 app-crashes which I could reproduce on my mobile aswell.
Wifi is bad at my home anyway... so I'm used to it. But didn't notice more problems than on other devices.
But that factory reset did wonders..
I was also fortunate to get a solid unit, what a wonderful device this is...
You are not alone. Wifi is not powerful, but good enough for my needs. I tried BT and GPS at the same moment and never experiences any issue.
Maybe EU units are fine ...

I thought everyone had problems with GPS... I guess I was mistaken.
For testing that, did you use the GPS Test app available on the market, or did you just try out something like Google Maps? I ask, because if you just use Google Maps, it's able to use other location sources, so it would make it look as if GPS "works".

I used NavTech. WIFI off and On
I too have had no issues with my prime, not even any light bleed.
Just bought a Prime from Local BB here in Yakima, WA. Four just arrived today in stock. 32GB grey. After a failed pre order prime BX serial. (see my open prime thread in sig) This was a C2. No Light bleed. WIFI works excellent. Only thing that didnt work was GPS. However, I was expecting this. (Not using this for traveling only bedtime / couch surf)
WIFI range on this thing matched with my kids iPad 2! I was able to get WIFI in areas where my BX never did. Plus i am actually pulling my full bandwidth. 30mbs / 5mbs. I tested every area of my house right along side my kids iPad 2. Same results! I am totally amazed and very happy!!
Modded prime with working GPS will be mounted permenant in my vehicle.
New C2 from BB with its sleekness will be my bedtime / couch toy!
good news to hear then. Congrats.

There havent been any significant differences between the serial numbers. So you're good
There have been cases with other devices where they actually improved as new batches came out, but the primes have been consistantly good from the beginning. Even though this forum suggests otherwise. But you will only see the people with problems making posts so its really misleading.

yes he is serious but lets not get into that never ending debate. before we have to pull the poll up showing over 80% of prime owners are happy with their device. over 400 prime owners in xda voted that way. And Asus and CNet interview statement showing less than 1% of primes are defective/have been returned.
I do admit, there are some units with issues though Smile.
its a tired debate. for the most part, majority is past that and most primes seem to be performing fine one way or another.

sorry forgot to add "according to ASUS RMA numbers" And thats about the only thing we can rely on if we are talking facts. But yeah lets burry this discussion.
as i said you will only see the people complaining in these forums... Go to an [insert random manufacturer] forum and you will find people complaining big time. If you hang around here all day and read every whine post you will get the feeling that every 2nd prime is broken There are units with issues as there always are when a new product gets released. That and people are just crazy sometimes. Look at ipad3 it got a little hot after playing some intense game for 3 hours and people start running back to the shop with it...
They should have touched my old old overclocked Celeron which was running at 90° C all his life.

I am happy to hear your newest Prime is working so well. Did you get an identical one or did you change the color? I'm guessing 32g with the 540 price tag. I was keeping up with your GPS mod thread and I'm guessing you must be very excited to have a brand spanking new Prime that you can start something else on. Just kidding. I finally have my 6 week RMA adventure coming to an end and Asus is sending me a C30 unit delivering Friday by FedEx. Their doing an advance RMA for me and I am grateful for that. I'll do a thorough test on the weekend and let you all know
Just got a new C30 from Amazon today. I will be waiting on my refund from my BCO that sat in RMA for over a month before Asus offered me a refund.
I didn't have problems with wifi on the last one but this one is certainly at the same speeds as my laptop (very close to the router). GPS was non existent until I tried a GPS fix (Transformer Prime Test Build 2 - Google Specific No-SSL v3.1), GPS is still a work in progress, but I have hope (even if I have to mod it externally).
Very happy with this prime. The feedback you can't hardly feel but at least it doesn't rattle like my last one.
I have a c30 just received today so far so great ,I'm confused what exactly is the gps issue I want try it tomorrow so k.want to know to compare since today I just locked gps up and tried a navigation and seems to work great thanks

Get and Try app in market "GPS test" You can see how many birds are in view. I want to correct myself in original post. I said GPS didn't work as expected. It does work on this C2 tablet. However not very well. I get some birds in view. When I pull up google maps. It puts me like two or three houses down from where I actually live (indoors). Of course my phone is accurate within like 12feet (indoors). I haven't tried outdoors with this c2 yet.
Let us know about the C3.
OK I downloaded but don't know how use it if you have me more instruction I'm happy to help and let y'all know how works in my C30
Is there any way to take screen shot on an unrooted transformer prime
Nor sure is what you looking for but, in views it was 10-14 in use 8-12

You can take a screen shot by holding volume down & power at the same time. If you had a GPS problem yours would say 0 like mine.. and not change even outside clear view of the sky. I just use bluetooth2GPS between my Nexus though if I need it on the Prime so its no biggie to me personally but it sounds like yours is fine

Thanks! If I can marry this prime right now I would. (However, I don't think WA allows you to marry an electronic device. )
I was a little apprehensive on laying down another $540 for a tablet. But everything worked out fine. Going to buy the black tie protection as well. I should be all set.

may want to try square trade? I dont know much about square trade but I know enough about the geeksquad (used to work there) not to get black tie, it might also be cheaper.

FOr xformer Prime, do I really need the GPS dongle or would the GPS work w/o it?
Are you going to be using GPS alot with your Prime? If yes, then hell yah you need it!

I don't and won't need it, but signed up today to get it. I may want to sell my Prime in the future and having it might make that easier.
Put it like this:
What's the point of not having it if it's free? Ever thrown something away that you turn out to want/need maybe not even a week later? Kind of like that to me

If you want to be able to rely on your Prime for navigation assistance then yes you need the GPS dongle. GPS will not work reliably without it, if it did they wouldn't need to manufacture and freely distribute a dongle now would they?
Also.. its free. So even if you never use it, it is worth signing up for and getting just in case you do need or or you want to sell your tablet sometime in the future.

Where have you been? The internal GPS has never worked on anyone's Prime since they started shipping in December. Asus even removed it from their advertising.

For the record, I decided to test the GPS on my Prime today while the weather was warm. This after I checked my serial number of the device: C1 by the way...
Walked outside and stood 10 feet away from my front door. Less than 10 seconds and a lock. I walked around a bit and walked back into the house and it was still locked.

That's because you are / were connected to your home router which gives the prime your location based on IP. A better test would be to disconnect WIFI, disable location services and reboot, then test. You probably wont get the same results
Of course you need it ! Having it will add couple more bucks to the price when you're selling it

You're right! Now answer me this: why would I ever turn that off in the real world?
Google has mapped millions of Wifi SSIDs to assist with this very same thing. Half of all telephony GPS devices would have the same difficulty without it (especially since Google leases this information to Microsoft and Apple), my MyTouch 4G Slide included. Why would I not keep location services on?

I will happily sign up for that dongle, but not without i see my screen light-bleed free. Made up my mind to be without it for a few weeks, maybe a month. If it takes longer than that, i'll ask for another one at the store.

Why would you need gps if you had wifi? To check where in the house you are? Or which section of McDonald's you're in? If a device needs wifi for the "gps" to work then they might as well not call it a gps cause my Desktop can triangulate my position with wifi.

Who cares?
If the problem is solved because Wifi assists the GPS in finding a lock, then who cares? GPS in small devices isn't always going to work. I learned that 10 years ago when they sold only GPS USB dongles and it took forever to get a good lock. Turning Wifi on takes care of the issue.
Look, I get it. We all want our devices to work perfectly. My desktop doesn't handle two video cards easily. My video card doesn't handle TV relay (like Slingbox) well. My phone doesn't have a dedicated number row on the slide out keyboard. My A500 was a bit bulky. My Sony BluRay speaker system sometimes has a delay. My Insignia LED TV doesn't handle Xbox great. My Astro A40s bleed through batteries.
Welcome to technology. If you don't work in IT, let me give you a heads up: nothing ever works 100%, 100% of the time.
Just consider yourself lucky it's the GPS with your tablet, something so absurd to make use of on a tablet anyway.
And if you're still bothered by the whole "Asus sold us a load of crap" concern, well, this is life. This won't be the last time that happens. And honestly, I agree with that other poster; if it didn't have GPS in the description or on the package, would you have refused to buy it? Google's ingenious SSID mapping has made geolocation so much faster and efficient (unless you live in the backwoods).
I'm sorry, I don't aim to be mean or anything, but this is ridiculous. It's semantics. If it works, it works. Is the world going to end because you have to turn on Wifi to lock quicker?

Anyone else having problems with ASUS' quality website where it doesn't recognize your serial number?
I swear, ASUS sucks at customer service and I think the PRIME is my last ASUS product ever. Unfortunate.
im just asking bc I have a Sgt10.1 and looking to upgrade. I wouldn't like to buy a defective product. I can't decide to get prime or ipad3.

It turns out, if you're a normal human being and don't mind running Wifi alongside your GPS (like most people run their phones), you'll be absolutely perfect. Only if you're a stickler for no reason will you have a problem.
I am learning over the past 24 hours that people are making a big deal over GPS because they are too stubborn to make the modern-era change of running Wifi alongside GPS. If you have no problem doing that (like a normal person), then you'll be perfectly fine.

Buy and ipad3. Stay away from the TF201. It sucks in many ways, the only good thing it has going for it is the quad core and the screen. Wi-fi - SUCKS, GPS - SUCKS.
I don't mind that GPS sucks (actually never ever got a lock on once), but when Wi-Fi sucks when you are 10 feet from the router. That's a huge problem. I cannot even sit on my sofa and use the TF201. My Xooms, no problem. I can even go 70ft away with the Xoom and no problem. TF201, about 4 1/2 feet then it takes a DUMP.
For the price the ipad3 will give you a much better user experience. TF201 as far as I am concerned is a defect. LEMON.
ASUS won't even let me click to get the free dongle.

I totally agree! I personally don't see what the big deal is. I get a location lock when using Google Maps, as an example. I don't see why anyone needs to have a constant gps lock all of the time. I'm not getting it. I have my Rezound and Tom Tom if I need door to door direction.

That is stupid. Do you work for ASUS? If the tablet didn't have a camera would I still have bought it? Yes. But if I bought it and they told me "lol the camera is actually fake, we didn't think you would use it." then would I give them hell for it? Yes. As far as I know, people use gps on their phones for turn by turn without internet and it works fine. So I am not sure what you mean by gps won't always work in small devices. As far as I am concerned the TFP is bigger than many GPS devices on the market.
BTW, there is a difference between needing wifi to get a faster lock (aka AGPS) versus using wifi to triangulate one's position (aka the internet). I don't get what your deal is that just because you don't use the gps on the tablet then you think that it is absurd. If no one uses it then why did they put gps on the tablet in the first place? Why does Apple put gps on their 3G iPads if no one uses them?

That is tragic. Looks like the modern era is actually degrading. I guess eventually we will have to connect our phones to a cable to make a phone call and then start writing each other letters. Looks like we rather burn the battery and data on our phone unlike the abnormal people who have phones with gps that actually receives signals from satellites rather than using wifi to triangulate the position.
