I updated my firmware, so this caused the only rooting guide on mac being non functioning for me. so, is there any solution. I tried using cross0ver to make Hasoon's root kit work, but it doesn't. Any solutions?
Thanks guys,

I just got my thunderbolt one week ago... when booted, it got the newest OTA that just came out last weekend. I was able to successfully root using the sticky thread at the top of this forum. Just follow the instructions verbatim and check ur checksums.
It took literally less than 20 minutes... ok, maybe 30 with a few minutes of pre-reading, and some staging of stuff.
Seriously. Just follow that sticky's instructions to a "T".
Previous known, stickied methods should still work fine for the most recent OTA...just not the next OTA since it'll be GB.

Lol, a simple misplacement of a topic is in no way a need to deny any help aside from a crude remark. At least have some courtesy.
But that is getting off topic. Yes, just use the root thread and use one click or do it yourself.

Cannot root with the old methods. I think the new kernel cannot be rooted. Any devs able to respond to this?

They have been reported to work fine as it has been performed by several people post-OTA.
Check this user's post and the follow up if need be: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15596056#post15596056
Are you getting the same "operation not permitted" error as this user?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15593614#post15593614
ya.. i get no permissions error.
I had previously installed the newest unrooted OTA last week. I was a bit worried about rooting with the posted method, but last night I took the jump and did it. Worked flawless for me. I rooted installed the downgrade, backed up with rom manager, then installed the rooted 1.70.605.0 OTA and it has been working great for me. I was completely new to the rooting process and I followed both the youtube video from nat3mil and the version 2.5 from android police.
I just finished successfully rooting my phone with the instructions posted here on XDA. I had downloaded the lasted OTA update. No problems, now on my way to nightlies of some sort I'm sure!

You got one of only 2 options right now.
1. Find a PC somewhere and use that.
2. Install Windows via Bootcamp on the Mac.
Running any of these s-off tools is sketchy via a Virtual Machine like Parallels or Fusion. Those installs don't access the hardware right.
Better option - ubuntu live cd or install

Ok, well i am relevantly new to this rooting method for the android devices; so after reading through threads on rooting i have read sections on unlocking bootloader, roms, kernels and stuff and my question is. Will i be able to root my phone without unlocking it just so i can access applications that need root to run? i have no plans in adding or using custom roms on my phone and was wondering will i still be able to update my phone though the official updates? cause i have read from some threads and posts that you will not be able to update it and was wondering is it mandatory for me to unlock the bootloader while rooting....... thanks in advance for the answer and help
No. Root can be obtained only after unlockong.

hmm ok so i will need to bootload before rooting ha..... fine so how do i do the updates through roms.... if so where can i find them and are there any threads that shows how to use them.
I would recommend you not worry about how to flash ROMs quite yet. Once you obtain root, which isn't really hard, flashing ROMs will seem easy as pie. And to flash ROMs you need to flash a kernel, which is easily done with the rooting tool posted in the development section. Good luck.
dude could you tell like tell me how to root this device, cause i have been trying to root it for a while now and cant seem to do it..... i am following this thread to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39744013#post39744013....... and i cant pass through the "adb device" section as my device is not being detected and yes all my drives are upto date... so would be greatly appreciated if i could get some help.

At which step are you stuck? I will be glad to help you, you should have posted right in the thread.
I haven't gone through the mentioned guide above, and it might be all good, but I've followed this one instead when I first got my HOX+ (now I can do it blindfolded) and it was easy to follow and worked like a charm. Give it a shot.
Just an FYI (so you don't call us liars in the future when you switch devices), but not all root hacks require the bootloader to be unlocked, it depends on the device.
First of I want to thank everyone that shares their knowledge on here.
I originally came here to root my phone so I could use ARlib. I had trouble getting that to work and tried ARU and it's working great.
Now that I have it working I'd like to protect what I have. I've been reading the forums, but even in one thread people sometimes contradict each other, so it's been hard sometimes to follow it.
I'm on 4.3 with a VRUEMK2 build. I flashed using your saferoot guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
My questions are:
What is the best/safest tool to make a backup?
How do I stop 4.4 OTA?
Is it ok to use Kies to sync or is there something better for Outlook?
I see a lot of recommendations for ES file explorer, should I get the plain one or the manager version?
Also since I can't ask in that forum and don't see it answered there, what is the advantage of the GPS injector for ARU vs. just using the phones GPS?
Thanks

Well to make a backup ( nandroid ) you can install SafeStrap and make one in there.
To stop OTA
Install Titanium Backup and freeze " SDM " and "FWUpdater " I believe SDM is good enough though.
As far as ARU I have no idea

Has anyone successfully rooted this phone yet? I found root instructions by googling, but they were posted before the release of the phone so I don't trust them. For example:

I temp rooted mine with dirty cow, however it gained me very little. There are three main obstacles: 1) SELinux prevents most things from working, because each program runs within a tight security context, 2) using dirty cow causes the kernel to not save changes to the partition (it doesn't want to write a corrupted partition to disk), in other words a r/w /system is useless, even when you can finally write to it, 3) using dirty cow on the most attractive programs (from a permissions perspective) causes "little" problems like the screen going off.
I've been monitoring another XDA thread (sorry, link is at home) where they are working through these issues on another device. There are various approaches and workarounds, but they currently all involve way more risk than I can justify for a $500 phone.
AIUI, once you've got root, you need to be able to put selinux into permissive mode, but surely getting temp root is a start?
Can you not install systemless root?
If I got the dates right, the phone kernel should be affected by this bug. A proof of concept seemed to be promised by the reporter in the next few days. http://seclists.org/oss-sec/2016/q4/607
Will be interesting to see how it compares to dirty cow as far as access.
Tried KingoRoot - no luck

Well, I tried KingoRoot by running the apk and it failed with an error at 90%. They say there is a version that can be run from Windows, but it appears to be no longer available. I emailed support. I will post again if I make any progress.

DO NOT TRY "Rootkhp". IT CONTAINS VIRUSES AND OPENS UP A BUNCH OF WINDOWS, INCLUDING A FAKE ANTIVIRUS.
Thanks Windows Defender for NOT defending me!

Please note that the phone is 64-bit. This is source code that requires compilation and additional code to do anything useful. Prerequisites include the NDK and related build tools installed via Android Studio. I run Linux so it was relatively painless, but I imagine it might be more of a challenge under Windows.

thanks, I tried that out of curiosity on my phone and it worked (Lollipop, stock Sony Xperia Z Ultra ROM).
--edit-- It appears to give me a root shell, but it doesn't execute anything if I hit return, just hangs. but still, it proves my kernel is vulnerable ;-(

I've uploaded the dirtycow exploit which I built using the Android Studio NDK to

there's two builds, one for for 32 and the other for 64 bit android
unpack and run on a linux box connected to the phone over ADB

Hi. I know this thread is about the Lenovo Phab2 Pro and I have the Lenovo Phab2 but maybe someone can help me. I tried what was suggested on this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/phab-2/how-to/how-to-root-phab-2-pb2-650y-t3524305 But it seems I screwed up and now the phone gets stuck in the Lenovo sign. I'd really appreciate some help since I just bought this phone 2 days ago and now I can't use it. I can access TWRP but it seems there's nothing in /system. I think maybe that's the problem. I'm no expert but since I had rooted and downgraded and upgraded firmware several times on my previous phone, a LG G3. I thought maybe I could do this. I shouldn't have If someone can help me I'd really appreciate. Thanks in advance.
I was able to fix this. Sorry to have bothered.
Hi,
I've been able to get proper root access on this phone. One new problem I am facing is that the tango camera and sensors doesn't seem to work. Normal camera works just fine.
Is this related to the rooting or can it be anything else entirely?
Edit: Never mind. I was able to fix it without having to remove the root. Apparently 'Tango Core' didn't have permissions to access camera. I am not sure how that got reset. So I gave access to it and now it works just fine.
