Is there a way to replace the app with one from an earlier build that has the sms splitting option in the settings? I'd try it myself but I have an otherwise perfect build running, and don't want to bork things up.
And yes, I know I could use any of the ones in the play store, but I find them all ugly and over the top, the default one works for me.
you could always just nandroid then replace whatever you want. if you bork something, just restore.
And as for market apps i use gosms. i like it a lot. there are lots of themes for it in the play store. Surely there is a theme that you dont find ugly.
Alright, I'll give that a try, thanks!

Forgive me, I know this has been discussed by search turned up a lot of fruitless stuff to wade through.
Real simple: Is there a way to backup my phone 100% before trying a new ROM?
I'm not so much worried about contacts, etc... as I sync with Exchange at work. More about saving all customizations, apps, etc.... when I want to try a new ROM release. (I know I"ll have to re-setup all that on the new release... just want to be protected if I decide to go back to the previous ROM).
Thanks!!!
That's what a nand backup does
Backup - nand
Ahhhh..... always wondered about that, but my quick google-search came up empty.
So I don't need something like the app "ROM Manager", though it sounds like it'll make life easier.

Nope NAND is all you need.
One tip thought after to do a NAND backup and after to get a file manager installed rename the the backup to something you'll recognize. The way it work though the original name is a time stamp yyyyddmm-tttt. If that makes any sense. Just remember there can't be any spaces in the new name.

They do take up a lot of space. I move em to my harddrive on my pc and keep the one I use most on the SD.

All I do is nand the ROMs that work well and like. For example my goto everything works rom is Evil Eris 3.0. And and of course a keep ROMs that I know work backed up just in case. Also before changing ROMs do a wipe then restore. I find that sometimes there's a few apps that get left when switching.
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
That's too funny lol, Eris lightning is my goto Rom I keep on the phone also good Rom huh?

I'd like to run Eris lightening but because of all the red theming i have issues. I'm working with conap to change all the pngs to offer different theming. My issue is I'm red/ green color blind. Lol

If you rename your nandroid don't put any spaces. Just numbers/letters. And don't use rom manager.
Can nand restore apps back to the sd card? I am running the kaos rom...
I kinda have the same question... is there an easy way to backup all my apps (even the droid store ones) than restore them when installing a new rom?
btw what's the best app manager? I'm using linda atm

No spaces in the name huh?? That's probably why the half dozen nandroids I made and renamed didn't work...learn something new every day.

Download Titanium from the market. It allows you to backup all of your apps, data within those apps, and system data (settings, etc.). You can run a batch to backup everything and even schedule it to do backups at certain dates and times.
When you flash the new rom, go back to the market and install Titanium again. Do a batch restore and it'll install your apps and all like you had it.
Also if you use ADW or Launcher Pro you can back up your home screens and restore them so they'll be set up just like before. Note - you'll have to manually add widgets back.

I did come across titanium backup while doing searches and it's good to have some reassurance. oh and should I do a COMPLETE batch in the settings part or mostly do the ones in green?
This queston must have been asked 1,000,000 times but there's no simple way of updating roms from v29 to v30 to ect.?
I do complete batches.

I've been using titanium backup when I flash a new rom. I usually do a full data wipe then, once the new rom is installed, i restore all of my apps and data.
The problem I'm having with titanium backup is that I have to individually install each app which is extremely time consuming.
Does anyone know of a more efficient method of backing up my apps?
BTW, I know you can make a .zip file using titanium but I wasn't able to flash it.

I just spent a couple bucks for the Pro key, which allows for batch restoring/backups. Completely worth it when you're wiping and flashing on a daily basis.
I agree. I bought the Pro key. I think buying it through the Amazon App store will bypass any currency conversion issues, possibly. (It seems like when I bought Titanium Backup Pro, I got charged an extra dollar because of the currency conversion....I don't think I had that problem with another app in a non-local currency via Amazon.)
I am seconding what he said. The Pro key is well worth the couple of bucks or whatever it costs. You just hit the restore and let it do it's thing. No prompts.
At $5.99, this will be one of the most expensive apps I have purchased but I'll give it a try if you guys say it's worth it.

It was the second app (of two) I ever purchased (the other being The Sims for $1), and it was totally worth it. Titanium Backup is simply a great program. The batch functionality alone is worth the price- Dropbox integration is a very nice perk (along with a few other Pro features).
I astro for back ups
I bought the Pro version of Titanium Backup after my first slow and tedious backup without the batch function. Plus the automatic backups are great.
i use my backup pro
Gonna have to invest in this as well. Thanks.
Alrighty. Just purchased and backing up as I type. I'll let you guys know.
Why doesn't google market keep track of the free apps we download?
That way when we first sync with google again it would at least get all our apps installed again.

That would be cool but it would still give a prompt for every single app which takes forever and is super annoying. I bought the Pro key and installed the new Nameless rom but now I have to reroot. I'll let you guys know how it worked out
Pro key for titanium. Best app purchase ever, hands down
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Pro key was my first purchase from the market. I don't regret it in the slightest. I always do a batch backup before flashing a rom and then batch restore after. I consider it essential if you are rooted.

It does, actually, in stock Froyo and above, but for some reason the ROMs we have on the Fascinate right now don't.
Normally, when you activate your Google account on a newly flashed phone, all your apps, paid and free, will automatically download as part of your first sync. It doesn't prompt you and it's totally automatic.
I do prefer using TB, though, as Google doesn't backup app data and it can take a really long time to download every app if you have a lot of them. Also, Google's sync occasionally misses apps or downloads ones that you had uninstalled.

I wonder if I have always done something wrong then, I may be new to the fascinate rom scene but I flashed multiple roms on my og droid and they never seemed to give me more than the paid apps
in the market.
admittedly these were aosp roms not stock verizon roms maybe that had something to do with it?
I have the paid version off TB as well but when flashing from say a TW rom to an AOSP rom I prefer to download the apps from the market everything seems to run smother when I do it this way.

Agreed...titanium b/u is worth every penny...on a side note, for me going into settings-> applications-> manage applications-> running applications and going to market (or in my case since I'm on ukb...its tsm market) and hitting clear data...then when I go to the market and hit my apps it will show all of my apps both free and purchased, assuming I don't have any of them frozen because frozen apps won't get recognized by the market...it doesn't start downloading on its own but at least I have a list of complete app download history should I need an update.

never bought the key for titanium, use the free version i like it because of the prompts. Sometimes i have apps that i dont use so i dont install.
I would like to use CM7 however when I try to download Hulu Plus from the market it's not available. It is available in the stock and UnNamed roms. I haven't tried any other device specific apps, I assume the same goes for them. Is there something I can change in the build.prop to get this to work? I would like to get regular updates for the apps as well. So I'm not looking to just use an apk off of the internet.

If you ha e a nandroid backup of your stock rom and IF you didn't use titanium backup to save all your apps and data THEN go back to your nandroid backup and restore to unamed rom, make sure you have backed up the hulu+ app with titanium. Then go back to your nandroid of CM7, open tibu, restore the hulu+ app. I don't use it but I saw someone else post that when they restored their app from tibu it worked fine. Once it is installed you SHOULD still get/have available any updates as normal.
Disregard this IF you already backed it up with tibu and just restore it.
On another note yes you can change your build prop so you can get unseen apps. I am not sure what changes you would need to make though. I used to do that on CM7 with my captivate when Netflix wouldn't show up with CM7. But that was corrected a long time ago.

Don't think you will get updates sideloading like that.
Did you try using airplane mode trick? Wipe cache, enable airplane, enable wifi check. Don't know if that will help or not but its worth a shot

I am pretty sure it will work for you. Like I said I was using the hacked Netflix app well before it was available on our captivates a d when it got updates I was able to see it and download it. Then it wouldn't work saying it wasn't supported in my device. Then I would change my build prop again and it worked fine. I have also had apps that I have sideloaded from xda and once they were available on the market or bad updates I would get the updates and use the apps with no issues. I would bet you will be fine once you have it working.

I know how to change the defaults that is not my issue.
I came from the first Galaxy S running crayogen ICS and the messaging app on that is way better than the Samsung one, it just sucks.
I tired installing the apk from the crayogen rom but I keep getting an error.
When I try I get the this is a system app are you sure you want to continue and replace it. I then select install and just get a error Application not installed.
So I used root explorer, found the default samsung app, renamed it, copied over the other app with the same name and installed it from within the system folder and it worked, so it is now working but it doesn't look the same as it did on my old phone.
Any help?
This is the XT9 message app with dark background thy this install just like you did b4
couldn't get that one to work for some reason, did the same thing and kept getting unable to install error
Try Go SMS Pro?
I use GO SMS Pro also and its awesome! You are correct...The stock messaging app is god awful!
I use Handcent and it's way better than stock.
Instead of renaming the secmms.apk, make a copy and pt it on your sdcard. Delete it from your system/app folder, push the new apk to system/apk.
Reboot. It should bout to the Android is updating screen if it worked.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Thanks for that, but it still didn't work it defaults to the app but it still isn't working correctly and doesn't look like the old app I use to have and when I open settings it always crashes.
What I have done is disabled the default messaging app in settings, installed GoSms and using that as the default. Its not bad and better to adapt to but still miss the CyanogenMod messaging app I had on the I9000
Thanks for the replys

Hey guys, I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to pull the stock google search apk from the X2 for me.
(No updates - after SBF, before market updates)
Thanks in advance!

For Gingerbread? I'm on ICS so I dont know if that one would be the same. But can't you take a Gingerbread ROM and extract the files and take the google search apk from that?
Yeah, GB version. I could. Just don't have my X2 anymore so I deleted my files for it. All the ROMs and everything.
I'm at work though and can't use a computer yet
Sent from my SCH-I405 using xda app-developers app
Would the Eclipse one work? I can download it and extract the apk for you.
How about the "quicksearchbox" from CM7?
Here is the one from Liberty. May be more stockish.
Thanks, but those didn't work. I want it because the updated google search app does not change when the ICS go launcher theme is applied. Instead of the clear bar it displays the all white box which totally messes my phones look up. I ran into the same issue on the x2 but fixed it under settings, apps, manage apps, google search, uninstall updates. This phone is newer so its stock app is already updated. I think I need the stock x2 app from a sbf or something.
I emailed the dev about it when I had my x2 but no change yet
