Opinions on Juice Defender (free) - Brilliant or quacksalver? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I want to know about your experiences with Juice Defender (free version), especially on ICS phones.
Is it really useful? Does it really "expand your battery life"? Or did it become obsolete like most of the "task killers"?

at mine it does it very good, i do use the ultimate for 6 euro's on market... it really helps me since it makes it able to let my phone hang in the whole day instead of 8 hours. if u really need more battery live just buy a bigger battery along side, i use anker 1900 mah

I use it on ARHD ICS and to me it does seem to help. Could just be a placebo effect but I don't care, it's staying until I see otherwise.

i used it before (when i had Inc S)..... didn't feel any benefit from it while i was using it.

The best one
Hi guys
I try several pay and free apps ( include Juice defender ) to save battery but the only one I recommend and use to save at least 50% battery is Super Power from XDA Developer
Trick - On settings - Disconnect data for 30 min and reconnect periodic for 2~3 min to update mail, and all internet connections
Give a try
Best regards

Correct me, but isn't the development of SuperPower discontinued? More than 1 year ago?
I think I will give JuiceDefender another try...

I had juice defender on my nexus one and it was amazing. Phone for two days with moderate use. However when I installed in on my galaxy s2 it actually seemed to drain battery. And fast. Same settings and everything

[SK17i] Battery life

Hi,
I would like to gather some general thoughts about SK17i's battery life.
I got mine about 8 days ago, everything is good, but the battery life is really disappointing.
In a typical work day I have
- wifi - off
- bluetooth - on during driving, that amount to about 1.5 hours
- mobile network data enabled
- probably 1 hour on phone call, max
- email checked every 30min interval
- browsing - maybe 45min, max
- no task killer software installed
- rooted, build number 368
I unplugged the phone from charger at 7.30am, and now is 6.00pm, 11hours later, the batt is at 20%, about to start giving warning message already.
Is this the typical batt hour you guys get?
one more thing, mine is an Indonesia set so it comes with host of program that I cant use in Malaysia. I have uninstalled most of them, except this MoxierPro which I cant seem to get rid of. I also noticed the program "Games by pop cap" seems to be running actively in the background even though I never start it.
hope to get more input on this.
thanks

yeah its really disappointed but in my mini pro its gave me minimum 24 hours with all time edge+sync+50% brightness. not rooted. stock settings. you know one day i got 4 hours on 100% stats. will upload screenshot soon.
i think u didn't followed up intial instrucitons for battery life like first few days atleast 4 days keep it discharge 100%-4-5% even let it off and then charge again to 0%-100% again dischage same manner, do it atleast 4 times (means 4 days) but before that u need to formate completely and try again. hopes it helps you.
well after coming from x10 mini pro this mini pro really next to awesome. i love it too much. just some boltware apps need to remove. need some games if any have plz tell me.
I think some of the stock app killing the battery, plus the data connection is the most powerful battery drainer. Anyway, first get rooted and remove some of mind blowing stock app. If u can minimize the data connection and use wifi instead of it, that can help improve battery life. My mini pro lasts about 1 day 10hours with minimal data connection but always witb wifi turned on.
Sent from my SK17i using XDA App
on x10, it's been the same. after deleting some crap, the standy time increased from 2 days -> 8 days. especially playnow, trackid, timeshift & facebook including their extensings and plugins are draining the battery a lot.
i suggest to have look in this 2 threads and check, whats "save to remove"

additional there is a very good and simply to setup app you could try:
GREEN POWER - (availible as free and paid version)
http://www.appbrain.com/app/green-power-free-battery-saver/org.gpo.greenpower
Yup I think that some of the stock app is the cause of massive decrease of battery life at night, or during idle. But I just dont know what apps that cause this.
I really want to remove it asap

well i also want to remove, but by unlocking bootloader, i dont want to void the warranty also some features like xperia inside facebook, some camra function also may be stops to work so just waitng if any one root it without unlocking the bootloader. just like xperia x10 mini pro with superone click.
I am trying out Green power, seems to work well as it does not kill app but work from another angle: instead of always on data connection, I set it to turn on every 30 min using green power... so far it looks good.

well when its rooted then try to do a battery calibration
does it also have the BST-38 like the x10 mini pro?
You have to mention that because of the small design you can not expect that they implemented a more awesome battery that is small and has the same capacity like a battery of a large phone like the htc ones. otherwise such a awesome battery would have cost much more and would have made the price much more expensive.
As also the x10 mini pro has a lifetime of about one day I suggest it's the same here
Try turning of G3 and only use G2 if possible. otherwise we should wait until they ported cm7 to the mini pro where you can do this.
Nope, EP500 - 1200mAh, somewhat better talktime is promised in the specifications (5.5 hours) compared to old Mini Pro. But the device is still fresh, some customizations should improve battery life
Is there any high performance EP500 battery on market? like 2000mAh maybe?

Perhaps give time to cycle charge the battery several times (discharge fully, charge fully) so it will run optimal. The bloatware and the apps that keeps running on the background, uninstall them as they seem to be uninstallable. For the Popcap games, only way you can get rid of that is to have root and uninstall it. Since you mentioned you're rooted, take that useless crap out.
My unit is about to get a week old but I have very light usage and looks to me it can last best 3 days, so with normal usage will be definitely less than 2 days, which is like your experience. Anyway, the full cycles I am still trying to do and squeeze out what the EP500 can muster.
This is the best choice I can find on an alternative battery
Code:
http://cgi.ebay.com/130561150352
Looks like has double the capacity, which I believe should at least provide more juice. Planning to buy, but we better see what the fully optimal EP500 can do first.
Also, I'd like to share that I use SetCPU to downclock the CPU when idle to 122.88Mhz. When the phone not rooted, the lowest clock speed is ~245Mhz. In general our phones are more idle/standby than in use, so half the clock speed reduction will be good for the battery. As a sidenote, I wonder why Xperia models are like this (lowest stock clock speeds ~245Mhz), whilst Samsung ones go as low as 100Mhz.

I was on the same boat but you just need a bit of confidence. The SuperOneClick even the latest one will not work because the exploit is patched on the stock firmware. That's the reason why bootloader need be unlocked so you can flash the insecure boot.img kernel (opens the exploit), which will enable the SuperOneClick to root the phone.
If you're bothered about the unlock bootloader, that can easily be relocked again following the same process, and you're back to stock.
yes i am trying to understand the rooting process to uninstall apps that is killing the 1200 battery.
you can force stop it but once you use the app again you have to force stop it again, and that can get old quick.

that's the way android works. when you start an app it will remain there unless its programmed to terminate on quit or disable (ie. juicedefender) or have an exit option (ie. opera mobile). they say it has intelligent process management which keeps things in RAM so its instant when you relaunch, and if it needs the memory it will kill useless or sleeping processes.
there's this program "autostarts" (needs root) which you can set to disable apps to start on triggers (ie. after phone startup, or when connectivity state changes), and i use that to ensure that apps that i rarely use but still need in the phone, do not start unless i start them, thereby i save RAM. for instance, i disable TitaniumBackup, because there's no point its running unless i need to backup/restore apps.
I have a disabled data, the 23 hours off wifi, bluetooth every 2 days one hour, the screen brightness to 50%, and the unchecked bravia engine, 12 hours. Generic rom installed, uninstalled all possible programs.
The battery lasts very little.
to see if we can CM7, sure but the battery lasts.
Thank you

You need to reevaluate bro battery on this phone is sick I even have an extra battery and have never had to use it.

I used my phone moderately with some email usage, calls and a few games and i got about 13 hours of battery life and had about 6% battery juice left to spare. How are you getting som much battery life? Did you do anything with the Sprint Bloatware? Did you uninstall some apps or freeze the. P
Thanks in advance....
I use Y5 to auto enable/disable my WiFi connections. Keeps the phone on Wifi as much as possible and I don't have to mess with it.
Juice defender does that. Before I had wifi constantly on, gps, 4g and battery wasnt what id expect. I mean ive never had it die on me yet but close. No frills controls clock speed depending on how much I need. Since ive installed juice and no frills battery is way better.

depends on what im doing. If i plan to be using my phone in and out of my pocket alot, ill have juice defender turned on.
if i know im going to be talking alot that day, texting and not much need for internet, then ill just leave my 3g widget off for mobile network.
other then that, the phone has great battery life.
I must say, on my evo i got super annal about having full charge and wanting to keep charging it all the time. I swear id get an uneasy feeling in my stomach if it went below 50%. when i first got this phone and had the 10% marks instead of the 1% marks, my brain about blew up and i didnt know what to do! lol
but now ive began to like the 10% marks bc im not as annal about wanting to plug my phone in bc now i dont see the amount it dropped in the last few minutes.
in all.. i guess this phone was made for me, or like the windows 7 people "my name is logan, and i invented the photon"

I'm in the same boat as you. I've been using/trying juice defender and have it set on balanced. It says I save about 1.5% every day. I have to email accounts syncing, text about 50 a day and use about 10min of internet and I was down to 40% in 9hrs. This was with out make a phone call today. Juice defender doesn't seem to really help anything.
I use an app called Brightness Profiles from the Market. Used it on my old HTC Hero as well. Its a precise, quick and easy way to manually control the screen brightness. Most of the time indoors I have brightness set to 0 or 10% which is plenty bright for me and saves a ton of battery.

I was just noticing the brightness of the Photon's screen last night just before fallin asleep. My evo on 0% was DARK in a dark room, but at 100% in the sun you couldnt see. The photon seems to be in a different ballpark. 0% it still looks super bright and 100% is WOW a light in the sky.
when i look at when my battery is being drained the most, its def when that screen is on. i think a rom or theme with black/night colors will def help out because the bright colors of white are probably not any aid to the battery conservation.
yesterday i kept juice defender off all day. got 14 hours and 37 minutes till it hit the 30% mark and the icon changed colors. i had about 2 hours of web surfing, about 3 hours of total call time, and about 150 texts and almost a dozen MMS. (buddy just picked up a new chocolate lab puppy )
so im impressed. i def agree, looks like juice defender is not a good fit for the phone yet. the toggling radios on and off probably kills alot of power.
I have to agree, Juice Defender doesn't seem to be doing much. I get around 1.47-1.6 with JuiceDefender.
Other than that I run SetCPU with my profiles set up.
I some times when I am at work use a custom battery setting which pots screen at lowest and disables data during peak hours after 45 minutes of inactivity. It works great especially when I am at work and have some longer breaks between checking my phone. I also work and live right next to a sprint tower so I always have great coverage.

Juice Defender, 36-38 hours before switching to 2nd battery.
Set to sync all every 1 hour. Twitter, corporate mail, 2 gmails, corp calender, contacts, etc.
The main difference is I set the screen to off in Juice Defender under toggles, not to trigger the data on just because I pulled the phone out and turned the screen on, doesn't mean I want to get on the web. I can easily pull up local info w/o that. In the morning, and in the evening, wifi is on for 30 mins or less each time to download podcasts on doggcatcher.
Lots of texts, calls , 150+ emails delivered a day, plenty of app usage, plenty of google.com searches. Maybe 1-2 app updates a day. Audio and video usage around 3-4 hrs daily.
I can go to work at 7:20 in the morning, get off at 5-5:30, and my batt stats are 75% left. Am usually sitting at 60-65% left by that 12th hour.

That's because you actually use your phone. These people who claim 30+ hrs of battery just have it sitting around most of the day not doing anything on it...very minimal use. For people who bought a smart phone to actually use the "smart" features of it, they will see anywhere between 8 -15, of good use. Keep in mind these phone are only rated for 7-8 hrs of continuous use, max. I say, use it how you want, don't cripple your phone with auto killers and apps that turn your data off, that's the whole point of your smart phone is to consume and transmit data. Use it how its meant to be used and enjoy it!

Why buy juice defender when the photon has these features built in. Just go to battery mode and chose "Maximum battery saver". After 15 mins it will turn off all syncing activity. Also when you're not using your phone turn off syncing completely it really helps your phone last 10-15 hours easily. I'm a very heavy user so while I'm at work I just turn off sync! Plus I also received a replacement battery from Motorola because my original battery had problems. I couldn't get more than 8 hours with the first battery (maybe defective) so they sent new one.
I agree with the post on people claiming 20-30 hrs.. they flat out dont google and drool over theyre screen all day.. like most others do though.. that is why batt life is always always will be a huge issue!
Nothing ever really will help kernels.. roms ...juice def..undervolting.. it really
dont make the huge diff people expect..
Samsung has about the best batt life youll find on an android device.. with the exception of a few devices.. dual core affects alot more than a noticeable benifit!
Only real option to date is a EXTENDED BATTERY!

[TIPS] Longer Battery Life

Some one just tonite asked me how I can possibly get 15+ hours on a single charge using my new Amaze 4G. Just to give you a bit of background, since having the vibrant and the unofficial leaks of Froyo that popped up here and there I was always looking to improve my battery life in every which way while not comprimising my user experiance. For those that dont know, the Vibrant was stuck on Eclair for a really really long time and we resorted to building Froyo roms using the i9000 source which for some reason killed battery like you would believe. After weeks of playing and testing I came to a few generic tips that seem to drastically help (beyond the obvious things you normally would expect).
This is what I personally do and have found to work, you take them or leave them makes no differance to me whatsoever, just friendly suggestions.
The Super Duper Number 1 thing I've found to HUGELY improve my battery life was instead of using gsm (4g/3g/edge) I use Wifi whenever possible. Most of my time is spent at home or work where I have routers. For whatever reason using wifi is less taxing on the battery then gsm. Also changing the wifi sleep policy to never will add to this.
Since i spend most my day inside i keep my brightness relatively low. I do not use auto brightness unless I really need to.
Obviously I keep my gps off unless I absolutely need it.
Sense has some neat power saving features to help with sync settings at certain times... i.e. during my sleeping time, it automatically change my sync to every 2 hours rather then every 15 min like its typically set to during the day.
The few steps above have helped me acheive 15+ hours on a single charge. Some other things that should help even more would be:
Limit the number of widgets you run (especially the ones that constantly update)
Dont use Live Wallpaper
Extend your sync intervals on email and social apps... instead of every 10 move to every 20
make sure when you are away from wifi you turn your wifi off
If you are in an area with poor coverage (especially 4g) turn your data to edge only
Not sure about LCD but on my samoled keeping screen colors to darkest possible (black wallpapers, etc) helps conserve a bit
Change you timeout setting to the lowest you can stand possible (15sec, 30sec)
Avoid task killer apps... let the system do its job or use the built in task killer for those apps you wish to close. (I know the verdict is out on whether they help or not, but I believe using auto app killers does more damage then good, they were designed for old android versions that didnt function the way GB does now)
That's it for now... if I can remember or think of any more I will def post. Like I said you can take or leave my advice. Please do me one favor.... if you DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING POSITIVE TO ADD THEN KEEP YOUR NEGATIVTY TO YOURSELF. It makes for a happier forum! Thanks
how do you access the internal task killer? i havent seen it.. but i see it in the applications when i manage my apps.
and i think the one thing i do wrong is never switch to wifi lol
my previous devices would drain faster on wifi than gsm
but i will give it a try
thanks
I've heard this also WiFi + radio drains more than just radio unless you have a crappy connection then you are better.off with wifi. Gr8 guide tho .... Use less sync people the weather is the same as it was 2h ago.... Unless its raining

To also help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly: 1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more 2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour 3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well.

drag down the notification tab click on quick settings click on total memory.
Radio by itself drains more battery then using wifi + radio... trust me i've been doing it for 2+ years. also had all my team mates do the same and they all confirmed a huge boost in battery. as long as you are CONNECTED to a wifi router it will not drain. now if you leave the wifi and keep it on along with radio on, that will totally demolish your battery. its the constant searching on both parts that eats the most battery. if youre solid connected... its no longer searching.
I did all that and then some and my battery shows 120 to 200 MA in standby . I used to have htc hd2 and it had 3 to 5 MA in standby . I don't know what to disable anymore , Or is this normal for this phone ?
Juice Defender is the best way to conserve battery on any android phone.... try it out on the app market. doing all these other tips you mentioned does help very little. but if you wish to have your battery last a lot longer then Juice Defender is the way to go...

I was going to post the same thing, and found this here - lol. I have been trying this for a few days already.
I will add some minor modifications though. The above was done when devices and batteries were smaller. The 8 hours might be enough - see if the light changes from amber to green by then (or the battery indicator) - otherwise wait.
Then also wait on the 1st 1 hour charge while off if the light is still amber at one hour - wait until it is green. Ditto on the second one.
I did it just like the original above, and when I turned my phone on at the end - it was at 93%, so I plugged it in until it hit 100% for a while, disconnected, and then did a battery calibration (APP) at 100%
Again - I think with the bigger battery it takes longer. on a MT4G, the light was green at the end of each hour (smaller battery).
I have seen a significant improvement - and I already had battery saving profiles set up with SETCPU. I may do it one more time the way I modified it above.
PS - I always get better life on WiFi (If connected). Also, a friend lives in a weak (data) signal area, and when not on WiFi, keeping it on 2g (edge) really upped her life on a MT4G

I mainly posted that for proof of concept. The only way I ever got what I wanted out of a battery was through SBC kernels. That's one reason way I am leaving the Evo and switching to the Amaze, outside of the crap Sprint puts customers through.
Is the Ultimate app worth it?
Hell yea it's worth it. Because without it when your device is asleep it's still connected to 4g and whatever else. But with juice defender it turns off everything the moment you put the phone to sleep saving you a lot battery for when you really need to use your phone so yes. Its a must I feel like it should be mandatory on every android phone.

x2 on that... It really gives you a longer battery life. and having 2 batteries also extends the life to 24 hours + of not having to sit and wait for a full charged battery.
If you want to see your Sense force closing after every restart + plus having other problems such as frozen clock, etc, then use Juice Defender. After a week of constant problems caused by this app (and I was using it on the Balance mode), I was that close to returning my Amaze, because initially I thought there was some software defect, till one day I googled it and found out the real reason. Uninstalled it and my problems disappeared at once (actually I did a factory reset just to make sure its all gone). Just a fair warning.

Been on it for a week and and I haven't seen those type of problems and I'm using aggressive...
I was using Ultimate v. 3.80, tried it on my girlfriend's phone (she was using the free version before I installed the ultimate), started force closing too (she was about to kill me haha)... Check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315494
P.s. Juice Defender team said the problem occurs with Plus and Ultimate because they use API call, which is incompatible with Android compatibility test suite... Im just saying all this so if people start getting these launcher force closes after restart, not to freak out and just uninstall it...

I had juice defender on my note and removed it it ruins push notifications face book words with friends email and so on. if you toggle mobile data that would be the only reason to use it only if you have poor service where you usually are. just go through your apps and set everything to communicate at least every hour or longer. It doesn't extend any life unless you cripple everyday functionality. It could actually drain more life because if data is disabled and email or an app goes to fetch data its gonna spend a bunch trying to sync draining more battery then if you just had synced it. i noticed words with friends is set to sync every 5 mins by default and that's no good. Just take time and sort your app usage out and youll be your own juice defender. Juice defender use to say its getting me 1.75 more battery then i removed it and my usage was the same but battery and functionality was better. Just my experience.
If you still wanna try use advanced tab change night mode to off pretty much it.read through every setting. http://www.juicedefender.com/overview/

JuiceDefender Ultimate

Does JuiceDefender Ultimate actually helps to reduce battery? As I'm using Miracle V4 and play games abit and the battery drains
No. Save your money. It messed up my phone and took a lot of energy for itself. Search for battery tutorial instead. There are few apps which help u to analyse which apps consume most batterylife. Or buy new battery for 7 €

not really. its for lazy people who constantly forgot to turn off bluetooth, wifi etc. all what it does can be done manually.
some say it actually uses more battery as it closes cached (not running) apps which are then forced to reload when called - consuming more CPU - Hence - More battery!

Yep i confirm that. And if not setup properly it causes problems e.g not waking up data connection. After i deinstalled i didnt even get Data connection
Edit: what i found in another thread is that there could be metal swarf the chargejack (sorry asked Google for translation) that cause battery drain. So u could try cleaning with air pressure

According to the app I extended my battery life with x1.3 but I didnt really feel any difference. Removed the app cause of the ram usage primarily.
The app is really good
Customize everything on your own
It would help a lot
And get the ultimate version and use the advance configuration
Everything is explained perfectly

I just use Autostarts so that apps that run on background will just be disabled in the first place.
Better to just configure stuff yourself. Its free and doesnt cause conflicts that could arise from enabling stuff that juice defender disables. I used juice defender free at first when i didnt know anything about battery and it helped a lot. Then I tried it again when i learnt enough about what drains battery and had my phone configured, this time juice defender was worthless and actually increased battery consumption.

believe me if u know that bluetooth , wifi , GPRS/EDGE use battery and is not a lazy asss. u dont need to waste ur precious money on such battery and RAM hogger...
whats the use if automatically switches to airplane mode at night and one day at 3 am there is someone calling u for emergency and alas ur phone is on airplane mode...
it runs in background eats up ur RAM and BATTERY TOO....
if u are on a custom rom.... just push down the notification and use the 14 toggles mod... y waste precious bucks for just 3 click???
IMP: if u constantly use ur [hone .. juice defender cant do a ****.... its only useful if u just switch on ur phone 2 times in 3 hrs...
In my experience it saves me about 3 hours of battery a day. So yeah, I think it is worth it.
I'm using premium instead of ultimate by the way.

Same, Plus user here. When I used the stock ROM, the battery life was impressive with it. But when I switched to a custom one, the difference was little to none. Even when I leave my phone screen switched off when not using, it would last a max of 3-4 days before I've to recharge.
There are definitely some issues with JD ultimate.
Battery drained out completely overnight when I don't have any schedule running, not sure what ate the battery frm 36% to 0. I am regretting that I paid money for this app when it didn't work as advertised.
