[Q] New Evo 3D owner need advice - HTC EVO 3D

Hello all,
I traded that sorry BB Playbook for a lovely Evo 3D. Now I want to root 2.3.5 and I have Hboot 1.5. There is a lot of information that I have combed through but its really confusing. I have a Nexus S and an Evo 4g rooted without issue, but EVO 3D appears to have too many ways to root and I'm not sure where to start. If someone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Check the stickies of the development forum for how to downgrade your hboot, after that, use revolutionary to s-off your phone.
Better yet, here's the downgrade thread

I would recommend htcdev.com for the official 1.5 unlock. Its easier and safer than downgrading your boot loader.

Dude please go back to sucking on your mothers nipple as you have no Idea what you are talking about.
@OP stay away from HTCdev.com do the downgrade it is well worth it in the end yes it does sound scary that you have to brick your phone to achieve h-boot 1.4 with s-off but it works 100% I have done the method and now sitting with an evo3d with h-boot 1.4 s-off running Meanrom with the Anthrax kernel.

Seeing as you HAVE to use the HTCDev method to unlock it in the first place, I would say you have failed. Massively.

I recently had my EVO 3D replaced by sprint, kept rebooting randomly even after superwipe and flashing completely back to stock. Received a replacement with 1.5 hboot. I downgraded it just fine, never used HTCDev method.

you dont need to do the HTC unlock method to downgrade the instructions I quite clear in unknownforces thread.

If you don't want to go through the process of downgrading. I reccomend

If you are new to rooting and not very computer savy I would recommend htc's unlock method it will give you root albeit with s-on. But if you understand Linux and are good on a computer. I say go ahead with the down grade by unknownforce. I'm gonna do it this weekend. It'll be nice to have s-off.

[Q] S-Off, OneX and EVO LTE

I have a very noob question that I was unable to find an answer to while searching the forums.
It seems that (understandably) the OneX development is much further along than the EVO LTE. My guess is that S-OFF will (hopefully) be achieved soon for that phone. My question is: how well will achieving S-OFF on the OneX translate to the EVO LTE considering the phones are, to my understanding, so much alike.
Will S-OFF on the OneX mean S-OFF for the EVO LTE shortly after?
Thank you ahead of time for answering my noob question.

IM debating whether to use the one step method regaw_leinad created for us which uses HTCdev.com or wait for S-off... I'm curious to know whether or not it changes the HBOOT to begin with?

In the same boat. I'm dying to get rid of this bloatware and I have several apps that require superuser, but I don't want to hassle with un-rooting/re-rooting when an S-OFF method is released.
Though I must admit I'm still pretty new to all this. What does having S-OFF give us the ability to do?

Can't recall the specific thread, but do some searching. People are able to do everything without s-off. We can flash ROMs, recoverys, even kernels. There's no real reason to get s-off because of this

The only reason for S-off is if you don't want to void warranty then? It also looks like there will be a big hassle to get updates pushed to the device. I hope there is a leak of the Eng bootloader.

Right now everything can be done with S-ON EXCEPT flashing radios. Unlike older phones this one also lets you flash kernels with S-ON. I currently have just rooted the phone over stock so when a method is available I will be able to revert back to stock untampered bootloader in 15 minutes with an RUU wipe then completely S-OFF the phone.

Why are people waiting for s_off. Seems to me unlocked bootloader with s_on is perfect for the vast majority of root users. I know the first thing I did when I got the phone is head on over to HTC Dev. I really couldn't care less if s_off is never achieved.

If you use HTC Dev, yes you are right but he's talking about just rooting without unlocking the bootloader in which case the RUU will remove the "tampered" message.

Latest S-OFF root method ??

OK, Im ready to root my new EVolTE, whats the best method to root giving me S-OFF? I might not flash any rooms for now, but will root just to get tether.
Any advice?
rooting
Right now the only way to get S-Off is to go to HTCdev and get it there, but that isn't "true" S-Off from what I understand, and rooting and S-Off are 2 diff things, to actually root get on youtube and search rooting evo 4g lte, there is a great vid there on how to do it, make sure you have a unzipping program first. it's a piece of cake
S-Off hasn't been officially hacked yet.
Hope this helps

Evol lte doesn't have s-off yet. You can gain root without flashing anything and htcdev is so can install a custom recovery, which gives you ability to flash a rom.
I've been wondering about this myself. I haven't even seen any word on whether anyone is working on getting s-off for this thing. I've been hoping for CM9 to come to the new EVO eventually. Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you need s-off to flash AOSP? If that's the case then they probably wouldn't even start work on it until someone finds a way to get s-off. I just miss CM7 from my OG EVO and unfortunately there was never a fully working version for the 3D. I really considered getting the Galaxy Nexus but I couldn't pass up the HW specs on this thing.
HTC dev unlock is enough for aosp kush has a cm9 wip that boots

s-off isn't needed, we can flash kernel and radios right thru recovery now, the only thing we can't flash are splash screens which isn't a big deal at all..

One thing i don't understand is right on htcs website in the faq it talks about how the bootloader still has security enabled to protect the radios. If that's true how is it that we can flash radios? I thought htc specifically blocked that with their method.

coming over from the ol 4g

I'm having to come over via insurance and the 3d is what I get. I have a few questions. Is obtaining root on the 3d a difficult process, as doing it on the 4g was simple. Ive noticed that there are 2 different models. CDMA or the other one which one is the one being given out. And overall how has everyones experience been with this phone. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

If your hboot is 1.4, you can root with Revolutionary. If it's 1.5, you will have to use the hboot downgrade method, found in the stickies.

If you're on Sprint, you have the CDMA version.
It isn't hard at all, if you understand adb. You can root with revolutionary on hboot 1.4 or downgrade if you have hboot 1.5. If you dont want to downgrade try the juopunutbear tool for s-off. It work the first try for me.

Welcome bud, I also got an evo 3d through insurance. Although I think the 4g had a better camera and I miss the looks, the 3d is a lot faster and has a much better screen. I've learned to love it.
Easiest way to do things is follow the htcdev.com unlock process to unlock the bootloader. Install superuser of course, then get 4ext recovery. There is a free version but I would highly recommend getting the paid version as I think it includes the app that lets you control everything from outside recovery. This has a smart flash feature for those who're left with s-on from the HTC unlock and hboot 1.5. It will let you install kernels like you normally would through recovery.
Only problem is, with any sense 3.6 ICS Rom you will have to use chads HTC leak kernel or else you will get boot loops. However 3d and USB mount won't work but you can always mount through recovery.
If you don't want to deal with all that, you can try the wire trick method to get s-off on hboot 1.5 so you can use the stock kernel on sense 3.6. It's stickied here in development. Hope all that helps.

Thanks for the feedback.. Im not going to lie. I love my ole evo but the last time I dropped it Did something to the Battery. I have a 3500 ex battery that if in the phone it will shut off every 10 to 20 mins. that and the charging port is failing. At least I get another HTC.

There is no s-off for hboot 1.15 yet.
The reason you should not take the OTA is because there is a new hboot, which means it will probably be a very long time before you can get s-off on 1.19.
If you can hold out awhile longer, s-off should be possible on 1.15, then you can do whatever you want, update radio, etc.

I know what you know, but if you look at the evo 3d and most phones, the pattern is that the first hboot is cracked quickly, the next one soon after, and the third takes a while(at least a year). There are still plenty of devs that haven't upgraded to the LTE yet.
Also, since htc has updated hboot again, has led many to believe on this forum that HTC found an exploit in 1.15 and patched it. With the phone this new, I bet s-off will be achieved with 1.15 relatively soon. But again, no sources, just my possibly flawed logic.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
If anyone knew 100% that it would be possible to crack it would already be cracked.
We are making assumptions bbased on the fact that HTC released hboot 1.19. They don't usually do that unless it patches vulnerabilities used to gain S-OFF
Does anyone know WHY HTC doesn't want us to have s-off? Even if we void the warranty doing it through their method. I would be completely satisfied if HTC dev let me have s-off.

Because S-OFF gives you the ability to really screw things up. They are protecting you from yourself
I understand that logic, but at the same time I don't. If I want to mess up my phone, let me. If they don't want to cover it under warranty, I understand. But let me mess my phone up. Lol

What if they let us get s-off by providing our serial numbers? It seems like it would benefit them to let us get s-off via them. Then they could blacklist our serial numbers, if we do it, there isn't much they can do because as you mentioned, it's hard to tell once it's bricked.

I wonder if one reason they close the exploits as fast as they can, and the reason their unlocker wipes the phone, is a liability issue their lawyers told them to do. So nobody can do this to somebody else's phone and access "sensitive data" or something.

The wipe is a pretty standard unlocking procedure. The nexus's do that as well I believe. Its a security thing

Different ways to get HTC EVO LTE S-OFF

Curious if there is any other ways to achieve S-Off on an already rooted EVO hboot 1.12 other than DirtyRacun as I am not having any luck with that method.

I am also on hboot 1.12 and am currently S-ON rooted and HTCDEV unlocked. Looking for an S-Off method other than DirtyRacun because I have x64 Windows and would really rather not update my hboot for S-OFF or mess around with Linux.
If I could get a hold of the Lazy Panda file would it be helpful based on my situation?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yesterday I did the deed, and got S-OFF. I was running a 1.12 hboot after downgrading several months earlier. Had to RUU up to a 1.19 hboot for the Racun to do it's thing. Otherwise it was a quick, and painless operation. If you need help go the #unlimited IRC channel on freenode.net.
If you're already hboot 1.12, lazypanda is a simple executable that needs no more than administrative privileges and 5-10 minutes.

Why not upgrade from 1.12 to 1.19 to use dirtyracun? Only reason why not to upgrade before was because there wasn't an s off method for 1.19 lol

Problem now is, Lazy Panda is no longer supported by Team Unlimited. If you get into a tight spot and need help, you're potentially going to be screwed. Having said that, myself and many others have successfully used it since support for it ceased. Risk versus reward, I suppose.

Juopunutbear is no longer supported on the 3D, but I was able to use it successfully just a couple weeks ago on a used phone I got from eBay for my wife. As long as you follow the directions as closely as possible, you shouldn't run into any issues.

So is there now way to get soff on a new device these days? WTF?
Just had to get my phone replaced and I can't seem to find clear direction on how to get S-Off anymore. Can't believe it.
I don't even know how to function with a S-On phone. Seriously.

You can use FacePalm found in original development if you are not on the latest OTA 3.16.651.3

I JUST used Lazy Panda after being rooted on the newest software update and it wasn't a problem. Don't hesitate to use it.

I'm calling BS on this ^^^^^
LazyPanda is no longer supported and unless you have the files you cannot find them anywhere.
LazyPanda ONLY works for hboot 1.12 it will not work on "the newest software update"

Well it cane with 3.16.651.3 so I am out of luck there.
So it looks like I am stuck like chuck for now. :sigh:
I actually have the lazy panda files but don't have the instructions for my hboot.
Gotta say reading the lazy panda page reads like a 12 year old girl got soff on our device.

DirtyRacun will work on 3.16 but you have to use Linux (windows is no longer supported)
I did BabyRacun so I could install 3.15 and finished with FacePalm. Had not one issue other than user error. Lol. Worked great. Did that today on my replacement of which Sprint decided to update fully.
