It just dawned on me now that I am using Launcher Pro that when I long press, I no longer get the option to add a Samsung Widget to my home screen.
Any way around this?
... other than just going back to stock launcher ?
Nope. The Samsung widgets are part of TouchWiz.

So are many other elements of the device (notification panel, different contacts app, etc etc etc). Using another launcher app does not disable Touchwiz as a whole, its just a new launcher. The widgets are still <i>there</i> I'm just not able to get to them right now, so I'm hoping maybe someone is able to yank the APK or something so we're able to use them in non-default launchers.
They were written to be recognized and used by the Touchwiz launcher, they're not compatible with the ASOP launcher which is why they won't show up with other launchers. HTC Sense widgets have the same issue, and aside from completely rebuilding them, they haven't really found a way around it.

um, no they're not. As I am using the LauncherPro Beta right now. The notification panel is stock, the contact is stock everything is stock except the dock bar at the bottom, which is different and better and the drawer which Is 3D!!! I love it.

That is exactly what I was saying.
Using a different launcher (i.e. LaunderPro) does not "disable TouchWiz" and therefore you should still be able to use the TouchWiz widgets. Everything else is still there and TouchWiz is most definitely still there, running, etc... changing the Launcher is not disabling TouchWiz.

it does disable touchwiz. touchwiz is the launcher app. so when your not in touchwiz, you don't have it.
just like unless your on the sense home, you don't get the sense widgets.
the touchwiz widgets require the touchwiz launcher.
don't bother asking or repeating again because there is simply no way to make it work short of rebuilding the entire app as has been said.
Touchwiz and the touchwiz launcher are two different things.
You cannot "disable touchwiz" without flashing a custom rom. It IS the modified OS.
You are right that the widgets are built into the twlauncher apk, so you can't use them in any other launcher.
Let's be sure we aren't confusing touchwiz with twlauncher...
touchwiz is a skin on top of the android os just like sense is.......you disable the touchwiz launcher then everything associated with touchwiz is disabled only giving access to basic android widgets.
Oh lawrdy, the fighting...
When I was using launcher pro I couldn't use samsung widgets, but the apps were unaffected.. So just disabling touchwiz launcher disables the widgets (or makes them harder to use at least) but the apps with the phone (including the notification bar) keep going...
So even if you just disable the launcher, you lose the widgets (unless they are just hiding because the samsung widget button was gone and they weren't in my regular widget are either)
im no dev here and my coding knowledge is minimal so sorry if i sound stupid saying this, but if the twlauncher is integrated to the framework, couldnt someone use a modify a launcher replacement by kanging some code from the twlauncher so the launcher replacement utilizes the framework or is it much more complicated than that?

If I'm understanding you correctly then yes it is that simple, but figuring out how to do that is not simple without the code...

Okay ladies Ill explain all lol, disabling the touchwiz launcher does in no way effect the widgets but you cannot use them in other launchers because they are not programmed to recognize them touchwiz itself is the custom framework that samsung has created for this phone, so if a dev enabled it you could use them in any launcher as long as the system/framework/twframework.jar and twframework-res.apk are there along with some key files in the sytem/lib folder to associate them to the system so really the launcher is nothing but a pretty blind over the window if you will and in no way stops you from using the widgets other than the other launchers are not programmed to look for them.
On the S2, it seems when you remove an app, the app drawer doesn't re-org it just leaves a gap meaning it has to be manually sorted. Is there a way to automatically sort it other than using the list view?
I also have a similar question to this that I can't find the answer to anywhere..
Basically I have the same problem with around 9 app drawers half filled. I could sit here for an hour dragging each app icon, one at a time, to other app drawers to consolidate them into less drawers but it's very tedious and annoying to do this.
In some apps, I can select multiple icons (such as multiple pictures) and then move them all to another folder, or perform an action on all the selected icons; I can't seem to find a way to do this with my non-rooted SGS2.
I'm trying to find an app that will allow me to set categories and then assign app icons to those categories and then be able to sort all my icons based on the different categories... again, I've not had any success finding an app like that...
...so I've ended up here, on XDA Forums, to ask the people who know more than me.

you have let me think 3 options or maybe two...either download appzorter application from the market..that basically will sort all your applications in alphabetical order and also the folders you create. then if you have gaps it will sort that for you as well and fill the empty spaces.
or second option use a different launcher from the market and it sorts the icons and folders for you.
one launcher that lets you organize your apps into categories i think its either nova launcher or 360 launcher..no need to be rooted or anything like that to be able to use those apps. good luck let me know how you guys get on
Thanks, I have the EX Launcher.. but I don't like it because I have to setup the home screen gain and I had trouble finding the same widgets I had on the out-of-the-box launcher.. maybe I will try again one day.. but for now I will have a look at appzorter to solve my immediate annoyances
+1 for Appzorter
Why Samsung didn't include this function is beyond me.

Samsung does. But on Epic 4G which has an auto organized TW4 launcher. I only fine one custo which ported it to our model. But i am not able to make it run on another rom. So bad...

Is there a way to hide certain apps from the app drawer without rooting? I know there are different launchers that are able to do this but I like the stock Sense launcher.
Also, Is there a way to remove the recent apps from the notification bar?
Thanks in advance.

I could be totally wrong here but it seems like what you're asking for is going to require root.

Even if I rooted, I think the only way would be for me to use Root Explorer and renaming the .apk file to .bak... Unless anyone else knows of other methods?
Why do you want to hide them? Are you trying to hide bloatware w/o rooting?
I think rooting is going to be the way to go. Sure you can find some launchers that hide them, but Sense doesn't play nicely with them.
I use launcher pro (rooted, BeastMOD 1.3.1), so I have two docks with 5 icons each with a standard and a swipe gesture. i also have widgets for more important things, so the ONLY use I have for my app drawer is to access apps that I use relatively rarely.
For example, I have the Digital Clock widget on my home screen. I have zero use to look at an icon for it taking up space in my app drawer.
I have a similar (but different) question. Is is possible to organize the downloaded apps in the drawer in alphabetical order? It currently puts the most recently dl'd apps at the top, making finding apps a pain in the ass. My phone is stock and unrooted.

Without rooting I guess you must use some launcher with function to hide or grouping.
I used ADW EX and it caused no problem with stock Sense. With ADW you can set up groups and put apps that you don't like into a group and name it "junk" or something like that and never touching that group when open app drawer ...
Edit: Sorry for my replied making no sense since you stated that you wanted Sense ... Just disregard this post
Oh well...sense is too nice to give up for another launcher..

This is my first android experience. I got the Note 2 and decided to try out Nova launcher after so many raving reviews. I download and installed it but whenever I click on my gmail widget, the theme reverts back to touchwiz. Everything seems to be okay. Is it not compatible with gmail? Or am I missing something (setting?) Thanks

Did you make nova launcher as default launcher?I also think that nova needs root for widgets.
To make nova default launcher go to nova settings and in "Select default Home" select nova

Yes, I did. But any time I click on my gmail widget, it reverts back. Once I hit the Nova shortcut icon, Nova comes back. I'd love to be able to use this launcher. I'm trying to stay away from rooting at this time. If it requires it, I'll just use stock TW for now.

If that's true, that's a bummer.. I've already uninstalled Nova but my agenda widget was working fine. It was the gmail widget that was causing TW to reappear after I closed out from the gmail widget. Don't use that many widgets, (mail, calendar, agenda, task) but if they dont play nice with Nova, I'll have to stick with TW.

Not True. I have Nova (prime) installed and have been able to use every widget. (it may be helpful to enable widget overlaping in the settings.)
Having the same problem on my SIII but I'm rooted and it only happens when I use the back button to get out of apps, it will back out of the app to touchwiz. I have nova as default so as soon as i hit the home button nova is back. It didn't start until I updated to Jelly Bean. On ICS nova was running smooth as butter.
Nova crashes a lot. I am rooted and have sent crash logs to the Dev and sent seperate emails and have heard nothing back. I like it but when looking through widgets in the drawer it crashes, when resizing from time to time it crashes and when attempting to move a widget yup it crashes. Not all the time but more than it should.
I'm using Nova Prime and not rooted and all of my widgets are working fine.
First try to remove the widget and add it again with nova.
Second clear the default action for TW (in application)
Last i advise you to freeze TW : in application too, normaly the button for uninstal is changed by a "Disable" button.
Try apex. Almost same deal as nova but I like it a little better
Is that a hemi? No silly its Paranoid Android!

Same thing happens here! I've tried everything. I think it might be having too many things widgets or some issues with custom home screen grids.
I thought it might be the snote page widget and this slide show widget. Removed both and now it doesn't crash when resizing.
When scrolling through widgets in the app drawer.... I found awesome widgets pro to be causing the problem so I just uninstalled that.
Really hope they fix this since I'm missing my slide show widgets-tried several and my snote widget.
Never going back to touchwiz though ha!
Mines the paid version if that helps. I really really like nova and the landscape mode. Just the issue with the widgets really bugs me, and the few hours I've spend trying to solve it.!
I have APW as well. It has been hit or miss with crashes. I restored the other day and things have been good for the most part. I am a heavy widget used which I am sure is the problem.

I know this phenomenon as well...and here´s my "solution": This was my experience everytime I got a new Samsung phone. Suddenly, Android jumps back from Nova to TW (e.g. Site Buddy on the Note). And it ALWAYS stopped this behavior after a few days of usage. It was always that easy

Hehe, that´s why I wrote "solution" in quotation marks! For me, there never was a real "solution" for this issue, the problem simply dissapeared after a few hours/days of usage!
I see! Let's hope it's the case for me too! Although I'm not sure since I've Been using nova for a while, the problems just stated though.

I checked the title suggestions and the S3 doesn't have a solution in them... The suggestions for other phones don't seem very good either, although I will take a look at LauncherPro.
Question:
Is there a way to restore widgets to their correct screens and locations? I like trying ROMs and I've got saving/restoring my data and apps down so I don't lose anything but widgets are a pain. I get the big red rectangles but not the widgets. Have no problems paying for an app that does it, so I'm not just looking for a freebie handout.
Ideally the app would also restore apps and data into a new ROM, but I'd be happy if it just looked after my widgets. I run 7 home screens and have my Launcher at 6 columns x 7 rows - I don't mind having to set that up prior to restore but again, ideally it would be nice if the app would restore those settings.
*grins* Not asking much... am I?

From my experience, which is limited to Apex Pro, I can tell you that restoring the home screens work for logos & folders of apps, whereas somehow my widgets (I got 1 widget, which is the calendar in agenda view) does not work somehow. Maybe other launchers can do it though.
Thanks chrismast - it seems to be an issue. I can't find anything on Playstore that specifically says it will restore widgets, even if you're on a stock layout. Maybe it is too hard given all the changes and layouts people have on their devices? le sigh...
Its very rare to restore Widgets as they were.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
@rootSU - do you mean it is rare that people put widgets back as they were or that it is rare to be able to restore them as they were? The 2nd one, yep! Having all kinds of problems trying to find a way to do it automatically. The 1st possibility - I like to try different ROMs and see what they are like to use - to do that I really need to have the same set up in each so I can compare. Restoring widgets to what they were before an upgrade seems a logical thing to do, so I am puzzled it hasn't been addressed before now.
Maybe I am just a bit odd?

Yes the latter. I ONCE managed to restore fully using titanium backup. I suppose it depends on the type of widgets. Go launcher and Nova have internal backup features, but all it does is put the widgets in their places. I still have to "tap to restore widget" which for some is great, they just pop back up but others that are configurable, i still have to go through all the config again.

Not for me. Once I restore widgets like:
Tasker tasks
Set CPU
Beautiful Widgets
Pure Calendar
Simi Clock
I have to go into each and set my preferred settings.
