Seems that every ROM I look at in here has a bunch of issues. I'm coming over from the OG Evo, and know nothing about photon's development- although I get the gist its an underappreciated device. Just looking for something to make it worth rooting the photon, which is a great phone imo.

have you tried CM9? sure theres a few bugs but its my daily. otherwise i hear that miui is turning out pretty good but i havnt flashed it myself for a few builds. you could always try cm7 or rokko also.
CM7 and CM9 are the best. Use both of them, CM7 is more stable and all works, but CM9 is very smooths and awesome!

As quick as it is to root the Photon I would do it just for the ability to use root apps. Then, try some of the custom locked roms available before you unlock. CM9 is a great rom but still a beta and has issues such as camera, signal, battery, etc. which is to be expected.
I still prefer the stock rom just because of full functionality, battery life, and signal quality but there are many good custom roms based off stock builds (which I have not tried) that might work well for you.
Running CM7 here and am happy with that as my daily driver. Not brave enough to try CM9 but that's just my personal preference/bias. Joker's non CM9 roms & Lokifish Marz's roms are also good choices.
Three great roms:
-CM7 (KANG)
-ROCKO 3.0 (NOT 3.5)
-Imperium Initiative 1.04
As for which is better... It's a tossup. CM7 last longer, but ROCKO feels more fluid and user friendly. CM7 is more technical...
CM9 is very impressive but it is a beta.

I finally took the dive into unlocking my Photon's bootloader, (having never done it before on a phone) and I had almost zero issues rooting/unlocking/flashing the ROM.

I'd like to quickly point out that Jokersax's CyanogenMod 9 beta is honestly pretty stable. The camera, MMS, signal, and battery life is very much exceeding my expectations, considering this is a rom that is labelled as a beta.
I'd also like to state my opinions towards the OP's original question: In order of stability, here is what I would recommend.
1-Stock. (obviously).
2-HomeBase
3-CyanogenMod 7.2
4-RockoRom 3.0 (3.5 is good as well, but based on experience I recommend 3.0)
5-Jokersax's CyanogenMod 9, link is in the beginning of my post.
6-Imperium Initiative
Finally, 7-[email protected]/[email protected]
The rom I use the most is Jokersax's CyanogenMod 9. It's a very good rom.
Quickly-- One last thing. If you DO flash a rom, please please please PLEASE do not complain about the battery life until you do these steps:
~Let your battery drain to 0%
~Charge your battery to 100%
~Wipe battery stats via the advanced menu in a custom recovery(recommended), or an application
~Drain battery to 0%, then charge to 100%.
Then you can complain about the battery life... if it's bad, that is. Lol.

I was comparing CM9 to stock and there is no way CM9 has better battery than stock. Not even close. In my experience with running CM roms on multiple devices they all seem to drain the battery more I would assume due to the kernels used. I know this doesn't really have anything to do with stability but relates to the overall feel of the OP question I think which is why I mentioned it.
With that said roms are going to run different for each user especially with a beta build.

I don't quite remember saying that the battery life was better than stock... But surely sir, you must be doing something wrong. I have 2 photons running cm9, one is activated and one is not, the one that is activated has the minimum at 216 mhz and the max at 1300 mhz, and it's usual cpu is going at 800mhz-ish. the one that is not activated is clocked to the max at 1300mhz constantly, min is 1300 and max is obviously 1300. they both run roughly the same amount of time before dying, usually 7/8hrs. with stock, not rooted, my batter lasts anywhere from 8-9hrs being heavily used.
I never said that the battery life was better than stock on cm9, i said it was EXCEEDING MY EXPECTATIONS FOR A BETA. Sir, you honestly should double check the post of which you're criticizing before you make such an accusation.
And of course roms are going to be different for everybody, depending on how they use it and what they do with it. I've only tweaked jokersax's build to fix the mms issue, as his fix doesn't help. my fix helps ME, but considering the fact that jokersax's fix works for plenty of others, that obviously points out the fact that roms run differently for everybody.
One last thing; who's cm9 build are you talking about? because you mentioned bugs, and jokersax's barely has any. the battery life issue has a solution that can be found at the end of my first post. please, read it.

I will say it.... jokers cm9 roms battery life kick the crap out of stock. It does have some pretty annoying bugs tho.... like everytime you rotate the screen while using the browser it force closes, or the camera that doesn't take great pictures...mainly with the flash. But other than that it does work pretty well.
I did just switch to cm7 and while everything on it seems to work great, the battery life is no where near as good as cm9.
Btw both I have Max CPU at 1000.

Really? For me, the camera's damnnear perfect. huh. But yeah, the rotation isn't great, but I never use rotation. It pisses me off, lol. The only thing atm that makes me mad is that google play won't let me download anything because I'm not on an official android rom. Anyone else have this problem?

But I'll post about this on a different thread, we gotta stay on topic. Thanks for trying to help me!
I flashed back last night and tried taking pictures with dark light.... I found if I use the button on the screen instead of the button on the side of the phone it takes much better pictures. All in all I can't wait till this Rome gets the bugs worked out.... but to be on topic it is a pretty good daily rom.

I will only comment on a few items because we could go about this all day with really no positive outcome and the thread will be hijacked.
First, I am not doing anything wrong. This is not my first rodeo. Yes, I know about the battery "conditioning" steps at the end of your post. This is part of flashing 101. With what I am running on my phone it just wasn't the life I needed it to be.
With that said I agree with you on CM9 exceeding expectations. Great rom but OP was looking for a stable rom and beta versions have bugs.
We can agree to disagree and put it to rest?

So im using MIUI Galnet ICS with Siyah kernel, and i completely love almost everything about this rom, but i say almost because my battery life is not so good i get like 13 hours with pretty low use.
So my question is:
What rom has the best battery life, fairly smooth and stable (battery life at highest priority)? What would be the best kernel (battery wise) to use with this ROM?
Another question kinda not on topic but anyways;
If my phone fell a few times (sometimes on side, sometimes on screen sometimes on back)(with screen protector and back cover) can any of the internal components get damaged? cuz sometimes the phone gets minor freezes.
P.S.
I have been told CheckromRevolution 5.5 is probably one of the best roms battery wise, the thing is there is CheckRomRevolution HD 3.1.x now
So which CheckRom ROM has best battery life?
The best ROM for battery life is the one which is so bad, it makes you not want to use the phone.
Currently using Simple and Clean with Speedmod. Pretty good, but it's just my first discharge cycle so I can't judge yet, but I definitely see some improvements from Litening. CheckROM and Sensation 1.9 also seems decent. Cognition as well.

balls broken...
This will depend on so many variables, network, location, Modem, ROM, Kernel, user installs of software, wake locks, bad signal.......
Hence the only way to find is via flashing bedding testing....
As you will notice users can have same setup but very different outcomes..
Using CWM backup you can always revert to stable setup.

I'm currently running BAMF Forever 1.10, which I was loving for the incredible bump to my battery life and the fact that everything runs solid on it, no matter what. However, I am not loving the speed of this thing. I let an iphone user use my phone, and she kept thinking it was broken because it was responding so slowly.
I was running cm7 before, which was nice and quick. Unfortunately it had horrible battery life. Can anyone recommend a rom that might be a better balance between speed, battery life, and stability. I'd love to try them all, but alas, there are only so many hours in a week.
I'm running Thunderstick Bareback. It's stable and battery life is very good.
It's a no Sense ROM and I've been converted to prefer ROMS w/o Sense by it.
I have to say Liquid Smooth 3.2
It's given me the best battery life, best stability, above average speed and superb customization.
I know others have had myriad bugs pop up and stability issues, but for whatever reason, everything on my phone has been clockwork, regardless of what launcher/widgets I use.
Give it a try why not, with a nandroid back up, what do you have to lose?
I have been using SkyRaider Zeus 1.3 Bolt since I got the Thunderbolt back on Black Friday 2011; I have tried every ROM and it is my Personal Favorite.
+1 for Liquid Smooth (Liquid Gingerbread) 3.2
I'm running the LeanKernel 6.1.0 on battery saver mode and it's still much faster than the iPhone and battery is easy 18 hours or more.

Oh! Awesome!
I just then need to find a way to use Liquid in my Yaris lol
I had to start this thread up because I am considering either one of these roms as my stable daily.
In my week of research after owning my Rezound, these are the best De-Sensed ICS roms out there.
I wanna know though, what are the main differences betweeen Slim Rom and Clean Rom DE?
I cant really see a difference accept, that I prefer the ICS theme on SlimRom as it takes the rom to almost AOSP in appearance.
I want something that is super fast, Clean and looks the most AOSP as possible.
It also has to be stable.
Please advise
only primary difference is slimrom has the most updated leak but cleanrom de is probably the most aosp in appearance
SlimROM ran smoother for me when I ran it.
Also consider CleanROM won't probably be updated any longer as Scott is gone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Scott did say he'll come update when official ICS comes out...not sure if that's still the case or not.
I think Scott has a Google Nexus now so I don't know if he'll take time to rebase his CleanRom when ICS is released.

Cleanrom de. It has more options and is smoother and more AOSP like
I would also recommend tonked Rom. It's not here. He put it up on the bamf site. I'm running it now and It's beyond smooth. I think it was right at 300mb size wise so it's pretty slimmed down

IMO, Slim Rom is the best rom out right now, that is still being maintained. By far. I get shockingly great battery life with this rom in comparison to any other rom I've ran for this phone. And it has pilots themes which are always incredible. Also, tether will work on any rooted rom as long as its setup properly. But it's easy enough to flash roms so give them both a try for a few days and see which one you prefer.

What kind of batter life are we talking here with how much usage? Ive been on a quest for better battery life and I've yet to find a ROM that is satisfactory.
I was running Tonked and liked it, but got a bit of flashitis and am running Nils business right now. I don't think I will keep it for too long as the battery life isnt any better, maybe worse but too soon to tell, and I don't think I like sense very much.

Well as I don't have exact figures for you I can tell you that the battery drain while screen is off is almost non-existent. On all of my previous ROMS I ran I would always turn off LTE unless I was going to be downloading something so I could save on battery life. WIth this rom I have LTE on 100% of the time and have far better battery life than I did when 3G was enabled on other roms. Also, when I play temple run the battery drain is almost cut in half and possibly even more compared to other roms. I use my phone constantly throughout the day and would always have my phone charging at my desk at work, but with slim rom I can easily last the whole day until I go to bed with heavy use and off the charger. I have no idea why that rom is so much better for me, but it is. Huge difference from any other rom.
I think slim rom is under 240MB...all of the normal sense stuff is ripped out and it runs amazingly. How hard is it to create a backup and flash a new rom? Just give it a try.

Oh its not at all and I will. I was just curious. I'm sure you've seen plenty of people, like I have, that say they get amazing battery life and then they post a screenshot and you see the screens never on or something like that.
I'm backing up right now as I was getting pretty terrible battery life from the Sense Rom I was running. Maybe it was still settling but its full day 2 on the ROM and no improvement, for me that's not worth waiting to see what little improvement I may get from it.
I've been reading up a lot about custom ROMs, and more often than not CM9 always gets a mention. I'm tempted to flash it but just wanting to know is it really worth it? Does it have major improvements on battery and performance, and what are the main things that make it so much better than the stock ROM?
Also is it easy to revert back to the stock? I've already got my phone rooted with CF-Root, is that the clockworkmod recovery I've read about, and if so can I just go ahead with making a backup and flashing with CM9?
Any help/info would be appreciated.

Its users choice read what does not work first .
CF root is not Clockwork Recovery but it probably has CWM recovery incorporated .
CWM manager in apps and boot to recovery should show CWM options .

CM9 is experimental and still has several flaws and issues.
I'd not recommend it for everyday usage if you're not a developer or like living on the edge.
Plus, 3G battery life is terrible since CM9 has no Fast Dormancy. Within ~5 hours the battery was always dead on me.
Samsung-based Roms make it more than 24 hours in contrast.
It will of course get better when the ROM is properly fixed and all features integrated. It always does =)

a lot of the battery issues are due to not resetting battery stats. You fully charge the phone, clear the stats, then charge it again I think? Search there are instructions.
I've got CM9 on an Atrix which isn't even a supported device and it's totally daily usable. The only things I lose which are only b'cause it's an atrix are:
Fingerprint reader
Webtop
video camera
Check out what works and doesn't with CM9 for your phone and decide. I like it a lot, it's TOTALLY stripped though, like no google aps (you can install them as a package)... There are lots of weird intricacies to it but it's cool as hell IMO

At least the build for Atrix is not pre-alpha EXPERIMENTAL =)
It takes some time for the developers to get it right on the S3. I've never said CM9 itself had issues, it's the combination of CM9+ i9300 that needs some serious work.
I have or manage a couple of CM9-flashed devices (from Galaxy S1 over Galaxy S2 to Motorola Xoom) so I know how awesome the Rom is =)
Cheers for all the replys.
Are there any other custom ROMs worth looking at? I've heard CM9 is the most popular but if it's not quite usable daily yet I might give something else a try.
CM9 is currently very usable. I have no problems whatsoever. It has many advantages to stock ROM like no low free memory problem, no launcher redraws and no lags. The only real disadvantage is that the camera app sucks compared to stock.
It must like your phone better.
Kept turning off the modem for no reason, sometimes restart was necessary to connect.
It also has no fd as already described, so many people will notice a huge drain in 3g.
Btw you can easily get rid of memory issues by freezing/removin, all the apps you do not need but which are always running.

I have already directed you to the only alternate kernel that is going to work with Padawan. I am definitely no developer, but it would take a lot of effort just to extract those little options, not to mention the permission of the developer, and it would then most likely have to be installed into another kernel that could be compatible with Padawan.
I am not sure what it is that you are so intent on having those options for, I am sure you have your reasons. not sure that anything else is going to give you better battery life on a 4.1.2 rom. it seems with the progression from 4.0 through 4.4, the battery life is going to diminish a bit with every evolvement.
can I suggest maybe you try Black Jelly. the different rom may provide you that option. if not, Blownfuse has an alternate kernel list in that OP which was designed specifically for that rom.
good luck

My friend, its your phone. Out side of the governer and scheduler, battery life is the only feature you are bringing up. What kind of user are you?

Various roms are going to provide various results. And no 2 devices are going to react the same. I know, folks have said this before, so sorry to repeat.
For what is may be worth, here is my rundown
4.O ICS ... most stable but may be lacking in some features
4.1.2 JB ... touchwiz based, the most stable JB your going to get
4.2.1 JB ... more features evolving into, but most unstable. Some able to control with alternate kernel. Battery life dwindling.
4.3 JB ... increased smoothness and improved stability. Still able to control with an alternate kernel to a certain extent. To me it started to become like medication. The phone seemed to build up a tolerance and stability would decrease. Decreased battery life.
4.4 KK .... did not have a problem with stability, but battery life has really suffered as is the complaint of many.
No rom is going to be 100% perfect. It is more of what can you tolerate for an inadequacy.
I love my music, I FB quite often, I'm on XDA several time a day and I have been catching a few minutes of Youtube.
My phone ran ORGASMIC on Padawan and I did enjoy Hellybean also. To me, battery is like gasoline, nobody is getting any better than me. Everybody pays the same at the pump. You can always get a Ravpower battery 2700 from Amazon for $8 and many swear it increase battery life immensely.
Wow, did I go on and on or what?
So what kind of user are you?

I would just take a few for a test drive then. if you had a problem with Padawan and random reboots, then my guess is you either had a bad download or your not flashing clean. a dirty flash is going to leave some straggling files from previous rom which are most likely going to conflict.
but try some different roms and let them settle. give them a couple days. if its not going to work for you, try the next.
one rom just wouldn't run on my phone and that was Carbon Rom. I tried several different versions, with and without alternate kernels. always clean. many swear by it and love it, that's why I kept trying it, but it just did not like my phone. no biggie, plenty to choose from.
don't take this the wrong way, but if you the only one suffering from a side effect, than it is most likely user error. there are many glitches throughout all roms and they are usually well documented in that thread.
refer back to my last post in Padawan. again, my flashing process may be overkill, but you cant get much cleaner than that
if a battery gets me through the day, I am good

Hey man. Just giving you an update. It turns out I had a bad battery. The middle of the battery was enlarging, I have no idea why. I got a new one and everything's working much better now. Have you heard of anything like that before?

Very common at about the 10 to 12 month mark. Battery starts to swell. You can get stronger battery for $8 on amazon.
Glad everything is working better, still want to stay clean though.
