[Q] ROM with stability, speed, AND battery life - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently running BAMF Forever 1.10, which I was loving for the incredible bump to my battery life and the fact that everything runs solid on it, no matter what. However, I am not loving the speed of this thing. I let an iphone user use my phone, and she kept thinking it was broken because it was responding so slowly.
I was running cm7 before, which was nice and quick. Unfortunately it had horrible battery life. Can anyone recommend a rom that might be a better balance between speed, battery life, and stability. I'd love to try them all, but alas, there are only so many hours in a week.

I'm running Thunderstick Bareback. It's stable and battery life is very good.
It's a no Sense ROM and I've been converted to prefer ROMS w/o Sense by it.

I have to say Liquid Smooth 3.2
It's given me the best battery life, best stability, above average speed and superb customization.
I know others have had myriad bugs pop up and stability issues, but for whatever reason, everything on my phone has been clockwork, regardless of what launcher/widgets I use.
Give it a try why not, with a nandroid back up, what do you have to lose?

I have been using SkyRaider Zeus 1.3 Bolt since I got the Thunderbolt back on Black Friday 2011; I have tried every ROM and it is my Personal Favorite.

+1 for Liquid Smooth (Liquid Gingerbread) 3.2
I'm running the LeanKernel 6.1.0 on battery saver mode and it's still much faster than the iPhone and battery is easy 18 hours or more.

+1 on liquid, but can't seem to get Gmail working

Flickering and unable to access it? Known problem on the latest gmail update. Thought it was the rom I was on till I flashed a couple others and got the same thing, and I looked it up. Android Central had a post up and google let out an official statement saying theyll fix it soon

Bamf Sense 3.0 RC2 BATTERY WOES

I have Bamf Sense 3.0 RC2 with the stock kernal it came with. WORKS GREAT but the battery life on RC1 is HORRIBLE. it drains 24/7 is it the kernal or radio or rom that causing it to suck. It also charges Very slow.

It could be a combination of things, but more than likely, not the ROM itself. Imo came out with his latest GB kernel, which corrects the slow charging issue. You can also try using the speedtweak script to set on 'battsaver' which will underclock and not overclock to save battery.
Of course, there are the standard settings such as screen brightness and sync settings that also affect battery life. 4G is a tremendous battery hog even on the best ROM. Try to stay on Wi-Fi or if not downloading, 3G.
Here is the link to the latest kernel by Imo....download 1) lean test from the GB sense downloads section.

thanks man im going to try the lean kernal.
I noticed with 3.0 sense bamf that
1. going in and out of calls is laggy
2. on call (most other roms too) battery drians 1-2% every minute

i had the same problem with battery life on this rom. i loved the look and the feel of it but 5 hours wasnt working for me. i did a lot of tweaks with wifi only, 3g only, brightness and auto sync, but still nothing changed. I switched over to gingerth3ory v4.2 last night charged to 100% with a battery calibration and running on 14 hours. with all the roms that i have flashed my phone tends to stay the same as far as setting.
It really seems as if you just have to use whatever runs best on your phone. I've heard nothing but people loving battery life on AOSP alpha ROMs so far and when I load them my battery sucks down like a champ. On the BAMF Stripped V1.8 my battery is pretty damn good. I'd just try out whatever ROM you like and see what has the best results for battery life on YOUR device.
You should try Bamf Sense 3.0 RC3 and run imo's kernel. might squeeze out more batterylife
Getting 40+ hours on BAMF 3 here
How does someone get 40 hours on their phone!? even when my phone is sitting on the couch next to me on idle I'm still only getting 14-16hrs AT MOST. Whats your tricks? extended battery?? I refuse to throw that brick on the back of my phone!

It really isn't that big at all. I felt the same way when it came out and I saw pictures of others with it on. But when you actually get it, its isn't bad at all, and I have grown to like it more because it helps when holding the phone in landscape view so much more. Plus the fact of knowing I can do whatever I want with my phone, all day, and make it through with no problem. This is also being OC'd to 1.6 24/7

I couldn't of said it better myself. The extended battery really isn't that bad. And knowing I can do w/e I want all day and make it home is more than worth the cost and added size!

Which ROM are you currently running? Which have you tried?

Just a thread to see what the majority of people are choosing to run right now and which you have tested as well. This is NOT intended to be any type of a bashing thread, just please stick to what you've tested and what you've chosen to currently use.
As for myself, I'm running UnNamed from gtg and have been for a bit now. I've removed a few additional pieces of software that I didn't want and modified the battery icon but other than that, it's pretty much as is.
I've tested and have a backup of CM 7 and I'm planning to test Cognition next...
I am running UnNamed, I had a circle battery mod, but flashed the full update and have stuck with it as-is. I ran Cognition with no issues or complaints, but wanted the extended power menu.

I'm running Cognition as of yesterday. For a few days before that I was running a stock + root ROM.
I must say, my battery lasts sooooooo much longer since installing Cognition compared to Stock. I just now hit 90% and it's been off the charger (getting regular use: some idle, some web browsing, some pp installs) for about 6 hours now.
I love it.

I'm on Cognition and haven't tried others, yet. It works and as ROMs have appeared, I've pulled what I wanted from them. I get great battery life (3 hours of display time, but lately it's been increasing - yesterday I got 4 and today I'm on pace for over 5 hours of display ). I'm really interested in CM7. I hadn't tried it yet because I'm not convinced that it's bug free (which is important for me). What did you think of it?
I'm getting such poor battery life still, even after rooting and removing data hogs (AP Mobile, etc.), running BBS and CPUSpy to monitor, and turning off unnecessary sync. I'm thinking about moving to Cognition, but I kinda like Touchwiz's interface and the safety of running stock.

I liked CM7. I probably didn't give it enough time to make an accurate assessment of it as I liked the idea of trying UnNamed simply because I like the stock build as it is... minus the garbage bloatware and wanted the extended power menu. I'd highly recommend giving CM7 a shot though. I simply get each rom running and then do a full nandroid backup in case I want to go back in the future - barring any major improvements of course in which case I'll start out fresh.

I have to say that I was never much of a believer in Juice Defender but between running that program and doing a battery calibration with the app, BatteryCalibration, my battery life has increased quite a bit. I've still got Gmail auto syncing but I have turned off 'Back up my data' in Privacy and keep GPS off until I need it. Everything else is running as is. Oh and no Facebook or Words with Friends. I login to Facebook via Dolphin HD when I have to check it on the go.
Running UnNamed 1.0.3 and really like it. Clean, snappy and excellent battery life (yes, better than stock rom).

+1 for UnNamed.... love that rom!
Ive been on cog beta 4 for a while and it is perfect. Picked up DD exp kernal a few days ago and its still perfect. Perfect combo i guess. Battery life is amazing. After 15 hour days i am always getting 4 hours of screen on time along with playing music thoughout the day and few calls and messages data and sync always on.
I have yet to have any problems and gonna make this my offical "go back to, stable rom" when others start to drive me nuts. I would like to just stay on this rom and call it good cause its perfect but that never happens.

Wow.... That sounds impressive. I may need to give that rom a whir then.

Any recent roms that are fully stable?

Seems that every ROM I look at in here has a bunch of issues. I'm coming over from the OG Evo, and know nothing about photon's development- although I get the gist its an underappreciated device. Just looking for something to make it worth rooting the photon, which is a great phone imo.

have you tried CM9? sure theres a few bugs but its my daily. otherwise i hear that miui is turning out pretty good but i havnt flashed it myself for a few builds. you could always try cm7 or rokko also.
CM7 and CM9 are the best. Use both of them, CM7 is more stable and all works, but CM9 is very smooths and awesome!

As quick as it is to root the Photon I would do it just for the ability to use root apps. Then, try some of the custom locked roms available before you unlock. CM9 is a great rom but still a beta and has issues such as camera, signal, battery, etc. which is to be expected.
I still prefer the stock rom just because of full functionality, battery life, and signal quality but there are many good custom roms based off stock builds (which I have not tried) that might work well for you.
Running CM7 here and am happy with that as my daily driver. Not brave enough to try CM9 but that's just my personal preference/bias. Joker's non CM9 roms & Lokifish Marz's roms are also good choices.
Three great roms:
-CM7 (KANG)
-ROCKO 3.0 (NOT 3.5)
-Imperium Initiative 1.04
As for which is better... It's a tossup. CM7 last longer, but ROCKO feels more fluid and user friendly. CM7 is more technical...
CM9 is very impressive but it is a beta.

I'd like to quickly point out that Jokersax's CyanogenMod 9 beta is honestly pretty stable. The camera, MMS, signal, and battery life is very much exceeding my expectations, considering this is a rom that is labelled as a beta.
I'd also like to state my opinions towards the OP's original question: In order of stability, here is what I would recommend.
1-Stock. (obviously).
2-HomeBase
3-CyanogenMod 7.2
4-RockoRom 3.0 (3.5 is good as well, but based on experience I recommend 3.0)
5-Jokersax's CyanogenMod 9, link is in the beginning of my post.
6-Imperium Initiative
Finally, 7-[email protected]/[email protected]
The rom I use the most is Jokersax's CyanogenMod 9. It's a very good rom.
Quickly-- One last thing. If you DO flash a rom, please please please PLEASE do not complain about the battery life until you do these steps:
~Let your battery drain to 0%
~Charge your battery to 100%
~Wipe battery stats via the advanced menu in a custom recovery(recommended), or an application
~Drain battery to 0%, then charge to 100%.
Then you can complain about the battery life... if it's bad, that is. Lol.

I was comparing CM9 to stock and there is no way CM9 has better battery than stock. Not even close. In my experience with running CM roms on multiple devices they all seem to drain the battery more I would assume due to the kernels used. I know this doesn't really have anything to do with stability but relates to the overall feel of the OP question I think which is why I mentioned it.
With that said roms are going to run different for each user especially with a beta build.

I don't quite remember saying that the battery life was better than stock... But surely sir, you must be doing something wrong. I have 2 photons running cm9, one is activated and one is not, the one that is activated has the minimum at 216 mhz and the max at 1300 mhz, and it's usual cpu is going at 800mhz-ish. the one that is not activated is clocked to the max at 1300mhz constantly, min is 1300 and max is obviously 1300. they both run roughly the same amount of time before dying, usually 7/8hrs. with stock, not rooted, my batter lasts anywhere from 8-9hrs being heavily used.
I never said that the battery life was better than stock on cm9, i said it was EXCEEDING MY EXPECTATIONS FOR A BETA. Sir, you honestly should double check the post of which you're criticizing before you make such an accusation.
And of course roms are going to be different for everybody, depending on how they use it and what they do with it. I've only tweaked jokersax's build to fix the mms issue, as his fix doesn't help. my fix helps ME, but considering the fact that jokersax's fix works for plenty of others, that obviously points out the fact that roms run differently for everybody.
One last thing; who's cm9 build are you talking about? because you mentioned bugs, and jokersax's barely has any. the battery life issue has a solution that can be found at the end of my first post. please, read it.

I will say it.... jokers cm9 roms battery life kick the crap out of stock. It does have some pretty annoying bugs tho.... like everytime you rotate the screen while using the browser it force closes, or the camera that doesn't take great pictures...mainly with the flash. But other than that it does work pretty well.
I did just switch to cm7 and while everything on it seems to work great, the battery life is no where near as good as cm9.
Btw both I have Max CPU at 1000.

But I'll post about this on a different thread, we gotta stay on topic. Thanks for trying to help me!

All in all I can't wait till this Rome gets the bugs worked out.... but to be on topic it is a pretty good daily rom.

I will only comment on a few items because we could go about this all day with really no positive outcome and the thread will be hijacked.
First, I am not doing anything wrong. This is not my first rodeo. Yes, I know about the battery "conditioning" steps at the end of your post. This is part of flashing 101. With what I am running on my phone it just wasn't the life I needed it to be.
With that said I agree with you on CM9 exceeding expectations. Great rom but OP was looking for a stable rom and beta versions have bugs.
We can agree to disagree and put it to rest?

CleanRom DE Vs SlimRom, Which is better/More Stable?

I had to start this thread up because I am considering either one of these roms as my stable daily.
In my week of research after owning my Rezound, these are the best De-Sensed ICS roms out there.
I wanna know though, what are the main differences betweeen Slim Rom and Clean Rom DE?
I cant really see a difference accept, that I prefer the ICS theme on SlimRom as it takes the rom to almost AOSP in appearance.
I want something that is super fast, Clean and looks the most AOSP as possible.
It also has to be stable.
Please advise
only primary difference is slimrom has the most updated leak but cleanrom de is probably the most aosp in appearance
SlimROM ran smoother for me when I ran it.
Also consider CleanROM won't probably be updated any longer as Scott is gone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Scott did say he'll come update when official ICS comes out...not sure if that's still the case or not.
I think Scott has a Google Nexus now so I don't know if he'll take time to rebase his CleanRom when ICS is released.

Cleanrom de. It has more options and is smoother and more AOSP like
I would also recommend tonked Rom. It's not here. He put it up on the bamf site. I'm running it now and It's beyond smooth. I think it was right at 300mb size wise so it's pretty slimmed down

IMO, Slim Rom is the best rom out right now, that is still being maintained. By far. I get shockingly great battery life with this rom in comparison to any other rom I've ran for this phone. And it has pilots themes which are always incredible. Also, tether will work on any rooted rom as long as its setup properly. But it's easy enough to flash roms so give them both a try for a few days and see which one you prefer.

But it's easy enough to flash roms so give them both a try for a few days and see which one you prefer.

What kind of batter life are we talking here with how much usage? Ive been on a quest for better battery life and I've yet to find a ROM that is satisfactory.
I was running Tonked and liked it, but got a bit of flashitis and am running Nils business right now. I don't think I will keep it for too long as the battery life isnt any better, maybe worse but too soon to tell, and I don't think I like sense very much.

Well as I don't have exact figures for you I can tell you that the battery drain while screen is off is almost non-existent. On all of my previous ROMS I ran I would always turn off LTE unless I was going to be downloading something so I could save on battery life. WIth this rom I have LTE on 100% of the time and have far better battery life than I did when 3G was enabled on other roms. Also, when I play temple run the battery drain is almost cut in half and possibly even more compared to other roms. I use my phone constantly throughout the day and would always have my phone charging at my desk at work, but with slim rom I can easily last the whole day until I go to bed with heavy use and off the charger. I have no idea why that rom is so much better for me, but it is. Huge difference from any other rom.
I think slim rom is under 240MB...all of the normal sense stuff is ripped out and it runs amazingly. How hard is it to create a backup and flash a new rom? Just give it a try.

Oh its not at all and I will. I was just curious. I'm sure you've seen plenty of people, like I have, that say they get amazing battery life and then they post a screenshot and you see the screens never on or something like that.
I'm backing up right now as I was getting pretty terrible battery life from the Sense Rom I was running. Maybe it was still settling but its full day 2 on the ROM and no improvement, for me that's not worth waiting to see what little improvement I may get from it.

Best Jelly Bean ROM

Hello alls!
I am currently running the Stock w/Goodies 1.78 and it is just smooth as smooth can be. I'm really anxious to try the cm10 or the AOSP/AOKP but am hesitant because I use this phone for work and I don't have a ton of downtime where I can play with the roms like I can on my personal TBolt. Which current JB leaked ROM has been the best in your experience, and is it worth the switch (in terms of smoothness and things actually working)? I appreciate your time!

i am using cm 10. i use my phone m-f as a gps device in a windshield holder 8hrs plus a day. cm has been real smooth for me.
I've been using cm10 for 3 weeks. Its great.
If you are using your phone for business,I might hold off and give it more time depending on how important the device is to your business.
Could always nandroid and try it out.
Have u noticed any stupid FC's or things not working?

Most "normal" things are working fine. Phone will FC on boot until it finds a signal
Gotta say CM10 really is a great, even with the few problems I had on the first nightlies. I flashed the most recent today and for the first time since I bought my LTE it is cool to the touch and the phantom battery drain that carried over for a few nightlies is gone. The only gripe I've had is the gps and this is really just knit-picking but on stock sense I had a lock with in 3 meters nearly every time and on cm10 its 8 but like I said, nit-picking. Dead Trigger runs reasonably well with modified xml to enable the so called Tegra 3 exclusives. Theres a pretty anoying graphical glitch that is persistent in the game but if you go to developer options and turn off hardware overlay it goes away at the slight expense of performance but its negligible lag, all in all my favorite rom so far
Sounds pretty convincing. No words from the AOSP/AOKP usrs?

I think most are using Cm
AOKP/PA are based on CM, so the same stuff will be working/nonworking
Deck's CM10 is awesome and very smooth. For me it was a daily driver for a week up to 8/29 build with ZERO crashes, but I had problems with data connection switching between wi-fi, 3g and 4g, voice always worked. It took up to 30 minutes or a reboot to get the data connection back again with voice always working. I can't wait to flash the 9/4 release and see if that problem has been fixed as I was getting 17+ hours with 4-5 hours of screen on and lots of calls.
I will never understand how on earth some of you manage to get such sick battery life

I get good battery life because I'm always connected to Wi-Fi on campus. Wi-Fi uses a lot less power than 3G or LTE do.
I was able to pull a little over a full day with 3 hours of screen on time, which included an hour of 720p video streaming, and I still had 25-30% left.
I've been using CM10 since I got the phone on Saturday. Have to say it is great. CM10 has only had official nightlies for about a week now, but I have yet to find something that doesn't work as expected. Definitely a daily driver. Deck and toastcfh have really outdone themselves this time
It also helps battery life when you have good signal strength for 3g/LTE use. Or using Airplane mode instead.
I have little to no signal almost everywhere I go in Iowa, so my battery lasts maybe a day with no usage; a lot less if I decide to call people or surf the net.
Been using CM10 nightlies for a few days now; I use my phone both for personal and my firm exchange account. Default CM10 email.apk fixes the annoying text-size issue from stock. No unusual FCs. Smooth performance, good battery life. Google now is interesting, but still "learning" me.
Minor issues I have experienced, but not everyone else has:
-Auto-brightness doesn't work
-Phone calls seem to use more battery than stock, although that's just a hunch
-No LTE for me (even after clean flashing the most recent nightly)
-Phone pin-locks itself every time i hit the power button, even though i unchecked the "power button immediately locks" option.
I installed it and set it up over the course of about 2 hours one night. Had to re-install all the apps because I couldn't use Titanium pre-rooting. I think it's worthwhile.
+1 on CM 10, It has been fantastic! I seem to be getting better battery life than stock. definitely less charging.
So what's the difference between Paranoid Android and CM10? Isn't it just CM10 with tweaks?
I have also tried CM10 and I LOVED it. Super smooth, Jelly Bean is awesome to use. But for some reason my GPS would not work, nor would the video recording, and I had issues with using the speakerphone during calls. Those issues were enough to force me to go back to Sense. I hadn't heard of people having GPS issues, which I thought was odd, since it worked on other ROMs.
After I get my phone fixed, or get a new one, I'm guna have to try it again. Jelly Bean is really awesome.

Have other people seen this with the current cm10 build? I use video and speakerphone a lot.
I must thank all of you for input. I didnt expect we`d get this much feedback.

I have had no issues with speakerphone (use it fairly regularly), GPS, or video (have taken a few HD vids already) with the last three (9/2, 9/4, 9/5) builds of CM10.
