Hi. I use a sgs2 i9100, wondering if galaxy note is worth it. I need bigger screen for big thumbs /keyboard. Or is HTC one X the better? No amoled, smaller battery and screen, but higher screen DPI count.
The Note cost around 900usd
Please let me know what you think if you have a g. Note and had a sgs2

why dont you go see / try on hand.... for me its dam big, but by reviews its one of the most applauded device. i know many people who used it now have hard time going back to smalller screens.
Go for the One x or wait for s3.
Note is similar hardware to s2 aside from screen and higher processor speed but is huge. Seriously have you seen it? If screen size is your primary objective then you won't go wrong but ..
Depends on resolution vs bigger screen too. You get more screen real estate on an HD screen which neither the s2 or note have

I liked the note. Size isnt really a problem for me. The biggest negative fact was that the pen doesnt work on the capacitive keys. If size and the s-pen are a big necessity for you, id say go for it. Personally, I didnt find it worth it compared to the SGS2.
If you have big hands get note...but you gona look vierd when youll talk with it on the streets

A workmate here has a Note and its a really nice phone. As everyone else mentioned, it seems quite large though but anyone I know who has one loves that feature. To me, its just a larger version of the SGS2 with a slightly faster processor with an S-Pen.
Depending on what you're looking for and your timeles, we are currently into that cusp of the quad core releases so you could always wait for HTC One or possibly SGS2.

yeh, I should, as these days one can try the phones (remember back in the day when all you could touch was a dummy phone?). But no need to. I know the size and weight. Actually I had a HTC Desire HD, it was around same weight. It is about the max weight, it was one of the many reasons i dumped the DHD and went to SGS2 (protruding camera lens was as well)

Sure I've seen it. Haven't 'seen' the HTC one X though. Im wondering if 'super amoled' is worse that SGS2's super amoled PLUS. I've <mostly> read the SGN does last longer than SGS2, even though it has 5.3" (+1") screen.
Oh, so hardware is pretty much the same as the SGS2 ? does that then mean:
-headphone/jack audio volume just TOO low ?
- microSD/internalSD/externalSD/memory and those folders like /emmc is all messed up ?
If those problems are on the Galaxy Note, then I might skip it, and look at the HTC One X. Only, I don't like I cannot put a 64gb microsd in it.

Well, that's a kind of shock, the pen doesnt work on the capacitative keys ? On the other hand..those buttons are okay for a big thumb. I had a Nokia 5800, and lost the ridiculous stringy plastic stylus many times. (typing on its' 3.2" screen w/o stylus was a fight).
I'm not sure waiting is always good, it means more 'research' on more/newer models as usual, and yet more considerations..and waiting. At the moment I have no time, but by summer, yes, that would be great. So I can hope for a price drop on SGN . Wonder if there's gonna be some sort of Galaxy Note 2 ?
I also use phone (SGS2) for viweing boks, pdf's, and more, so a rise in DPI screen resolution would be splendid. The other choice I am comtemplating is to get a cheap netbook, but I'm warned that they are not up for the thing I do. (yet the SGS2 does it) Neither is it time to buy a notebook/tab for me right now. As the fiance has 3 damn notebooks, i'd like to stick with a PC and a phone, and skip any net/notebook/tab. Those are much more than 178 grams
thanks for the advice, If anyone can comment more on the particular display, super amoled vs super amoled plus, or simpler said SGN vs SGS2 displays.
does the huge 5.3" comsume battery like crazy, is a 2500mah battery inferior for that big semi-tablet phone?
is a step back from super amoled plus to super amoled hd bad ? they are both pentile matrix displays ?
The SGN does have 'HD' as in half-HD display (1280*800 = 720p), and it records full-HD. Correct ?

I really wanna get a galaxy nexus but i'm guessing it would cost somewhere between 700-800 $ and that's out of my budget, i live in venezuela and the dollar is just too expensive , the actual cost would translate to 1400 $ , rigth now the galaxy s II is 550 $ unlocked in amazon, and i really wanna get it i can afford it ( again the real cost for me would be 800 $ ouch) , does anyone remember how long did it took for the original galaxy s to drop in price after the galaxy s ii was out?
A friend is going to the us this week so i wouldnt have to pay for the shipment to my country if she buys it for me, the shipment overseas costs like 40 $ , what do you guys think should i buy it now or wait till the nexus out is out?
Actually the nexus is gonna cost $800+ from retail stores. More than likely the sgs 2 will get a price drop. Personally i don't see any reason to get the nexus. ICS? Well samsung will release that for the sgs 2 soon enough. 720p screen? I don't need that much pixels anyways, and web browsing could hurt my eyes. Other than that the processor is worse than ours, the camera is worse, no sd card slot. Mhm, not much of an upgrade now is it?

I want the galaxy nexus mainly for the 720 screen, icons and fonts in galaxy s ii are WAY bigger than i'd like , possibly because of the low pixel density , also the non existant capacitive buttons sound real nice
Well if you do really want that 720p screen then by all means go ahead. However paying $800 just for a better screen isn't a very logical choice.

The galaxy s screen used pentile and it was neat, i dont think anyone will notice the pentile on the galaxy nexus tough, with that much resolution it would be nearly impossible to notice

You're right tought 220-250 extra $ for a better screen is outrageous :/
Thinking about this too.
SGS2 seems to be a better choice especially if it will cost much less. One major issue for me is the possible obsolescence of phones with hardware buttons. Hmmm
Do you think that the s2 is still the best and fastest smartphone in the market ? Its faster than the iphone 4s and anything that has came out so far including snapdragon gs2s and will probably be faster than the galaxy nexus with the ti omap processor in it i think it is still the king what about you ? And it will get better still with the ics update
yes...............
Ofcourse..untill prime launches..it wl remain d king..

I'd absolutely agree with that. And by the way... There WILL be better phones in the future, but I think the SGS II is an amazing device and I don't see any phone overtaking the SGS II at the moment.
As you said, the new Nexus is... err... let's say it's "okay". To me, the Galaxy Nexus is more a platform to show the possibilities of Ice cream sandwich than anything else...
Performance wise yes, but it does have its own faults too.
Well about the nexus acorrding to this artical its processor is slower than the s2 but well have to wait and see i dont think it will beat the exynos and mali 400 in speed

STILL no other phone can match the SGSII so yes it still reigns supreme
I believe the Galaxy Nexus to be a slightly superior phone (mainly due to 720p and ICS). That being said, the GSII has had an amazingly long run of dominance for the majority of this year. And in that time, the developer community has had a chance to grow by leaps and bounds.
The Galaxy Nexus may be a superior phone on paper, but until their developer community becomes as robust as that of the GSII, we're still looking really good for the rest of this year.
Hey dose anyone know if the s2 is faster than the new moto razr because i think that is the same cpu as the nexus
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
SGSII will be King at 4.3" for a while. Kudos for not being shaped like a boomerang as well.
For me its a yes and a no.
The SGS2 GPU is no match for the iPhone 4S, unless you overclock the Mali it somewhat close to the SGX543. But the iPhone 4S CPU is clocked at 700mhz whereas the S2 1.2Ghz.
The galaxy nexus is no match for the sgs2 (exynos). The only thing it has is 720p screen which to me, is useless on a screen that fits in my hand. Other than the screen I cant find one thing better.
Yeah the iphone 4s might have a slightly better gpu but the s2 is still a bit faster than it plus once ics comes out it will get even faster

Famous last words. We don't know this to be a fact.
I can not understand those people who always mess with display size, who in the right mind would carry 4,7" phone !! This 4,3" is too big, I really hope that Samsung will make Galaxy S 3 with 4" display and 720p resolution, that is the perfect measure for mobile phone, that Galaxy Nexus is great but WAAAY too big. Phone should not be bigger than 4" and after that they should make tablets.
Just my 2 cents on the Galaxy Nexus
Just take into consideration that the Galaxy nexus will not have hard buttons thus no need for that space in the bottom of our gs2s...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
I agree its a bit too large, though I have small hands thus making it a bit difficult for me to "thumb" the display with one hand without tapping the back button or part of the screen as I reach across the display. HOWEVER, keep this in mind. Its much easier to make a high resolution display at a larger size than it is to make it in a smaller size. Pixel density is more difficult to increase than is overall resolution, thus why these larger displays are going to be the first to get 720p displays.
I like 4.3, maybe even 4.5" with the right aspect (ie, make the display a bit taller than wider). But more than that will make one handed operation more difficult. That being said, as someone who constantly uses their phone to watch videos, I do like the idea of the larger display. Oh well, that's why we have sim cards right? Pop it into your nexus, watch some tv, then back in the GSII for normal day to day operations. Awesome. I only hope the Galaxy Nexus eventually comes with ATT's LTE bands at some point (I know Verizon has their grubby little exclusivity fingers on the lte version, horrible how much money talks more than consumer demand...)... But if not, still a very nice phone.
I think the fact that I see the comercial about the S II (and it being claimed the smartphone of the year) at least everyday on TV in the Netherlands... is enough to say that the S II is great
Hi guys!
Im getting a new phone in the next couple of days and its between these two.
I just want to know which one of these would you recommend over the other and why
Thanks!
Get the Nexus unless you want:
1. the S II's 8MP cam. Although keep in mind that MP count isn't everything.
2. physical/capacitive buttons.
3. ability to expand storage with microSD card. This is a pretty huge deal to a lot of folks.
4. to keep using Gingerbread over Ice Cream Sandwich.
5. TouchWiz.
Galaxy Nexus, updates direct from google no waiting 6+ months for them.
Thats the thing, other than the screen size and os i havent seen anything that makes the galaxy nexus seem better but im not too phone savvie which is why im not sure
I would say apart from the above mentioned points in favour of the s2, the main reason why I didn't go for the nexus is the weight and size factor... if you don't intend to use your phone for more than mainly phone features then I don't think one needs a 4.65" screen... I always felt 4" was the perfect size, but due to the s2's extremely light weight it can get away with the large size... the nexus is bigger aand heavier which makes sense but still... when it comes to comfort of carrying it in a pocket, I'd rather not have a giant bulge in my pocket... but nonetheless the nexus is sexy as hell... I would love to have that HD display... but size does matter...
I think you should check them both out in the shop before buying... soon enough ICS will be on the S2 as well so... and being on xda you will be getting custom rom updates before samsungs... unless your into stock...

The only thing i like about the nexus is the screen, don't like the design and the lack of memory card slot is unforgivable.
depends on your preference.. if you want gorjess screen and ICS go for nexus..
if you want camera quality and 2011 smartphone of the year go for S2..
but i suggest you to wait for S3.. because it will be a major upgrade over S2 and it comes loaded with more features than the existing galaxy nexus..
its just samsung marketing strategies to keep their phone lineup balanced..
I would wait for the SGS3 as well!!! But would take the SGS2 if I had to choose now!
i had the chance to play with a galaxy nexus yesterday and i wasnt impressed.
it was slower than my sgs2, horrid camera, no sd, screen didnt look better at all, slower cpu and gpu.
I dont want to sound like a hater because i genuinely was considering it but, its simply not a better device.

Dude, I've had both phones and I can tell you without hesitation to get the Galaxy Nexus. It's the best mobile phone I've ever used. Period.
The HD screen is beyond gorgeous.
Nexus if you
like fast update, big screen with High resolution, android beam ??
and don't care about no sd card slot, gaming(cause it have the same GPU as nexus s! and cpu is lower than SGS2)
SGS2 if you
like sd card slot, gaming, lot of mods
and don't care about big screen but low resolution, slow update

I agree with this to a degree. The GS3 will probably have the same screen as the GN and a better processor - but you'll rely on Samsung for the latest updates.
The GN on the other hand will be the first phone to get the most up to date firmware from Google.
For me, I'm worried about extra storage, having the best camera and gaming.
The GS2 (and obviously the GS3) beats the GN on all those counts, which is why I chose the GS2.
SGS2 because the nexus is expensive right now for what it does. Touchwiz is also a nice touch, love it or hate it, it still has the best codec support for videos which is awesome!
soft keys FOR THE LOSE !
Well hello bigger forums I came from the Ace family and I have plans on buying SII. I've heard good rumours about the phone and I've seen lots of interesting roms for it too (plus it's on main forum XD)
My options are HTC One X, GNote or SII and SII is quite leading in my eyes ATM.
Last question is, what is the price of SII in the US WITHOUT the contract?
Thanks for the responses guys, hope to see you soon
S24Lyfe
it depends on whether you're looking for an unlocked phone (being able to use any network) or if you wish to purchase it outright from your current service provider.
Unlocked it's about $500-600, and prices will range depending on your carrier if you want to go for option number 2.
I personally own the S2 and I can honestly say I love this phone.
Took less than 5 minutes to root, plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of custom roms being developed for it, and the hardware itself is just great (it outperforms the iPhone 4s) - I highly recommend it.
Just my two cents.

I'll be going next week so I need to make decisions now.
SGS2 is still a good phone. I had it for just over 10 months and loved it.
Got a HOX now and love that just as much. HOX has the HD screen which is lovely. SLCD2 vs AMOLED. Amoled has better blacks and such but I like the SLCD2 as well. Whites are better and not prone to screen burns.
Hardware wise both are beasts. Dual Core vs Quad Teg 3. DC is still fast enough not enough optimising quad at the moment. With TEG3 you get the range of Nvidia games without the need for Chainfire.
Design wise HOX wins, it's sexy and sleek but the SGS2 is lighter and thinner. Both feel good in the hand.
UI wise, Sense wins for me personally, but TouchWiz is not as bad it has it's own feature set.
If you want the cheaper device go for the SGS2 as price is decent. You'll be happy with any of your choices. The Galaxy range of devices are far easier to root with their unlocked bootloaders if you want to go with custom roms and such and development is very active with HOX it will get active when more devs have it. I'd still rate the Note over the SGS2 as it's a beast, if you can handle the size then definitely get the note.
I agree, the note is excellent.

Hi, today I switched from Sprint to AT&T after waiting for the samsung galaxy SIII to come out on Sprint decided to get the Note on AT&T. I know the hardware on the Note is older but I really needed a bigger screen and only the Note will provide that.
What do you guys think?, did I did the right thing to dump the SIII for the Note???
You are asking this question on Note forum so the answer may be one sided to note. It's all depending on the size of the phone. If you like the big screen, there's no other phone come close to note. Hardware may be a bit older than s3 but with custom Rom and a bit tweaking, it is as fast as s3. I have almost zero lag on mine with flap rom. Most of the s3 softwares are also ported so you can find svoice, smart stay etc that are floating on xda and ready to use.

Thank you. that's what I was talking about. I like and need the big screen due to my sight. was not too impress with the SIII screen wich looks more rectangular than square. I'm punish now with a AT&T prepay phone due to an error the salesman did with my credit card wich he locked up in a transaction so I have to wait until tomorrow that everything is clear and pick up my Note.

Former epic (not touch) addict
Definitely glad to have my note, but now I'm curious what family the note hardware is in - I had assumed it was a galaxy SII class device, where do we fit in?
It is similar to the SII (S2) - the OP is referring to the SIII - that's the S3
To the OP:
Your question is based largely on opinion and not fact. Firstly, welcome. I am also a Sprint defector who left in March so I could get the Note, and hopefully, better service. So far, the service slaughters Sprint ... as does pretty much everything else.
Next, there really isn't a right or wrong answer as to what phone is better, when comparing the GNote and S III. You'll find some people who are spec whores and it doesn't matter how useful/useless a spec or feature is, as long as it's more impressive on paper or when uttered, it will be the say all to end all for them. Other people look at features that may better for THEM, regardless if technically the specs aren't as good.
Some people will like the S III because of its faster processor and better camera features and ICS. Plus, some will choose the S III because of its smaller form factor. Others (like me) will choose the GNote because the large screen is unmatched and the most important thing to me ... ICS isn't a big deal to me, the phone functions wonderfully without it. And I love the S-Pen. Not to mention I find the GNote to be crazy beautiful in design, whereas I find the S III to be relatively ugly. All of these things make the GNote the better phone FOR ME.
With all things considered, I don't think you'll go wrong with either phone. I'm sticking to the GNote series, though. I may have to look for another phone if the GNote 2 really does end up looking like the unattractive S III, and if it's not as wide as the original GNote.
^^^well said!
I also came from Sprint, and am very pleased with the note and the service.
My opinion is...........
Quad/dual core processors are great, but the average user doesn't need more than one core. Unless you're gaming, making music or media editing all you need is a decent amount of RAM. Don't let the smooth taste fool ya =P I like the specs on this phone, but the biggest selling point for me was the screen size.
Like the last guy said you will be pleased with either device Imo, but get the one that fits you.

Okay the Note is too big...but as much as I wanted to go to a smaller phone (the S3) I cannot. I am hopelessly hooked on it's 5.3" of screen and the pen. So be warned...

I read it's supposed to be a 5.5" screen so it will be slightly larger (different aspect ratio).
I read that the device will be slightly smaller than the Note, bit will have a slightly bigger screen. So it seems it will be more space efficient.

Slightly bigger 5.5" screen (most likely taller) with a 16:9 aspect ratio ... but the screen will not be as wide as the current Note. That was a big selling point for me. I don't want a slimmer screen.

the GNote rocks ICS just fine, actually.... not missing a thing.

with the great dev's we have on this phone, most of us have been running ICS for weeks/months now, so thats not even an issue.
this phone is as fast as you could want, and the screen just kills..Spen is a great tool as well, phone calls are loud and clear.
and, after suffering with Sprints horrific network problems over the last 10 year, ATT speeds and QOS are a tremendous "upgrade"
Pleasure or business, this is THE phone to have, IMO

You mean 16:9 aspect ratio? Regardless, I agree about not wanting a narrower phone even if it means a larger screen. That info actually helped me to finally pull the trigger on one recently.
My initial impression is very positive. The display is amazing, 4G is blazing fast, and an unexpected benefit has been better phone reception than my Nexus One.
My complaint is the Note seems a little laggy out of the box but that's without rooting or ROMing, just the addition of Go Launcher. And it's minor enough that I'm holding off rooting at least until the OTA ICS update.
It's practically a cliche at this point, but like everyone else, I could never go back to a smaller display. And I personally don't find the phone hard to operate one-handed.
