Does anyone experience "moire effects" on the display when browsing dark text on a light background - ie. on Internet Explorer on in an Email account -?
The problem is notified on Nokia EU and Nokia USA but no response from nokia; I thinks it's a matter of display technology, the PENtile matrix is so crappy and this is one (bad) behavior.
Does anyone is affected by this problem?

Yes, it's because of the PenTile matrix, my Nexus One was the same, as is the Desire I have next to me.
ok, thanks for yoir reply. i will force myself to fall in love with pentile display

You'll never fall in love with it, you just tolerate it.
Yes, specially if, like me, come from an iPhone 4.

I know what you mean. I came from a 4S to a Nokia N9 (same pentile screen) and had alot of doubt concerning that type of screen. Now i don't notice it and really like the vivid colors it gives. In the beginning it was a bit harsh on my eyes but that is all gone. When i see my wifes 4S screen the colors looks washed out compared to the clear black on my N9.
I don't love the screen (then it should've been an amoled rgb matrix clear black), but it's grown on me and I've come to like it alot and think it looks good.
Regards Dousan...
I can't find any moire effects. Maybe I am not looking closely enough.
I really like the display though.
I guess it's only noticeable if you came from a phone with a better display. My last phone was a SEw995i so the screen looks flawless to me
Coming from an HTC Mozart I really like the display. If I compare this to the HTC Mozart, it's much better, the dark theme now looks really dark, instead of washed out black (more gray).
There's no moire effect on mine at all. Just some line bleeding with black text on white background. But line bleeding and moire are two totally different things and I can tolerate the occasional line bleeding as I hardly ever notice it.
The screen is awesome and I've gotten used to the pentile. Things like the clearblack and the response time of the display is the best I've seen. Things doesn't smudge very easily when they are moving on the display as they often do on RGB displays.
Now I almost prefer a pentile display because of it's positive sides. The colors are very true too. When I compare photos on it right next to my 30" Eizo SX3031 wide gamut display which is a display for graphics/photo editing they look pretty identical to each other.

There are no positive sides to a PenTile display, other than being cheaper to make.

Qhd is not a screen technology, its a resolution.
And the problem with the colors isn't that they're dull or unsaturated compared to a super amoled., that's to be expexted. The problem is that the colors are just wrong compared to just about any screen you want to compare it too, load up some websites on the phone and a well calibrated desktop monitor and you'll easily see the difference.
Compared to my captivate im really happy. That thing made skin tones green or orange.
It has to be reiterated. The oled display technology OVERsaturates the colors. As in, the colors are overly vibrant. The atrix will more accurately display colors.
Ok, saying this again. We (at least I) am not saying this in comparison to a samoled screen, the colors on a regular LCD will obviously never look like that, the colors on the amoled are completely wrong. However that doesn't mean the atrix has them right, just look at the screen compared to a well calibrated computer monitor.

Bumping this to get some attention on this issue.
I'm considering returning my Atrix because of how bad yellows and blues look, compared to OTHER LCDs, not compared to Super AMOLED screens.
I lined up my Captivate, Atrix, iPod Touch 4, and my wife's HTC Evo Shift and fired up Words with Friends on all of them. While it's clear that the Captivate is oversaturated, if you take that out of the equation, the Atrix's colors just look bad compared to the other two LCDs. The yellow tiles look "dirty" like they have a brown or greenish tint to them. The light blues in the tabs on the home screen of Words with Friends look like they have a greenish tint as well.
I've seen a lot of people say that they think it's one of the greatest displays ever, up there on par with the iPhone 4. If that's true, I really hope mine and other people seeing this just have defective models that can be exchanged.
I'm going into my AT&T store sometime tonight or tomorrow in hopes of putting two or more Atrices side by side to compare.
If anyone else seeing this problem could do the same, it would be very helpful. Especially as it seems likely that a random one pulled out in store could have the same defect.
Scott, I have my atrix boxed up ready to go back for the same issues. I went to the at&t store and looked at their 3 demo units, all of them looked the same.
If you go to a verizon store and play with a motorola droid x you'll see that its screen looks the same as well, it's just whatever panel maker motorola is using. People that are saying "It's the greatest screen evar, just as good as the iphone 4" are suffering new gadget love and can't see the flaws. It's not the worst screen ever but it is a definite step down from other manufacturers screens.

I would have to agree, the iphone4 has a pretty good display. It is a bit oversaturated, but does look pleasing to the eye. The iphone is also much smoother when using the pinch to zoom feature. With the Atrix having a dual core processor, I thought it would at least be on par with the iphone, but for some reason it's definitely not as smooth.
Oh well... just my 2 cents.
So I went in to an AT&T store last night and compared my Atrix with their demo unit.
The colors seem a little bit better, but interestingly, the demo unit's display didn't seem as bright as my Atrix, and it may have had slightly higher contrast.
I got one of the associates to look at it and agree that mine had a slight color cast to it. They said they would do a replacement for me if I came back with my paperwork from my online order, so I said I would do that today or Saturday.
I went straight home and compared my Atrix again to my wife's HTC Evo Shift. In doing that, I still felt like the color on her screen was significantly better than on mine, and in seemed better than I remembered the store's demo unit, as well.
So, I think I need to get my phone and her phone both in there, side by side with the demo unit, and see if I could live with the screen if it was exactly the same as the demo unit. I think probably yes, given the other major advantages of this phone (qHD resolution, Tegra 2, 1GB RAM), but as a graphic designer, bad colors are hard for me to take. And colors that are off in the way the Atrix's screen is off are a graver sin to me than oversaturating a la Super AMOLED.
Bottom line, I'm still on the fence. Has anyone else done any other tests?

Wait, so now the iPhone's IPS LCD is oversaturated too? Let's face it: Atrix is weak on colors -thanks to the RGBW PenTile display, where they tried to prolong its life by replacing some Blue tiles with White tiles -which makes colors pale.
It does look great with flesh tones though. Ill give it that.
People who complain about wrong colors have been looking at way oversaturated screens... as a semi advanced photographer, I can agree that the atrix screen is very very good color wise ...

Or they got an Atrix with a defective display, like me. Ony my Atrix, there's no getting around the fact that yellows look dirty and brown, and that certain shades of blue look greenish.
Is awesome!!! Never had an HD screen before and boy is it cool! I try to look very close, but can barely see the pixels. The colors are also very amazing.
Now the question is can we use a app like voodoo screen tuner and make it even better =p lol

As much as I love the high resolution--it is AMAZING for small text--I am more bothered by the PenTile layout than I expected from reviews. I don't know about other people or how close they hold the phone to their eyes, but I can see the hatching pretty clearly in normal use on a white background. I mean, it's not HORRIBLE, but it makes the whites feel a lot less white than they do on the RGB AMOLED screens I've used. I think I need a Tab 7.7 so I can have the resolution without the PenTile tradeoffs. -_-

I read a review, can't remember which one, that was saying at full brightness the whites were incredibly white and at lower brightness settings it turned bluer. Is that true? Are you at full brightness?

It's not a matter of color reproduction; it's the physical subpixels that look a bit off. It's a subtle diagonal hatching pattern that is visible regardless of brightness. It's not horribly obvious at normal distances but I can see it. Honestly it isn't that much worse than being able to see the square pattern around individual pixels on my GS2--I was just hoping at this resolution/pixel density I wouldn't be able to see it at all.
Color reproduction isn't too bad. It's slightly different from my GS2 but I am not that picky about it, since I don't do serious photography or other art. AMOLED screens all have oversaturated colors anyway.

It's sort of like there is an overlay of tiny black dots in a diagonal pattern. As I mention above it isn't obvious especially at more than a foot or so away, but it is visible.

The screen looks fine to me. People freak out when they find out a screen is Pentile, but this isn't a Motorola pentile screen we're looking at. I'm assuming that there's a technical limitation/challenge with making Super Amoled Plus displays bigger than 4.3" or I'm sure Sammy would be using them in all of their phones. Personally, I'm enjoying the higher resolution. Can you imagine a screen this size at 800X480? It would be worse than the HTC Titan.

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm freaking out.
I'm saying this having used the phone a bit; I have it sitting right here. No argument here, it is way better than the PenTile on the RAZR or any other Moto phone I've used. And yes, I'm pretty sure you're right about the technical limitations preventing proper RGB layouts for this resolution/size, probably something to do with how small they can physically make subpixels, since it is clearly possible to have a 1280x800 Super AMOLED+ display in a 7.7" form factor. I ALSO agree that a screen this large would be awful at 800x480, and I definitely prefer the PenTile 1280x800 over RGB 800x480 at this size. I am definitely NOT saying the screen is bad, but I am disappointed because it isn't as good as I hoped it would be.
So we mostly agree. I am just more irritable I guess.

How does the screen work in direct sunlight? I am not wanting to watch a movie, but need it when working outside to read e-mail and use the phone. On my current HTC Tilt 2 I have to find shade to see anything on my screen. I have read that the Super Amoled+ screens are better. I am hoping this will work where I do not have to put on my reading glasses.
One thing is for sure, the screen definitely is an attention grabber. All of my co-workers were amazed and how sharp and clear the screen was.
This screen definitely suffers with some flash videos and dark backgrounds. Hello all,
Just got my Lumia 800 and it's awesome. However, I've noticed a little problem where the "white" on the screen distorts a bit.
If you go into the Office App, next to the big title font ("Notes", "Documents", "Locations") and slowly slide the screen or scroll the body text. I'm noticing that the white adjacent to the title font distorts a little bit. I'll shoot a video later, but this appears to happen whenever there is a white background.
Does anyone have something similar?
Thanks in advance

When i first read this post I was skeptical, but then I checked and realized you're right...that's some weird stuff, it may have something to do with the pentile amoled, my gf's 710 (LCD) doesn't seem to do that.
It is indeed inherent to the screen type, my Nexus One did exactly the same, as does the Desire I have here.
Yep, looking at it closely you can actually see some very faint rainbow coloured lines on the sides of the text when it's displayed on a white background. This happens pretty much everywhere, even inside the xda app I'm using right now...
Yeah I guess if we're all having it, it's probably normal. Not ideal, but at least other aspects of the phone makes up for it
It's a little odd because it's not isolated to one part of the screen. It actually moves with the text.
It's normal behaviour and nothing to worry about. Amoled screens works like plasma TV's and it comes with its side effects such as "line bleeding" from text and other stuff.

Heh, at times I wish I bought the Titan: big LCD screen highly enjoyable for games and vids, less artifacts compared to a pentile AMOLED, better battery life, removable battery and possibility of putting on an extended unit. What actually pushed me miles away from it is how big and stupid things looked on an oversized 480x800 display: at the end of the day you don't see more text on the screen, you just see it BIGGER, it looks like a phone for visually impaired people

It probably won't. The 900 has an AMOLED screen but it doesn't use a pentile matrix. The 800 has a slightly older AMOLED screen with one.
Samsung's Android devices have the same problem, Galaxy S - AMOLED pentile matrix. Galaxy S II - Super AMOLED no pentile.
Hi everyone.
The purple tint problem on the Lumia 900 is of common knowledge and Nokia as already issue a statement confirming an incoming software fix, however, just having bought a Lumia 800 I'm a bit concerned.
My device features a slightly tinted gradient from the left (darker) to the right (lighter) of the screen. This is easily identifiable while using the keyboard, where the greys get a purple hue on the left side, or if you open a new empty tab on internet explorer for instance, where you'll notice the lack of uniformity across the display. It should be all white but it's a pale purplish shade on the left edge and gets whiter as we move to the opposite side.
This is highly visible on the Low brightness setting or if you have it set to auto on a dark room.
As of now, there seems to be no word regarding a fix for the L800. Have any of you guys noticed this problem on your phones?
I would appreciate any feedback on this subject in order to decide what to do. The phone is very recent, so i'm still able to return or exchange it but I'm really liking the Lumia and WP7.5 and would pretty much like to stick with it as long as i can get a fix or a replacement that doesn't have this problems.
Thanks.

I have noticed this behaviour several weeks ago, too.
This is normal with amoled screens and nothing to fix with firmware. It's not really the same problem as the purple thing with the 900 since that was extreme and was some software bug somehow and only affected low brightness.
Most amoled screens do get this purple tint. Some more than others and it's only visible on white/gray backgrounds.
I replaced a Lumia 800 because it was very noticable when opening the keyboard (gradient across the whole screen) and it bothered me very much. It slapped me in the face every time I opened the keyboard. The 800 I have now hardly has it at all. I say hardly because no amoled is 100% uniform across the whole screen.
If it bothers you too much. Replace it. It won't/can't be fixed with firmware. It's not the same issue as with the 900.
Thanks for the feedback.
I've returned my first Lumia and got a new.
Even though this new unit doesn't have the same level of tint, the purplish gradient is still there and very noticeable with low brightness.
I must say i'm very surprised with what you said dannejanne. I never came across such an issue on other AMOLED screens like the ones on the Samsungs. I must admit that the Nokia screen goes way beyond the lower level of brightness of the Galaxy's but still, can find an hint that is related to the technology of the display, especially considering the price range of the Lumia 800.
In any case, thanks once more for sharing you experiences.
Well. Personally I have never seen a Amoled screen that is 100% uniform when viewing gray backgrounds. That includes Samsung phones as well.

In my mind this is a bigger issue than lack of NFC or quick charging. The screen is the one thing you're constantly looking say on a phone, not some feature. It almost seems like the screen on this phone was an afterthought.

AMOLED screens have infinite contrast which makes them bright and punchy. Going back to just about any LCD it will look washed out.
KCAL COLOR PROFILE Amoled Style:

Yes the screen is washed out compared to my note 5....not surprising really given the technology. However the more annoying screen issue is the constant dimming of the screen when darker screens are presented even when the adaptive brightness is off. The screen is constantly fluctuating and it bothers the heck out of me. Might need to use a custom rom just to get rid of it. Or sell the phone. Whichever comes first. Haha.
I'm disappointed as well, coming from the OPO. The lack of color tuning - no, that placebo slider in O2 2.1 doesn't do anything - leaves the screen with a too low gamma and too high color temperature, resulting in washed-out and cool-looking images. Stock OPO wasn't that great, but at least could be tweaked. No, I'm not looking for the overhyped Samsung AMOLED look that people equate with proper color rendition. I'm a photographer and all you need to do is put the same photos up on a computer monitor - even a business grade one - as on the phone to see how lackluster it is. By itself, it doesn't look terrible, but it's clearly not accurate.
I've got my opo2 yesterday and:
1. Screen is yellowish on the bottom! I read about it before, it was opo1 issue, but it seems to be opo2 issue too :////
2. Yeah, colors are washed out as hell comparing to my last phone - Samsung Galaxy s4 (but now white is white at least ) . Btw Is there any way to set contrast and saturation like on opo1? Why they don't include it for opo2 rom?
I compare the screens of my OP1 and OP2 and i need to say that is yellowish con OP2, isn't pure white and thats a very fault, i think that of warm colors.

I'm hearing many complaints about the screen from folks who haven't removed the factory pre-installed hazy plastic screen protector, either because they don't realize it's there or if they do don't imagine it makes much difference.
