[Q] Flash just the Radio/Modem? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Coming from HTC Thunderbolt...
We could flash just the radio in bootloader.
You just put the file (PG05IMG.zip) in the root directory and bootloader would flash it.
Is Samsung similar?
Some people found certain radios (old vs new) to work better in their area. Just because HTC/VZW updated didn't mean it was better for everyone.
I've read that the ICS leak has a new radio.
Also, do modems/radios have to be specific to GB or ICS?
I know kernels are but not sure about radios.
Thanks

Samsung you can flash radio's through recovery, you don't have to do it in fast boot like HTC. There are radio threads here, look for the Dev forum for i717 and find the cwm modem thread. It has all sorts of different radios. Word of caution though, anything you even think mIght be tmo will screw your phone up, probably requiring data wipes, re flashing ROM's, etc. the old ucla1 radio is there, the new ICS radio is in skyrocket forums. You can try skyrocket modem also, personally was screwy for me but didn't screw phone up too much. I have the 2 radio's for our phone, I'll upload them to drop box and send a link. Easier that way

New modem uclc5 - ICS

Old modem UCLA 1 ICS &GB

Most other radio's will not let you make calls or completely kill service (if you are on AT&T, I can't speak for Roger's, etc.)

is uclc5 - ICS the one that came with the leaked i717 ROM?

Im hearing of people bricking there thunderbolts installing the gingerbread radio, now does this apply to all "officially"released radios (like the one posted by the user andrew8806) on XDA or only the leaked ones? Is it safe to go on gingerbread now or should i just stay on froyo? And can someone recommend/link me a "safe" radio to flash so i can install a gingerbread rom. i have proper understanding on how to install radios i just dont know what radio to install. and should i flash radio first then rom or it dont make a difference ?
Thanks
the only radio that had a problem was th leaked mr2 and it was causing some random reboot issues but there all fine now. theres actually an mr2.5 2.75 and 3.0 radio. im on the 3.0 radio and i have had zero problems. you can find it on mclabias website --> http://devious-intentions.info/modules.php?name=Downloads&cid=6

Is there any benefit to switching to the 3.0 radio? Forgive me if that's a stupid question, I'm pretty new to the rooting scene...only been rooted 3 days and wonder why I never did this sooner.
i get way better service than i used to on any other radio. i pretty much live in a dead zone, but after switching to the 3.0 radio i can actually make calls here 4g data is way faster as well. do it!

Short answer: No
Longer answer: It was discovered that the bricks were hardware related not software. I have flashed every radio that has been released since I purchased my T-bolt at the beginning of May and have had ZERO issues.
I c. Can you link me to a radio you reccomend. And do have any tips to prevent bricking when flashing it or using it o:?

AT&T latest radio is 37P. Get it here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23821203&postcount=17
I have tested both the 36P and 37P radios extensively.
At first I had problems with the 37P and went back to the 36P, but I am now back testing the 37P again, and it seems like my data issues are not as bad as before, (could be any number of reasons I was having problems when I first tested 37P), so I would advise flashing the 37P now.
I appreciate it.

[Radios] [S-Off] CDMA+LTE Links Live again for experienced users

I am not responsible for any damage to your device! .
DO NOT mix ICS and GB Radios. DO NOT ask how to install these radios, I feel if you must ask how your not ready to handle the task and the demons that may occur, there are many threads on how to do these things.
If you end up goofing up and realize you have no or fluctuating 4G do the following.
1. Flash the RUU of your choice.
2.Upon installation flash nothing! reboot into HBOOT and select clear storage and let it run its course (remove sdcard if you want even though it wont wipe external card
3. Reboot phone normally verify everything is smooth
4. Optional- Flash Eng Hboot for GB or the Juopunutbear modified Hboot for ICS
5. Alternate Fix- Ive heard that you can flash stock recovery to the phone via fastboot reboot into hboot and select clear storage and will have same effect to get 4G working. Custom recoveries do not work to fix the issue via wipe menu. I only state use RUU of your choice as it gives you a clean slate and can be ruled out down the line in troubleshooting
Heres my compilation of CDMA+LTE Radios.
They are available as they came from RUU or Individual for mix n match.

I would think any. Its just the radio. At least with GB ROMs.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
It game from GB, so will work there. I ran it on RezRom S4 as well but not more than a few minutes to test it out so it appears to work for GB, ICS 3.6 sense based roms, and the ICS 4.0 evita based ones as well.
Of course I cant atest to the battery life on each just yet thats going to vary from user to userand rom to rom
Would it be pretentious of me to ask for the leaked ICS radios in this form?
I'm not quite up to packaging things on my own just yet...the S-Off method had my hair on end

I know at some point in the leaks, the new firmware changed the mount points for the memory... internal and SDcard I believe.
It messes with the OS seeing all or any of the memory.
If this change is in the radios then people might have issues mixing GB and ICS ROMs and radios.
If it is in Hboot, we don't need to worry.
There are a couple versions of ICS leaked firmware, the newest is the problem child for some people. Maybe we need to have the other leaked versions as well.
Hi no,
Would you please create RUU 2.xx.xxx radio ?
Thanks

True but theres a large handful of other files in the firmware and I dont think that radio firmware will contain the memory mount points
Anyone try flashing the new radios on old firmware?

And you concluded that from what exactly? Did you try messing up with the framework and it worked for you? Thought so.
Point is, till this time, no one knows for sure where the issue is in. Some say it's the RIL others suggest the framework..etc. I for one, is keeping all the options open.

When the sms fails to be sent, it's due to trying to use the CDMA service and not the gsm as per logcat. Additionally this was a problem on stock GB radio, OTA GB radio and leaked ICS radio. So none of the available radios are capable of resolving the issue.
It's a software side problem and the only two things left to research is RIL and framework.
and just a friendly advice, don't come off like an douche, we all want the same thing
Thank you for posting these for the community.

[Q] Updating a Videotron Amaze 4G to ICS without S:Off

Hey, Seems like Videotron is lazy when it comes to updating their user to the latest OS.
My friend has this phone and since I know a lot when it comes to do simple things like flashing roms and kernel, he wanted me to help him to update his phone. Thing is, I can't get, for the love of Morgan Freeman (AKA god), to S-Off his Amaze 4G. So I'll try the alternative since he doesn't need anything fancy other than the regular stuff.
I know that I can flash manually the OTA for carriers that has it but I don't know if I should try a Telus, T-Mobile rom and so on.
So what can I do about that?
And something else too, the last time I updated from OTA, it was when I received my Nexus S so I don't know if it factory resets and I need to create some backup in case.
You will HAVE to s-off if you want to update via another carriers ICS rom file, it's not possible with s-on, check the pin hole on his amaze, you may have to take a sharp pin and dig inside of it a bit, there seems to be a plastic covering it at times. Try s-off again after that, use a a paper clip with some tape insulating it, it works really great compared to wires. S-offed an evo 3d on the very first try today using one.
Okay, cool. Thanks for tips I will try it out.

This part is still unanswered and as I am in the same situation I ask the same question
I don't think the phone carrier matters once s-off since we usually don't flash the radio but especially for OTA upgrades maybe you have to be superCID and/or use a carrier that uses the same frequencies, 1700/2100 in Videotron's case?
Are there any other crucial differences than the radio between one carrier and another? Do we absolutely need to go by the OTA of another carrier to get to ICS or is there a way to flash any ICS based ROM and fix it manually after? I searched that but I can't even find the question asked... If we can't, then why? What are the modified parts from stock GB to stock ICS on the same carrier?
Maybe should I start a new question thread... Does xda uses that one question per thread rule? Don't remember to have seen it in the rules.
Thanks in advance!

All amaze devices basically have the same band, all the carriers we have here use the same band, so the choice of software is upto you since they basically have the same options, the only exception being T-Mobile, they are the only carrier that add in their own apps and modify a few things about the firmware and thanks to the htc/apple issue they changed the app association as well, so if you want the pure software with everything stock HTC the way it would be on an international version, then the Telus option would be best for you.
Good for the carrier specific software. Or in this case the absence of specificity
One detail is that Videotron installs a single app it's called "Portail Videotron" for renting and stream movies over the 4G network, a good way to have users using an enormous amount of data. But as long as the radio that comes with the Telus ROM is the same this app wich I don't even use I really don't care.
Will start a new thread for the other questions. Or won't if you think it won't be useful.

Ok so my questions are basically already in my first post. It is not that I don't understand the procedure to upgrade to ICS by dl the OTA, rename it to PH85IMG.zip and let hboot do the rest, it is just that I would like to be free to go back and forth between GB and ICS as I have always did with other phones. I can't see wich part of the system can be modified only by the OTA and not manually.
Edit: one may find it useless, it is just that I dislike much to be dependent on the OTA's

Due to signatures and encryption and in the cases of the things we just don't wanna touch like the radio, it's risky to mess with things like the radio and since we don't have a PH85IMG for every carrier like we do for tmobile we have to depend on the OTA files, in order for you to switch between GB and ICS as you wish you will have to s-off, that's the only way. Once you're s-off and super cid, you can upgrade, downgrade, swap hboots, swap roms, try out other carrier roms, all without restrictions.
Ok I tried to flash ICS EnergyRom with s-off, now that I am supercid I try once again.

Make sure you update your device to ICS first before you flash a custom rom, certain background files like radio, hboot etc have to be the ICS version for it to work.
That is what I don't like... But just to make it clear, with ICS version of hboot radio etc both GB and ICS are supported while with GB version ICS is not?
For now I feel a bit lazy so I will use the usual way and will look back at this at some moment.
Thanks

The Videotron RUU is supposed to work. You have to be in the bootloader wich you can access by removing your battery and then vol-down + power, relocked (not in recovery). I don't know if it has to be stock CID, don't think so.

That RUU is GB, not ICS since nobody every pulled the ICS OTA file, I don't have an amaze anymore to pull it so if any of you are on GB, kindly pull the file for other users.

How can I update only the hboot? And would an hboot from a different Canadian carrier still work? e.g. hboot from Telus and rom from Wind Mobile...

[Q] Do I neet to flash a new Radio

I just recently did my first root (CM11 on my i757m). I am looking at rooting my wifes i717m. There seems to be a little less info available for this modle.
If I flash a new ROM, (CandyKat or something) do I also need to flash a new Radio like I did with my i757m? All the threads I have read don't seem too mention a radio. If I do a full wipe (like the instructions stat), won't the radio be gone? Or is it included in the ROM?
Also, from what I read, it seems that the AT&T ROMs will work on the i717m (Bell). Is this true?

Most ROMs have a radio check in the updater script and is usually the ucmd3 radio, would be best to flash that one since its the newest. No the radio won't get erased the radio will remain no matter how many ROMs you flash. Only way for it to get over written is if you flash another radio to your device. The att ROMs should work for bell just as long the device is carrier unlocked, I'm running mine on T-Mobile and never had any serious issues.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I will have to look at getting the phone carrier unlocked before attempting to flash a new ROM.
