I am having major problems trying to tether my iPad off of my Razr maxx. Prior to this I had a rooted Droid X and I used the "Wireless Tether" app which worked flawlessly (but slow on 3g).
I rooted my Razr Maxx soon after receiving it without issue using the motofail method. I have tried to get my iPad to connect using: Foxfi, Open Garden, Barnacle, and even used TiBu to bring back my old "Wireless Tether" app that I had on my Dx and none of these work. The tethering apps recognize the ipad as connecting. At best the ipad will recognize the network and show that it is connected but I will not be able to surf.
I've tried rebooting the phone between installs of the apps. Uninstalling and reinstalling the tethering apps. Playing with the ipad (wifi, airplane mode on and off, forgetting networks and reconnecting). I've tried running the apps with WEP, WPA networks and at times no security.
On the barnacle log I see: DHCP: Failed to parse ---numbers and letters--- for brncl_dhcp_dns2 and then NAT: Could not set MTU of rmneto: Invalid argument. Not sure what that means????
Someone on another forum recommended trying to Freeze the stock wifi hotspot app. I tried that and it did not work.
This is killing me. My wife has an unrooted Charge and gets her iPad to connected flawlessly with Foxfi. The only thing I haven't tried is unrooting my phone and running Foxfi?? Any thoughts? I've been at this all day and still have not gotten it to work.

I had the same exact issue with both of my razr maxxes.. i downloaded wifi tether beta 11 onto my computer and transferred/installed the apk file. All was successful.
It kept giving me a "connected with limited access" message.. It was connected but would not transfer data. None of the wifi tether apps worked from the market place. Try another beta version and manually install it.
I got it to work. I unrooted my phone (with the Doomlord method) and then ran foxfi (and it worked). Then I rerooted (with motofail) and foxfi still works. Wierd.
I have had a few other wierd quirks that were solved with either factory resets or reroot and unroot (wifi wouldn't connect to home network, and I lost the data connection).
Now everything seems to working fine. Thanks for the help.

I just got a LG thrive, Im using my post-paid sim card from a Inspire 4G in it. Im trying to get the wifi tether working. I tried using quick setting but it crashes the phone. I tried using the hot spot widget but it also crashes the phone. I also tried using a modified apn from this thread

On th stores demo thrive I was able to get it working after two minutes and only one crash. I have already installed pdanet, not sure how well it works on this phone since I have yet to test it, but i would really like to get the wifi tether working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone working on getting it to work for LG-P506 (LG Thrive)? Or know of any methods to get it to act as a wireless hotspot? I've tried Quick Settings and it restarts the phone but haven't tried Easy Tether yet because I don't even know if it enables shared WiFi and uses a USB connection to share it.
I was able to down load easy tether from the market place when I took the sim out and went to the market on wifi. It wouldn't let me do it with the sim in. I haven't actually used the app yet because I usually use my iPad or galaxy and rarely use the laptop anymore. But it did work with the backflip and that phone is big time locked down.

and it is the same error for USB tethering or portable Wifi hotspot

Has anyone figured out a way to get the pre installed hotspot working? i have tried similar guides from the newer droids and older gingerbread ''hacks'' attempts have been disappointing the ip address response error comes up no matter what i try wifi tether beta and the one from the market will not show up for my xoom which makes them useless at the moment. have tried radiocomm ''hacks'' for data workarounds no luck either ugh. thanks

It somehow forces the sprint hotspot to activate, which allows for infrastructure mode. Ignore any errors at start up.
While this won't make the stock app work, you can root your phone and use the Open Garden Wifi tethering app which works with 3G, 4G and is much more customizable.
I just installed ICS from the Verizon OTA update (after manually kicking it off). I was rooted before, but had stock ROM. I did absolutely nothing to try to keep root (didn't install Rootkeeper or anything like that). The install took about an hour, but it completed without any errors or hiccups.
After the install was complete, I verified that I still had root (yes, yea!). The next thing that I did was try to run my WIFI Tethering app, SVTP. It ran fine until I told it to turn on the hotspot. The phone immediately rebooted. So I uninstalled and reinstalled SVTP. Same result. It reboots the phone as soon as I try to turn on the hotspot. Sooo... apparently I need a new WIFI tethering app. :crying:
Can anyone recommend one that works well on the Razr... on ICS... on Verizon?

I've emailed the developer. But Foxfi works for me.
Why not just hack the stock tethering app? You'll get stronger and more dependable wifi then any app. It's as simple as changing a "1" to a "0".
Download Sqlite Editor (a couple bucks), open it, go to:
- The second Settings Storage (com.motorola.android.providers.settings)
- Settings.db
- Settings
- line 150 will be "entitlement check". Change the 1 to a 0. Save changes, reboot and you can tether for free.

You see, when I first updated, I thought that I had root, because SuperUser was there (as it turned out, an old, out-of-date version) and it said that there was root, but it was not really rooted. Read this post in this thread about how I finally achieved root.
After finally getting root, I again tried SVTP. Again it crashed my phone. Next I tried Joshw0000's method and was successful using the built in Mobile HotSpot app (but without having to sign up for $30/month to Verizon). His instructions may not be as clear as everyone would like, so if you're confused, watch this YouTube video.
Using a 4G connection on my phone and tethering by BlueTooth, Speedtest.net reported 85ms Ping time; 1.40 Mbps download; 1.55 Mbps upload. Unfortunately, I am unable to get WIFI tethering to work with the built-in HotSpot. My Window 7 Pro (64bit) pc tries to connect, then gives me a generic error. On the Razr, it briefly shows a message that a device has been disconnected.
I've tried FoxFi and it works over WIFI. Speedtest results for it were 94ms Ping; 3.04 Mbps download; 6.85 Mbps upload.
I also tried WIFI Tether 3.1 (Beta 14) (also called WIFI Tether for Root Users) from here. It's available on Google Play. It says that it is running, by my PC never sees the SSID. I've used that tethering app in the past and found that to be a frequent problem.

Glad you got it working. That's odd about the stock tethering not working right. I just came back from a business trip where I bluetooth tethered my Ipad the whole time and tethered to my work laptop (Windows 7 64 bit). The hotel wifi was so slow, I just tethered from my phone the whole time. Plus I couldn't VPN from the hotel wifi (I assume because I saved it as a public network and saved my tether as a private one - crazy security at work).

Thanks for confirming that Foxfi works.
The Foxfi description says it will work without ROOT - I'm not sure if that is just in bluetooth, or wifi too. Foxfi also mentions that you should use a proxy... I just change my DNS servers - not sure if that works to stop monitoring of traffic.
I haven't tried the DB hack, but I just read, in another post, that ICS and GB line number are different.
In sql editor, 2nd settings storage, there is no 150 , entitlement check is #70, i change from 1 to 0, and still doesn't work, can someone please help...... thanks

On the ICS 211 Verizon OTA it is # 150. If you've flashed a rom or are on another build, then it will be a different #. As long as you save the change and reboot your phone it will work. I've done this on multiple roms and other Motorola devices without any problems. I can only confirm this works on Verizon phones. What phone/carrier/build do you have?

Are you 100% sure that you're editing the correct file? Have you watched the YouTube video (link is in this thread)?
Ok, so I've tried everything that I could think of to get it working. Considering literally a month ago i provided the answer that solved someone else problem. lol
So i just had to get a replacement DNA, and I just finished rooting it, in the process of installing all my apps, and I come to my tethering app.
I have used Wifi Tether for Root Users in the past, and it has worked. Obviously with the settings:
Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JN (wlan0)
Setup-Method: Auto
WiFi-driver reload: Checked
Routing fix: Checked
But i can't see my Network being broadcast at all. I've tried restarting my phone, my computer, re-instlaling the app.
I double checked, it is receiving root privileges.
My next step is to re-install ViperDNA, but I really don't feel like doing that hopefully i don't have to.
Ok, ok ok, everyone point and laugh at the noob who forgot to flash the boot.img.
So i flashed the boot.img and it works now. *sigh* /WalkOfShame
Similar problem with WiFi Tether
I am having a similar problem with WiFi Tether. My DNA is unlocked and rooted with Superuser. When I try to tether I get errors. The only three things that show as done are "Loading WiFi driver", "Enabling IP forwarding", and "Tethering now running". All other items fail. All my settings are identical to the ones mentioned above. My computer will tether to the phone, but the internet won't work. 4G works on the phone and I can connect to other hotspots without any problem. One thing that I find odd is that Superuser asks for permission every time I start or stop tethering, even though I set it to remember. I'm not sure what's causing that, but Superuser seems to be working with Root Checker and the other apps that need it.
I also tried Barnacle without any success. Errors from Barnacle are "WIFI: Could not set ad-hoc mode of wlan0: Operation not permitted" and "Could not connect to NAT, will retry later". My computer can see the Barnacle network but it won't connect at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions to sort this out??? Thanks in advance for your help.
I got it sorted out. Just for future reference to anyone that runs into anything similar, I installed the CubeStock kernel and that didn't fix it, but I read somewhere that WiFi Tether doesn't play well with Superuser, so I installed SuperSU and it is running like a champ now.
I just installed the new Paranoid Android, and I cannot seem to get the Portable Hotspot to work. I was using the stock rom, and Verizon's 'Mobile Hotspot' worked flawlessly after using the SQLite hack. I have tried Barnacle and Wifi Tether for Root Users (which used to be my go-to, until it just stopped working after an update). I cannot get any of these to work, as Wifi Tether comes up with the error, 'Tethering started with errors, please check 'show log''. When I check the log, there is nothing in it.
Any ideas on what is going on here? It is almost as if there is a messed up driver somewhere, but I am not knowledgeable enough to figure it out. Like I said, I used to have it running perfectly one day, then it seemed like all of my tethering apps wouldn't work. I resorted to using the built in Mobile Hotspot, and it started working fine again.
Strange thing, I also paid for FoxFi, and even that wouldn't work, which I found very odd..

One of the beta versions of Wifi Tether turned on with no errors, but I could not find the SSID once it was supposedly turned on. But, when I go to ParanoidAndroid, it uses a different type of 'Mobile Hotspot' app named 'Portable Hotspot', and it just gives me an error (but no details, justs says error under it and then greys itself out.

I had an issue with 3.69 Paranoidandriod and had to do the terminal emulator hack to get wifi to work and that also somehow fixed my tether. If you haven't yet also try to run a fix permission and see if that will take care of things. I will test mine (currently running 3.97 as well) and get back with you later to let you know what I found.
Just saw that there's an update to Paranoidandroid which is 3.98 and he posted that he fixed the wifi tethering. Try to update and see what that does for you. I tried to fix permission on versino 3.97 and it didn't help. I tried terminal emulator b/c my wifi stopped working and that did fix that issue.
I just loaded it up, and still nothing. Now, when I try to turn on the hotspot, it just keeps saying 'Turning hotspot on...' and doesn't change. I tried connecting and it still is nowhere to be seen.
Are there any instructions out there for the terminal hack method, or a way that worked for you?
