[Q] Use Tasker to control email sync schedules? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using the default ICS email application to connect to the exchange server at work and the application is perfect for me. Easy to use, nice and clean etc.
However, I have one major issue. You can't set sync periods, so for instance..Automatically Push emails between 9-5 Monday-Friday and outside those times, don't sync.
This is needed as I get automatic emails every hours but obviously I dont want these going on through the night. You could say turn the phone off, but I am required to have it on loud for on call work.
Does anyone know if I can use Tasker to modify the settings in the email app depending on the time? I could keep doing it manually, but would be easier if Tasker took care of it for me

I am looking for the exact same thing. Note that it already exists for K9 mail client.
If anybody finds anything, please let us know !
Cheers

In k9mail one can turn off notifications at night, not sync. Are you sure that sync can be turned off at night in k9?

I run an exchange server out of my house and love it works great
Push required full time data connection. I don't use it because of that. I use 30 minutes poll on imap and love results.
eh Activesync doesnt use that much bandwidth actually. Its very minimal useage as it lets the connection sit idle for most of the time
I'm sure it doesn't. The problem is that the data connection has to remain live.
I poll every 30 minutes, and then 30 sec later, my connection drops.
right its live but its idle so it uses little or no battery anyway and unless you specifically make sure it disconnects the data conn it most likely will remain live as well just idle the same as push would do for you
A hotmail/live.com account is free and will get you push email.... Lots easier than setting up and managing an exchange server at your house.

how dare you suggest i drop gmail for hotmail.
I thought push was supposed to be really easy on the battery, whats all this about constant connections?
I use it and love it. I never have to worry about backing up my contacts. Just flash new ROM and put in IP Addy of server/UsernameW and I'm good to go.
I however do notice a drain on battery if you leave it set to default "as arrives" Set mine to 30 min. as well.
Using hotmail is a good idea, but I have used the same hotmail account for YEARS and that is where I get all my junk spam. Would eat up my data connection and battery if I used that.
Is Blackberry Connect free? I've never tried. Wanna use it for my Work email (which is Groupwise - yes I know). I use PushEffect by Qorefunctions for all my other email accounts?

I am really surprised not that many people use live/hotmail on there ppc. I love google/hate M$ but... When it comes to mobile product M$ beats G.
Live/Hotmail (rare link ! http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/mobile/wl/download-en-us.mspx) is REALLY convenient. With synchronization schedule "as items arrive" I still have 50-70% battery life left at the end of the day (with no2chem's rom). Did not notice much difference compared to manual sync.
Plus, you get contacts synchronization - somewhat less "pushy" - not sure, how often it syncs, but works great too. BTW, make sure to backup you contacts before installing the WLWM! MS is working on improving the live/hotmail, they are now full of AJAX and I'm looking forward for a calendar push.
With gmail trying to sync contacts is major PIA, even using 3-rd party software (and I tried many!).
If you are still unconvinced to try live/hotmail, sign up for SEVEN (http://community.seven.com/main.php) (free!)
it works as an intermediate between various POP/IMAP providers, making them work like push email - not sure how but it works. I was using it for gmail/my server's IMAP but decided to go with hotmail (they had frequent server outages this summer, I've heard they were fixing them...).
In the end, you definitely do not need blackberry or setting up home exchange (with Exchange or Kerio Mail Server) to have real time push email on the PPC!
Using SBS 2008 in the home, with it's POP connector dumping all my wanted pop accounts to my exchange mail box AND PUSh this is the best though as a MVP the SBS was free except the hardware to run it (requires 64 bit /4G's) not a good solution unless your in my line of work - PUSH was the simplist thing to setup and configure ActiveSync btw is on demand and have had no issues with call/battery

Push Email for HD2

Hi,
Originally back in 2000-2007 I was a Nokia and Blackberry User. Instant Emails I am very much used to, however I decided to take a break from Blackberry and right so as now everyone has one and I find it annoying! LOL!
in 2008 I got a Nokia e71, the email schedule was a crap annoying 15mins, so I decided to see if there is anything out there to speed it up!
I found emoze. This app was a lifesaver, once you got it to work ofcourse.
Now I am on a HD2 with a batter life equivalent to a snail on a motorway, (slow to move but quick to die)
I am in need for a more than 5mins schedule on my emails without the battery dying so quickly. I tried emoze on the HD2 but it does not work, it gets as far trying to add an account which then crashes.
I looked at the gmail push, problem is I have my own doman hosted email accounts I am not a fan of gmail, hotmail etc, as I am working professional and such accounts are frowned upon and not taken seriously.
Sorry for the story I thought i give you a understanding of where i am coming from etc.
Thanks.
Exactly something i am looking for too, and for exactly the same reason mentioned! i got my own domain too, so business mails are strictly on that, and hotmails good only for the "forwards"
Please help guys!
what are u guys talking about , if you need it for business , use exchange , if u're ok with google, use google sync for your gmails. Thats push email for you.
Agree, with above - MS Exchange server works like a charm!!
Emoze works on my HD2.
I've got two accounts configured on it, one is an Outlook Web Access (OWA) and the other is my own domain.
Re-try Emoze and let me know exactly what faults you are having and I'll do my best to help you.

hi there....another app that as good as emoze (even better for me then emoze) is seven .....you should try it bro.
here is the like for it: http://www.seven.com/
thought it is still in beta, but it work great!
mail2web offer an exchange based email service. I've been using it for a year with no problems
yeah.. use seven
best push email for me, been using it since I was still using Eten M600
Hi guys,
Exchange
you make it sound like going out buying a dedicated server, install exchange and setup my emails (4 accounts in total) is a walk in the park.
dont get me wrong i do this stuff for a living, but my business has never had the need for an exchange server. and wont for a long time. so thats not an option.
emoze
i will try it again and see how it goes.
seven
never liked it much, as emoze was easier for me and suited my needs, even got a pro license as well.

Hi there,
im not quite sure if emoze works fine with the HD2, give it a try and tell us
emoze crashes!
Hi no emoze does not work on the HD2.
- it crashes on the part where you need to add the account settings for your pop3 server.
- also you get the Microsoft reporting error screen
- i remember one i could edit the settings but for some reason i get no joy this time.
gonna give seven a try.
seven
Seven also was a waste of time.
Not sure what to do next, gonna pm the guy that said he got emoze to work.
Do you not use Gmail because how the email address looks to clients or for security purposes?
If it's the first one, Gmail offers hosted email services for custom domain names. So you use their service and all the benefits that come with it but it would be [email protected].

Seven works awesome for me. Instant push mail.. I use it with Lotus Notes and its the best push mail connector service I have used. I have tried Emoze and mail2web services but like the seven best.
@mr3rown:
You should try Google's business package where they will host the email service for your domain name.
Most of the ISPs will host your domain email on their exchange servers and its cheap you never have to worry about your own servers and you can have as many emails as possible.
Google Hosted Emails
Right,
i took a look at the google hosted email, and volia, i have updated all my mx records and cnames etc, working fine on my clients, just now need to start setting it up on my HD2.
will post back with results.
Apologies if this is not what you guys are looking for but for push mail, I have 3 accounts on servers supporting imap-idle and I use Flexmail to check mail so I get instant notifications when mails come in and it doesn't poll the server in x-mins thus no battery drain.
I've been using this guy's homebrew solution without any problems. http://www.gudensoft.com/emailscheduler/

[Q] Email - POP3 Server Issue (Deleting from Server)

Hi. Is there a known glitch with the Android Email App where it takes emails off the server when in POP3 configuration, even when you have the "Don't Delete From Server" option on "Never"? I'm experiencing this problem. Is there a fix?
Thanks,
-Adam
IIRC "Don't delete from server" is a traditional client config setting that controls whether or not the email is deleted at the time it is polled by the POP client. It does not necessarily control whether or not the client later reaches out and tells the server to delete an arbitary message, and I think this ambiguity is the issue.
My guess is Android is deleting the message from the server when it's deleted from the phone. See the last few posts here.
The workaround I see folks using is to set the "last N days" setting low and letting them fall off the phone's view rather than deleting them.
I haven't used POPn in a while so input welcomed from more knowledgeable folks.

I just read through the link. I took the advice of setting up the email client on my computer to leave mail on the server, but it still gets removed when I receive it on my phone.. maybe it's time to call T-Mobile.
But the desktop client leaves it on the server? If so, sounds like an Android problem and I figure TMO will be useless. Hopefully someone else jumps in to clue us in. I don't have a pop+webmail account handy to use for testing (and I'm running CM7).
Are you running the stock T-mobile ROM that came with the phone? Would it be acceptable to try some other (free) POP3 client from the android market?

When I receive the email on my desktop, I can't get it on my phone.. even though I have it set to keep the messages on the server. This is weird!
I know that POP3 is kind of outdated and IMAP is the new popular standard. I'd switch it over to IMAP, but I don't like how when I delete messages from the Inbox, they reappear the next time I check my email.

Yeah, I'm running the stock ROM. What POP3 Client would you recommend from the market?
Thanks,

Actually, I think the weirdness is on the server, since the desktop client won't leave them there either. If you share who the mail provider is someone might chime in with info or a fix.
Dunno any 3rd party pop3 apps, as I don't use them.

[Q] Need mail sync help

My unrooted GN2 isn't fetching mail. I'm not sure if it's a bug or user error and would appreciate some help. I've got just one [pop3] email account and use the stock email app with the latest firmware. In the settings for this account under Period to sync it's 1 month or 100 emails. Under Sync schedule both peak and off-peak are set to every 15 minutes. I haven't roamed yet but it's set to the same settings while roaming. All the server settings are correct because when I manually send and receive it works fine. If I go to settings/email from the home screen the account is listed and below it it says sync disabled, with no way to enable sync-ing. Would be grateful to get this issue solved.
I haven't use the native email app in four years now. I did this a long time ago and it's worked great for me: http://www.androidcentral.com/using-gmail-your-own-personal-push-mail-server
If you don't want to use the Gmail app, you might want to consider using one of the 3rd party email clients in the Play Store. It seems that K-9 is the most popular.
If you want to stick with the native email app I would recommend that you remove the email account and reinstall it. Someone that uses that app will probably have some better advice for you soon.
Good luck.
Thanks- I'm gonna give it a little time before I change apps. Re-installing the account will be the next thing I try if I can't figure it out soon. In the past I've used and been pretty happy with K-9 and Kaiten but after using the new phone for a week I'm happy with the stock email program- seems just as good as the others for my basic needs. The phone itself... what a leap up from the other smart phones I've owned! It's a million times better than my last two phones- Droid X and Charge.
I'm actually having the same problem. I use the stock email app for my Hotmail account. It worked fine when I first got the phone, but now I never get notifications and even when I go in and hit the sync button, it will say "last synced at x:xx" but there won't be any new messages. But if I check my mail on my laptop, there's a ton of new messages.
I'd switch to K-9 if it wasn't so friggin ugly.
Sorry- that stinks. I'm still able to get my mail but only by manually hitting the sync button. I'm gonna go give Kaiten a try again since the native app is buggy.
Update- Kaiten apparently stinks now too. There's a beta out that everyone says is not good so I went with K-9. Installed and set up easily and got is syncing properly.

K-9 syncs automatically like it's supposed to. Looks like it's just a bug in the native app.

Have you tried that app? For ten bucks I'm gonna pass but I do appreciate the help and if there's another [free or at least only a few bucks... AquaMail seems to be the best of the bunch. Haven't had a glitch since I started using it about 10 days ago. It's also, by a pretty big margin, the most customize-able so if you like like that it's well worth trying.

[Q] Is there a way to make my S4 look like a GNex for exchange email purposes?

Here's the deal - I want to add my corporate email account to the stock app on my S4 however - my company has stopped approving individual Android phones to the network. They now want me to use the 3rd party app Touchdown, which I don't want to do.
My last phone was a Galaxy Nexus and was able to successfully use the activesync exchange. Is there a way to trick my company in thinking I have a GNex (approved phone) so I can use the native app? Changing the phone name in the build.prop file didn't seem to work.
I'd prefer to use the S4 native app but if I can pull the stock app from the GNex, that works too.
Thanks for your help!

I can't really answer your question, but have one of my own to you. What's wrong with Touchdown? I actually prefer it since I only have to enter my pin when I launch the app. When I configured the stock app for Exchange I had to enter it every time I woke my phone which drove me crazy. I acknowledge it's a personal preference thing.

Stock looks so much nicer. Looks like an app actually created for JB. Touchdown looks like a blackberry app from 2003. I like the way stock integrates with my calendar.
Also, I used the modified version of the stock app so I didn't have to enter a PIN

When you setup the account in Touchdown you just select the Calendar to sync.
I have used it on many different ROMs and since my Galaxy Nexus. I have noticed that sometimes it can take a while for the events to appear in the calendar. (A couple hours at times at first.)
I think you are SOL. The Exchange server you will connect to can (and is probably configured) to check a unique hash generated from your current phone that is registered at the first sync that was done on your GNex. There are hacks out there, but I have no idea how well they work.

Can you point me to the modified stock app? I'd at least like to take a look and see if it's something I can use. I'll not totally sold on Touchdown and an alternative would be nice.

I'm a little confused here. So you can use your phone but only if you use Touchdown. Does touchdown connects to your network some special way? What error do you get when you try to use your S4 mail app?

Please tell me how you accomplish this?

When you initially set up the account it gives you the tick boxes for email, contacts, and calendar. I select email and calendar but not contacts and it has always synced my calendar.

Correct. I was told by my internal IT that they do not authenticate individual models of Android phones anymore for activesync (because there is so many different versions. ugh.). So they tell you that if your device isn't already on the list, you need to use Touchdown. I was able to use the stock app on the Gnex, but can't on my S4. The error message simply says "Setup could not finish: Authentication failed".
I was hoping there would be some way to manipulate the app so my phone would appear as a GNex to the network.
Now that the S4 had been out for a little bit I will give this a bump and hope someone had a solution Please help . Thanks!

Not sure if this will help you but for a while I had flipped to another client see this url http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-galaxy-note-2/231093-i-miss-my-email-widget.html
And see the post from 12-18-2012, 11:55 AM alvarez13.
One of the many times I restored I did have a problem with FC's and created a step 6...
6. If this doesn't work just remove those two apps from the app folder and install the 2 apks from the SD Card. Then run TIBU and convert email to a system app, if it errors reboot the device.
If all else fails you just remove those two apks, and rename the original files back and reboot. Of course as always....
Please make a backUp when trying any mod, I am not responsible if your phone breaks. Yada Yada :good:
So update: I downloaded CM and can use the stock email app. For some reason on CM - my S4 appears as a GNex to my company's servers. Is there anyways to make that change so I can enjoy stock email use on TouchWiz?
Somebody must know how to make this change. Please help!

When you initially set up the account it gives you the tick boxes for email, contacts, and calendar. I select email and calendar but not contacts and it has always synced my calendar.

I also did not find a way to sync calendar. Should I un-install Touch Down and re-install it to get to the option?
Thanks

I would suggest Hyperdrive as an option and choose aosp email client vs tw. Hope that helps. Idk if it will but it seems it would since it's based off of cm's email client.
If I helped don't forget to hit that thanks button.
