thx, im asking that if i can root then i will get future updates of my currently specified region on S2 ? & will it will b detected by kies or i have to use odin for future updates
Kies is a crappy piece of software.
Odin or mobile Odin are much better.
You will always be able to update/restore using odin.
Simply download your firmware using an app called checkfus. (Check firmware update server)
Then flash via Odin.

what i know is you can if you stay genuine, means dont change csc modem kernel.
if you go custom you cant and changing even a csc makes you custom

as far i know if you just root without changing anything you can, but might be wrong as i really dont use kies
I thought you could also update by KIES, even if you are rooted.. unless you are on a other ROM than an original samsung ROM..
But on the other hand, you can also watch on samfirmware if there might be an update en update your SGS2 through odin, then you dont need KIES after all..

Just rooting makes no difference to kies. You will still be able to update.

From my experience if your rooted, Kies doesn't recignise it for update. Guess its depends how you root it. But IMHO kies sucks. Better of using Odin and do it manually. Less chance of stuff ups. You can reset and clear cache, then restore with titanium. I don't know how many times on here I've read people having troubles after a kies update. I always wipe and clear, never had a problem.

Unlike some Sony and Motorola devices, rooting the Galaxy S2 doesn't require you to unlock the bootloader. Other than having the "SU" program installed in the system partition, there are no other changes in the device. That is, if you take a more conservative approach to the rooting process other than flashing insecure kernels and the like. There are ways of rooting that leave your phone just like it was before - except that there is a 'su' binary in there.
Some phones won't update with KIES after rooting because some users with root privileges make changes to their device that prevent KIES from updating the phone. KIES however - and that's be written before - is a crappy piece of software. It's nearly useless - totally, actually! You absolutely don't need KIES for anything.
Installing ROMs and kernels using ODIN have nothing to do with rooting. You don't need one to make the other work. For Mobile ODIN you need root, however.
You can flash any ROM you want, including official ones, usin ODIN or Mobile ODIN. There are, however, several advantages to using Mobile Odin:
- it leaves your phone rooted after the process (if you want), even with official ROMs
- it can work with any ROM you want
- there is no need to enter download mode, which confuses some users
- it doesn't increase the flash counter
- it works from the phone, so there is no need of a computer to make it work
- it allows you to select only the part of the flash archive you want (bootloader, kernel, system, csc, etc)
Like I said, the problem some users with rooted phones have is that they go on an "uninstalling spree", and uninstall more than they should have. That sometimes renders the phone malfunctioning is some aspects. If you root, be careful with what you do afterwards regarding messing with system apps.

Hello,
I am using a Galaxy S2 (I9100) running Android 2.3.3 that has been rooted with the zerglings method (the one with busybox where you don't use ODIN and just execute the batch file from your computer). I am currently stuck with a wireless mobile broadband connection that wont let Kies update (Gets stuck at "preparing firmware upgrade components"). Yes, I am using the latest Kies and have tried on a different laptop as well.
Now that I cannot have the official update from Samsung, and since I already have lost my warranty, what is the safest way that I can use to upgrade to ICS? And in case I end up bricking it, can I recover it?
Another reason why I am a bit unsure is that I don't want to lose root. I hope I'll be able to retain root and other installed apps (like Droidwall, ES File explorer etc.)?
Regards,
Sayak
Regardless of what upgrade path you end up taking, you will lose root. Sorry.
As long as you find and use a firmware meant for your exact model phone, there is no danger in flashing a firmware with Odin. (unless you do something weird, like unplug the phone or your computer loses power in the middle of the flash or something)
There is a thread on this forum with all the stock GB/ICS roms you need. (Look and you will find).
All you do is flash which rom you need and if you want root simply flash a custom kernel via odin like Siyah.
Hi all I've been on this for a while, since the weekend looked at a serious amount of posts and guides on rooting and unrooting but I'm no further forward.
The problem I have is I wanted to upgrade from gingerbread to ics so I could eventually put the latest cyanogen mod on my phone. I rooted the phone no problem there flashed an insecure kernel with odin 1.85 as per the instructions from one of the guides got the CWM and superuser apps then flashed the original back, got rid of the yellow triangle every thing good so far. I did this coz I expected I had to, to put cyanogenmod on my phone.
Samsung kies says there is a update to ICS but every time I try to update it fails. Try using Odin with a stock mod and it fails. I rang Samsung and they say my build number is the up to date version. One of my colleagues has an older sgs2 and he managed to update his no problem with kies. I'm wondering if there is a problem with my phone preventing it from being updated? Also every time a look at a post or a guide it seems like that post is specific to a particular android version and I can't find one that is specific to mine such as carrier Orange, gingerbread2.3.3 as I think it's too old. PDA I9100BVKH2.
Now I'm thinking I might just try unrooting it and take it to orange and get them to update it but uprooting it to stock seems to be a pain, I need to get rid of that doing flash counter.
Do I need to go to orange or is this easy to update and I'm just missing something. Before I get flamed I did search not just here but all over the Internet to find a reason why I couldn't update but didn't get a definitive answer.

There are two ways to do this:
1. Update the phone to ICS on your own.
- Visit Sammobile
- Download the firmware for your country/carrier
- Extract the zip file.
- Flash the firmware via odin
- Boot to recovery and perform a factory reset.
done.
2. Reset your binary counter and take it to Orange!
- you can use USB jig to reset your counter.
or
- Flash a Samsung based custom rom via CWM recovery,
- Download Triangle away app by Chainfire
- Use Triangle away app, to reset your binary counter
- flash back your Stock ROM (you can also get it from Sammobile if you dont have a copy)
- take your phone to Orange.
done.
cheers
OK thanks for your help. will give it a go.
You dont need kies or orange-this is why your getting confused. You could go to sammobile and get an unbranded ics for your region/model,and to be "safe",go for 4.0.3.
Then you can flash like siyah kernel, make a nand backup, and efs backup then install whatever rom you want.

would like to try that but now odin failed after i flashed a stock rom and now i'm stuck on the samsung galaxy logo with no recovery mode. I can get into download mode though but thats it.
Odin wont flash anything exept kernels.
Seriously thinking about throwing it in the bin. Now i spend days trying to get the phone usable again. why the hell cant i flash roms WTF!
Thanks for your replies.
There's a wealth of knowledge on this forum but i cant seem to find a solution on here to get my phone back.
Ive got my phone back. used upstairs pc and flashed original insecure kernel and recovery came up. ive now done a factory reset. back to square one but at least phone is back on. guess it was the laptop i was using. What is that all about?
Looking at all the how to's on upgrading to ICS i thought if i stuck to the steps it would just work but it didn't
Thanks for every ones input.
Chris.
I was trying to root my sisters S3 i9300, until the Auto Rooting App i used, didn't work and changed the kernel(without root access available ) and now whenever i try other rooting apps it doesn't work. I think its because of the kernel change it wont let me root. So someone told me to "Get back a stable system by flashing latest firmware by Odin. If it boots normally, use cf-auto-root (by Odin, too). ".
I got ODIN 3.10.6.
Problem:How to flash latest stock S3 i9300 firmware(link would be appreciated) by ODIN?
How to then use CF Auto Root, to root my device?
A video or clearly detailed written tut would be awesome
I know is quite noobish question but YOLO?

I'm glad to help but next time, please use the forum search.
Hi! I had a question regarding rooting this phone. A thread about how to root it can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gra...ng-galaxy-prime-sm-g530a-links-t3283066/page8
But my question is if this will still work even after at&t ota updates. I really want to root this phone, but I'm trying to be cautious because I don't have a backup phone or a PC to run Odin on, unless there's some way I can flash stock firmware without a pc?
