thx, im asking that if i can root then i will get future updates of my currently specified region on S2 ? & will it will b detected by kies or i have to use odin for future updates

Kies is a crappy piece of software.
Odin or mobile Odin are much better.
You will always be able to update/restore using odin.
Simply download your firmware using an app called checkfus. (Check firmware update server)
Then flash via Odin.

what i know is you can if you stay genuine, means dont change csc modem kernel.
if you go custom you cant and changing even a csc makes you custom

as far i know if you just root without changing anything you can, but might be wrong as i really dont use kies

I thought you could also update by KIES, even if you are rooted.. unless you are on a other ROM than an original samsung ROM..
But on the other hand, you can also watch on samfirmware if there might be an update en update your SGS2 through odin, then you dont need KIES after all..

Just rooting makes no difference to kies. You will still be able to update.

From my experience if your rooted, Kies doesn't recignise it for update. Guess its depends how you root it. But IMHO kies sucks. Better of using Odin and do it manually. Less chance of stuff ups. You can reset and clear cache, then restore with titanium. I don't know how many times on here I've read people having troubles after a kies update. I always wipe and clear, never had a problem.

Unlike some Sony and Motorola devices, rooting the Galaxy S2 doesn't require you to unlock the bootloader. Other than having the "SU" program installed in the system partition, there are no other changes in the device. That is, if you take a more conservative approach to the rooting process other than flashing insecure kernels and the like. There are ways of rooting that leave your phone just like it was before - except that there is a 'su' binary in there.
Some phones won't update with KIES after rooting because some users with root privileges make changes to their device that prevent KIES from updating the phone. KIES however - and that's be written before - is a crappy piece of software. It's nearly useless - totally, actually! You absolutely don't need KIES for anything.
Installing ROMs and kernels using ODIN have nothing to do with rooting. You don't need one to make the other work. For Mobile ODIN you need root, however.
You can flash any ROM you want, including official ones, usin ODIN or Mobile ODIN. There are, however, several advantages to using Mobile Odin:
- it leaves your phone rooted after the process (if you want), even with official ROMs
- it can work with any ROM you want
- there is no need to enter download mode, which confuses some users
- it doesn't increase the flash counter
- it works from the phone, so there is no need of a computer to make it work
- it allows you to select only the part of the flash archive you want (bootloader, kernel, system, csc, etc)
Like I said, the problem some users with rooted phones have is that they go on an "uninstalling spree", and uninstall more than they should have. That sometimes renders the phone malfunctioning is some aspects. If you root, be careful with what you do afterwards regarding messing with system apps.

How do i upgrade to 2.3.4 on a rooted pone ?

I have a sgs2 and rooted it with odin oneclick... now i cant upgrade to the latest firmware.. i think it's 2.3.4 (or if there is an even newer version out now) since it's rooted, can anyone help me out how to do this upgrade (to latest firmware) the easy way so i dont loose anything on the phone.
My current kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513.........
Build number gingerbread xwke2 if this info helps..
Im would be very happy if someone would be so kind and help me with this, thanks in advance for any help.
Can you not use kies? Should still be able to use it rooted.
Root has nothing to do with KIES upgrades... If KIES says "This is the latest firmware" then it is indeed the latest firmware for your country/code... 2.3.4 is not yet released officially to many countries and country codes yet...
If you flashed somewhat BETA or custom ROM you get error like "You cannot upgrade this" or something similiar to that...
I get a error failure report, and to try using kies or something else. I tried doing the upgrade on the phone directly, checking for updates and downloading and installing, but everytime i get this error failure report
My phone is unlocked, and now i flashed it with original kernel to remove that annoying ! mark in bootup, so now i dont have a unsecure kernel any longer... but even with this original kernel now i couldnt upgrade the firmware using only the phone
Is it a must to use kies ? if so i will try it, cause i have a working kies on one computer. I just thought i could do it directly on the phone under checking for updates, but that way dont work for me.
So it does not matter if my phone is rooted when i want to update my firmware to newer like 2.3.4 or newer ?
You can just grab a stock rom from the thread in original dev and flash it via odin, kg6 is a good 2.3.4 rom, kh1 and 3 are a bit unknown at the moment.
Your best bet is to flash cf root on your phone, take a nandroid backup via it, use titanium backup or equivalent for your user apps and user app data (and some system data, as shown in green in the app) and do a full wipe, flash the new stock, and restore using titanium or equivalent.
The nandroid is a snapshot of your phone at the time, which will allow you to roll back to a known good point at any time.

No rooting wont effect kies. Try Kies first, See if indeed there is a update available to you. Like the previous poster said 2.3.4 is not available in all countries yet...
If your desperate to update you can use odin to upgrade the firmware instead..but that will wipe all data on your phone, so you will have to use Titatium Backup first. But if I were you I'd just use kies, and wait for the official update in your country.
Hmm if you can't update with KIES and you don't want to wipe then your best bet is to flash with ODIN with one of the frankenstien firmwares provided at one of the threads in the original development forum.
It did worked using kies on my computer, but it's still 2.3.3... guess it updated something minor then.
Thanks everyone for your help !
Does anyone know if i can remove the question mark in bootup and still be able to overclock the phone ?

Updates are as and when the provider of the phone updates the firmware .
They do not use all Samsung updates and often push them out much later .

Yes via the instructions in root thread
Root + CWM .

Or by using the USB jig .

I know after root i can flash with the original, but that seams to remove the possibility to overclock the device but the root are still there after flashing with original.

No you flash root then flash original wipes root .
You would be better to find an overclocking rom and work from the instructions there .

It's flashing the kernel im talking about. When rooting a phone you flash the phone with a unsecure kernel, then after it's rooted you can flash it back to original kernel so the "!" mark wont show in bootup.
Now i wounder how to do that and still keep the overclocking feature, anyone know how to do that ?

If the overclocking features are part of the kernel then flashing original kernel replaces the kernel that has the overclocking features .

[Q] do i have a rooted phone?

Hi there , hope someone can clear up this for me.
my phone was bought second hand , galaxy s 2 unlocked to any network,
the PDA : I9100XWKE1
phone : I9100XXKE4
csc : I9100XEUKD1
it shows its running android 2.3.3
kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE1-CL181974 [email protected]#2
i only ask if its rooted already as it says there is an available firmware update , but i cant do ota or through Kies, when i try it says my phone cannot update . i want to be able to update it but ideally not through rooting. ( not confident enough to do that , i'd probably brick it and cant afford to replace a £300 + phone .i owned one previously which i bought from carphone warehouse and was unlocked as i was able to upgrade ota and through Kies . so at a loss here many thanks if you answer .
Install an app from the market which requires root and see if it fails to run.
Or install root checker from the market

just installed something called root check basic which says i dont have root access , so i guess i dont have a rooted phone but am at a loss as to why it says there is a update but wont let it happen, have googled all this and there are other people out there who had identical info to my phone but sadly they too are still in the dark .
Maybe your phone has just been debranded that's why your unable to do updates via Kies, you could ask the seller what carrier the phone was on when they bought it but if I was you would just use odin to flash your roms things come out alot faster on here than Kies.
from your information given i'm pretty sure you phone is not rooted, he/she probably debranded it or installed a different rom for it
What baseband version did the phone came with? You can probably download the Stock ROM that came with your phone and get back to start
Link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278:)
I take it your not comfortable with using odin? Sounds like you might have to flash the original rom via odin or root via cf and install a custom rom via cwm. There's plenty of good guides and people to ask if you've got questions. The cf thread is a good place to start http://forum.xda-developers.com /showthread.php?t=1103399

I found it easier to just flash a ROM with root access already on it. (Lite'ning in my case) That way you then have root and clockwork, which you can then use to flash whatever ROM you so choose.
I just thought it was easier that way instead of having to do them separately.
Don't worry though, I'm sure my dog wouldn't even have a problem flashing a custom ROM via Odin for the S2. It's as simple as pointing Odin to the directory of the desired ROM, make sure no additional boxes are checked and away you go.
= What are you even doing asking whether or not you should root your phone on XDA?! =
ok i have downloaded odin and am downloading I9100XWKE1_I9100XXKDJ_I9100XEUKD1.zip XWKE1 - GT-I9100 which appears to be the latest official uk firmware. got the guide to using odin and will start tomorrow when i finish work. i understand this just updates the firmware. i assume doing this will still mean my phone runs all ok . do i have to root ? i really know bugger all about stuff like this ,

So I've rooted my phone - how about upgrading with KIES.

Hey guys,
yesterday, i rooted my phone via this method, mainly because you don't need to flash an insecure kernel.
Everything worked perfectly, and after removing lots of bloatware and changing a few things, i plugged it into Samsung KIES.
And wow, the phone is still being recognized as being on official firmware even though it's rooted. Theoretically i should be able to upgrade it via KIES.
So my question is:
Is it safe to upgrade my phone via KIES after the changes I made to the stock ROM? Should i unroot? Or is it better to flash with odin?
I would proceed flashing updates with ODIN. I never had any issues using this tool but so with KIES.
A lot of users talk about download issues while updating via KIES. This could not happen when using ODIN.
But back to your original question. I don't know if proceeding with KIES after system modifications is save anymore.
Theoretically, if you're running a rooted kernel over stock firmware, Kies should work as intended (assuming you're running firmware for your region); I.E you should still be able to get OTA firmware updates via Kies.
The real world experience on here is it seems to be about 50/50 - half people in this situation find Kies works, half don't.
To answer your questions, yes, you should be fine to have OTA updates happen. If you're running a rooted kernel with CWM, you have the added advantage of being able to do a Nandroid backup before you accept any OTA updates. Obviously if you do allow an OTA firmware update to happen, it will overwrite your existing rom & kernel and your phone will be unrooted so you'll have to re-root it.
No need for you to un-root manually beforehand, and yes, you can always just as easily flash stock firmware updates (which you can get on here, Samfirmware or via Checkfus) via Odin, which is what people who find Kies doesn't work after rooting or returning to stock firmware after running custom firmware tend to do on here.

Thanks for the reply I've used ODIN in the past, so that's not a problem. I was just impressed that my phone was still recognized after all the changes I made to it's software (removed the hubs and all that stuff, installed cwm...).
EDIT:
And thanks MistahBungle for some further clarification, I think I'll give KIES a try first then, just to see what happens And if the samsung bloatware will be reinstalled...

You can usually download firmware that's on the kies server via CHECKFUS and flash that with Odin . Just needs the correct codes inputting for any firmware .

You know what would be really good ? People posting to the correct forum(s) for their device. I don't care that Kies is common to all Samsung phones, if you're having problems with using Kies/want to use it with a rooted phone, post to AT&T Skyrocket Q&A.
(And yes, why necro a 12 mth old thread in forum for a completely different device ? :-/)
To the people who happen to chance upon this thread while searching, in the future:
The information in this thread relates to the Galaxy S2 international variant only. Even though Kies is a multi-device software, your results WILL vary as your device varies. Exercise precaution while going about it.
To avoid further necro-ing, this thread is now closed. Please search for a thread for your device to post in. If that is not available, create one in your device's Q&A fora.

Samsung's Kies software will not connect to my phone

I get the following error message:
This device is not supported by Kies 2.0
Make sure that your device is supported and try again.
And this is using the latest version of Kies.
Any ideas on how to resolve this?
I remember it started to the proccess to root my phone, but then I wasn't very succesfull with it, so I abandoned it, but otherwise it should be stock firmware (its one of the first few steps on the xda guides).
TIA

Kies cannot root your phone .
Probable buggered firmware if you tried something and stopped .
Initial try is to backup data and factory reset phone .
Fails then flash your original firmware via Odin .
Alternative use XDA to update by flashing stock firmware .

Synch then with Google
Is that the only way? Because I don't want to do it that way.
Is there a way to check if my phone is rooted? Because I'm sure I didn't complete the process, but I just need to confirm that.
Also, I think I only got as far as trying the procedure for "triangle away", numerous times, but it didn't quite work for me, so I left it.
Is there a way to "untriangle away" after checking if it was done?
TIA
you can search 3rd party backup & restore application in playstore. you can try "my backup"

Hi, I went through the same problem and fixed it.
First uninstall Kies from your PC and make sure you doesn't leave behind any files.
Uninstallation of the software and the drivers installed by Kies I suggest using Revo uninstaller to do that.
Uninstall it from your PC then make a fresh installation.
Open Kies but do not connect your phone, if it wants to update Kies, go ahead and do it.
Close Kies, connect your phone and open Kies.
That should fix it.
It happened to me when I updated Kies while my phone was connected. Do try the steps above hopefully it should help. Kies is a crappy software to be honest. Samsung should really get their act up and code a better/stable program.
If that doesn't help, then probably something went wrong while rooting. The simplest and best option would be to flash the Stock rom back on your phone. That's very simple to do.
Follow this thread to get back to stock rom [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32980712&postcount=6]
PS: The stock rom link on this thread is linked to JB if I'm not wrong, I would suggest going on www.sammobile.com/firmware and downloading the correct stock rom for your phone.
Hope I helped

Thanks.
Also, since I'm using a phone with INU region, I can't upgrade it to 4.1.1

There are apps on the play store which can check if your phone is rooted. Search for "check root".
The triangle away procedure is optional. You don't really have to do it.
It will just reset your counter so that it seems as if you didn't make any changes.
This is useful if you have to return the phone for warranty.
To backup your contacts I would also suggest to sync them with Google.
It's easier to manage your contacts via your web browser and you always have a backup.
You can also export those contacts from Google to other formats so you can import them later on other phones/programs.
Of course there are also other options... you could copy them to your SIM or use 3th party apps.
I would suggest G Cloud.
It is an app that will backup your Contacts, SMS Messages, Call logs, System settings, Pictures, ... and a lot more
You can choose what to backup. It'll back it up in the Cloud. You have 1GB free storage which is enough.
After a factory reset or installation of a new ROM you si;ply reinstall the software and restore your backup.
I only use it to backup my SMS messages. I like to keep them all.
Good luck

Even I'm on INU region. Are you from India? If so, you can't upgrade to 4.1.1 yet because Samsung hasn't updated the firmware for the region as of now. Jelly Bean is expected to arrive sometime around mid of November if not earlier. And the firmware upgrade out of the box isn't 4.1 update. Its a security patch recently released by Samsung.
I'm from India, but now I'm using this phone outside of India regulary.
I was thinking of using a SIM card from India, but I would have to cut it manually, and then also I wouldn't be sure if it was cut properly.
The firmware upgrade out of the box is for 4.0.4, which is still ICS.
Can I just change INU to another country, and then get the update? And then revert it back to INU when I need to send it in for warranty?
Also, it's surprising that Samsung hasn't released an update for INU, because I'm pretty sure it was one of the launch markets, as well as one of their biggest markets.

Yes, India is getting INU update 1st week of November or the 2nd. Samsung are market leaders here and JB updates have been confirmed.
There is a way to change from INU on your phone by changing your CSC ID. The CSC is location specific, so if you change your ID to some country where S3 has been given the JB update. You 'might' get it. Though I'm not sure of this method.
Instructions For Changing CSC:
Download Samsung Galaxy S / S2 CSC app from the Play Store
Open Samsung Galaxy S / S2 CSC app
Tap "Change CSC" button
Select the CSC for you Country
Tap "Install" button (Keep in mind changing CSC wipes your device)
I have never tried changing the CSC on my phone so I'm unsure of the credibility of the method above. Do take backup before changing it.
personally ive found kies is flawed and dont really like it

[Q] Mobile Odin Flash Procedure for Stock

Hello there,
an acquaintance of mine has bought an SGS3 i9300 (international) from Thailand but wants to use it in Germany.
The Stock Android Version is 4.04 which cannot be updated using OTA, it says none available.
As he would like to use his S3 in German, I offered him to try flashing a Stock Firmware with Region Germany and CSC "DBT".
Since we can see each other only once more and have no access to a computer at that time, I have planned a way to manage this which I would like to know about whether it may or may not work:
1.) Use Chainfire's ExynosAbuse apk to root
2.) Reset Flash Counter with TA (Is this required when using ExynosMem exploit to root?)
3.) Use Mobile Odin to Flash PDA "I9300XXELL4" and wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik
4.) Optionally change CSC to DBT, first testing with *#1234#, then changing with *#272*Device IMEI# or CSC Changer from GPlay
Finally Factory Reset in settings app.
A) Will this device then be completely Stock (expect for the wanted region change) and, in future, able to update with Kies or OTA?
Hence, with System Status Normal, Custom Binary Download No and Flash Counter set to zero?
B) Would you rather recommend not to care about CSCs and the region but choose the newest Firmware XXELLC (from Europe)?
C) Is it OK just to flash the .tar.md5 firmware package from extSDCard or would you rather copy it to the phone's internal SDCard first?
Thanks in advance, :victory:
juicer.
1. Exynosabuse (root)
2. Mobile odin xxellc
3. TA (unroot)
4. Factory reset
I won't worry too much about csc, but you will want to check the csc is one that is corresponding to the firmware to get kies updates. I never had the problem but some people report getting KOR csc when flashing firmwares..
Also check to make sure device status if official.

Thanks!
Why is it better to stick with EverRoot, thus injecting SuperSU and Root while flashing? MobileOdin itself won't trigger the flash counter if it's true what I read.
And I guess due to the fixed ExynosMem Exploit Root will just be gone?
I'm just a little scared we somehow screw it up and have no chance to fix it due to the lack of a PC... Is a brick probable?
And how about the strict update to JellyBean, is the new bootloader flashed that way and if, will it affect something?
Tbh I really can't tell you. Every device is different and as with any unofficial methods, you won't get any help from samsung if things go wrong. As for everroot, I guess you don't need to check it as you don't require root.
But do note TA Might not work without root? I'm not too sure about this. Might wanna check for somebody else's opinion on this.
As for bootloaders, you will probably want to back your apps up in case they get wiped, but you won't be able to restore them without root so I don't know what your options are.

I just wanted to report that everything worked fine, didn't use EverRoot so the device was in wiped and unrooted Stock state after flashing which was the goal — achieved it
Great to know
