Suggestions about a new android phone - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm about to change my old Desire with a new phone... but i'm very undecided on my choose.
I have no budget limit, but i want to spend well my money...
I'm interested in full ICS support that come with Galaxy Nexus, but some features don't like to me (plastic case, design, easy-to-scrath display, "old" cpu and gpu) ...
I like so much new HTC One series (especially One X) but it has too much inch for me and the nvidia soc doesn't persuade me (after have seen lg 2x problems) ...
so there is HTC One S, but here i don't like the design (much more beautiful on OneX) and to tell the truth, i like original interface of ICS, i don't want Sense also because is too "Social-print" (i don't have facebook, twitter, google+)
I'm so confused

Hmmm, Samsung galaxy s2? If your still into HTC phones maybe XE or XL.

S2 is getting old ...
maybe the best thing is to wait for S3

First your current available
Well SGS2 has the best processor of that generation, shame about the TW muddled OS. This is the only thing that lets it down.
The GalNexus is almost indentical with a bigger screen, excellent noise cancellation, processor almost as good but ecellent stock vaniila guaranteed upgrade but no gorilla glass, and micro SD card.
The HTC One X -- Quad Core, large screen, ICS, Good camera with nice features. No removable battery, no microsd card. See debate about Quad vs Dual Core to decide where you stand
For deciding phones in the future might be good

For a fair as you can find evaluation of quad core vs top dual core
http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/05/htc-one-x-vs-one-s/
Seeing as the Krait S4 performs quite well, I'd suggest the ASUS padfone as a strong contender for your purchase.
Future phones are mostly rumourer and I covered that here;

best thing to do now is wait... obviously for SGS3. That does not mean SGS3 is your best option… you should wait & then compare HTC One X , SGS3 & LG optimus 4X

I agree, if the HTC One X isn't suited for you then waiting really Is the best option.

Galaxy Nexus is getting cheaper by the second, and will undoubtedly take a further price dive after the S3 comes out (hopefully in a month or too), so that's an option. However, you said you had unlimited budget, and didn't like GN so much. (Also, it is a "last-generation" phone, though not outdated or anything.)
You never mentioned if rooting was an option. If so, you can get stock ICS on pretty much anything (I'd wait for the S3 to compare it to our current options, then). If not, your choices are far more limited (most of them not even out yet): http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/q9zvm/phones_with_stock_ice_cream_sandwich/

Either wait for S3 or go for S2 and root it. Flash ICS rom and you are golden..

Can anyone tell me what the main differences are when you compare gnexus with the stock ROM vs gs2 with rooted ics rom? The differences in speed smoothness etc

I was going to post a similar question..
My HTC Desire HD is sadly having hardware issues and I need to replace it.
I need a phone in the next couple days.
The HTC Ville was my choice, but I don't think I'll be able to wait for its release!
I'm looking for advice on Androids already on the market.
Min. Requirements:
- 4" Screen
- Dual core
- 1GB RAM
It has to be an international phone.
A qwerty (physical) keyboard would be an amazing add-on, but from my googling I don't think that is available with the above specs.
I would love to hear your thoughts.. Thanks
And for the OP.. If you could wait for the Ville, do it
Is ville better or s3

If you can’t wait then I would recommend Google Nexus Prime. If you willing to wait but not for long I would consider looking at “Galaxy SII skyrocket HD” rumors has it that it will be released sometime in March. Finally, if you can wait and you are not in a hurry then I would consider the next gen phones with quad core processors such as Galaxy SIII and HTC Ville as they are going to be some of the first phones that will come with ICS preinstalled

I just came back from the mobile shop, i played around with the nexus prime..
I really liked the screen on that thing! And ICS feels/looks great..
However, what i didn't like is:
- no sd card slot (
- 5 megapixel cam ( my DHD has an 8 and it's 2 years old)
- I've never liked the build of the Samsung smartphones.. Compared to the builds of HTC phones, Samsungs (including the nexus prime) feel like a toy in your hand; or am I the only one who feels that?
So I'm not sure whether I'm willing to sacrifice the above.
I will check the Galaxy SII skyrocket HD.. I'm not sure what to do.. I guess I'll keep on looking.. I don't wanna wish it!
Cheers

My opinion: Galaxy S2 will be a very good option, in fact, the best option before ICS generation.
Galaxy S2
HTC Sensation(XE/XL maybe?)
Sony Xperia S(upcoming)
Sony Xperia Ion(upcoming)
HI,
I recently bricked my phone trying to flash Cyanogenmod 7 on my HTC Desire S (apparently installing a rom on that phone is like running in a mine field).
It worked for an hour before totally crashing the phone.
CM7 was so amazing that I was wondering if there were any phones on which you could install it with close to 0 risks. I mean, it seems to be a piece of cake on the Nexus, but are the Samsung phones safe as well ?
Because after using CM7 I really can't stand HTC Sense anymore and I know that the HTC phones aren't the easiest one to root.
(I know that there are always some risks while installing a rom, I just want the phones with the lowest risks)
Sony Xperia S
My desire is wonderful.. but.. not NFC, bad camera, bad screen etc..
But I love it ...
one vote for SGS2.
Ville with quad? wut
Where do people read that Ville will recieve a quad-core processor?
Ville is supposed to be a DHD predesessor, with a dual-core clocked @ 1.5 GHz
whereas the HTC Edge is the one with quad-core (and this perhaps being a Tegra 3?), with 720p screen, Sense 4, NFC, 4G and international aswell.
I'm getting this as soon as available in Denmark!!

[Q] A used S2 over a HTC One S?

I was just about to pre-order the HTC One S for $600 bucks but then I started to look at used S2's and I've seen them in mint condition for $350-$400.
Are everyone out there happy with CM9 / ICS on their S2s? Should I punt on the HTC One S for a used S2?
Get the S2. If you want new device get the S3 next month.

After one year with the SGS2 I don't think I will buy Samsung anymore. don't get me wrong, the sgs2 is great hardware wise and touchwizz isn't all that bad (well the launcher is, horizontal scrolling, seriously who thought of that!? but there are plenty of replacements) but it just doesnt feel as polished as sense
i'd say go for it. mates got a htc one and its so f**kin hideous. seriously, its like it has downs. i can't believe some places are asking £41.00 per month and 29.00 down for the handset...a complete piss take.

sooo just wait for galaxy s3 it will blow away anything on the market . . im sure about that
ow shoot i forgot ONE s use super amoled too -,- but the pentlie one
I will answer for what I surly know.
And...
I was never satisfied about cm9 nor cm7 when comparing to the stock.
of curse cm good if you sacrifice some features. BUT if you want full hardware and softwar harmony, the stock is waaaay better.
if you want to be happy with cm9 you should get galaxy nexus because it's the only device trule open source.

If you're just going to slap cm9 on it then get the gs2.

wait few months for SIII but will be 300+ more
cm9 works perfect for my needs, its only in development so it will be getting better by days..
one S is now as slim and light as S2.
should have better camera.

Everyone says the HTC One S's camera is super awesome but of all the pics I've seen, the S2 looks as good and if not better in some cases.
Also, the 1080p video capture from the S2 looks great.

[Q] snapdragon s4 V.S Exynos 4212

i'm thinking of getting the Galaxy s3 but i'm having a bit of trouble deciding which one. before i continue i would like to sate a couple factor :
I have att, 3gb of data
I live in New York so i have LTE coverage everywhere
i barely use data for anything other than downloading an app, browsing the web, or watching something on youtube
i'm a major gamer so thats were getting the international one with its Exynos chip v.s the us one with snapdragon s4
So a couple of questions i wanted to ask you guys was:
Does 1gb vs 2gb of ram really make a difference and improve speed, i don't multitask a lot just like 2 or 3 apps
how good is the snapdragons 4 actually?( Give your opinion, and if you ever had lag when you used it)
How good is the snapdragon s4 for gaming, ex. GTA3, Max Payne, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, N.O.V.A 3, and if the games ever felt laggy or a little glitchy?
Also they are more developers for the international version
thanks in advance
If you are not worried too much about the LTE speeds than your best bet is i9300. Exynos 4 Quad is definitely better for gaming ... I have the AT&T variant just because I wanted to have unlimited 4G plan (grandfathered unlimited 3G upgraded to unlimited 4G now).
Also, if u have ORD then i9300 is the best choice hands down. I can speak from my own experience when I chose to get i9100 over local US variants. The amount of developer support for the international models is mind boggling. You don't get that much support (as quickly) for the US variants.
So better gaming, better developer support. I would say go for i9300 ... Hope this helps.

I have the US version and I game quite a bit. I frequently play Max Payne, Shadow gun, Dead trigger and GTA3. I don't experience any lag what so ever. I couldn't make this thing lag if I wanted to. The 2Gs of RAM makes a world of difference IMO.

For ME the development alone is the biggest reason why i went for the international, we have so many recognized devs working on so many ROM's and its nice to get the first updates as soon as they come. The quad core is a bonus, as i have never seen a hint of lag or stutter on this thing. The 2gb of ram vs 1gb of ram isnt really that big of a deal to me, phones run perfectly fine on 1gb but 2gb is awesome too. This is why i chose the I9300, its different for everybody but i love this beast.
I come to these forums a lot to see what the US version has cooking and so far it looks like things are getting ready to pick up! Task and Ktoonz (sp?) are awesome devs.
If the $600 is out of your budget, then the convo is done. I mean what else do you need people to say?
Please don't take me being blunt, for rudeness.

No problem. Trust me, your going to love it. You probably won't even want to sell it for the international version. The US version handles everything just fine. In fact, tests have shown where the S4 processor actually performed faster in some situations. Most phones can't even utilize 4 threads yet. Put simply, you get all the performance of the quad-core (and then some), plus amazing battery life. We've seen video proof of the performance. With the S4 Qualcomm has introduced a new architecture, and it's cutting edge. It's based on the same instruction set as the new ARM A15 processors, which gives it a significant advantage over it's competitors. It will do tasks faster, and more efficiently than the rest of the current generation hardware. So performance is just as good overall and battery life should be better.

Don't believe everything you hear the s4 chip is a beast. Not as good as the sammy quad but i say better than tegra. Either way a duel core phone going toe to toe with either of theses processors speak for itself. It's a notice different from last generation duel core. It handles games without a hitch battery life omg all day long . This phone isn't perfect but it's Pretty darn close. I own the evo 4g lte with the s4 chip and it runs sense4 like butter no lag get the phone enjoy it. Development isn't where the international version is because the rest of the world78% to be exact got the same phone and little usa has to have there altered to work with lte. Plus they got theres before us. The u.s galaxy s3 development will pick up fast the delays and Verizon just getting it a few days plays a roll to.

I don't care. I love rezzy either way.
No because I already have 4g and a phone that meets my requirements. I have no idea why people are talking about quad core in this thread, I haven't had any problems running anything on my Droid X even. People are acting like they are trying to play crysis or WoW on their phones, in the end they need to remember that its a PHONE and not a COMP.
I would REALLY like to know why people have the need for a quad core phone? A few answers would be greatly appreciated. Maybe dial out faster? Pick up a call quicker? All joking aside, I'd really like to know.
After owning the Galaxy Nexus i will never buy a Samsung phone again, I paid $480 for it and gave it away for free that's how terrible it is!
Plus HTC is coming out with a beast soon so i'm holding off for that
I wouldn't upgrade to a Samsung device due to the radios. I would however consider upgrading to the new HTC phablet or whatever Nexus phone is coming out this year.

Quad cores offer greater performance and also greater battery life believe it or not I'm not trying to run crysis but hate to tell you but that thing you hold in your hand is more of a computer than a phone. We want quad core and two years after that we want 6 cores... And so on. Bill Gates once said 64mb of ram is more than we will ever need now look at us with 16gb. In other words, if we stop pushing, we will never see how great this smart phone technology can be in the future
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
I have a GS3. It owns the Rezound.
Battery life is about 2x better for me. Signal is very good. Much better than the Nexus. Not quite as good as the Rez, but it is worth the tradeoff.
No lag even on stock touchwiz (which actually is pretty nice).
Thinner & lighter.
Screen VERY visible outdoors.
Meh, I like the GS3 but unless my rezound broke and I had to pay for a warranty replacement I probably won't be buying one... It's not enough of an upgrade in my eyes to spend more than an extra 100 dollars on. It's def a nice phone though no doubt about it. I liked the GS2 a lot as well, and it's still a good phone.
In reality the rezound isn't really that dated yet (eh more so on paper kind of). I mean it's not a 1XL or a GS3 but it's close enough and still has higher ppi and than both, now I'm hoping I can hold out for the next GREAT phone that Verizon gets. Like the rumored HTC phablet thing or the next Nexus if its like a GS3.5ish(or better) type phone.

-10 cool points for calling the Nexus a GS 2.5. After seeing how choppy my friends one x is, not really impressed with the s4/225 combo.
If the radios didn't suck I would. But since you're sitting on an upgrade... Wait it out and see what's out there.

I would have posted this in the GS3 forum, because you might get more replies, but that's just me
I would definitely recommend upgrading to the GS3. I have a nexus which is kind of like a GS2.5 and i like it a lot more than I did my Rezound, and the GS3 is even better than my nexus.

Why would he post this in the GS3 forums? They already have a GS3.

Convince Me: One X+ over Nexus 4 (N4)

I am planning to get a new phone and i cannot decide between the One X+ (international ver.) and the LG Nexus 4 (N4).
I want:
Extremely Smooth.
A nice UI (User Interface) to brag about.
A future proofed phone
Hard Gaming
Downloading - Wifi g/b/n optional /a
Above average battery life - lasts a day or more.
And lastly, i will not root my phone as soon as i get it - but i might think about it. But, it may be unlikely.
For:
I would get a N4. but, i hate the fact that i would not be able to get HTC's awesome widgets. - Weather...
The N4 is basically similar to Apex Launcher.
Against:
I am getting tired of the sense interface. It is very similar to Gingerbread. - which makes it kind of boring.
Nexus has the new gen specs - flagship processor, 2GB Ram..
I am actually happy with my current HTC Desire Z - rooted with ELITEMOD. But the thing which annoys me a lot is the battery life - 7-8 hours minimal use - no games.
Other phone suggestions are welcome. Not LG, GS3, iPhone.
PS. I like touchwiz, but the SGS3 is not a option.
I dislike the name LG, so it is not a option - Yes i am picky. With a exception for the Nexus series.
...A decently new phone which WILL get the Jellybean update.
Update:
If you are reading this in 2013, I recommend getting the HTC M7, Nexus 7, or if you are in the main stream get the S4, or the New Samsung Galaxy Note (not the note 2).
Rumours say the M7 n the new galaxy note will have a camera which is above 10 megapixels. Rumours also say the HTC M7 will have a tegra 4 processor.

How about the Razr HD Maxx?
3300mAh battery, so plenty for extended gaming sessions, and it is due to get Jellybean very soon. Might not be cutting edge enough on the specs front though with only a dual core S4 & 1gb ram.
I've only had my One X+ for 8 days and haven't done much gaming to be honest, but I have noticed that extended periods of browsing can chew through the battery, so gaming would run it down even quicker ( depending on your screen brightness level I suppose )
Tbh if the Razr had an lcd / ips screen I would have one now instead of the One X+ as I hate amoled screens. That was the only thing that stopped me picking one up.

Thanks, but what is so bad about amoled screens.

For me it's how they can over saturate the colours, and that whites can look more of a grey / blue colour than proper white. You do get deeper blacks with an amoled screen though.
It doesn't bother most people to be honest, and a lot of people like the over saturated look, but I personally prefer the more natural image quality & colours of a good lcd / ips screen.

Surely you know that the Nexus 4 is manufactured by LG? If LG is such a problem, why are you considering the N4?

Does the Nexus 4 have wifi hotspot, HSDPA+ (4G), and duel band (2.4ghz and 5ghz) wifi?

HTC one X+
1.7ghz Quad
Amazing SLCD 2 "best display on the market"
Jellybean 4.1 with sense 4+ on top.
8mp image sense camera (dedicated processing chip)
64GB Memory, 55 available to the user.
Nexus 4
1.5ghz quad
Decent 720p display
Mediocre camera
Very fragile glass back
32 or 16 GB memory.
Idk why you ask when the specs are all over xda. I mean the nexus 4 will be smoother, and sense is too in your face, but I'd go with the HOX+. Sorry Google, but HTC has probably the best build quality for its phones out there, no argument can be made. Samsung and just about every other manufacturer uses plastics that make the device feel cheap.

Yes, but the user is allocated with a specific amount which lowers than 16gb and 8gb (which ever the other model has)

Just to chime in
I've been kicking around the same decision re: Nexus 4 vs HOX+. Having a Nexus 7, I love the look of stock Jellybean. Not a fan of the Sense Graphics/Themes and find the look dated (as mentioned in this thread already). If there was a foolproof way to install AOSP on the HOX+ and get the Google OTA updates, that would make my decision for me. If anyone knows of this option, I'm all ears.
Not to hijack the thread or anything. If I have to start a new one, I will. But since the OP original decision making process may require this info (really reaching here) then it could be answered without a new thread subject.
On another note, the reason for my leaning to the OneX+ is: Design: the feel of this phone in the hand is second bar none. Screen: Superb. Storage: Huge and therefore, lack of SD not a concern. Second Iteration: the kinks have been worked out of its construction, quality appears very good. Camera: One of the best 8mp on a smartphone with good camera software to boot.
Negative: Software: UI Design looks old, less sophisticated to my eyes. Updates: with stock Sense 4+ they will be slow and most likely stop before updates stop rolling out for the Nexus 4 stock.
Get the HOX+ its a no brainer really!!!!! Its the best device out right now!!! Even better than the DNA. I just got mine today, coming from a HTC ONE X, this phone is perfect. Its got 64gb of storage, jb, and sense......what else could a guy want?!!!! Its the perfect device in my mind.
