You can't use bootstrap recovery to flash CM9.
Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=null for how to install cwm via Fastboot.

[Q] Having trouble entering recovery

When I try and boot into recovery, the phone simply reboots normally. I have tried reflashing and entering from adb, hboot, and rom manager with the same issue. I am running the latest ClockworkMod version, but NOT the latest update from HTC.
Can anyone help?

Power down completely and take the battery out. Put it back in. While holding the volume down button down, press the power button to turn the phone on and boot into boot loader. Go down to the recovery option by using the volume keys to navigate and the power button to select. If it reboots to your recovery, awesome. That's how you should do it from now on.
If not, I suggest downloading and using 4EXT recovery. It costs money, but not that much, and if you know where to look on the internet you can find it for free. It is the best recovery out there and worth the money. Once installed there should be no problem rebooting into recovery while the phone is on and running or getting to it through the boot loader.
I've tried the power + volume down thing, and it didn't work. I will see if I can flash that recovery. Thanks.

The recovery is probably corrupted. I recommend you download 4ext. It's (In my honest opinion) a pretty good recovery

Fast boot off?
Under settings power.
Makes your phone sleep instead of turn off and can't access recovery.
fastboot reboot recovery or adb reboot recovery.

[Q] Rooted htc evo 4g lte wont boot into Clockwork Recovery mod

HI, I'm new here.
I just recently rooted my new HTC EVO 4G LTE and installed ROM manager so that i could back up my phone. i flashed clockwork mod recovery with-in ROM manager but when i hold the power and vol down button it just boots normally.
I've also tried the vol up button as well but neither work. I'm i missing a step?
Thanks for help in advance

Clockwork mod isn't fully supported on EVO LTE.
Download TWRP recovery in the development subforum, go into downloader and flash it.
Or, just use regaws root method. Even if you're rooted, it will flash twrp for you.
Hope that helps.
Sent from my EVO using XDA
I think you can use goo manager app to install twrp as well. Then just power down and you hold volume down + power, the cap lights will flash, once they are done flashing release the buttons and press and hold them again and it should boot into the bootloader where you can select recovery. Kind of weird but it works. Also, your phone will boot normally once after you install a recovery for some reason even if you try to get in. After that you can get it no problem.
The videos in the regaw root method show everything really, really well. I suggest watching one.

how are you trying to get into CWM? Power off completely, then hold the Vol's up and down button and power button...til you see the sammy logo then release the power button while still holding the volume button til CWM appears...
I am rooted and i have cwm installed and running ics on it. And i tried to boot into recovery with vol up and power.

Okay ....hold both the volume up "and " volume down ..."and " power .....all together ...but you must start from a powered off condition ,and you must push the volume buttons first ...then the power button ....
Hold until you get a single vibration ...then release the power button .
The phone will then show the Sammy logo and then recovery ...
You can release the volume buttons "after " you see the recovery screen ......g

CWM installed but stock recovery appears
I install CWM recovery via Odin and it was successful. But when I try to boot up my phone to cwm, it boots in to my stock 3e recovery. please help . I'm running on Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
Since you are rooted, use the Quick Boot app to go to recovery from your home screen. Much easier than doing the vol up + vol down + power button thing.

No need just put the bootstrap apk a zip file and name it update.zip the power on via power button and vol down, then go to Android recovery then hit vol up.
From there go to update.zip and flash it and reboot recovery, then boom in bootstrap recovery

Hold power and volume up until it powers off. Hold volume down while pressing power. It will boot into bootloader.
Don't take this the wrong way, but if you're going to be flashing kernels, you should learn how to recover from stuff like this, first.

Yeah, that i know
So if i hard shutdown then reboot into bootloader, i can access recovery. So should i just wipe then restore?
I have a backup of the ROM before the kernel was flashed
Try fastboot erase cache that may reset things
