You can stay rooted don't take the OTA Wait till a rooted copy pops up in the dev section

Yep, as stated in multiple threads, NEVER take an OTA if you are rooted. Just wait about an hour after it comes out, and flash a rooted version in the Dev section.

Any information on this supposed update for thunderbolt.

I was recently using the drippler application and it said that there will be an update soon coming out for the thunderbolt again any word on this.
Only things I've seen are what jcase tweeted about GB OTA testing @ VZW. But I haven't actually looked for anything further detailing.

Real information or stuff i can make up to make you happy for a little bit (also called pulling a verizon)
I for once am waiting patiently for the update. It will get here when it get's here. Right now there are plenty of GB roms out there to try but at this point I am going to stick with rooted stock.
Please accept my up-front apologies for being a n00b to the rooted update world.
My assumption is that if we are running a custom ROM, an OTA update from Verizon will not help us and is not advisable.
In case of a Gingerbread OTA, are people planning on reverting to stock to take advantage of the VZW offering? Or is it only that an official GB gives the developer community better, more current source to build from?
I could be mistaken but I do not think I am. Most OTA updates have already been leaked on XDA(usually devs and other people are good about keeping there eyes open for this stuff). Also I believe that if you are rooted you will nto receive the OTA update and nothing will happen. However if you want to get it then you should unroot. But most likely(if it already hasnt happened) people will put the new OTA update on xda quite fast! Hope this helps

Yeah it gives the devs a more stable base to work from. Also from what I saw if you want to root do NOT take the gingerbread update. It closes all known exploits. And of course if you are already rooted don't take any OTAs just wait for someone to post a rooted version if you want to try it.

Rooted: official update consequences

So, what happens to a rooted phone when the official update to ics comes out? Will you be able to update through Verizon, or will a dev need to work on it first? I know there are some great ics roms out there already, but what if you wanted to try the stock update? My wife also has a rezound and she won't let me "mess" with hers.
Thanks!

use ruu and go back to stock for the update
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466474
go here and do #1~3
for #3, http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...5&postcount=58
go here and download and use this file
this one is the lastest stock ruu.
One of two options:
1. If you are already rooted, wait for a Dev to build a ROM based on the OTA so you can safely flash it.
2. You can unroot/relock your phone to accept the OTA update.
The problem with # 2 is the current methods to achieve root may not work on the updated software so it is possible to be stuck without root for awhile (unless someone finds a work-around).
The way I understand it is simple. You will be able to upgrade to a rooted is rom, however you will not be able to update the radios if you are s-on. I'm Gonna hold out. There will be an unlock tool after ics drops...whether same day or eventually.
A rooted version of the OTA rom will be released within a couple hours of the OTA.

What do I need to do to be ready for ICS OTA update?

As the title states, I'm just curious what I need to have done to be ready for the OTA update.
Currently I'm on the ICS leaked firmware, running CleanROM 4.3. Do I need to S-Off?
I would just wait until it gets incorporated into CleanRom after the official version comes out.
——— On Rezound with Tapatalk
I would think you would need to s-off so you could RUU back to gingerbread. Then you could receive an update.
You don't do anything. Let our great devs update their coding based off OTA. It's usually a good idea to not take OTAs right away. Never know what kind of hidden security patches may be included. I would hold off until you hear some news pertaining to what the update provides and if it's safe to flash.

I'm with the original poster. I would like to know if there is step by step instructions on how to unroot my phone if I need to to get the update. Or would just relocking be enough to get it? I'm currently on cleanrom de 1.2. Also, are we supposed to get sense 4.0 or 3.6 with this, or does anybody know?

I agree and wouldn't sweat it at all. Once it becomes official the devs will do what they do and we'll have plenty of options for the upgrade.
to actually answer the question that was asked, the easiest way is to just flash the leaked or stock RUU if that's what you want. you won't lose s-off, and you'll be updated like anyone else. You won't be root, of course, since it's a stock ruu. you'll still be able to flash a non stock rom later, load amon-ra, etc.
there may be a rooted stock rom out there that i don't know about that will do the same for you. i've not dug too heavily into the stock rom scene, since i prefer a rom with a lot of features.

The only thing I would do for now is to S-Off just in case this new update makes it impossible to S-Off after updating the system. As others have said you should wait until after Devs have time to play around with the OTA and incorporate it into ROMs before going ahead and flashing it.
S-off first, then just run the most current official gb ruu and don't unlock it or change recovery until after you have the ota update. I will personally wait for the official ics ruu (probably from football) and then run that and start from scratch.

so i'm on CleanRom 4.3 standard, unlocked and rooted, s-on, stock firmware.
can you get s-off from here?
this root/unlock buisness is cray maybe I need to give up..
I kinda want to be ready for the ICS OTA but I guess I might as well wait for CleanROM to be updated. But then am I going to need s-off at all ever?
what do
Since you didn't do the Leak, You don't need S-OFF. if you don't want it.
Just wait until the Dev releases it and forget about the OTA.

I'm on the leak also I'm hopping it isn't like the the Eris or Incredible leak, which ever it was. To many phone's to keep track of Lol.

[Q] Install ICS OTA Update Rogers

Hey guys, the OTA update from rogers HTC Evo 3D ICS has been released and i would like to up date my phone. The problem is that im running LeeDroid_3D_V5.4 and it doesn't seam to have a software update option in the settings menu.
So my question is, for me to get this update, must i restore my phone back to the original software using the Rogers RUU that i have downloaded?
Thanks, Peter
I am in the same boat here.
Everyone always says when you have root you shouldn't update your phone, just wait a little while and the devs will upload a version that you can flash without losing root.
Well I have yet to see this happen, it has been like a week since the ICS update and all the devs are using a still updating roms with a cluster**** of random leaks and bases.
Can someone just upload the stock rogers ICS rom so I can flash it without losing root and not having to flash back to my stock RUU?
I mean if we have all these versions of the official rom why are you guys still using leaks at all?
Check out Virtuous Shooter, it's pretty close to stock and most of the changes are performance related anyways.
PS A lot of the ROMs aren't using leaks anymore...

From my understanding, to take the OTA, you must relock your phone and then run the RUU. I would just wait until one of the talented devs builds a ROM based on the OTA because it will be much better anyway.
Ok. Thanks a lot everyone for there imput , I am thinking ill just hold out untill a stock Rogers ICS is released rather then do all that work to just have to reroot and probably end up installing another ics Rom over it anyways. I'm thinking this will be by King Cobra Roms as he always dose stock roms, so ill see what he comes up with. I am really looking forward to features in 4.0 and 4.1 . So hopefully they can get there buts in gear , put out a nice Rom, and ill buy them a few coffees and a pizza Thanks again everyone , have a good one !

Already rooted 1.13.651 but wanted to update to 1.22.651.3

I have already rooted using RagawMod. My question is if I update software to 1.22.651.3 will it mess up root access or should I unroot then update software and re-root?
Thanks in adfvance for any help
If you do the ota update Yes it'll mess up root. Why not flash a custom rom that's based on the new update?
NEVER unroot in order to take an OTA.
Also, get full S-OFF while you still can.
In order to upgrade now that you are rooted, you flash a custom ROM. Thats it. Don't take the OTA, don't unroot.
RE-root
The reason I asked is I just saw the have a new root for the new OTA 1.22.651.3. Was not sure if the new OTA fixed some of the bugs with the LTE?

What root are you referring to? All I'm aware of is HTC dev, and thats not what you want to use. Get full S-OFF while you can
Flashing a ROM that's based on the new OTA will give you all of the fixes of the OTA without screwing up your device.

What are the pro's to updating? I just got my EVO a couple days ago and its on 1.13.651.1 71ORD. I won't be getting any OTA's because I plan on rooting and getting full s-off. I still need to read the forums a little more before I do any of that. I've never flashed ROMs before so if that is the only way to update then I might hold off on that for now, unless there are some good reasons why I need to do it.

I am a new user here, but I am already rooted with 1.22.651.3. I completely regret OTA'ing simply because I find it confusing how to achieve S-Off while having this updated version. I've been exploring the developer section and I have really fallen in love with MeanROM, but I cannot get it as my phone does not have S-Off.

Still not sure why I would want the update after I root and get s-off. All I really want to do at the moment is root so I can delete all the sprint garbage and get rid of sense. I know doing the OTA is a no-no, but is there anything I should think about doing after I root? Can anyone recommend the best way to go about that? I'm basically a new, but I want to make sure I have the ability to mess with my phone down the road.
