[Q] Unlocked with HTCDev - Unable to flash ROM - Legend Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone has been unlocked via HTCDev. I have Hboot 1.02. It is showing 'Unlocked' in purple in the boot screen.
I ran HTC Super Tool V3 options 1 (passed all steps successfully) and 3. I did receive message 'Rooted'.
I have checked if this was correct by typing command 'su' in adb shell. I received message 'permission denied'.
When I try to flash update-cm-7.1.0-Legend-signed.zip from SD card in ROM Manager v5.0.0.6 I get 'An error occurred while attempting to run priviliged commands!'
What do I do wrong?

After root try to open titanium backup then fix permission of su.
Then flash the recovery in fast boot mode.then restart in recovery mode with rom manager. Flash a new rom through recovery

Like I mentioned I have already run HTC Super Tool V3.
HTC Super Tool says I have root, but it just isn't rooted.

What about using the s-off method to flash CWM?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290841
And then simply install the rom zip from there? No real root is required then.

That worked! Thanks very much Pepijn!
I used recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-legend.img though boot screen is still showing S-ON.
I managed to flash update-cm-7.1.0-RC1-Legend-signed.zip. It's rooted, didn't have to do anything extra to root my phone.

flyer with offficial hc ota htc unlock

Hi I've been doin a lot of reading of this forum. My main question is can I install a no sense hc Rom from just performing an HTC unlock or do I need to downgrade to gb anyway in which case I may aswel go s off while I'm at it.
I'm running hc official ota
There is no true no sense rom available as of yet
ok but if i just used the htc unlock could i then easily flash the new virtuous rom which has just started been developed?
Problem is i cant find the correct ruu to downgrade my device, its a uk 16gb wifi . I thought id found it but the site wont let me download.
You should be able to flash clockwork, then a custom ROM through fastboot without downgrade and root.
Haven't done it myself, but that is my understanding of how the unlocked bootloader works versus real S-Off.
I managed to do this hardware unlock and now have an unlocked bootloader. Tried. To flash cwm and corrupted the recovery. How do you install CWM through fastboot?

You have get CWM recovery, go into fastboot, connect USB, and then install via command prompt.
If you are unaware of how to do this try installing recovery via Rom Manager. Might be your easier solution.
Thanks for the reply, I actually downloaded cwm from a post in the dev section. Flashed it through command line with fastboot and now when I boot from recovery the device is stuck on a white HTC screen.
Also tried to use Rom manager but the device has to be rooted first. Can you root it through fastboot without cwm? Can I get a download link for a working cwm?

[Q] Root EVO 3D with 1.5 Hboot

I currently have S-Off 1.5 Hboot on my Sprint Evo 3D with 2.17.651.5 HTC Software Release. I am having problems rooting the phone using the Revolutionary rooting method. When I run Revolutionary.exe, I get an error message that says my "Shooter" is not supported at this time. Also, when I try and follow your instructions via cmd command propt, I can't seem to access the "rootevo3dnew" zip file I downloaded from "HTCEVOHACKS website. Please help!!!

There is a difference between unlocking the bootloader and gaining root access. If you're device is already s-off, as stated above, there is no need to run revolutionary again to unlock the device as the device has already been unlocked.
The next step after unlocking the device is seting up root access in the respectively loaded ROM, generally the stock ROM.
A common approach: you can either flash a custom recovery, which can then load the superuser .zip file and setup root access in the currently loaded stock ROM, or you can flash a custom ROM through the custom recovery which contains root access already setup.
Hope that helps clarify some of the possible confusion!
This does help. How do I flash a Custom Recovery? When I go into Fastboot and choose Recovery, the phone just locks up and I can't go any further...can you please send instructions?

Directions are posted all over the forum in many different guides and threads.
There are multiple ways of accomplishing the same end goal. If you're interested in finding the easiest method for you, might need to do some research.
The method I would personally use would be the command: fastboot flash recovery c:\recovery.img .
The advantage to this route is the fastboot flash command will permanently load the custom recovery in the recovery partition so when you follow the steps you outlined, boot into the bootloader and select recovery, the recovery will load.
Hope that helps!
I will try this and see if I can get it to work. It appears I'm doing something wrong on my computers 'cmd' command prompt...I keep geeting an error.
I was able to finally get into cmd command prompt using Revolutionary.exe and it tells me that my Hboot 1.5 is not supported. Is there another way to flash custome recovery image?

Reboot into Amon Ra recovery go to the developer menu and install su super user.
Sent From My Optimized Blasting 4GLTE ReZound
tried that
thanks for the prompt reply, I've tried that. I bought the superuser elite before i installed the rom, and I also ran the superuser patch fixer. It does not seem to match up. I fixed the permissions in recovery.
Superuser cannot update, it states that I am not rooted. Once the database is contacted it states there is a permissons error
Is there a way to switch from ra to clockwork?

Was this issue ever resolved, because I am going through the same thing...Unlocked, rooted, Amon-Ra recovery. And have installed su through recovery, and have uninstalled su, reinstalled it, uninstalled tb and reinstalled, and done the same with bb.
Terminal emulator gives me $ at prompt instead of #...what gives?
tmettler5 are you looking to check your phone if it is rooted?
Someone link OP a SU.zip, I had to do that as Amon RA's root didn't stick for me.
Once I flashed the superuser zip, never had an issue again.

TRY THIS
1)Make sure that htc sync is disabled and try this
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ky4ckwpdqzyw3x1 and put your unlock code.bin file in the tools folder.
Now follow the intructions when you run the program.
2)Install amon ra http://www.mediafire.com/?l9dgzvvsdku7g3c by downloading file and click save as to your android folder on the C drive that you used to unlock the bootloader. Next rename the file recovery. Next go to the HBOOT menu and fastboot usb open cmd and type commands push enter after every command.
cd..
cd..
cd android
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
NOTE THE RECOVERY BOOT USED IS AMON RA 3.14
3) reboot and very important to make a back up.
I think I got everything hope this helps.

On an assumption; If you are running the stock kernel. It is secured, meaning won't allow su in terminal. Either flash the stock unsecured kernel or try a custom rom.
@OP
Is this still a problem for you?
I am using the stock kernel that came with the leaked RUU. I am trying to install su using amon-ra 3.15. If I am reading correctly, if I install a custom rom, that should fix it, right?

Should. Alternatively you could invoke "adb shell" then an "su" command from a PC, if you have ADB setup properly.

[Q] Rooted, but can't install clockwork recovery

After reading the comments from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614304, I decide to root my phone today.
I followed the tutorial on HTC dev to unlock hboot1.2, then downloaded HTC supertool v3, did prep and root, and it appeared the rooting was successful. I installed [Root Checker](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&hl=en) and it confirms that my phone is rooted. Then I went ahead installing ROMManager, from it, installed Clockwork Recovery, granted superuser permission, put CM7.1 ROM on the sdcard, reboot into recovery, met red triangle with exclamation mark, held power+vol_up, get the system recovery <3e> menu, tried to apply sdcard:update.zip (which is the recovery image for Clockwork recovery), but it complained "failed to verify whole-file signature"...
Have been stuck for a few hours, after much googling and retrying, not much luck...I wonder if the phone is rooted after all? Someone here suggested HTC supertool (which I used) but I didn't see Legend being one of the supported models. Also, all the rooting tools download links I found aren't valid any more.
Help is much appreciated.
EDIT: I think the rooting is successful. I installed a few root only apps from the Play store and they all worked.
Hi,
I faced the same sort of problem when I rooted and wanted to install CWM. My solution was to manually flash the recovery img file using adb. I'm on my phone now so its hard for me to get the link but if you search for the HTC Legend Cyanogenmod Wiki page there are instructions on how to do this
Sent from my Legend using XDA
If you've used htcdev to unlock you CANNOT use update zip, to go into clockworkmod recovery, You have to use the s-off method. This has been covered many times now esspecialy in the hboot 1.02 thread.
Just as a point of note, you can't flash recovery from the clockwork mod app, you have to do it manually via s-off method.

just put cwm recovery img in the same andriod folder that u use to unlock bootloader via fastboot and use fastboot to push recovery img and after that use cwm to install superuser zip from sd card, install titatium backup, it will say u are not rooted don't worry press 'problem' i TB and it will install busybox for u . that's it .Now u are rooted with cwm u can flash anything u want. Hope this hekps.
here's the link/instruction for the clockworkmod image to flash - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290841
as it was already said, use the s-off method

No, actually you don't just push recovery.img file you have to fastboot flash recovery recovery.img too other wise you can't boot into custom recovery.
please check the official clockword mod recovery thread for the compleat, correct method and command line string.

So I used fastboot to push cwm recovery and everything worked. I had the impression that i need s-off before doing that but it was fine with s-on. I flashed cm7.1 and now i'm typing this reply on my "brand new" legend. It gave the old phone so much life!
Thanks everyone for helping

What it sounds like you are doing is pushing the update.zip to the SD card, this ONLY works with locked s-on bootloader what the op is talking about is hboot 1.02 s-on with unlocked bootloader, this is basically s-off function, bootloader will not load the update.zip file.

I have read all the instructions... Got root access also, installed clockworkMod recovery via the manual installation (s-off) method.. It is installed i can navigate through the clockworkMod recovery menu. However, pressing the power button to select a option brings me to a next page... No options, first i thought it was doing its job (wipe cach) however after a few moments i pushed the power button and i was in the main menu again. Also the reboot option or power off option it brings me to a triangle with mark and nothing...
Can anyone help me with this one?

Install TWRP Failing Through GooManager

I just completed S-off sucesfully and installed goomanger > selected install openrecovery script. It downloaded openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-fireball.img. I than got a pop up saying recovery has been installed. I than selected reboot recovery and got a pop up saying, "by clicking yes, your phone will request root and reboot to recovery. I selected yes, it says "attempting to reboot recovery, if this fails you may want to perform the operation manually". Nothing happens after this, I just get taken back to the goomanger main menu. Am I missing something or does this not work?
Thanks for the help, as I am fairly new to android, just coming over from the iphone 5.

Did you root the phone after s-off? You will need to flash superuser after DirtyRacun. Once you have root installed, goo manager should be able to install the custom recovery.

Flash one or the other of the following (but only one):
1. SuperSU (XDA Thread)
2. SuperUser (website)
Installing SuperSU from the Google Play/Market should be easiest.
If that doesn't work, you may need to install the custom recovery via fastboot first.
Once a superuser package is installed, goomanager should work for you.

Could always flash the image manually through fastboot if you have the drivers/knowledge. Rename the recovery to recovery.img and put it in the same folder as the fastboot executable. fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
There's an order of operations that need to be followed. 1) recovery 2) root or ROM.
You can't use an automated recovery installer unless you have root access, and you can't get root access until you flash the su binary or a ROM with su included (which requires a recovery... see the circle?). Thus, the automated installer is not an option for the very first recovery flash. Similarly, the superuser applications on Play require that you have an su binary already... they just manage access to that binary by other applications.
Follow the manual instructions to flash TWRP, they're really quite easy. If you performed S-OFF, you have the fastboot (and adb) binaries already.
Edit: I have updated the instructions in the TWRP post to reflect this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Think I figured out, trying now. I think I downloaded the wrong recovery. Should have grabbed the fireball version.
Thanks for everyones help. I almost there. I just manually installed open recovery-tarp-2.4.1.0-inc.img and I got the following
sending recovery 93700kb)... OKAY
writing recover recovery ... OKAY
I than tried booting into the recover with the following command
fastboot boot recovery recovery-tarp-2.4.1.0-inc.img
I than got the message "cannot load 'recovery'
Anyone know where I should go from here?

Follow the manual instructions more closely. You don't want to 'fastboot boot ...'
Also, recovery-tarp-2.4.1.0-inc.img is not the right recovery.
I've got it working. I realized I had the wrong recovery a few minutes later. Thanks for all your help.
