How to share 3G connection from XPS to laptop? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Dear guys,
I am wonder if you guys can help me about Internet sharing from XPS to laptop via usb cable. Can I use the tethering function in setting or else?
Best regards

i never relied on inbuilt tether function. i always used this
its pretty easy to setup & no rooting is required. till now i used with almost every kind of android version & with tablets also.

Easiest method I've found is to set up a wifi hotspot with the phone and use that.. No cable required!

In option enable hot spot, connect your laptop wirelessly to phone and that is that.
Easy.

I'm just now using the built in USB Tethering with Debian, works like a charm.

Wifi tethering is easy. I use it all the time with my Asus Transformer tf101 wifi. It is very fast.

Doesn't that suck battery like hell on both devices?

You can use the wifi tether to share the connection. It is really easy to set up and no cable is required. The drawback is that it causes heavy battery drain. USB tether is also working fine. You will need cable to do it but this way you can even charge your battery while browsing. See what works better for you and use it.

My network prohibits tethering, but branded .62 has the feature inbuilt. So the question is, can they detect it?

You might want to consider the huawei e586 wifi hotspot. It can support 5 devices on wifi. Just add your 3g data sim card.

i have the concept of wifi hotspot (sharing the mobile data via WiFi), but it is different from tethering. The only way to get WiFi tether is to use apps that require root access?
Thanks!

i am on vodafone italy,
for the "normal" internet usage from the smartphone i use this APN: mobile.vodafone.it
for the tethering i should use this APN: web.vodafone.it
using the smartphone as hotspot wi-fi it not goes to "web.vodafone.it" but through "mobile.vodafone.it" only sharing the smartphone’s normal network
i notice this since with mobile.vodafone.it i pay 0,30€/100mb
with web.vodafone.it i pay 1€/500mb
yesterday i used my Xperia S as hotspot wi-fi and after the 100mb of usage i received an sms from vodafone telling me i used all my data.
Maybe this is only an italian thing or italian-vodafone-thing

yes, i understand this.
but maybe my provider has some problems: yesterday i did usb tethering via "easy tether" and i payed NOTHING using the apn: mobile.vodafone.it ...it is possible that the provider didn’t recognize my tethering activity neither the network access?

[Q] How to do tethering/hotspot outside AT&T? APN settings?

I am still learning android...
I want to use tethering on my carrier in Venezuela, but when i try to enable hotspot it says i'm now allowed should call at&t and such... I know tethering and hotspot isn't the same, but i want to do the following:
-Enable personal hotspot on the phone to allow my laptop to connect to it and get connection (if somehow my home adsl connection drops and my phone is ok)
-Enable tethering over usb, so the battery doesn't suffer while being connected
I had to add my APN manually, a friend with the motorola milestone told me the apn name and settings and apn type is set on: default, dun
What are the possible values for this setting? I know from the tethering mod that it could be: default, agps, fota, supl, fota, tether. By the way we don't have tethering plans down here, do i still need this tethering mod? Because i haven't installed it.
would appreciate any input from you guys. I have searched google and there doesn't seem to be much info about apn types

For WIFI tethering, have your phone rooted and to where you can side load, and try this: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
or this http://www.mediafire.com/?yzerk3nglqof1kk
(Not sure if the'll work because they didn't for me, but they did for other Atrix users)
And for USB tethering, thats easy, and for sure works. Try either Easy Tether (my favorite) : http://www.mobile-stream.com/easytether/android.html
Or PdaNet: http://www.junefabrics.com/android/
I managed to get this to work. I basically turned on hot spot then it loads up ands says connecting or something similar. Now put phone in flight mode. Then take out of flight mode. It should now connect. Worked for me. Im in the uk on hutchinson3.

Real USB Tethering on Stock ROM for our Defy!!

Hi guys!! I've just tried this app and it works great!
It can share your Defy's internet connection to your pc!
It's a real tethering not a simply MODEM Tethering, you will NOT pay extra cost to your Carrier!
I read about it here on xda:
Moto Tethering USB
See ya!
The default build-in USB tethering is working fine. Why would one need another 3rd party app to run?

As you can see from App description:
** Moto Tethering USB uses exactly the same data plan that is used for the on-phone Internet access like in the built-in browser or e-mail app or youtube application. No additional tethering fees.
The built-in function acts like a modem that can be intercepted by your Carrier to make you pay additional costs for your current connection!
cu,
I'm not sure if anything you say is correct. But I'm on unlimited data plan which also comes with voice, MMS, SMS and etc.. I've been using the build-in USB tethering as well and Wifi hotspot for over a year and none have any extra charges from my carrier.
I do USB tethering with my Laptop and Desktop. Share my Wifi Hotspot with my friend's phones and all working as it is..
I don't see the need of this 3rd party apps unless your phone doesn't have the default USB tethering and 3G Wifi Hotspot build-in.

[Q] make telephone think its connected to Wi-fi while using 3g data

hi...i usually connect my lg optimus 2x to PC with USB and use computer's internet connection (reverse USB teethering). but i want to know if its possible to force telephone that it thinks that it is connected to wi-fi, while using 3g data connection. i want use that especially when games want to download data over the wifi...
If your device is rooted, you could get a wireless hotspot app from the market, start the hotspot on your phone, then connect to it (connect your device to itself ).
I don't think you can connect to your own hotspot.

Actually you can. I've said that before to other people who wanted to download gameloft data and for some other purposes which require wifi, and it worked.
I want to do this too.... but the Mobile Hotspot app on my phone turns off WiFi if it is one, and if I turn on Wifi while Mobile Hotpsot is on, it disables the Hotspot.
Any other solution ? An app maybe ? A tweak ?
what wifi hotspot app was used?.. and to the OP, how did you reverse tether via usb?

On my desire you can have activated only wirelles or only hotspot, i think the same wirelles adapter is used for it, so it wouldnt be possible.

How? I've been searching for a workaround to this for some time now.
Please tell me how...
I have a rooted Bionic, Eclipse ICS 4.0.4. I use FoxFi Full version for my hotspot. I need my phone to connect to the mobile hotspot it's currently transmitting. (I think that's what I need)
Why? I want an advanced ability to monitor who is using my mobile hotspot, using DroidSheep to monitor what they're using the connection for. Trouble is, DroidSheep (And al similar programs) only work if the phone (with the app) is actually connected to the wifi network. It won't work if it's the one transmitting the signal.

You just have one wifi Modul it can be a hot spot or it can be connected to a Router.
Both together isn't possible.
Else you could also use it as wifi repeater

That would be awesome, you could have a wifi router everywhere with you (as long as you don't forget to take the usb cable with you), just connect with the usb to a PC that has broadband, and then use the phone's wifi as a dongle.
I am currently in a situation that i would use something like that seeing that i have forgotten my dongle at home.
phone tether
There are a couple of different ways to tether your phone to your pc. One way is to use an app called PDA net, you can get your phone and computer setup through their website in about 2-3 minutes, super easy to use and you don't need to root your phone, the down side is unless you pay for the pro version all "https", secure sites, will only be accessible for a week. If you decide to root or have already rooted, you can download a number of different apps that give you the ability to use your phone as a hot spot without paying monthly to your provider.

=> use this app called FoxFi..its not on the google store..download it from internet..with this u can use the connection to tether via bluetooth in all devices..though, wi-fi routing works only in few..if it doesnt work..then first try this app to reverse tether(Reverse Tether build.2012.04.05.paid - torrents) and then use FoxFi..reply if it works or not..
AT&T detected my foxfi tethering and will now charge me for a 5g tethering package if I continue to use it. Greedy.... What does it matter if I tether? Bunch if nazis...

Tethering with Galaxy S3

Hello all,
I currently have the iPhone 4 and I hate it. I want to move up to the S3 but the only thing preventing me puling the trigger is tethering.
Currently I have a jail broken iPhone and MyWi installed for free tethering. Is there an alternative to MyWi for the S3? Can a rooted S3 be a WiFi hotspot (Infrastructure not AdHoc)?
Thanks in advance,

Rooting an android phone allows you tether without most carriers noticing.
Depends on carrier also

Ok, awesome answer!
Here is another question. Is there a TuT out there to root and tether? Is it AdHoc or Infrastructure? I need infrastructure as my stock Nook can not connect to AdHoc.
Thanks in advance.
Open Garden Tethering is amazing for a rooted phone. Kinda slow (but that's because my LG Ally is slow, and it only has 3G)
My phone has tethering built in as stock and yes it is infrastructure. My phone is from the UK if that affects your question
Some carriers in some countries like to remove or restrict the tethering option. If you're not in such a country then tethering ie. Portable Hotspot is available by default in Android. There is not need to root or install any special app.
When activated your phone will appear as a regular wireless network, ie. infrastructure.
@JSale i am awesome?
in addition we've set up a network on a demonstration with 10 sgs3 on the same tethered connection, so clients number is not limited to 5 like it was on sgs2

I think it may. Knowing the nickle and dime mentality of the US Carriers, I can see them disabling that function in the OS.
If it is built into the OS and then disabled by the carrier could a Rooted Device be re-enabled?

Has anyone had any issues with tethering with the S3? Used to have a GalaxyS on the Three network and it was fine. Got the S3 and it constantly drops net access. Connection between the phone and my laptop is fine, but there are issues with DNS server etc. and on the same network. had a new handset yesterday after advice and help from Three and Samsung and still the exact same issue.
They seem clueless. Does anybody have any idea what the issue could be and has anyone else had the same problem? Tethering via wifi hotspot or usb cable is the same.
Sorry, maybe I should mention that tethering is allowed on my plan.
Does anyone have any idea at all please?
anybody? anyone else had this issue?
i'm having issues with tethering.
If i set security to open it seems to be ok. With any level of security my windows 7 pc cannot connect via wifi.
i've read comments on other forums regarding problems with this.
I've not been able to test out my S3 tethering on 3 yet. Have you had any luck since? I have noticed that the connection while surfing on the phone keeps dropping though.

If you use an International Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) on AT&T you can tether for free anyway. You can also get away with paying $10 a month for Unlimited Internet.
No need for root. Tethering is already built into the menus.
Had to return the phone and cancel my contract in the end. Three uk say it's a software issue with samsung. I have flagged it with samsung.

Wireless tethering (called portable Wi-Fi hostpost in the settings) worked fine on my international unlocked phone out of the box (no rooting, installing apps, etc.). I'm a bit frustrated I can't connect to AdHoc networks though, but that's an android issue. At least I found a way to use my home computer's internet on the phone via usb with 'reverse tether'.
Tethering the S3
I seem to be having the same problem when tethering using the security option under ONLY ALLOWED DEVICES,
Security is configured under WPA, WPA PSK, and WPA2PSK, i get as far as adding these settings to the ALLOWED ONLY LIST, but when you go to connect on the Wi-Fi screen, and where it says Only Allowed Devices, it says NO DEVICES,
And so the only way to make it works is by using the OPEN option, but be warned this will allow outside users to tap in to your network.
Contacted Samsung on three occasions up to today, all they would confirm was that using the OPEN setting would compromise your security, ive asked them to confirm that the security Only Allowed option does actually work in real time , ive asked them to configure it at their end and tell me the step by step method.
will report back what they say.
I did take the phone back to the shop to get them to configure this secure setting, they failed and said try and cope with the open setting for now.
Reading the above posts that Three have said its a software problem doesnt sound good, sounds like im going to have to return mine as i do internet banking.
any news that you guys have on this aspect would be wellcome.
Cheers,
PS, i should say i am tethering to a Sony Vaio windowes 7
