A factory reset removes ANY data that is not 'pre-installed' by the rom.
Basically, its as if you just turned your phone on for the first time but instead of with the rom that came with the phone, it is with the rom you have installed.
You do not loose root because what actually is giving you root is code added to the kernel (hooks) and since the kernel is part of the system, it cannot be reverted to its original state, any changes made to the kernel will remain after a factory reset (Android at this time does not keep multiple backups of system files like Linux or Windows does - sometimes called shadow copies).
If your rom did NOT come with SuperUser pre-installed, you can simply redownload it from the market (if you were rooted).
One other thing, a factory reset also removes any cached data (davlik for example) as well. This is why it takes so long for the phone to boot after a factory reset or after installing a rom that does a wipe before installing (the phone has to rebuild the davlik cache when it reboots which takes some time).
If you are interested in specifically what a factory reset does and does not do, I recommend asking Google, its a very informative resource.
I'll just toss this out there; I got my phone a few days ago, and it was pretty sluggish on stock TW; adding ADW ex didn't help a lot, so I did a factory wipe reset yesterday, and it fixed things right up!
Did it to my wifes phone too, and it fixed a few little issues she was having too..I read some posts saying that it should almost be mandatory to do a factory wipe when you first get this phone, which i thought was weird, but, proved beneficial for both of our newly acquired Notes...
Absolutely, Android is alot like windows, it begins to just start performing badly. Typically, a simple reboot fixes things but one in awhile, a factory reset doesnt hurt.
So how do you do a factory reset????

How do I do a full factory wipe of my phone? I know you can go into privacy and do a factory reset but that is for data only isn't it? I want to make the phone how it came in the box. I was rooted and had the lag fix installed but I have undone both in preparation for this. Thanks.

You will have to flash it with odin to get back to full stock. why do you need it back to stock?
You can do a "factory format" not a factory reset, and this will erase all data and restore to factory settings. Download my service menu program in my signature to do this. Otherwise do what the last poster did and reflash with odin.
phone seems slower in general than when I got it a few weeks ago, wondering if I messed something up playing with it. also I have a lot of fails when texting. just want to get it back like it came then start over.

If it was me I would do a Clockwork recovery of the stock rom. Im a little afraid of Odin due to all the bricks I have seen on the forums involving Odin (plus im on a Mac). If you are not returning it to Tmobile you could also try one of the roms that are posted in the forums. I would recomend Bionix or Frankin-twiz. Both devs are spot on with thier roms.

Just do a factory format, all the other methods listed are complicated
Go to dialer and dial in:

thats it, it will format your device and set it back to factory.
you can do a soft reset by dialing in

tried that it erases all your data and settings but doesn't restore anything you have removed. will most likely use clockwork then.
What I want to do:
Fully delete my personal data and go back to relative square one, preferably with stock 2.3.4.
So what's wrong?
I can't wipe data. I try through the privacy/factory reset route and through cwm and both ways it doesn't work.
I think the problem started after I tried the Ninja rom. I remember being surprised that it didn't wipe data going into it.
I even tried to format the data folder through the storage menu in cwm. It gave an error and wouldn't do it.
Any ideas?

Sorta fixed
I sorta fixed the problem. In case someone else has the same issue, here's what I did...
I RSDlite flashed the 2.3.4 file found here.
From there I used the factory reset from the privacy menu and all was right in the world again.
Of course, I've got to re-root and my recovery menu isn't working right, but I'm guessing I'll just need to re-install them from scratch.

if I factory reset my phone it will work again. Question is, Will I lose root if I factory reset my phone.. Thanks

If only one app is having issues I'd uninstall and reinstall the app. Factory Data Reset is really a "last resort" sort of thing. And the main thing it does for you is to uninstall all the apps you've installed and then reinstalls them.
Why not just wipe the application data for Watch ESPN? As far as Factory Reset, it wipes /data and /cache. If you're using stock recovery, this will include the internal SD card, so pictures, videos, etc. that you have taken will also be wiped.

The idea of factory reset can be quiet confusing in android. The word "factory reset" is fancy enough to trick you that it will restore everything back to where it was...but all it does is just clearing stored cache, data, and etc etc., and it does NOT promise you anything. In lots of circumstances, damaged system or installed apps can't be restored, and they are ended up getting firmware flashed by manufacturer (some Verizon stores do flash firmware but many don't). Let's say you're rooted and removed all the bloats using system app remover. That's not going to restore your bloats to where it was....and you'll be rejected from receiving OTA update.
To get back to your question, "Will I lose root if I factory reset my phone?" I think it really depends on how you rooted. I think if you rooted your phone by flashing rooted image, then probably not. But if you use ADB shell to root your phone, you may lose your root.
Try to clear your cache and see if it works again.....I think that's the best way.
I agree you probably don't need a factory reset here. But no you will not lose root. Root is custom binaries inside the system that will not be touched. Depending how you installed your super user app I guess you could lose that, but you who's just have to download one

just got this modded Atrix from a friend. i think it is unlocked, cause its now running a custom ROM (dont know what it is though). it's also rooted now. well i dont want to go on and mod this phone myself for now cause im still studying how to.
i want to do a factory reset, cause of the google account. i cant get to remove it's sync. when i try to press remove account it just says i need to do factory reset cause some apps still uses the account. question is, what will happen if i reset my phone? will it become locked again? or may unrooted?
sry for the noob question.
What rom is it running? Technically, a factory reset is just a soft reset that deletes user data etc., and doesn't unroot your phone.

The boot animation could provide some hints as to what ROM is installed. Settings > About is a good place to look too. As for other questions, I think you need to do a LOT more reading and learning. You seem to be confused about several aspects of a phone that have absolutely nothing to do with each other. For example: factory reset, lock/unlock, root - none of those have anything to do with the other. Next, you keep saying "lock" or "unlock" but you don't specify WHICH lock/unlock (yes, there are several).
In short - you can do a factory reset without any worries, and then you should probably get on to reading about concepts and terminology of an Android phone (since a lot of this is actually not even Atrix-specific).

well i was talking about the unlocked bootloader dude, sorry for the noobness. haha. anyways i'm not that new to android phones. i've never done a factory reset before, that's why i've asked this silly questions. later i'll post my ROM. thanks for you reply sir.
Just the other day I had a weird thing happen. I rebooted my phone and when booting I saw Android is updating, followed by optimizing apps and starting apps. I had not run any update of any kind at all. The phone booted fine and ran fine afterwards. Now everytime I reboot the phone, I get the same message Android is updating then it says starting apps and then the phone boots up as normal. Anyone know why this is happening? Is this a problem? I had a similar thing happen on my tablet and when I ran a firmware update afterwards then started getting all kinds of errors.
If this is a problem how do I fix it? And with this happening should I not run any updates?
I am rooted and on stock firmware with no updates installed.

This happens when cache is cleared, anytime you flash a ROM or kernel you are supposed to wipe cache and most packages will do this for you. Your tablet doing this after a firmware upgrade is normal, the errors weren't.
Now if your phone is doing it every reebot it probably means one of two things: 1 your system is wiping cache every shutdown for some reason or 2 your cache partition is corrupted.
If you are unrooted I recommend talking to Verizon (or whomever you purchased it from) about warranty, if its rooted I would try wiping cache and dalvik cache through your recovery (this will cause it to happen one more time but might prevent a second or third) and see if it keeps doing it after three reebots. If that doesn't work wipe everything (cache, dalvik cache, and user data) and reflash your ROM or another ROM. If that doesn't do it either unroot and talk to Verizon about warranty (after resetting the flash counter)

What's the right way to wipe the cache and dalvik then? Should I use titanium backup? Not sure how to do it from recovery on this phone. And will doing this have any side effects?

Depending on the release, MDk, ME7, MI1, MJ7 you may not be able to wipe the cache manually from the recovery menu.
Whn I was on ME7, no problem. Now that I'm on MI1, I can't do a manual wipe.
