Greetings xda,
I wanted to COME back to complete 100% warranty from my current Custom Rom using a stock nandroid backup, after skimming the entire SGA Forum, I couldn’t find an all-in-one thread whichs contains a guide to regain 100% warranty including stock firmware, stock recovery, Unroot. I was even told that recovering to back to a stock backup is not possible if you have used an ext4 custom ROM. So I decided to handle this on my own. I hope you find this handy.
Flashing using odin might be easier but I bought my Ace from an Arabic region and i got the JPKP9 firmware. Unfortunately ,most samsung firmware websites lack the MODEM file of the firmware. So in order to address the issue I made this guide to enable people to restore their stock roms from a nandroid backup. Hence, THIS DOES NOT REQUIRE ODIN.
Table of Contents:
A). Requirements
B). Procedure
C). Tests
D). Credits
A). Requirements:
- Samsung Galaxy Ace (GT-S5830) [rooted]
- A stock firmware backup (you might have created this before flashing roms)
- eu.chainfire.cfroot.ext4manager-1.apk*
- Clockworkmod 5 *
- Stock Recovery files *
- Unroot.zip*
*: Inside “WarrantyRegain-UsmanJ.rar” (don’t extract the .zip files)
B). Procedure:
Step 1: Download the “WarrantyRegain-UsmanJ.rar” from HERE.
Step 2: Install the eu.chainfire.cfroot.ext4manager-1.apk file which you downloaded. Run the “ext4” application you installed, it might give you an error if you are not using CF-Root but don’t mind it. Scroll down and click “Convert to rfs”. Your mobile will boot into recovery, Wait for 10-20minutes as it will change the format of System, Data and Cache partition to rfs. Once over, your mobile will restart.
Step 3:Now go to Recovery and head over to “Backup and Restore” and and restore using the stock firmware backup you have. This will take approximately 3-5 minutes. One you have finished: Reboot phone. Congratulations, you have done 60% of the warranty regain process.
Step 4: Once you have restored to Stock Firmware, it is time that you now restore to Stock Recovery. Boot into Recovery again and flash the “Stock_recovery_S5830_2.3.x._by_ingbrzy.zip” you have downloaded. Once you have successfully flashed. Go to Advanced and Reboot Recovery. Now you are in the Stock Recovery.
Step 5: Now flash the Unroot.zip file you have downloaded earlier. Once you have successfully flashed, reboot.
CONGRATULATIONS NOW YOU HAVE GAINED 100% TRUE WARRANTY: Stock Recovery, Stock Firmware and Unrooted.
C). Tests
This method is tested and proved successful on the following Custom ROMS:
- StockLite v6 by tj_droid
- CM 7.2 RC1 by vo-1 (update 26/3/12)
- Bound to work on most ROMs.
D).Credits:
- Ingrbzy: for Stock Recovery
- Gganon: for unroot.zip
- Chainfire and KPK: for ext4 support app (I extracted rfsmaker.zip from it)
- Me: For compiling this guide (Just Kidding )
Don’t Forget to hit the Thanks Button as this is my first MAJOR post on xda.

Why dont just flash a stock rom. That would do it all.

You are free to do that. But, using CWM is often considered much easier than flashing using odin.
Odin is the best for me...connect usb then flash stock, done! Warranty is back

Thank you very much for posting this solution.
After being awake all night i finally was able to restore my stock nandroid backup successfully thank to you.
And yes this method is important for those people who want to go back to what they previously had, in my case i updated my brothers Ace to JB 4.2.2 which after using for a while he asked me to revert it to what he had before{gingerbread} but sadly for me i didnt take any note of what kernel or rom his phone was running at that time and more importantly he needed all his whatsapp messages and other important data.
I only knew that he got his from uk but after going to samfirmwares i was unable to understand which firmware to download due to my little mistake making me more hesitant on what to do.
Finally after searching i found your thread and was able to restore the backup within 15 min
there are no words to describe how thank full i am to you for posting this thread

Hello,
My phone is not recognising in odin through download mode or in samsung kies, I have tried every possible way like changing cables, usb ports, computers, factory reset, but nothing was working, so then I installed cw9 on my samsung galaxy ace s5830i but still no success, now I want to go back to stock rom.
I had not taken any nandroid backup. Can anyone provide with a download link for the stock nandroid backup for Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830I, so that I can transfer it to my sd card and restore it
Thanks

GT-s5830i is not compatible with GT-s5830 model!!! They have different SoC, if you use the s5830 files could brick your phone!
Try to install a compatible rom with the compatible odin version of your device

Hey everyone!
So I have done just about all I can with the SGSII and have decided it is time to do some upgrades, ie root and eventually a custom ROM. The reason behind this is to remove bloat and customize to exactly how I want
I have updated the firmware once via Kies to v2.3.5 and here is a screenshot of the infos.
I am also using a UK 3 (Three) branded handset with the 3 bootscreen and a few unsavory apps that was preinstalled that I would rather not have there
I would like to use SpeedMod kernel which I believe is compatible with my phone and is available from here.
Now for the questions and I'm very sorry if you have heard all this before. It's just that this forum is HUGE and I have tried to gather the info required but I just need a steer in the right direction.
1) Do I flash the SpeedMod kernel via Odin in the same manner as described here in Chainfires thread under long instructions?
2) Is the linked page above for SpeedMod the correct version for my phone?
3) If so, great! If not, then what is the best method to flash and which is the correct kernel?
4) Also I'm under the impression that this is what will give me root, is that right?
5) This one is probably more down to personal opinion, but in your opinion, which is the best and most stable ROM with everything working? (If such a thing exists atm of course)
Many thanks for reading this post and once again I am sorry for the noob Q's, but I guess that is what defines me as a noob in this area
I look forward to seeing your replies,

As for the ROM, hyperdroid. It's very very smooth, no bugs, amazing battery life.

Thanks for your reply! I think those videos are a bit dated now and there is better techniques out now. I have definitely noted down Hyperdroid, I also recall it being quite popular too

No such animal ever if their was then it would be a one rom forum .Plus devs change the rom all the time .Having tried every rom going the major difference is not speed or better battery life just theme .
Root and CWM gives you backup so you backup the custom rom you are using flash another dont like it clicky click back to old rom .
First rule backup EFS
Second rule backup
Third rule read and dont flash until you are comfortable with what you are doing .

Yes this the first Rule backup the EFS, you can use the HK-Tool its on the Market
Thanks for your replies guys but am I correct on how I install the speedmod kernel to get root? Or should I go with the full chainfire method?
Yes I agree that when it comes to roms and personal opinions its more theme orientated but I was trying to get at people's faves. Take a good curry for example, they come in many flavours but my fave is a hot madras, and which may be too hot for some or maybe not as flavoursome as some would like, I believe the same for roms , crap analogy but I tried ;-)
Thanks everyone.

There is unfortunately (as far as I can see) no instructions for installation in that post
I think I may just go for CF, seems like the most popular.
Now to make some backups etc and read MOAR
Any more info that anyone can chip in is very appreciated.

I have backed up my 300+ photos (the only personal stuff I'm really that bothered about because it contains pics of my son who is now 5 weeks old ) but all I can find to back up the EFS is for after root. I tried HC-KTool but that needs root access. Am I right in thinking that the first step is to root via the kernel and THEN make a backup?
Yes CWM and root .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Or if Speedmod kernel installs root just follow his instructions via ODIN .
Then backup EFS folder
Then In CWM app backup phone .
jje
Thanks mate, I went ahead and flashed SpeedMod and I followed the guide to the letter and read up on so much, I'm now rooted
I have also made a backup of the EFS, here's the screenshot's 1 & 2 of backed up data and my kernel version. I used the KTool to do the backup.
Is there anything else I should consider before proceeding with flashing a ROM?
Many thanks, Rizur.
PS you da man JJEgan
EDIT: Oh and I need to do a backup with CWM I believe.
EDIT 2: backup successful via CWM

You are pretty much set, pick a rom and flash away, copy the EFS backup to your computer as well to be safe.
When you flash a new rom you will need to wipe /data aka app data (not sd card eg pics etc) So you may want to backup any game saves etc with titanium backup.
You shouldnt backup/restore system apps with titanium as it may/will cause problems.
As far as choosing a rom, I find hyperdroid to be good, villanrom to be good as long as you dont "need" the newest base, but you can try a few and see what you like.
Thanks mate
Having a big problem now I decided to go for CheckROM as my ROM of choice, I followed the instructions to wipe the device and to put the tar file on sdcard and flash via CWM. This went ok but the flashing took all of about a minute and half, prompted to reboot and now I'm stuck at the screen with the yellow triangle.
I had to pull the battery after about 45mins as this was the only way to turn the phone off. I did backup via CWM and I did backup the EFS with KTool but CWM is finding nothing to backup from
Please some kind soul, help me out with some advice
Flash back stock firmware should do the trick.

This happened with me once and I was a total noob back then. When you're stuck at that triangle, press the power button. If nothing happens, keep pressing it. Worked for me. Felt like such a prat waiting 30 mins for it to boot
The yellow triangle turns up when you root the phone and it wont effect your phone at all, will work just the same.
Hope I helped
I have now downloaded stock firmware from here, do I put that folder on sdcard or remove the .mdf file onto sdcard?
EDIT now I realise i need to perhaps install via Odin, in which field does this md5 go in?

Yeap you'll have to do it via Odin. Goes under PDA.
I still have a few questions before rooting my phone for the first time.
1) if i root 2.3.6 using the right kernel, Can i still install an ics custom rom like resurrection?
2) if i root stock 4.0.3 Poland version or argentinian version, final result of installing a new custom Rom is gonna be the same because it completely replace the first one?
3) what's the difference between nandroid backup and cwm way to backup custom rom? Do i need to keep my backup inside the phone in order to unbrick it tomorrow, or may i just store it on my notebook and delete it from the phone?
Thanks a lot!!

1) Rooting is just to give you access to CWM.. ergo the ability to install custom ROMS so you can install ROMS after rooting
2) When you flash a new ROM (which is rooted) then you dont have to bother about what did you did before that..
3) If i'm not mistaken CWM only allows u to do a nandroid backup.. And if u want to restore to the backup ( in ur case unbrick :silly U need to have that in ur sd card :good:
Happy rooting.. Happy flashing..
1) Follow whatever instructions the rom you're wanting to use has to the letter.
2) If you install a custom rom, then yes, obviously it will replace any stock rom you flash it over the top of.
3) A CWM backup is a Nandroid backup. It's the same thing. You can store your backups wherever you want. I have my 4 most recent Nandroids on my phone, and I have every backup I've ever done on my phone stored on my PC (and another copy on an external drive I use for backups). So I guess the question you're asking is, can I take a Nandroid backup from ages ago stored on my PC, put it on my phone & restore it. Am I right ? If that's what you're asking, the answer is yes.
Thanks. Actually i was asking in case my phone bricks after installing a new rom. I guess i won't be able to come it back to life if i don t have the backup in the phone.
And one more thing. What is efs backup. Do I also need to do it?
Thanks
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Yes. The 2nd thing you should do after your root your phone (first thing is do a Nandroid backup) is to get kTool from Google Play & backup your EFS. Before you install another rom or kernel do both of those.
Keep a copy on your external sdcard & keep another copy on your PC. Just in case you ever need it. We get quite a few people on here every week with IMEI/EFS details gone & most don't have EFS backups.
thanks!

I've actually used that app a few times well (about 5) and haven't had any issues but once you get CWM installed and you flash kernels through it you won't get the yellow triangle.

There will always be a risk when using anything that manupulates root access, but triangle away is quite safe, as for what kernel if works on, most kernel threads will say if it is compatiable or not, but only with ICS kernels, not GB kernels.
"...once you get CWM installed and you flash kernels through it you won't get the yellow triangle."
What do you mean by that? I actually don´t need to use the app, because triangle will dissapear anyway after flashing a Kernel?

You will still have the triangle after flashing a new rom or kernel, the best way to get rid of it is triagle away, this app will also reset your flash counter.
Once you get a working CWM, let's say you're using Cyanogenmod 9 and you want to flash over the stock kernel.
You'd put the kernel file on the memory of the device (sdcard) and boot in CWM recover and flash from there and you won't get the triangle.
The triangle won't go away now if you unless you use a USB jig or the triangle away app. So get rid of the triangle now and when you want to try a new kernel flash it through CWM and the triangle won't appear. Flash a kernel through download mode and you'll get the triangle.

Fixing permissions is automatic I believe in CWM recovery. It's an option in the recovery menu. Remember to wipe data and cache (dalvik too) when flashing a next rom or else you won't be able to boot.

Thanks for the info mate
By the way, you should really just buy a USB Jig off eBay for a few quid, it resets the custom binary counter (on old bootloaders) and can also force your phone into download mode after a bad flash. Handy to have around. Also, now that you have rooted your phone, download EFS Pro (found here on XDA) and back up your EFS folder before any flashing. Lose this folder and your in serious trouble!

Hey guys,
I've been seeing a few posts with unfortunate people having trouble restoring their phone to stock state (i.e. unroot and stock OS and no CWM).
I wonder, though, what preliminary steps should I take for the installation of a CWM (and eventually CM on my S II), and what steps should I take when I want to restore it back to stock state.
There are quite a few names and methods, but I've been wondering what the popular (and hopefully foolproof) method is?
I currently have a stock S II.
Any help is appreciated
I just used Odin and flashed a stock ROM on to it. All traces of root was removed after that.
The only step Id do would be to make sure Odin works with my phone[in case you need to use download mode].
Its inbetween rooting and installing custom roms you need to worry about;eg
Efs backup
Nand backup

Yes you can take back up of your stock os only after installing safe kernal... After that you get custom recovery from there you can take backup
DO NOT TRY TO WIPE OR TRY TO TAKE BACKUP FROM STOCK RECOVERY.

Guys I have a Samsung S4 GT-I9500 version running on XXUAMDK the official stock ROM. Rooted using the Adam's Kernel method with TWRP recovery.
Now I have to update it to the newer version XXUBMEA which cannot obviously be done by OTA or Kies
So my question is that if i use Odin and follow the normal procedure to flash the ROM
1. Would it brick my phone?
2. Would the phone be still rooted.?
3. Will it wipe out all my applications installed later?
If the phone will not have the root. What steps could i possibly perform to root it again
U see i dont wanna take risks on such a costly phone.
Please any experienced help would greatly be appreciated

You should make a backup of your installed applications using Titanium Backup. You will then need to Odin back to the original Firmware because you said you can't get OTA updates for some reason. This will cause a loss in root. It will also wipe all your data and programs off the device. If done correctly you will not brick your phone. Make sure the file is in the PDA slot. You can root the phone again by going here. Once everything is setup you can use Titanium Backup to restore all your applications. Then make sure to use TriangleAway to reset your flash counter.

I have adam's kernel installed and twrp recovery but my firmware is original and hence I don't recieve the OTA and Kies updates
Further my mobile is an I9500 butbthe link u provided is i9505
I would also like to know if my cuzrom kernel and Recovery will retain after I update to official ROM using odin
Okay so I couldn't wait for any answers and I gathered some guts and flashed the new firmware .
My root's worn off , So i have used the CF autoroot thingy posted by DarkMenace above to root it again.
and yes all my applications and contacts r still intact
I love Samsung Galaxy S4 :')
Thanks people for all ur help :good:
Just out of curiosity, why did you bother posting in this forum of you have an i9500? Would it not have made infinitely more sense to ask your question in that device's forum?

Hello. New to rooting. Root worked well, cool stuff. Then i tried to flash a rom,(probably never again) cyanogen rom said it was unstable on the s3 but i saw posts of slimrom(.net) and it sounded steady.. now i cannot unzip files or flash roms or get any gapps to work. Softbrick i guess its called. Plus my backup isnt on my phone anymore. Do i need to Kies my way out? Any help would be dope. I never thought id want touchwiz so bad. . . Also if kies works will my google apps be back?

Like JellyYogurt said we need more detail your post is confusing this is probably a easy fix and you need to read up more on how to flash roms.First of all there is nothing wrong with slimrom I have flashed it many times without any problems..."unzip files" why would you want to unzip files to flash a rom?
Rom's come in a couple of formats zip files which you flash with a custom recovery ( you do not unzip them) or .tar files which you flash with odin (these are normally stock roms).
Can you get into recovery? (If yes perform a factory reset and reboot ) see if that works,if not you mention you have a backup can't you put your backup on ext SD card with a card reader and restore from recovery or do you mean you delated it ?
If you just want to go back to stock touchwiz and not bother with custom roms again just download your phone version from sammobile and flash with odin. Also another misconception is that you said you rooted then tried to flash a rom why? You only need to root your phone if you are going to stay on stock rom and use root apps and not flash custom roms. The reason is 99% of custom roms come already rooted so you can skip rooting your phone yourself.
More detail is needed so people can answer you correctly

I flashed the rom using the instructions on slimroms.net. but i think i didnt 'wipe data and cache'. the unzip thing is an example of how unstable it is. I can go recovery. But my comp is broke so i didnt get ro go to sammobile for the files. I created alot of backups with titanium but it seems they are all deleted (didnt move to another device, live and learn). Thanks for the speedy assistance. Ill try odin and sammobile tonight after work. Just figured out how to go back into recovery mode after i made this post.
You have to do a wipe data and format system as they said. Guess u didnt do both?

Ok... Let us know how you get on.
Also titanium only backups up system and user apps it is not a complete backup of your system for that you needed to do a nandroid backup with your recovery (if you don't know what that is there are some stickies threads explaining what it is) Good luck.

Okay. Got it. First I had to go to my slimkat settings and check root access etc, thats why nothing worked. then I kept trying to unzip the gapps folder, not knowing it had to be flashed also(stopped reading right before that in the instructions, oops). After i flashed the gapps i could get into playstore np and its running smooth. First rooting attempt alittle panicky but my s3 now has 11.01gbs of storage and all the apps i really need. Thank you both for the quick reply. Sorrying for noobing out back there. Im starting to understand alittle more. Im going to read on back-up/recovery and hopefully be rooting this Gflex on Tuesday.
Good to hear ur fone is working once again
