I live in the sw burbs of Chicago, and I am getting anywhere from 4-16 down, and 2-9 up; coming from Sprint, where you were lucky to get 1 meg down, I am totally blown away by these speeds...but, I guess its all relative!
Just got this phone sunday, and I am very impressed so far

How deep in the city are you tho...
I found that anywhere downtown, in the loop area or between buildings, 4G speeds were terrible..something like 3-6...but when I go more than 10 miles south, north or west of downtown, I was hitting 22-25!

I was in Naperville a few weeks ago and will be there again next week and am dreading having to use LTE because with it being sloth-like slow in Chicagoland, the LTE will drain my battery even more than better equipped LTE areas which already put a heavy burden on the battery.
Just hoping the hotel I'm staying at has Wifi like the last one did.... lol

"sloth like slow"? total exaggeration, man...
like I said, people are really spoiled, when they say that 6-15 megs down on a phone is "sloth like slow"...
Us Sprint refugees think that speed is rocket-like...

Coming from Sprint, you're used to watching paint dry faster than you can down/upload a 5kb file.
Not so with us ATT peeps. Trust me, ATT is not without it's well-documented problems also, but a major metro area like Chicago having slow-ass-sloth LTE is beyond unacceptable when the bar of precedent has been set so much higher, in much smaller areas. Charlotte for instance!!!
I'm not comparing Sprint w/ATT for LTE speeds. I'm comparing Chicago with Charlotte of all frigging places, and Chicago comes in WAY second best there.
That's a joke no matter how you slice it.
-Ryan

yeah, I guess its all relative; I assume I will get spoiled over time, and have problems with 5-15 meg d/l speeds//
Fortunately, in my home office on wifi, I get almost 40 megs down, so, in every way, especially coming from Sprint, I an thrilled with my speeds.
I havent rooted yet, only having the phone for a few days, and I want to learn all about it first, but I can only imagine how it will be rooted, tweaked, and dialed in completely!

Very nice read, thanks. I just dont understand how some other guys are getting 40+Mbs DL and 20+Mbs UL speeds, makes us here in Chicago look like we are on dial up. I know Chicago was rated as slowest ATT LTE in the nation but this article says we are on par with what we are getting. Either way I am happy with the speed but its a drug we all wanna go faster faster.

Can anyone get through a YouTube with out it stopping on 3G. This is hoorible. My EVO 4G has full bars and not a single hiccup. Is it just me? I took the OTA, not sure if that makes a difference, but I am going back right now and getting another one. This time I am not taking the OTA as I have seen what Green Hornet looks like. My 3G is double what my Evo 4G was giving me...maybe you just have a bunch of new users in your area,I'm in Apopka FL...I can actually get a 4G signal in my home now too

Last year when the Evo4G was released, within a week I watched my 3G speeds steadily drop from about 1mpbs+ down to 50-400 kbps (depending on time of day). They never recovered. Apparently all those new Evo's overloaded their network. History is probably repeating itself.
Same here I came from tmobile and 3g was so fast YouTube video would play in seconds. But on the evo 3d take time and when it plays it stop like few second later. I live in Tampa Florida.

I was just about to suggest that, call CC and get your MSL, then remove the proxies in the. ##8232# advanced settings. You will see a significant increase in data speed.
i've been getting around 700-800kbps... i used to get 1000kbps on evo 4g. Sprint is a mess right now in FL as far as data goes. Just last month they had a huge outage in my area and i was getting just 30kbps for three days. Drove me insane. I've been happy with Sprint for years, but lately I've been haring many complaints about data speeds from people... If the ATT-Tmo deal goes down, I think Sprint will be finished.
I'm lucky to see 300 Kb.

Everyone knew or should of known before getting the phone that lte was not up yet and you would be on the 3G network.
If your sales person didn't tell you this then I would take it up with your salesperson. If you bought the phone online then sorry about your luck, lesson learned. ( Hopefully )
Either way don't knock Sprint for something they have made clear. It was never stated to have 4G WiMax. Only 3G and lte when available.

You brought the EVO LTE thinking you might get decent 3g speeds? I'm sure you're smarter then that or am I giving you to much credit? This is an old subject we should be discussed somewhere else.
I completely knew what I was getting. However, I did not expect slower 3G than I had with the OF EVO. Nor .MMS that don't download. LTE will be here soon but I'd like just a but of utility out of 3G...

All you guys complaining about 3g speed ever heard of the Network Vision?
BE PATIENT. Sprint is in the process of improving their entire network. You may not see the improvements yet, but trust me they are working on it.
I live in Aurora, CO and there are two towers here that are as opposite as night and day. One is totally bogged down and speeds are 200 kbps Down and 200 kbps Up with 400 ping. About 3 miles away, another tower gives me 1200 kbps down and 800 kbps up with 100 ping.
They are working on it, just have patience.

I've been patient with Sprint for over 12 years. I get that it is coming. The point is 3G is worse now than it was with the OG. And this is with new towers on 3G in the area. Simply pathetic especially considering I work and live next to a major international airport and large technology corridor.

You could always call the Sprint direct customer service line, 877-775-4886, and make a formal complaint about said speeds. See if they can give you some freebies if not some information regarding the Network Vision roll-out in your local area. Who knows, they might throw in some credit or something.

That might be my best bet. I was cool with 3G on the OG - hardly ever used WiMax since it was so spotty. I am simply at a loss for how this is playing out when everyone else seems to be having much better luck.
My 3g speeds are about the same as they were on my og evo, and most of the time they suck. The part that really sucks for me is that I might notice that my speeds are really slow and run a speed test, and confirm it, then an hour, or day later, the speed might be flying.
As an example, I just ran a speed test because it seemed slow, I got 203 kbps down and 506 kbps up. Yesterday I noticed it seemed faster than normal, so I did a speed test from my desk at work, the same location as the test I just did today. I got 2389 kbps down and 925 kbps up, by far the fastest I have ever seen it here.
At home I rarely see speeds over 100 kbps, yet just the other day I got about 1000 kbps down there. The bottom line for me is, I wouldn't care if the speeds weren't great if they were just consistent. It sucks when I need to do something quick and the data connection is crawling, which is the case more often than not.
I had a problem right out of the box. My ping was over 800 and was getting under 100 down. Weird thing wad that up was at like 300. I had this problem with my 3# so I called sprint and asked for my msl. Enter ##72786#. Enter your msl and then go to menu reset. It will reactivate. My speeds went up to over 1000. Worth a shot for u guys. Interesting sidenote... When I called in the tech told me to power down the phone and remove the battery. I let him know that these phones don't have removable batteries. Amazing that some techs don't even know about their flagship devices...

This last Sunday and early morning Monday Sprint was apparently testing LTE in San Antonio area. Lte lit up on my phone off and on...had chance to run several speed test...as follows:
Worst up/down was 3-5 Mbps range
Best up/down was 6-8 Mbps range
My connections on outskirts-suburbs of San Antonio is usually pretty mediocre with 3G...average is .5 to .6 Mbps down and .3 Mbps up. If I could get close to the type of speeds I saw during the testing I'd be thrilled. Probably even better in city closer to towers. Sad it's delayed till 15 Jul but something to look forward to.

If I can get those numbers (Even the worst case) sustainably throughout the metroplex (Dallas/Ft Worth), I'll be ecstatic.
With LTE comes network vision, a all new system with greater backhaul, wider coverage and far better penetration. Essentially same as Verizon's network, the LTE should also be on par with Verizon's as well.
I'll be paying attention to Baltimore. If its not doing good, no way I'm signing up for 2 long years

Aw man, a service that's been available for two weeks doesn't work perfectly for me, they must be doing something wrong!
Lol. Sprints network is much faster than 6 to 8 mbs dl, it's just what they can guarantee. It's always better to underestimate the network rather than overestimate it.

I've been using it every day and that's actaually exactly what I get: 6-8MGPS. I hope it improves of course. In fact 6-8 works fine for me, I was just doing some research on why it is so much slower than the RAZORMAx I also have-pulling down 30+ in the same spot.

Bro that really wasn't my point whatsoever. But since you brought it up, my thunderbolt pulled down 30+ the day Verizon flipped on LTE so I don't think what your saying really holds up here?

Worst article ever....completely lacks any knowledge of what's going on in the NV buildout at all....if they did then they wouldn't of wasted their time writting that article bc sprint is upgrading backhaul to microwave or fiber based everywhere during this rollout...soooooo much is being done and changed its insane to think what this article points to...basically the only thing that will be the same when this is done is the freaking tower structure itself!
For those that don't know what's going on nor the details, take some time to go read up on everything and grasp some knowledge and be better educated on it all please....

Thanks. That helps also. Again, I was just sitting here , with two phones , both connected to their repective LTE networks , and wanted to understand why such a speed discrepency. That was the first article I found. I didn't present it as fact. You sound like you know what your talking about. Can you link me to anything that will help me better understand why I see such speed differences on such similar technology? ( full signal bars on both).

take a week and read around all over there....
Verizon is using a 10x10MHz LTE network while Sprint's is only 5x5MHz....BUT VZ has a butt load more subscribers on their network than sprint so in the end they need more capacity anyway to start....
Most of the complaints from sprints current build out have been b/c they are announcing markets as live when only roughly 25% towers are live and ready....
Sprint is also building their network out to have a higher average speed as opposed to a higher peak speed,....something I completely agree with tbh, as I would much rather avg 7-10Mbps all the time(with the peak of 20ish) than peak out on a speed test at 30 every now and then....also whats the real honest need for 30Mbps connection on your phone anyway?...if your looking to replace your home Internet connection with this then I can see the need, otherwise I dont get the strong need for 30Mbps speed DL on a phone right now....yeah itll help out with the file downloads some but other than that?.....

Completely agree. Id rather have consistency all day as well. And, as I posted earlier, I'm completely fine with the 6-8 I'm getting (who needs more than that on a phone really?) , I just got to wondering why the speeds were so drastically different between the two.

consistency is key..I'd much rather be blanketed in LTE.that I know what speeds to expect..I'm not dling large files on the go anyways..that's why I have da wifiz..anything above 5 will suit me ..I get 20 mbs DowN at home.with WiFi and hd YouTube (app)still buffers constantly..shoot id be happy with consistent 2-3 mbs 3g

usually am....
another note though....as noted over there, there are infact places in Chicago that are having sites completed before backhaul is in place, which would explain the results some have experienced....backhaul connections are "supposed" to be in place before sites go live but there are instances this isn't the case evidently....its rare but it has happened....
regardless though, its a temporary situation and easy/quick fix once its ready and the provider has their ish in gear and backhaul in place...
Holy cow there are some defensive people around here....Sprint employees maybe?

If you're talking about sarge, I don't think so. He just knows what he's talking about and frowns on poorly researched posts/articles.

Where, in Chicago, are you that you're getting any LTE connection at all? Because LTE isn't active in Chicago, yet... lol If you're in a far-south suburb, you may be connecting to Hammond, Indiana's network. Reports in other Chicago areas have been sporadic, at best.

What kind of LTE speeds are you getting?

Here's what I got

Talk about night and day. Both ends of the spectrum. So, what is the point, here?
No way to compare speeds. So many variables. Carrier. Plan. Location. Etc etc.

Relax. i'm just having fun. They are awesome numbers. Not sure it meant you needed to create a new thread over them, but it's all good.
I am on an MVNO and get 40-50 down and 20-30 up. Small town so not bad. Same speeds I got on my other lte phones. Will test when I go to town later. He must be on ATT?

I used T-Mo for just a month to test. Speeds were great outside but once I walked into my work building it was bad. I was bummed because they have a great family plan.
My hometown city, Springfield, MO AT&T doesn't have enough bandwidth. 10-15 down, 5-10 up. I'm in Tulsa, OK this weekend, 45-55 down, 30-40 up.
At home, 100-150ping, Tulsa, 30-40ping.
I think AT&T has forgot about early LTE cities. San Antonio is horrendous on LTE, I can get faster speeds on hspa most of the time. Too bad you can't force it.
