Questions about voltage, battery, ma - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

I have 3 batteries :
2x 950 mAh + 1x 1150 mAh (all of them are 3.7v)
And I'm going to connect them together and make a portable recharge-able battery charger for my phone
My question is :
1. Can I charge them directly with computer USB port?
2. Can I charge my phone directly using these batteries ?
If not, what do I need?

Hmm, I think you may have to charge them seperately in your phone via USB, unless you can have the wires at the right ohms. Interesting idea though

1. No - Li-ion batteries have 3,7V and USB have 5V, second is Li-ion needs special charging control microprocessor - without it the can overcharge and explode, don't try it!!
2. No - you need an step-up circuit to get 5V on the output which is need to charge the phone.

Car Charging?

So I went on a 2 hour trip using my EVO as a gps. I had it plugged into the car charger the entire time. Little did I know the EVO was using the battery faster than it was charging. I've done this many times with the EVO 4G with no problems. Any suggestions? The phone is basically useless as a gps for any long distance trips. The battery will never last.

get current widget, it tell you how fast your phone is charging, and when unplug how fast your phone is draining in mah, note your mah usage when unplug, then note your mah usage when battery is fairly low and plugged in to charge with the car charger.
if your battery is low (below 50%) and your phone still won't charge faster than 500mah on the car charger, it will not keep up with GPS uses, be aware that as the battery approach full, it charges slower and slower, near 97~99% it will only charge @ about 100mah rate.
I bet you have a cheapy car charger that only supply 500 mAmp, get one that can supply 1000 to 2000 mAmp (1A to 2A... 2A usually for DUAL usb outlet type charger)

Mine wasn't charging unless it was plugged into the wall until I typed ##3828# and checked "enable USB charging". Now it charges while plugged into a computer or car as well.
Password is your MSL, lots of posts how to get it. Not responsible if you mess your phone up.

So i enabled usb charging and when I go back into the ##3282# menu it it always reverts back. How do you get it to stick.

Also, I have a decent charger. It's one of the ones that has two ports on it. By the way I was only charging the EVO 3D I didn't have anything else connected.

Usually in that mode you have to click menu then hit commit modifications..

I've never had a problem using this older but more powerful iGo AutoPower 3000 car charger. Overstock has them for $6.50+shipping and you get a bunch of power tips with it but not a microUSB tip.

DC Input: 11.5-16 VDC

From my understanding, the tips have a resister in them which limits the mAmp output but I'm not sure what the a97 tip specs are since iGo doesn't seem to release that info. Hopefully it's 1A like the wall charger. I can verify that the newer single output iGo chargers are limited to .75A. So even if the tip is 1A, the charger is the limiting factor, hence why I recommend the older, more powerful one.

Read the label on the charger, make sure it say at least 1A or even better 2A
lots of cheapy dual USB on ebay that's not rated for 2A
if you got a 2A charger and current widget still show 500ma charge rate,
then you may have to figure out if your phone is charging in USB charge mode with the car charge (limit to 500ma by the phone per USB spec) or in AC charge mode (charge at up to 1A)

look at the mouse over box comment... of course every charger is different so don't just blindly do the mod if you have a different charger.
as for the other guy asking for 2A charger....
Ebay and Amazon have alot, just make sure they specificly say 1A for single USB or 2A for dual USB output.
for 2A dual USB, the OEM HTC thunderbolt one seem to be the best but also most pricey, some alternative are the Motorola dual usb and the Tmobile my touch 4g dual USB

It's weird, I click the box for usb charging then click commit changes and a little box pops up "no changes made" I'm not sure how to save the changes.

Was having the same issue;
I used the car charger I had for my EVO, left it on for 3+ hrs, with little to no increase from where I put it on at. Ended up using a buddy of mine sharger and viola. Imex99 explained the reason for it. Just buy a new charger with 1A/2A output rating and you'll be good.
I'm having the same issues. I click enable usb charging and then commit, but it keeps reverting back to disabled with no difference in charging capability.
Speaking of car charging, why does the battery temperature vary so much between AC & USB, versus Car charging?
With the supplied HTC AC charger or USB connected to a computer, the battery's charging voltage is 4.333 volts and the temperature is 81*F.
With a Sprint Car Charger, the charging voltage is 4.333 volts but the temperature is 95.5*F
Even chargers rated at 1A/2A may not have the appropriate pins soldered together to enable 1amp charging. Please see this thread I made when I had the Evo 4G:

Slow charging?

I don't know if it's a kernel/rom problem, or a hardware controller that's at fault, but ever since I got this phone charging in car chargers, computer usb outlets, and even alternate wall chargers has been painstakingly slow!
It takes forever to charge, and takes a dedicated powerful wall outlet to even do anything.
Anyone else experiencing this?
The default Samsung Provided Wall outlet charger provides .7A of power, while USB provides .5A of power max. Also what percentage do you charge it at, and can you take a screenshot of your battery usage graph?
The 3rd party chargers that designed for iDevices are not recognized as AC chargers and will be charging at USB mode which is much shower.

So if I am understanding correctly we were limited to 660 mA at max and unless some way to change it is found, there is unfortunately no use from more powerful chargers .

Perhaps you have either a faulty battery or a faulty charger.

Put your phone in to power saving mode and see if it charges faster.
Other wise exchange it under warranty.
I've experienced that this devices charges significantly slower then my previous devices.
I found it odd when I saw the stock a/c USB adapter outputs at .7mA so i did a starch and found an article out there with a statement from Samsung stating that their devices are designed to charge slow because it's healthier for the battery.
I don't know if the charging current is restricted by some code in the kernel or a physical chip in the main board.

It is true that slow charges do increase the overall life of the battery. Also not charging it all the way or discharging it all the way will keep the life of the battery. If you discharge the phone all the way down, it will take much longer to charge than charging it back up from 20% or so.

Can you please post the output voltage and amperage for the battery charger on that accessory? Should be either on a sticker on the bottom of the device our written in fine print on the charger.
Also just to double check, it does not charge a docked device, just the spare battery?

Physical chip. However on other GS2s and original GalaxyS phones, the chip was fairly controllable by the kernel.
Ours isn't - it has three settings. 90, 400, 660 mA.

It is 600mA, and it just charges the spare battery.
I strongly advise against buying third party batteries or chargers. The Galaxy S 2 (AT&T version) uses a battery with NFC technology. Using anything other than an OEM Samsung battery, or an NFC compliant battery could cause damage to your device.

Charging S3 in Ford Fiesta S 2011 USB port

Is it OK to charge my S3 using the USB port of my car? I'm not sure of the current rating of the USB port but if ever can it be lower than 500mA (standard current rating of USB 2.0) and have no problems with it? If it's less than 500mA, it will take longer to charge, I know, but is it safe?

Yes it is safe. By default that port will charge at 500mA

Right, thanks. Same rating with USB 2.0 ports in computers.
It might take you 8 hours or more before you have a fully charged phone but go ahead.. unless you boost your USB Charge rate by installing a custom kernel like Syiah

The obvious con is that you may and probably will fry your Usb port on the computer.
To keep their stuff as cheap as possible, manufacturers have usually stopped using current-limiters in the usb ports. So if you drain more power than it was spec'ed for the weakest link will burn out eventually. (over-engineering is long gone in computer hardware)
However you won't often really charge that faster since you simply can't get any more...

It takes me about 1-2 hours on a wall charger, 2 if it's fully flat. I always try to use the wall charger as it's much faster, but I will use USB attached to a computer if I have no other option.
wall charger is two times faster than the usb! one is at 1000 mA and the other is at 450mA by default. If you want to change that you should install custom kernel.
Usb3 should be detected and the full 900mAh used (which on some compuhers may cause the chipset to power down the port if other devices are plugged in

Guys, my gf will be getting a 2.1A + 1.0A dual usb charger because her old one died, what is the safe limit for the charging control so i don't fry her S3?

I suggest you stick with stock value which is 1000 mA over wall charger and 475 mA over USB.
In theory, yes, the i9300 can take with maximum up to 2100 mA but I'm sure nobody will recommend it.

So you think going above 1000mah could be dangerous to the device?
The charger supports 2.1A, or atleast that's what it says.
(When i had an S3 too, i set usb input charge to 850mah because i had usb 3.0 on my pc and it was charging just fine!Don't know if it matters or not though.)

I know, the chargers for tablets such as iPad has output capacity of 2100 mA.
And I think, stock value set to 1000 mA is for good reason like archive minimum charge time and less dangerous to the device and battery.
One thing I sure is that, if you charge with 2.1 A, your battery will probably heat up like hell, and that high temperature is NOT GOOD for Li-ion battery as we have for i9300.
For myself, I always set it down to 800 mA for over night charging (I guess you won't set up a alarm in the middle of night to wake you up to unplug the charger, will ya? ). And I do use 2.1 A charging, in case of EMERGENCY like I have to go out for long time and my battery is low so I have to make the battery charged as much as I possibly could. But still, it is NOT recommended.
