[Q] USB problem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I hope somone can help me, I have a TMobile UK Samsung GS2, I have it unlocked and rooted for some time now and have been happily flashing custom ROM's with no problems but a couple of days ago after flashing and update to my current ICS ROM, I am no longer able to connect it to a PC I get an error message saying the device is unrecognised, I have tried 3 different PC's and 3 different cables, I even tired a MAC! I have rolled back to a previous ICS version via nandroid backup and that does not work, I even rolled back to a GB version of a nandroid backup and still no joy, I have tried pretty much every wipe option available and installed from new, it still does not connect, if I boot into download mode odin does not pick it up, Kies does not pick it up, I have an hdmi adapter to plug into my TV that does not work anymore as well as an adapter to connect a flash drive and although the power light on the flash drive shows up the device does not show on the phone, I can charge the phone however. I have posted on the ROM forum on XDA and the guys there have tried to help mainly by different wipe options but nothing has so far worked.
I noticed while experimenting with different kernels that the back around the camera would get very hot, I wonder if something has burnt out, if I am going to try and send it back to TMobile under warranty I guess I need to flash a stock ROM and would have done this through Odin but that is not an option
Does any of you genii out there know how I can fix this?? I am not such a newb and work in IT so have a gut feeling it is a hardware problem that is not easy to fix however one of you may know what to do.
Thanks in advance.

You could use mobile odin to flash the stock rom back, it sounds like your micro usb connector has gone faulty, its a common fault with the Galaxy S2.

I already answered you in your other post.

Sorry about that I originally posted here then saw that it was probably the wrong forum, so I reposted, can I remove this one??

Ok guys after hours of wiping a flashing I have got to the bottom of my problem, I tired cleaning the usb port on the phone as suggested in the general forum and tried installing some mobile dev tools from microsoft, neither of which seemed to work, although I did manage to blow quite a bit of dust out with the compressed air!! Then I read a post where one guy was doing all his flashing without the sim and sd card installed, so I took both of them out and would you believe it I plugged my phone into my PC in download mode and odin picked it up! to I booted the phone plugged it back into the PC and voila it picked up the phone without errors as a mass storage device!! , I put the sim back in and tired again, picked up mass storage device again!! , so I figure my sandisk 64gb micro sd card has become corrupt, I have backed it up and formatted it in CWM and now that is picked up too!!! will transfer the data back over to it to be sure it is fine.
I wanted to say a big thanks to all who have offeed advie and help, especially nickmax1, cooza, ger5, daclaus and of course indie for his great rom, I lost the faith for a while there but have it back now thanks to you guys, it is a pleasure to be part of this great community.
Cheers all

[Q] Flashing custom FW, returns to stock.

Hey all, before I say my problem, firstly I have no idea if this is the right section in the forums so apologies in advance, secondly, I have held out for 3 days trying to work out various issues before I posted. I probably did just miss one thing or misread another but no matter how much I look, no idea what as new to this. Thanks in advance for your help.
Basically, wanted to flash some custom firmware to my phone, I have been having many issues with backing up on Kies, seems to be something related to my USB's and my computer, it keeps failing during the backing up of programs. I ended up giving up on this, made a titanium pro back up of System files and of programs, also made a Nandroid backup, both on my internal phone memory I believe. Have root access, installed busy box and such, backed up some other stuff using EFS Pro, now I am completely confused, I have followed a few guides dotted around the internet, tried to install some custom firmware, it was Carbon Rom 4.2 I believe. I went into the CMW menu, wiped data/factory reset, wiped partition cache, and wiped dalvik cache, installed the rom from my internal phone memory, as it would not find it on the memory card when I tried, and now after two attempts of it seemingly doing it, on rebooting the phone, I go back to the Samsung firmware.
I have tried to read up as much as I can but obviously I am missing something here and no amount of guides or google searches have hinted at my problem, could anyone help? I know people asking constantly for information on how to put on custom firmware will be irritating, but I have genuinely taken this as far as I can alone Cheers
Now after formating something under mount/system, my phone is stuck on the logo screen, reinstalling the ROM does not work either, no idea what to do now
reflash rom, wipe data and voila.
Hey, thanks for the reply. By reflash rom, which way do you mean, am pretty confused still. The rom I download basically bricked my phone, I don't know why, I think to recover it I use ODIN and get my stock software, so is that what you mean? Or can I somehow use my Nandroid back up..?

If you have a Nandroid restore that or flash your original firmware via Odin .
Never restore system files after a firmware change with TB .

Ok here is the situation now, I have made things 100 times worse, I possibly should not of been doing it this late... I followed guides exactly though and there is definitely something not working right with this phone, I just don't know what, all I know is its very temperamental with connecting to computers and will fail doing the custom firmware flashes half the time, no matter what I use, even using the stock ROM i got from samimobile has caused many problems. It might be me, I don't know, but in my frustration followed some advice on a forum and I think I formatted the mount/system. SO obviously I lost both my back up's. My fault and can live with that, phone was bricked and had to do that to get past it I think..
But now no matter what kernel I use and have tried quite a few including my original one, I am unable to connect to my home wifi. It definitely is not the wifi, it worked just fine before I flashed the phone and has been working with it for 4 months, now whenever I set up the phone its constantly stuck in this obtaining network ip infinite loop. No fixes I have used have helped at all so far Sorry to keep asking stuff, I am just literally at the end of my tether, was up until 7am messing with it to no avail.
Just to reiterate a point, the reason I wanted custom firmware was because the phone was crashing randomly and just dying on me and also the speaker had lost like 90% of the volume when I wanted to play music, also it would not connect to my computer with ease, now obviously before I did anything it had issues. So that is why I feel something might be wrong, not saying I did not break anything myself, just the process of flashing the firmware has been pretty straight forward once I did it a couple of times, it has just been failing and bricking every other time, so I am not sure what the problem actually is, did I miss a step, did I mess it up? If not what has. Please helps guys. Regards.

formatting system wouldn't touch your backups

Usual reply if you did not know what and why and had never bothered to read the faqs and guides before flashing .Then its nearly always user error .
Best take it to a service centre and pay for a repair .

Found out something really handy
Hi guys,
TheGS3 has 1 huge trick when u got stuck in firmware, CSC, etc.
Especially when u used some super usefull toolkit (like me)
I used the Galaxy S3 Toolkit, option4 (ALL in ONE) just push enter 2 times
1 to start and the last one to exit...
Got all the issues i read on hundreds of pages searching for the solution.
Accidentialy i found this morning (its 4:45am right now and busy with it since 15:00)
Start Kies, connect GS3 with USB kabel and when it says not connected take out USB
Dont plug in USB for a while...
In KIES go to Tools and irmware upgrade.. Remember, DONT plug in USB
It will ask u for your model nr which is printed on sticker in baterycover
Confirm and it will ask u S / N' which is printed on same sticker
It will start downloading firmware and u will be guided through update progress
Good Luck to y'all.. Time to go to bed.......

[Q] Soft-Brick help!

Hello guys, I have (I think) soft bricked my Galaxy S2.
(Details: UK Phone, Carrier was Orange but now I am running 3 on it, official phone model Galaxy I9100T (NFC support iirc) )
Right I am curious bunny hacking away at the phone from the day I bought it, reading pages after pages on different roms and kernel and everything. Finally I settled on CyanogenMod 9 and then went straight to the CM10.1 release. Today Morning I installed the 23/02/2013 CM10.1 realease and then started browsing the XDA forums on whats new. I came across the Siyah 6.0b kernel release and saw it was compatible with cm10.1, eager and foolish I downloaded the apk without doing any further reading or any instruction, overconfident from all the flashing I have been doing for the past year, flashed the kernel via CWM recovery. Now the phone is stuck in what I assume is a boot loop (again I am pretty noobish).
So What have I tried to fix the soft brick?
I tried to go "restore" an img I had taken a week ago of the system with CWM but the phone would no longer boot into recovery.
So I went ahead and got all the recovery package (I9100TDULP9_I9100THUTLP7_HUT) to reflash my phone with Odin 3.07.
This is where I hit a brick wall and now I am truly lost at what to do, my computer doesn't recognise the phone (Download Mode). I keep getting "there is a problem with this device" error and the Device manager shows an unknown device connected. So I installed the Samsung drivers from the samsung website with no luck. Still getting unknown device error. So I googled for a solution and the only solution that came up was reformat my PC since it could be a problem within the OS, so I went forward and used two other PC and still getting the error. Please Help SOS.
tl;dr: Getting Device not recognised error when I connect phone to the computer via USB cable.
Thanks in advance to all the knights to my rescue

Just go to recovery menu (VOLUP+MENU+POWER) and wipe cache and wipe dalvik. That should fix it.

I cannot enter Recovery Mode, the screen just goes blank
EDIT: So the only thing that works atm is
1) The battery charge animation (huge green battery in the middle of the screen) when plugged in.
2) Download/Odin mode (which 3 computer refuse to recognise when connected via a USB cable)
EDIT2: The other thing I forgot to mention was, that I have lost the original SII micro USB cable which was black and now I am using the white micro USB cable I received with my Galaxy Note 2.
You could try uninstalling all Samsung-related drivers/software (Ie: Kies), download the Android Naked Driver or the Android ADB Driver (I wish I could recall where I got it from, but it also came with the driver for the Galaxy SII... Sounds like it might be more of a driver issue than it would be a cable issue..
Borrow and S2 cable.
There are a lot of guys having issues with note's cable.
Try a laptop, and install kies on any other pc you try.
Flash siyah v5 instead of flashing v6.
You can relax, if the only thing you did is flash a kernel then there is nothing wrong with your phone.
Try different cables, try Odin 1.85 (that one always worked for me), try different pc's, reinstall drivers, make sure no kies process is running in the background.
First of all thanks for the replies
I couldn't get the drivers working still (after re-installing, installing kies). But while eating lunch I remembered reading about removing battery and pressing the Power button and it doing something I couldn't quite remember. So I thought to myself it wouldn't hurt trying. Did that and the phone Finally booted in recovery mode, I took a breather of relief and than located my previous backup img and restored the phone.
But now a new problem arose, the phone went into SIM lock as soon as it booted and now I guess I have to fix that
Well thanks guys
Quick question guys is SIM network unlock pin basically same unlocking phone form a carrier?
It's asking for a SIM pin or network code?
Get galaxysim unlock by searching xda (free here, paid at play store).

Need assistance on bricked S3

I have a SGH-I747M 4.1.1 Galaxy S3.
I used the Unified Toolkit and rooted/installed CWM, backuped and ready for a new ROM.
As I was installing this custom ROM (Pardus HD), and error popped up and it was aborted, (still in the CWM main menu)
but having only the said custom ROM zip file in the internal memory,
I figured I just shut down and download a fresh copy of the ROM.
and put it in an external SD card then power on the phone back into recovery.
Only thing is it wont power on anymore, the screen is just black, plugging in USB and computer just makes connected/disconnected noise.
(Devices say its "Qualcomm HS-USB DQLoader 9008")
Also tried taking out putting in the battery.
(I know my mistake is I never re-installed the backup) I've run out of ideas, please help.
I have a very similar problem. I had my battery checked thinking that could be the problem. My battery shows that is no good. I tried a new one and still nothing. I can't help but think if it were a missing program it would still come on at least. Lucky for me its covered under insurance. I'd still like to know what happened and if I could fix it.
I'd like to know too if I could fix it myself, other than ''the jig'' or a repair service. currenty trying to revive it still
edit: currently trying this Heimdall thing, goodluck to me...
Have you checked the battery? If I wasn't sending mine back on an insurance claim I would take it apart. I have a Motorola that has a fuse next to the battery under the back of the case. Seems dumb, I know but how could changing the rom "short" out my battery. Dumb again I always thought bricking was only being able to bring up recovery.
I think the battery is fine, as CWM was still running after the error.
That's pretty much what happened to me. Maybe we got to the same problem 2 different ways. Hope you get it figured out.
THIS IS GT-I9300 SECTION..
c'mon there was an stickie on top of this section for you..
HERE.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1705
Your problem is that you flashed a rom for gt-i9300 (International) and you have some U.S. variant of s3. That in most cases bricks the phone.
Probably time for a service center visit.

Very Rare Problem with Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300

Hey Guys,
My Samsung Galaxy S3 is killing me, the problem is the following:
It was working fine one day and the next day, it started giving the error message "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped." along with network and wifi going off and on every 5 to 10 seconds, overheating from the sim card and sd card side, and rapid draining of the battery, i have tried all the solutions i found but nothing worked for my case, so i had to go to the ultimate fix which is to recover factory settings, so i have restarted the phone, done the factory settings, and that solved the problem, the phone started fine, i started installing my apps again, and everything seemed ok, after the battery went dead, i replaced it with a charged one (i have a major problem with my charging port, its damaged beyond repair, so i have 2 batteries, using an external charger) then i started the phone, and the new problem happened, the phone is stuck on samsung logo, naturally i went for the factory reset again, but this time (to my great luck) that did not solve it, and i can see the error " E: failed to mount /efs (Invalid argument)" two times.
i have tried copying the md5 file to the sd card and done "apply update from external storage" but it did'nt help.
could anyone help me solve this problem by using the sd card? because i can not us usb cable to use Odin, or all that stuff
by the way, my phone is stock not rooted, jelly beans 4.3
In a twist of events, i actually managed to repair the charging port at a repair shop, the phone is charging normally and detected by windows, now, i have noticed that both samsung kies and smart switch give the message that my device is unsupported, no idea how, so i started using Odin, i have managed to flash twrp recovery to the phone successfully, tried to root the phone while in this state but no luck, got a stock rom from sammobile and i was successful at flashing it to the phone using Odin, but that did not solve the problem, i still think that the problem is the efs partition, its corrupted somehow, i don't know why, my phone was not rooted and never flashed it with a custom rom to expect such corruption, anyways, now my S3 is not stuck on samsung logo, its now caught in a bootloop, ulternating between samsung logo and the android green gut opened logo, i flashed recovery again with CWM, and now the bootloop is not happening, instead when i power the phone it goes to CWM recovery after samsung logo and stays in recovery, i believe the problem got weirder and weirder, any suggestions? how to fix the efs mounting issue without changing or deleting my IMEI, since my phone is not rooted, i did not have any backup of efs.
HI, I have had a variety of problems with my i9000 and so has pretty much everyone
Instead of going down the Odin root and getting mixed up in PIT files, there's a solution which with enough effort can fix almost everything. Use Samsung Kies. The program will restore your phone, no matter what state its in to its factory settings. Mine was so bad it didn't actually have an OS at one point. Once all the drivers are installed and u have connected ur phone, go to tools>emergency firmware recovery and type in the model and serial number. So GT-i9000 and ur serial number. Then put the phone into download mode and then click next and it will fix in about ten minutes. Be patient getting into D/L mode, because it is quite troublesome.
Hope I helped.

Sorry, after reading, u said u cant use a usb cable. But then how did you copy the file to your sd card. If u cant use a cable at all, like not even at a friends house or something then im sorry. But if you can try what i posted above.

Removing the sd card and using a card reader connected to your pc to put the files over the card is not an issue, but the phone's charging port which doubles as data connection is damaged and can't by changed because its motherboard point of connection is damaged by a stupid technician, so any solution to my problem (other than changing the whole board) would have to include the sd card to get thedata to the phone

If the phone is in such condition I would try and get it professionally repaired or get a new one. Butttt, because that's not how we do thing at XDA , i would suggest seeing if you could find a flashable file that consists of either stock firmware or a ROM u know is stable. For the S3 GT-i9300 i would suggest any of the ones in development on XDA, most worked for me, or a touchwiz based one thats stable. I think that might help. Also, try rooting it, if possible, and check the efs folder (i think it requires root to access) Check if files look corrupted or are missing compared to what they should be (google this)
Also, just checked, this might be what ur looking for:

Thank you for your reply, but you keep forgetting the dark and gloomy fact that the phone won't start cannot be connected to pc, so rooting the phone is not possible, and correct me if I'm wrong, flashing the rom needs pc as well, I'm guessing if i can restore the efs folder with a stock one that should solve it, but is it possible to navigate to that folder in recovery mode?

Please! Help with Galaxy S7 flashing Stock rom after root, only download mode works n

Hello I am New Here on this forum so please forgive me if I posted this in the wrong place.
My problem is that I probably bricked My phone and cant Marke IT work again. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 (Exynos, European model) and rooted it right after i bought it.
I flashed TWRP recovery, installed Titanium backup and Magisk.
Then I made Nandroid backup using TWRP, stored IT on an external sd card in the phone, also flashed this backup to see if IT works, nad everything worden out just fine.
Then I also made a backup of all system and user apps via Titanium backup. And after that began to delete the bloatware. First uninstalled Microsoft word and rebooted, still everything alright. Then uninstalled excel, rebooted also still everything worked fine. Then I decided to check if I can really restore those system apps and restored the previous nandroid backup with TWRP.
After IT finished it said no os installed are you sure you wish to reboot. And I was so dumb to reboot the phone.
It went to Samsung Galaxy logo then and the only thing I can do now is to go Into download mode.
I want to Flash stock Rom from Samsung now but my Windows 7 does not recognize the phone.I Tried with different usb cables, installed the Samsung drivers multiple Times but it still wont recognize it. I also dont know my phones imei and all those numbers i can only go Into download mode nothing else. And I threw that little sticker on the back of my phone away, searched for it in the trash twice and everything from my phone unboxing is there but THIS ONE is not there, its just not there. So i can also Do nothing with smart switch and such.
I have Odin on my Computer( which i also used to Root) but I cant flash anything in download mode as long as that f*cking computer won't recognize the phone.
And I also think that i might NOT have enabled USB debugging. Im not sure but it might be. I dont know how to do this externally without having access to my phone. And also wehen I leave download mode and try to boot into the normal system it Shows that battery that always shows up when you charge your phone, but it stays gray and seems not to charge at all.
Sorry for the long text but i am really desperate. I have no money at all to buy a new phone and I really need a phone with Access to Internet. Its basically a life or death situation, I need to get out of the place I am as in right now as fast as possible so I must make the device running again!!! I can't eben be sure if what im writing here is not being monitored.
So please I would appreciate any help that makes me save my phone, please help me!
