So we are all confused with the tablets that boot straight to SD from power button and others that boot from usb cable put in. Everyone wants to see the tablets boot straight to sd when they hit the power button.
As seen in the below video, I was able to turn a usb only boot tablet into an always boot to sd from power tablet by forcing my tablet to brick and then recovering it. this got me thinking... maybe Barnes and Noble isnt as inconsistent as I thought... maybe they made all tablets to boot from usb and something some of us have done caused them to now always boot without usb.

So, I need some tester. I am not responsible for the loss of your tablet, you do this at your own risk.
Requirements: You need to have an 8gb or 16gb nook tablet that can currently only boot to SD from usb. This means that with bootable sd in, you can not boot to sd by hitting the power button from an off state and you require the usb cable to be connected from an off state to boot to SD.

FIRST Make the SD card and then make sure you cant boot to it from the power button, and then make sure that you can boot to it from the usb
Second Make sure you make a backup of your tablet, I am not going to tell you to do anything that will brick you, but I am not going to be responsible for lost data... or atleast not bricks that I dont know how to get out of
Stop testing at any point that you become successful
Third TEST 1 Perform an 8 failed boots
With the SD card in and the tablet off, I want you to hold the power button down until you see the black N appear and maybe a white screen and the tablet turn off. This is one failed boot. Do this 7 more times and then let it boot the 9th time and allow it to factory restore. Now test to see if you can boot to sd with power button, if not, test with usb.
Fourth TEST 2 Unrooter http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380235
Root your tablet, then install the unrooter app, and then run the unroot script from the app
Test power and usb boot again
Fifth Test 3 Brick (8gb only)
Install cm7 rom, should brick on bootup, then flash back your recovered rom that you should have made before you started all this crap. Then test boot again for power or usb.
Fifth Test 3 brick (16gb only- Warning, I have not tried this)
Install my recovery rom for the 8gb NT, I think it might brick, then restore back with the recovery you should have made before starting all this.
Sixth Test 4: CWM, after installing CM7, clear cache, factory restore and clear devlic. Then restore back to your recovery and test.
Make sure you post as soon as something becomes successful. Do not proceed if something started working.
Please report back in this thread your findings.
Sorry Albert, I just noticed this thread. I will get a hold of an 8gb nt this weekend that I'm fairly sure only boots with usb.

Albert - thank you for looking into this. Bless you if this can be resolved. Just a quick note about your post, however: I think there are several places you talk about "boot to usb" when you meant "boot to sd". I've made the same typo lots of times myself.
I am one of the people who can only boot with USB attached. I will be HAPPY to try this out as soon as I can.
So interesting thing here, my nook tablet behaves differently depending exactly how long I hold down the power button and the home button.
If I hold it down for ~1 second after the "boot flash" (screen flashes)
it will boot to the sd card
if I hold it down much longer and it either turns off, or reboots (or tries recovery)
an odd thing is if I turn off the power, let it power off completely, wait an hour and turn it back on, it almost always boots SD and then any further reboot boots to stock.

Is this after any of Albert's experiments or just as you have it now? What root method did you use? 8GB or 16GB?
Ok, so I managed to pick up the 8gb NT today. It has been previously rooted. Here are the results of TEST 1:
First try, I must have miscounted because on what I thought was the 9th time, it loaded normally, and did not try to factory restore.
On the second attempt, @ power-on no.5, CWM loaded.
Third attempt, CWM loaded @ power-on no.2
Forth attempt, CWM loaded @ power-on no.4
At no point was the usb lead attached. Also I was only using the power button, never touching 'n'.
Will I remove the card, do a factory restore and proceed to TEST 2?

16 GB root through the SD card, I've since done a complete factory restore from the 8 boot recovery partition and the behavior persists this way.
I haven't had a chance to mess with it, since my wife sold her nook which I used for reading books while I messed with mine...
I got a new 16GB class 4 card on which I've backed up my apps with TB. I hope I will have some time to do some tests in the next few days. I have a bootable 32GB card (SanDisk class 4) with CM7 alpha final on it that I'll use as my test card for booting.
My Tablet is a 16GB model, so I'll likely have to try the "brick" with the 8GB image of CM7.

I imaged it to a 2GB Kingston card. No idea what class it is because I haven't tested it. Stuck it into the 8GB NT, booted it *without* the power cable and it boots to SD just fine.
I then stuck in the 32GB Sandisk class-4 card onto which I installed CM7 alpha final... and it booted to stock.
It would seem we still might have a card issue, not just an internal issue. Tried turning off the 8GB NT, ejected the 32GB card, re-inserted it, still booted to stock. Turned the tablet off, removed the 32GB card, replaced the 2GB card and it immediately booted into the CWM recovery tool.
I then rooted by applying the zip using CWM from the 2GB card. Rooted successfully and asked CWM to reboot. Tablet rebooted to the (rooted) stock. I turned off the Tablet, turned it back on with the 2GB card still inserted and it, again, booted immediately to the CWM menu.
ALL BOOTS (except from CWM menu) WERE DONE WITH JUST THE POWER BUTTON. No finagling with the "N" button required.
I don't know if this helps, Albert. I'll still plan on eventually testing on my 16GB model. Also, when I have a free moment, I'll see if the 2GB card boots on my 16GB NT. If it does, what I would find interesting is if there is a way to get cards in general to boot more reliably across the board.
Edit: BTW - the 32GB Sandisk does boot to CM7 using the power cable.
Edit 2: Yes, indeed, the 2GB CWM root utility card boots great on my 32GB tablet without using the power cable (just pressing power).

Booted off SD just by powering on. '8 failed boots' was not required.
You know, just had a thought. I can try writing the CWM root image to the 32GB Sandisk SD card to see if it truly is the card at fault or how the partitions are set up. I'll also expand the last partition to fill the entire card as a test.
Is there anything fundamentally different in how the boot partition is set up for your root image over the CM7 (external SD) image, Albert? I want to make sure my tests actually are valid for comparison's sake and that I'm not just making the proverbial comparison between two dissimilar fruits...
I have CM 7 and have tested booting on two NTs that I have. I also have 32GB, 16GB and 8GB SD cards (each created from the same image and then increasing the 4th partition to full capacity for the card), and each behaves the same as the other depending on which NT I use. One NT always boots directly to CM7 using any of the cards, the other does not. However, if I first tether the one that doesn't normally boot to CM7, and immediately remove the tether when the first screen comes on, the unit will boot to CM7 (as expected) but will the always boot to CM7 again without tethering (even after a reboot to NT mode, a shutdown and then a new power on) until the unit is charged. After a charge I then have to re-tether the NT once, removing the tether quickly at power on, and from then on tethering is not required (again, until the next charge) just like before.
This behavior is fully repeatable for me and has been checked over the course of several weeks. It's magic I'm sure.

This has been working for me when using the CelticWebSolutions' CM7 SD, but I found that it does not work for the Succulent "CM9 SD" (created using the method posted here).

I had trouble getting succulents dual boot setup to boot at all. Neither from power button nor usb cable. I finally got it to work by burning celticwebsolutions cm7 image to sd (which booted perfectly from the power button), and modifying it with MiniTool Partition Manager per succulents instructions. It worked perfectly. Now I have stock rooted 1.4.2 on emmc and cm7/cm9 on sd. See my description here.
Perhaps this is not the place for this oddity/question, but I am attempting to root my 16GB NT and it will not boot to SD by *any* method. Neither Power, nor Power+N work, and when I try USB method, it will boot to stock after about 2-3 minutes, whether I've left the cable plugged in or not. Ideas?

In my experience, if the NT cannot boot off an SD card with powered USB then the problem lies with that SD card's format and/or content. You would be better off researching & asking your question in the forum thread that covers the SD-card rooting method you're using.
I am using Albert's R3 SD card (4.6 I think) method, one I created from his video instructions not one received from Albert. But I did locate Albert's troubleshooting thread and will try reposting the issue there, thanks. Otherwise, I'd be happy to help with the experiment!

I too was not able to create a bootable R3 card, until I abandoned using PowerISO to assemble files for the R3 disk image -- see my post here re: the alternative method suggested by Albert.

I just book the 8G nook tablet. I comes with 1.4.2 so from reading different threads I thought the it would be easier to root with 1.4.0 so I tried the 1.4.0 SDcard.
Ever since my tablet won't turn on. I even tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470910 But no luck.
Any ideas or suggestions of what to try?

Will the unit still boot from the 1.4.0 sd card? If so, you could try to reflash that again. Otherwise, I would keep trying to hold down both of those buttons (without the sd card in) for even longer. I had some instances where I thought mine was bricked (I have the 16 gb model), but eventually it came around. No real rhyme or reason to it.

Well assuming by this thread that Adam's 1.4.0 Booted and trashed your system.... you'll either have to try taking it back in and playing real real stupid, like too stupid to program the vcr stupid, or you'll just have to wait until someone makes recovery for the 8GB nooks.
Let me explain, the Boot Loader files for 1.4.0 are designed to run for the 16GB devices only, it wasn't until 1.4.2 (which is available for both devices) that B&N modified the Boot Loader files to run on both 16GB and 8GB. Therefore when MLO tries to initiate memory it's trying to initiate for the 16GBs 1GB memory as opposed to the 512MB of the 8GB device, this will cause the device not to boot.

If thats the case all you need do is remove sd card, remove USB cable and hold power for 15 seconds. Then wait a couple of secs and power it back on with the power button again. If like mine it will boot back up fine and isn't bricked.

Ok so there is a simple solution to this with the SD Root that is provided by Indirect. After you have a CWM SD Card by using winimaging (or what ever its called)take the MLO and the u-boot.bin from the 1.4.2 update package and place them inplace of the MLO and u-boot.bin on the SD Card. Once you have done that get the update.zip from B&N and flash that. That should fix most of your problems.
PS. The reson that he cannot get it to work is that the update.zip's uboot and MLO are form 1.4.0 which did not support the correct addressing.

No nothing is in there, when you use the 1.4.0 SDcard it loads the update image and replaces the current image. I thought there would be check so it wouldn't put a bad image that wouldn't work in place but I guess there isn't any safety checks on the built in update firmware routine.

Are the new files posted yet with the correct addressing for the 8G? Or is there instructions on how to get them from clean 8G?

Yes my NT is bricked, I have tried numerous times to shut it down (incase the screen was blacked instead of off) and turning it back on.
I have tried both the factory reset (power and home) and just the power button.
I as much as I can guess, when I did the firmware update above I messed up the internal booting. So I need to have the files for 8G so I can boot off of an SDcard.
I checked the B&N website if they had the 1.4.2 files (MLO and u-boot.bin) but they only have one updates file which I figure is for 16G.
Yup you're screwed take it into B&N and hope they'll replace it.

Just looking at a few other threads, I think several people have made the same mistake and are looking for solutions on this. If you can give some additional details as to what you had to do to get going again, it would be helpful.
It still isn't working, but we have the first step done which is getting the 8GB to boot off the SDcard, they are now working on the Ubuntu recovery SDcard.
I will post back here when there is any more progress.

I jast passed a copy of all the internal partitions onto Adam so you should now be able to completely restore you're 8GB NT back to stock. Or if you now have adb access via SD card I posted the files on the forum so you could quite easily restore the system completely yourself.

Unfortunately I don't know of any full images for SDcards that have be released yet for 8GB. I only know of the 2uboot which "crashes" when it reads the internal image to create the menu.
If anyone can help me get something else to work like maybe CWM that would be appreciated.

i was attempting to downgrade the software back to 1.4.0 with the acclaim download and my nook tablet went to black screen. now the only thing it does is occasionaly bing when i plug it to the computer. i cant tell if the thing is on or off. What do i do?
send it back to b&n and tell them it won't boot. that what I did and they gave me a new one. if you search thru the forum, you'll see that I missed the warning too and bricked. posted a warning after that and you missed it too.
Damn google search and my lazy ass, went straight for the fix.

Root for Nook Tablet 8GB (w/ Android Market)
So ever since I bought the 8GB Nook Tablet last week I've been checking this forum daily to see whether there's a root method that I could use to sideload apps etc.. But it seems that no current root method for the 8GB tablet existed, and I even came across a video showing that none of the current root methods for the 16GB version works on the 8GB.
So when I saw bauwks's updated 2nduboot that allows booting from an SD card, I started poking around to see if I could use that to root the tablet. While bauwks's kernel and ramdisk cannot boot into the stock Nook userland on the 8GB version (it reboots right after the "READ FOREVER" screen), they do allow me to boot into Android's init process, and that's enough to root the tablet and install Android Market. Basically, what I did was package the files I needed as well as a small installer script into bauwks's boot.img.
The result (root + Android market) is demonstrated in this video.
Compatibility
This method is for rooting the stock firmware version 1.4.2 that is shipped with the Nook Table 8GB when you buy one from B&N. It is not supposed to be used with other ROMs such as CM7, nor the Nook Tablet 16GB.
Included
- Root (su + Superuser.apk)
- Android market
Options
There are two equivalent ways to apply this root method.
1. The first, and easier method is to burn an image to your SD card.
2. The second method is to partition and format your SD card and copy over the files yourself. This latter is more complicated than you think as the SD card must be partitioned and formatted in a very particular (and peculiar) way for it to boot.
Instructions for option 1 - burning a pre-built microSD card image
0. Before you proceed, know that THIS IS EXPERIMENTAL SOFTWARE THAT PROBABLY VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY AND MAY PERMANENTLY OR TEMPORARILY BRICK YOUR TABLET. Even though it worked for me, it may not work for you, and worse, it is quite possible that it could cause your tablet to boot-loop or die. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY POSSIBLE DAMAGES TO YOUR TABLET / ANYTHING ELSE CAUSED BY THIS METHOD. BY USING IT YOU AGREE TO ASSUME ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS.
1. You need a microSD card. The image itself is ~55MB, which means any card above 64MB will work. Backup anything you have on that SD card because THIS WILL ERASE ALL DATA ON YOUR microSD CARD.
2. Download this image. MD5: 1a4f5cb32f09d3003b11aa782fe9566f
3. Burn downloaded image to microSD card. This page explains how to burn an image on Linux, Mac and Windows. Ignore the Nook Color-specific stuff, don't download the Nookie Froyo image, and replace in the instructions the nookie froyo image with the image you've just downloaded. THIS WILL ERASE ALL DATA ON YOUR microSD CARD.
4. Turn off the tablet.
5. Put the microSD card with the burnt image into the tablet.
6. Connect tablet to computer using a USB cable. The tablet should boot up on its own; if not, press the power button to power on.
7. After the initial black screen with the "n" logo, you should see a brown box in the middle of a white screen. (If you do not, your tablet is not booting off the microSD card and you probably did something wrong.) After you hit the "READ FOREVER" screen, WAIT ABOUT TWO MINUTES. Even though nothing changes on the screen, a script is copying over root and Google stuff onto the /system partition.
8. After two minutes, hold down on the power button until the tablet turns off.
9. Take out the microSD card and power on again.

2. Download this zip file, and extract contents to root of the 50MB microSD card partition.

4. Put the microSD card with the burnt image into the tablet.
5. Connect tablet to computer using a USB cable. The tablet should boot up on its own; if not, press the power button to power on.
6. After the initial black screen with the "n" logo, you should see a brown box in the middle of a white screen. (If you do not, your tablet is not booting off the microSD card and you probably did something wrong.) After you hit the "READ FOREVER" screen, WAIT ABOUT TWO MINUTES. After Rooting
You will not see any visible difference in the interface when the tablet powers back on, nor will your firmware version change, but you should now be rooted. To launch the Android / Play Market, do the following: "n" -> Search -> hit top-left button on screen -> select "apps" -> type "market" in search bar -> select "Market". For a step-by-step guide on other things you'd probably want to do after you root (e.g., installing 3rd-party .apks, making the "n" button start a custom launcher), check out this thread by RevenantOne.
Common Questions / Problems
Here are some of the common issues people have run into according to this thread. Read this through if you have a question or problem before posting it!
1. Am I rooted? / I did everything correctly, but nothing changed after I reboot!
If you saw a brown box and then the "READ FOREVER" screen, you are already rooted. There will not be any visible differences in the interface / software version. To launch the Android / Play Market, do the following: "n" -> Search -> hit top-left button on screen -> select "apps" -> type "market" in search bar -> select "Market". Check out this thread by RevenantOne for other things you probably want to do after you root.
2. I don't see the brown box screen; instead the tablet just boots up normally.
There are a number of possibilities:
a. Some people have had better luck combining the files from this method with a root image for the 16GB tablet. Theoretically this could work for everyone, so make sure you do try this one out if your tablet refuses to boot (i.e., you don't see the brown box). Instructions can be found in post #131.
b. Your microSD card may be incompatible. As strange as it may seem, people have posted on this thread that certain microSD cards will simply not work. It appears to be somewhat random which cards work and which don't, so you might have to try out several cards from a different brand or with a different size before you find one that does work.
3. How to restore the microSD card back to its normal capacity from 50mb?
According to user Ashfire[/B], simply formatting the SD card through the Nook Tablet ("n" -> Settings -> Device Info -> SD Card -> Unmount SD card -> Erase SD card) should suffice to reclaim the normal capacity of your card. Otherwise you can use any disk partitioning tool for your OS to re-partition the card.

My 8GB NT doesn't boot with your files on my SD.
I have been struggling to get any sort of alternate boot-up working...
I can boot to Cyanoboot (which is useless as I haven't gotten any boot.img to load from it), or... I can get into CWM Recovery with two specific flashing_boot.img and boot.img files.
Nothing else boots properly... the tablet either:
A) Sits there doing nothing with the SD card in the slot
or
B) Boots into Bauwks' Box, and after a couple seconds it reboots.
Your files are (A)... no boot at all.
is it stupid to ask what happens if I just place the extracted file directly onto the nook?

The most likely reason is that you didn't create the boot partition correctly. I had the same symptoms at first, but then I decided to follow the instructions in the linked video to the letter (the instructions are also at omappedia.org/wiki/SD_Configuration), including setting the cylinder count and all that, and I was able to boot everything.
To verify, I just deleted all the partitions on my SD card, formatted it normally using the tablet itself, and copied over the files. The tablet refused to boot; the screen remained black. I re-partition it and format it using the instructions linked above, copy over the files and the tablet boots into the rooting script again.

Thank you for posting this, especially your video showing how it looks on the 8GB NT. Where I get lost is at step #1 - the video showing how to create the 50MB vfat partition.
If it weren't for that, which makes my head spin, I'd be more comfortable going for the 8GB NT and tackling this.

Yeah, that bit is quite confusing. To alleviate that I've created a pre-built microSD card image that you can directly burn to your microSD card without having to go through the weird partitioning and formatting. I've updated the original post with the link and instructions.

Used the SD image, and it didn't work. Boots up fine both times, but I have no market.
Edit: After watching your video, should I see the box image when using the image? Because that never showed up.

If you do not see the box, the tablet is not booting from the SD card. Can you elaborate on exactly what you're doing to burn the image to your SD card (i.e., which OS you're using and if OS X or Linux the exact command you're running)?

Ouch...I don't have access to a Windows machine at the moment and so won't be able to debug the issue for a while. If anyone else has had any success / failures on Windows, please confirm by replying in this thread.
Alternatively, I guess you could always reboot your machine into a Linux LiveCD for now...

I tried the Win32 application on Windows 7 X64. Then on Linux Mint 12 KDE using the command line.
I have an 8GB Nook Tablet and made the foolish mistake of attempting to try and root it with acclaim-update.zip. Now my Nook will no longer boot and I've tried every unbricking method available. No progress was made.
I was a bit too eager to eager and rushed headfirst into it without researching it more thoroughly. If there's no fix for it, then that's fine. I just wanted to run through ever resource possible before giving up on it. I have spent the past few hours scouring the internet and coming up with little to nothing.
Have you tried booting CM7 from sdcard?
What things have you tried to make it boot?

Shouldn't you just be able to put the unmodified acclaim_update.zip on your sdcard? It should work and fix your nook. When you put the sdcard in, make sure the device is off, and then connect it to the power adapter to get it to turn on
IF its completly dead/ erased boot erea then your only option will be jtag.

So far I've tried the Ubuntu method of unbricking it, factory reset, and booting with the 1.4.2 zip file to return it to factory settings. None of them have worked.
But I'll try CM7 and see if it works.
Am in the the same shoes... got a bricked NT 8GB... looking forward to restoring 1.4.2...
attempts to restore the firmware to factory:
Cyanoboot + altboot + B&N 1.4.2
Followed guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562130 , using (a) the img from dropbox and (b) nooktablet_1_4_2_update.zip from B&N. No luck. The process stops on the initial screen on cyanoboot, where it shows 'Loading (sd)...'. I don't even get to enter the menu that shows the boot options.

Next I downloaded the img link above, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24912163&postcount=5 , no luck also, the tick appeared on the flash 'Installing new software' screen after 4 minutes. After I removed the mSD card, the NT did a data cleanse, and got an error message about 40% into the factory restore prompting me to contact B&N. It then goes into the reboot loop (this is where I am now).

No luck. NT don't even boot up to mSD with the mSD card slotted in.
I've tried the above multiple times, downloading the files few times as well. Am still stuck in the reboot loop.
Would like to seek help from gurus here for pointers... Am stuck at this point.

just a note : when i made it the first time with my xp pro pc, it did not work ( boot ) and then i made it in mint - ubuntu os - and the little sd card then worked.

I have a tablet that appers to be bricked I put Cm7 on internal flashed it worked then I needed to flash the gaps and when I went to recovery and tried to flash and since then it boots up to the N screen then I see the white busy box screen then blank. Nothing nada. So now I have a $250.00 paper weight:banghead::banghead:

Can you get to CWM using Indirect's NT-CWM-SD package from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583
Get a micro SD card, fire up gParted (or whatever partition manager), put a new MSDOS partition table on it. Then make a new FAT32 partition at the beginning of the disk. Set the boot and lba flags. Copy the contents of Indirect's zip onto the disk. Stick it in the NT. Hold power + n for 10 seconds and wait for the grey "n" to show up on the screen for a second. Then turn it on.
If that takes you to CWM, then you've got options.
using a properly formatted SD card should solve most issues.. its the great thing about the nook.
1.make sure your using a good SD card. sandisk 8gb class and up would be best
2. make sure you grab the 8gb nook cm7 image.
3. preferably use a component based card reader. by that i mean one other then a laptops.. the laptop ones tend to be picky and lots of people in the nook color days had issues and most were resolved by using a computer one over a laptop one
4. with the nook OFF plug the usb cable into the nook then into the usb port on a computer

Negative. I wish you were correct but - in this case - you are not.
Your advice is probably appropriate for those who cannot get an SDCard to boot properly. However, the O.P. has a bricked device and his original post is most descriptive. His NT8 will not boot to the INTERNAL EMMC. (I have the same problem.)
There are several of us here on XDA who are not novices with this issue. The O.P. has listed the various steps that he has followed and they are much more involved than a simple SDCard format issue.
BTW, most formatting issues are when users are attempting to format with Windows. I use Linux exclusively and I can ALWAYS build a boot SDCard without issues.
Also in the same boot as the O.P.
I also am having this problem. Been going through it for mths now. I've tried every possible fix people could come up with. I have been talking to a youtuber albertwertz. he would like me to send in my nook tablet to him to fix and try out different things. I would like to but cant afford it at the moment. Dang I hope someone finds a fix for this or make a cm9 sd bootale img or something dont get me wrong i like booting cm7 from sd but is this all im subject too. Lost Nook 1.4.0 partition
Hi, Lavero.
I think I may have accidentally deleted the default nook partition. I can still boot up via SDCard and goes into CM7. How can I recover those default partition? Do you have those commands within Terminal Emulator or any other options?
If I do not put in my SDCard, with power cable connected, the nook tablet 16GB keep rebooting. I still want to recover my Nook default OS so that I can repartition it the next time I go to BN.

After succesfully burning and running the img from iamafanof.wordpress jellybean-android-4-3-for-nook-tablet. I decided I wanted to have more control over partition size etc and load a ROM from an SD card instead.
So I followed or at least thought I followed the instructions here. iamafanof.wordpress how-to-guide-bootable-cm7cm9cm10-sdcard-for-nook-tablet. However, I thought I was creating a bootable SD card with the ROM on it, but I installed the ROM on the internal nook memory by mistake. The nook tablet runs CM10 well.
The issue is I intended to be able to switch from CM10 on the SD card to the Nook OS like I could originally with the SD card img I mentioned previously. I cannot get the Nook Tablet 8gb to boot from the SD card. I only get CyanaBoot with the options to boot internet or boot internal recovery. The recovery options does nothing and the internal boot takes me into CM10. The SD options are greyed out. I have tried probably 5 different SD boot images including 2 that I know have worked previously. Also tried 3 different SD cards 2 of which I know worked previously. I am powering completely off and then plugging in USB to turn back on as described through the forum. I have tried using the Nook Recovery and it goes through the steps it looks as if it restoring to original state, but it only restores CM10 to original state.
My question is how to I get my Nook to boot to SD or can I somehow use my working CM10 ROM to get things restored to original NOOK OS. My goal is to wipe the Nook clean and go back to original state and then correctly create a CM10 SD boot card. I am a newbie to the Nook, but feel like I have explored all of the most easy to find options on the this forum to fix this.

Sorry for not being clear. After I accidentally installed CM10 internally on the nook I can no longer boot from an SD card. I have tried your guide and at least 5 others now. I follow the steps to a T. I have made 3 working SD boot cards for the Nook prior to installing CM10 internally. I understand the process. I have 3 different SD cards and none of which make a bootable SD card. Somehow now that CM10 is installed and the cyanaboot comes up on reboot with the options to boot internal or boot internal recovery. The SD options are greyed out. No matter how many different SD cards I use and boot instructions I follow. It will not read the SD card on boot. It does read it fine once the OS boots. I do not currently have gapps installed. So even If i wanted to keep the internal CM10 install I still need to be able to boot from SD to install gapps.

Yes. That is the method I am using. power down. Insert USB. Nook powers up. Cyanotboot Menu comes up. SD boot options are not available. At this point I am ok with just having CM10 on it, but I really need to get the google apps loaded onto the Nook. It simply will not boot from SD or recognize the SD card during boot. It does recognize from within the android OS and on my Windows machine. It shows Nook as an external device and I can access the SD card that way. It just will not boot from the SD card.
Just confirm: you've tried Succulent's pre-made CM10.x SD image (suc as cm_acclaim_10.2.0-RC0_13OCT2013_HD_SDC_IMG.7z from http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013...id-4-3-for-nook-tablet-imgsdc-boot-09aug2013/ -- unpack it with 7-zip then write the image to SD with win32diskimager) and it didn't boot either?

I installed cyangenmod awhile back on my nook. Now I need to get back to the Nook stock android. I tried the procedure listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663836 (It has worked in the pass on my tablet on the same SD cards.) When I try it I shut my nook completely off and I put the SD card in power it on using both the button method and the USB cable method to the same results, The Nook logo then directly to the cyanoboot menu. I used to be able to boot from the SD card just fine before cyangenmod.
Any help or tips would be very appreciated!

wut he said. thats pretty much a done deal unless u fragged ur NT. otherwise more research is needed. as well as steps u took to get it to where u got it.
