basically I have 2 routers with different SSIDs set up in my house
I was wondering if there is a way I can have it automatically switch to the one with a better connection through an app or script of some sort
or a way that I can at least make a shortcut on my launcher to do this?
now that I think about I could toggle wifi off and on but is there a better way?

Thanks guys. Best Wifi helped solve my wifi sticking problem. I have our main router upstairs and an access point downstairs. Now our phones switch seamlessly among the wifi spots.

although I'm just one guy
that was exactly the same situation I was in
thanks all, this solve my problem!
having to get used of htc sense 4 witch has this ability by default, i thought all androids are the same, but i was wrong. vanilla galaxy nexus won't switch between wifi networks. i wish android should enable this feature by default, switching saved networks based on better wifi signal.

hmm, best wifi works good, but i feel consumption of battery is higher now.
and one annoying thing is that toast always appears "best wifi: no apn found" if wifi is on and has no connection... for example if on the road...
i always have wifi on.
i know i gives apps like llama who can handle wifi on off cell or location based, but not good working, so i have wifi always on and that's best.
Thanks for the recommendation, has been driving me crazy constantly switching btwn SSIDs manually or turning WiFi off and on. Ridiculous that we have to install an app for such basic functionality, and doesn't work if 2nd AP is a repeater with exact same SSID for me as main SSID gets disabled in order for the switch to happen. But using connectify me pro as repeater so not a huge deal right now, changing SSID is super easy

P.S. battery is being consumed when signal constantly drops and/or pages need constant freshing to load and/or manually switching networks anyway

Hi,
is there a widget similar to the one preinstalled on the defy to toggle wifi/gps etc. ?
The white/ coloured ones don't fit my theme.
THX
Widgetsoid is the best toggling app I've come across. It's got a huge number of toggles and options you can customize, including the colors and themes of the toggles, so I think it would be perfect for you.
2G/3G widget
When trying to switch from 2G to 3G or back Widgetsoid only sends you to the operator menu where you have to change the network type
Any other widget that can do the switch on a single click (as all the other widgets work)?
Wigetsoid ftw.
extended controls

It works pretty well and has quite a few options!

Can I ask a really stupid question? What would you want that for?
The only thing I can think of is if you are often in an area where either the 3G or the 2G data connection is often - but not always - messed up.
And that can't be too often (this actually did happen to me this summer: _some_ evenings my 3G data connection would just die and/or not let me log in. Then it was pretty handy to be able to force phone/dongle to just use 2G).
Or is it just for convenience? Use 2G for calls/standby (save battery, right?), flick on 3G when you want to surf or sync?

If your data connection dies somethimes you should use 2G and 3G at the same time. ( There is optin in data settings: use only 3G or use only 2G, or use both.)
Yes, 3G is a big component like Wi-Fi so it uses your battery a lot. But I use program which turns off all internet connections while screen is off. It saves way of my battery juice. But if you want always sync your programs put there a widget on your homescreen which is shortcut to data setting and when you know that you'r not using your device for next couple hours, just change from 3G to 2G only.
I hope this helped you

Slightly OT (mods please don't hit me, I'm a stoopid noob):
My problems this summer was before I had my lovely shiny Defy, and they were really tricky in that they only affected 3G data, and only sometimes (but regularly enough that I complained, and got a nice reply that they were working on it and that I had identified the problem correctly - no "have you tried this or that" -bull****).

That's a good way to save, but I think 3G (voice-) standby also eats more than 2G standby. At least a friend of mine who is a hopeless chatterbox said that turning off all 3G stuff in her never-used-for-data phone almost doubled her battery life - and it isn't like she is ever in an area with marginal coverage, downtown Helsinki all the time.
Couple of quick questions. Is there a way to make my phone stop searching for wifi. I turn it off then look at my phone and it tells me there is open wifi. I never use wifi so I have no need for this. Also is there a fix for the car dock not charging while using gps

You on ICS or GB? Go to settings>wifi>hit menu capacitive button>advanced>check never auto turn on Wifi. That should take care of it. On the same menu at the top there's the option to notify you if there is wifi when launching apps. You can uncheck it too.
If you're talking about the iBolt car dock sold through Verizon, Google for their (iBolt's) web site, and leave a message explaining the problem, including your address. They'll exchange for a new dock which charges properly.

Does that only work in ICS??
I would like to eliminate WiFi turning on by itself myself as a I NEVER use it, but I don't seem to have those settings in GB.
I occasionally swap to an earlier version of the kernel I'm running as I know it breaks WiFi, but there has to be an easier way to do it than that...............

I was thinking that those settings were in GB as well. I can't remember for sure because I've been on ICS for a good bit. I know the advanced menu is there. Just not sure what all was on it.

Yea I'm looking at that exact same screen in GB, except that one line isn't there.
It goes right from best Wi-Fi performance to Wi-FI proxy, that additional line your SS shows isn't there in GB.
Is there something in the Sleep Policy, or perhaps the main Wi-Fi screen (not Advanced). I remember having that option somewhere.
Might it be in the Power settings?
Open up the regular Dock program, go into the settings and disable the automatically turn on wifi setting. Even though it's only in there, it also turns it on when you use the car dock.
Mine does not. Running new 4.1 4.04. Every time I download some thing and the screen turns off I either have my download pause or download failed not completed. Is there a way to fix this??
What custom ROM are you using? Mine does the same (running MeanROM 2.7). Some ROMs are coded to purposely shut off pretty much everything except regular phone/text communication when the screen is off to save optimal battery. Personally I haven't looked into it enough to figure out how to change it though... :-\

That option has already been selected. Does not work on Wifi or 3g.
I use juice defender ultimate and I haven't noticed them stop if I customize an app to be able to run with screen off.
If I'm downloading a torrent I plug it in the wall and select never turn off in display settings. Just turn brightness down to like 5%.
I noticed it was an issue on the og EVO for me. Idk about anyone else, kinda just fixed it without asking about it.
When I was running a Sense Rom, even with those settings above, downloads would stop. I think it has to do with how many other apps you have running. As soon as Sense decides it needs some RAM to run a different app, it will kill the app currently downloading regardless of whether the DL is finished or not. At least that seemed to be my experience, and yes turning off the screen would also kill my dl's sometimes. I would recommend going to CM10 or another AOSP ROM. I have found that the latest CM10 builds Kushdeck is putting out are pretty much solid. I have been using it for a daily driver for about a month now, and I don't miss Sense at all.

I miss being able to near instantly load netflix, crackle, crunchyroll or youtube as soon as I get home, so much easier then plugging the laptop in. I guess I could always buy a atv or roku or upgrade to a smart tv. Not a good move for someone in between jobs lol
Hey,
I've recently upgraded my Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 all to Android 4.4 and as soon as I upgraded my Wi-Fi has been awful.
The Wi-Fi is incredibly unstable, steaming media has major buffering / intermittency issues, messages sent over instant messaging apps are sometimes instant and sometimes take 30+ seconds to send.
Skype is the most telling of the issues as it randomly loses connection and my notifications literally never come through...

I just installed three different versions of Wi-Fi Keep Alive, the first one has 3 normal options then like 5 workarounds.
I'm trying the normal mode at the moment, so far so good it hasn't disconnected me YET
I picked always on + first workaround.
It worked great and haven't changed it since. That's 3 weeks now and it hasn't dropped out once
Hope that helped you.

Hello Guys,
I am unable to change network type from 2G to 3G or LTE. I've tried everything I can think of like changing sim slots, reboot, etc.
Please suggest, is it a bug or is there a trick.
Thanks in advance
I am fully stock running OOS 3.0.2 and everything is much faster but I have one issue. Internet is working strange when I am connected to wifi. It has normal download speed but it is still "working" slow. I don't know how to describe that. When I go to Youtube for example and tap one video it will "load" video for long time before it starts but when video really start it will go normally without buffering and problems. Same thing with Instagram or any other app. When I go to instagram it will refresh posts for long time but once it has refreshed I could do everything else with normal speed.
