so my nook color went belly up on me.. my geek squad warranty got me a full replacement or exchange for an upgrade. so i took upgrade.. but i did little to no research as i had expected them to just fix it.. so asking the sales rep when isaw the tablets i asked " whats the diff from the 8gb to 16gb" his reply "storage space" .. now i come home head to xda only to find out theres a ram difference.. question is.. is there a huge difference in the ram usage? do any android apps really need more then 512 ram? or should i just fork over the extra 50 bucks and get the 16gb
my two cents worth, pay the fifty to get the sixteen . . .
If you ask me, the extra $50 is worth it. You have double the storage and double the RAM. In addition, development on the 16GB model is further along and you'd have more choices of ROMs and get better support if you're stuck. This is just my opinion though.

It shouldn't matter. They just pop their SD card in and you wait till it's finished, then you're out of there.
Or could you repartition it yourself.

dont need BNs warranty i have the geek squad "i can drive over it with a truck then take a hammer to it" warranty. just curious if registering has anything to do with flashing the internal memory
If you plan on flashing over the internal OS, there is no need to register. When I got my nook, I made a bootable sdcard with CWM, booted into it, mounted to my PC, transferred CM7 to the internal storage and flashed it. From there I eventually flashed CM9 and only saw the B&N OS when I tested albert's nandroid backup.
tl;dr no need to register if you plan on flashing a rom.

What happens if i flash a rom every two or three days.
I odin back to stock every time
was just wondering. Am i going to spoil it or anything ?
Or am i good to have fun
i do this too.
I'd say it does do wear and tear, because every 2 days, your system is like brand new... all the data it used to be personalized is gone every2 days.
but i can think of a lot more reasons why it wouldn't wear and tear.
overall, it DOES, but very little.
So... what happens. Does the phone go bad after 200 odins ?
400?
1000?
anything like this happen to someone ?
Just don't repartition when you ODIN. That has say a 1/50 chance to hard brick you. Otherwise don't worry about any wear or tear imo.
Edit: future posts seem to take serious issue with the 1/50 remark. I have no special insight. The source was just a developer telling someone they think there is a 5% chance to mess up your phone by trying to repartition (context was to inform OP if and how to flash so often and you're taking it out context if you think after 50 repetitions you will brick your phone lol. Sorry, my fault to confuse others reading the post). Hence my recommendation not to repartition unless you have to. To elaborate since people are getting their panties in a wad over it, my un qualified guess is that your concern should not be wear but rather an interruption to the repartition process and whether or not that could lead to a hard brick. Thanks to everyone who has such a positive attitude about helping people...
Not sure what could possibly wear and/or tear. There are no moving parts in this thing.

NAND and NOR memory has a limited number of read/writes. Now that amount is undetermined if you dont know the make/brand/quality of the memory. The read/write count is a very high number in most cases...
Every 2 days may be a bit excessive in the long term though... lol
Edit:
Thought about it, and for informational/"not to just take my word" here is the info. Remember a "cycle" is a gate on/off meaning any write to that gate counts as a "cycle".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_memory
Write Endurance
The write endurance of SLC Floating Gate NOR flash is typically equal or greater than that of NAND flash, while MLC NOR & NAND Flash have similar Endurance capabilities. Example Endurance cycle ratings listed in datasheets for NAND and NOR Flash are provided.
* SLC NAND Flash is typically rated at about 100K cycles (Samsung OneNAND KFW4G16Q2M)
* MLC NAND Flash is typically rated at about 5K-10K cycles (Samsung K9G8G08U0M)
* SLC Floating Gate NOR Flash has typical Endurance rating of 100K to 1,000K cycles (Numonyx M58BW 100K; Spansion S29CD016J 1000K)
* MLC Floating Gate NOR Flash has typical Endurance rating of 100K cycles (Numonyx J3 Flash)

In theory you are right, but the lifespan of these things is on average anywhere from 10,000 to 1,000,000 cycles depending on which type you have. I would say go ahead and flash away but don't over do it.
I've always used odin to unbrick my phone. I've never read, anywhere, that repartirioning has a 1/50 chance to hard brick you.

I would think that devs flash WAY more than I do so as long as their phone is fine, who am I to worry lol. Plus ill have a new phone before I ever reach that kind of limit.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Physical wear tear? No. Its all static. Hard line limit of writes to ROM? From every previous phone I've had, yes. But that number is so high, that you would have to be flashing either for years or like 50+ times a day.
The only "wear" I would be worrying about is from dropping it or kids touching it b/c it looks like an iphone. lol

Lol Good job on the moto, "discredit what you dont understand". I was on xda years ago with my old HP ipaqs. Could it be I just went idle and created a new account years later? Besides, I posted accurate data WITH references. So go pack sand.
On another note, the point was to inform/educate. The finite number is quite large, but can vary greatly depending on quality control of the memory. 1/50 chance is utter crap (that would probably be more a software error than hardware fault), my statement was one of "dont over-do it".
so should i re-partion or no?

Are you running any ROMS? If so, try flashing a new one. If you are just at stock phone, try flashing the stock firmware over from the Motorola website. All directions are there and firmwares.
Also are you rooted or/and have an unlocked bootloader.
I am hoping it's a software glitch but it's probably a hardware issue.

can you repair it yourself is the wuestion.
Damn thats crucial. I know this is prob not the most helpful idea but I guess worth a try.. Have you downloaded the Touchscreen Booster app to see if it makes a difference? You can have it pushed to your phone via the Android Market on a computer, just select the Atrix and your phone should download it automatically. The dropdown box you need to change is right about where your top row of keys is so maybe just maybe.. Try the "super optimized" setting. Sorry I cant be more help, hope you get it resolved.

Welp, it's fixed, aside from a few qualms. One, the prox sensor doesn't work. Two, I didn't clean off the old adhesive stuff well enough and the screen is slightly bulged out. Not a big deal but it is what it is.
Overall, I kind of wish I would have just spent the 20 bucks extra and claimed insurance on it. Oh well. I'll probably do it sometime after tax season next year when I have some money to waste on it. For now, it'll do.

somebody pushed me into a pool with my clothes on a few weeks ago and I had my Samsung gs3 on me
I've tried drying it, took it apart, tried to dry the motherboard separately,... but nothing worked.
I got a new gs3 and the only thing I care about now is to retrive my photos if possible. The water damaged phone won't turn on and it won't connect to a computer. To make sure that the problem is the motherboard not the screen I've switched the motherboards to see if it works or connects to computer but it won't.
Does anybody know how I might be able to retrive my photos?
I think the solution might be to take the phone's internal memory out and maybe install it on a working board and recover photos from there but I dunno if that thought is doable??
Anybody knows of a repair shop that could do that for me?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear about that, things happen though.
Did some research for you and found this: http://digital-photography-school.com/recover-images-from-a-damaged-sd-card
but I am not entirely sure it will work. If anything, you would take the phone back to Samsung to have the data removed
unless you have lost your warranty.
Good luck anyway.
It's probably possible to recover the data from the integrated ssd drive through complex and very specialized tools aswell as lots of work.
This would involve desoldering the chip from the motherboard and hope it's not defective due to your attempts to use the device.

yep, dropbox could be a life saver. dont' forget you got 50gb if free storage for one year

need some input...i want a s4 so i started lookin around and saw that vzw will eventually offer a 32gb.
Should i wait for it or go ahead and get the 16?
Do you think itll be $250 like AT&T or $300?
i read that 45% of the 16gb already used, id that a prob for ppl? (im gonns root, so im assuming thatll help the bloat)
thx in advance
Well if you're worried about storage lets break this down.
16 GB on the standard. about 1.2 GB of that is going to be eaten up by the file system. The Rom itself uses around 4 or something so I think completely stock (and bloated) its something like 7 GB used, 7.5 GB Free
Now, I loaded every app that I use on a daily basis, and a few games with wifi download and I haven't even broken the 6 GB mark.
There's an SD card slot inside, so you can add up to a 64GB SD card.
All your pictures, music and most applications will be saved there once you insert it (normally).
So I ask you, is the extra 16GB worth the wait (and money)? Honestly I don't think that you'd ever run out of room but if you're worried then you can probably wait.
Verizon was doing the 16 GB iPhone 5 at 199 ($200.00) and the 32GB at $300.00 so I would expect to see the same thing with the S4

If the 32GB was available on launch day, I probably would have purchased that one. However, I don't really need the 32GB. I loaded all of the apps I have used in the past, and it is less than 2GB worth. I don't really download or play games outside of emulators. All of the roms are stored on the SD card. Most of my memory usage comes from movies, which my 64GB SD card holds just fine. Most pictures you take can be set to store on the SD card, but a few camera modes don't allow it. You can always move the files to the SD card after they have been captured to free up that space again. I think when you first turn on the phone, you have around 9GB of free space from the original 16GB. I still have about 7.5GB free and I don't think I will be digging much deeper into that.

The Google Edition is confirmed to only work on AT&T and T-Mobile. The Developer Edition isn't worth it as current firmware GS4s already have bootloader workarounds.

white. when i played with the "black" in store the shiny diamond cross pattern was distracting to me in the front. it's much harder to notice on the white version.

There's little reason to wait for one with more storage. Expandable memory is so cheap these days, it doesn't make sense. Plus, with the amount of things you can store in the cloud, physical storage simply isn't worth the time or money
[Looking for] broken/donor G-Tab for additional RAM upgrade
