Alright so I'm coming from a Droid 2. I come from the land of CWR and having to SBF before I could go back to a FroYo ROM from Gingerbread because we couldn't flash kernels.
Basically, this is my very first HTC phone and although its similar to a Moto phone, I am realizing more and more that things are much different. I'm unlocked and rooted running Bamf ICS but I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing lol. With S-OFF now, I want to be careful not to screw up my device and know exactly what I'm doing.
So my questions are...
What is an RUU?
What all is flashable through a recovery with S-Off?
If I don't have S-Off, what is this p(something)img.zip file that I'm always flashing?
Anything else you feel is important lol.
Sorry if this has been well explained somewhere else. I have just been reading through a lot of forums on here and it seems that most people are coming from HTC phones and already know the processes. If someone also coming from a Moto phone has any insights or explanations they would be greatly appreciated

a RUU is a rom update utility that returns you to stock factory settings that is flashed through the bootloader or by .exe file.
With s-off you can flash radios, hboots, splash screens, firmware, recoverys (through bootloader). And in recovery i think just kernels without having to flash the boot.img through adb
Not sure since i dont have this device. But i believe it is the firmware needed to run ICS roms without problems
The PH .img thing is the kernel. If you try to flash a Rom with an incompatible kernel it won't boot. Likewise, if your going between say to gb roma that use the stock kernel, you don't need to mess with the ph thing.

great to have you here man!! and s-off is great now that we have it. give the devs time and everything will be flashed in a one step process (kernel, rom, boot screens etc)
ph98img.zip is not the kernel ...but it can be...
ph98img.zip's are anything from kernels, spash screens, radios now, etc.
the new ics leaked firmware for example came in ph98img.zip format
it had included a new, ... well everything
so ph98img's are updates you run in the bootloader and dev's package different things in them.
Ok thanks, I'll be getting this phone sometime soon and coming from Moto the process of doing things seem way, way more confusing and more time consuming when it comes to backups and what not. Do you guys recommend when I first get the phone before even setting it all up to unlock BL, perm root, S-Off and flash my Rom of choice then doing a backup? Also are the backups the same as moto, just one click and it makes a zip to flash whenever?

Your right but he's talking about the ones you need to flash with roms, which are all kernels. But right nonetheless could be a 3mb kernel or 600mb ruu

You have to be locked to flash the radios right? Im still on the GB radio. Im iffy about flashing leaked radios.

md5s are different in radio and mdm9k images, for whatever thats worth
has anyone that ran the full RUU and unlocked tried to re-install an older gingerbread or ICS custom rom? if so did it work,or are you now "stuck" on this leak?
not being quite sure if i wanted to run the whole thing,i flashed the boot and system images and the phone is unusable because of the bootloops
im thinking the factory images are not happy with the 2.01.605.11 firmware so im wondering now if once you install the new hboot, radio, etc, if the older custom roms do not work

Yes, the older custom roms will not work well with the new firmware. They run fine, but in my case you suddenly didn't have access to your external SD card . Some have lost both cards . Restoring with Scott's rom fixed this for some, I had made a backup of the stock RUU rom so just flashed back and all was good again. Then I flashed Scott's rom. Sounds like something changed with either the mounting points or the mmcc dev block on the new firmware.

From my understanding the new firmware doesn't play nice with the older roms. I'm very leery of running the ruu myself. What if the actual release uses the old hboot? Is that even possible?
sent from ics land
its possible that the official OTA may contain a different hboot, but not likely the old one. they have obviously changed some things that would ahve to be re-engineered to work with the old hboot, and their wouldnt really be a point. as much as it seems like a possibility i doubt theyd go to the trouble of releasing a leak just to eff with us
if it contains something different,it would be newer, like 2.22+. but im pretty sure the 2.21 will be the release hboot.
im not sure i want to upgrade yet, either, tho i beieve with the evo3d method we will be able to donwgrade if needed.
my main issue is that i still want to be able to use these older roms,at least long enuff everyone has updated their base and made the old version obsolete. i dont really care about getting back to gingerbread, but without s-off i think its best not to rush into anything.
grrr this whole s-on thing really ticks me off on my thunderbolt or sensation id just run the RUU and not care,as i could always go back to old firmware

Well, from what I see in the Amon Ra thread, the mount points for storage are definitely different. (The changelog over on Android Police even mentions a "fix" for storage issues.) As for me, I'm going to wait until drellisdee updates Amon Ra for the new firmware, by which point everyone ought to have their ROMs updated and most of the new "gotcha's" that arise worked out.

So, coming from a Thunderbolt...rooting and getting s-off on a rezound seems like rocket science in comparison. I've read and read for the past four weeks but I'm asking for your guys' help and clarification before I proceed.
Here is what has happened so far: My buddies Rezound is currently HTC dev unlocked with a custom ICS rom on it with S-on. I want to get him s-off so flashing roms and kernels will be a piece of cake without adding a bunch more steps. I figured out how to do it and understand the process myself pretty clearly but trying to explain it to my buddy...yeah, I might as well be trying to teach him another language.
Now, I assume he is on Gingerbread firmware since I haven't flashed the leaked ICS RUU(have to install gingerbread firmware patch on his ICS roms). This already is getting complex to me. On my good old thunderbolt I just had to use revolutionary to get s-off then it was flash whatever I wanted, gingerbread or froyo and flash compatible radios.
Here's what I want to do. I figure I should get him off of gingerbread firmware since the phone will eventually be getting ICS via OTA. To do this, I believe I have to re-lock the phone and then flash the ICS ruu. After that I can proceed to get s-off using the wire trick.
My questions are these: do I have to flash a stock rom before I re-lock the phone and flash the ICS ruu, or can I just leave his current rom on there(rezrom)?
And finally, what ICS version am I supposed to flash in order to get s-off? I see conflicting reports of this will work, any one will work, or only a certain one will work with the s-off method. Could one of you be kind enough to send me a link to download said RUU? I tried downloading one but it would check it in HBOOT and after the 5 minutes it took to check it, it didn't give me the option of running it...just went to the main hboot menu(fastboot, recovery, reboot, etc.). I don't know if it's because I was UNLOCKED (i realize you can't flash ruu while unlocked), or if the file was bad.
Sorry for the long wordy post but I felt like I should be thorough. Thanks in advance.

Just s-off on GB. You can do it on ICS or GB works the same way. Just if you RUU to ICS you will have to reunlock to soff.
Once s-off he can flash any ruu he wants in any order and keep s-off.
Also on a secondary note, you must have not had a thunderbolt when we first got s-off as getting s-off manually took about 30+ mins of constant cmd line use.
S-off on the rezound is much easier than it sounds. The only part that gives people trouble is the wire trick and mainly because it is all about timing.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
I will say this outright: you can S-off right now using the GB package option on unlimited.io since that is the firmware you have. Answering the rest of this assuming an upgrade to ICS firmware, but that is the simplest path.

Correct. If you're patching the firmware is still Gingerbread. Check in the bootloader for "hboot 2.11" to confirm this. Only way you can update firmware and radios while S-on is to run a RUU.

When a phone gets an OTA update, it is expecting you to be on the latest official release. That currently is the 2.01.605.11 Gingerbread build, the first OTA we had. That means you need to be on the GB firmware, and stock everything else, not on ICS firmware.
That said, last part is correct: You would re-lock, flash an ICS RUU, unlock again, put recovery back on, and either flash a pre rooted stock ROM based on the leaks, or root the stock ROM yourself. Then you are on ICS firmware, ready for S-off.

Leave the ROM. Do a nandroid backup. Re-lock and flash the RUU. You can restore the nandroid afterwards, just be sure to repatch the thing to new ICS firmware if you go that route. Check second listing in the Roll Up Sticky post in the Dev section.

Unlimited.io has files for GB firmware and the first three out of four ICS leaks. Note this last leak, the fourth one, is compatible with the unlimited.io files for the third leak ("5/7 leak"). So little was changed, so you're safe going with that combo if you wish.

You're actually right. I didn't get my TB til June and I spent months reading how to get s-off and finally did it in...august or september, I forget. It was MUCH easier by then.
I was familiar with the original process(only by reading, but felt confident in doing it that way) but by the time I was done learning everything about it, revolutionary method came out and I did it that way.
I know that I can get s-off right now on his gingerbread firmware, my only question is what happens when ICS does get released and all the good ROMS start to come out? I want to get him on an AOSP rom when they come out. I feel like he'll be stuck on gingerbread firmware and when it comes time to flash any of the ICS roms, he'll be clueless. I could figure out how to do it if it required an extra step or two but explaining that to him might be a bit much. I'd rather him be geared for ICS (he has no intention of going back to gingerbread, ever).
Also, I was under the impression that flashing a RUU would make it S-on. So if I ever wanted to upgrade his firmware to ICS we would have to do the wire trick again to achieve s-off once more.
Anyway, Thanks a ton guys for your feedback already. Love this community and you're both a great help. Thanks for the clarification/instructions phantasm.

Hop through S-off with the GB files from unlimited.io. Keep the stock bootloader for now rather than flashing the JuopunutBear hboot when their program asks you. (Note S-off makes the bootloader "Locked" again, but the JB files are hacked so you can use them *as if* they are Unlocked status... handy and makes it simpler to get the phone ready for warranty exchanges again. But! We want to make sure we get ICS firmware and radios first...then slap on an *ICS* JB bootloader...)

Nope. Once you achieve S-off you keep S-off. The only thing that affects S-off is turning the flag back on manually yourself with some fastboot commands.
So now you will be S-off and with a Locked stock bootloader. Download the RUU from the 6/10 leak here, rename to just PH98IMG.zip and flash it in bootloader:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/main/-Support_Files-/RUU/Vigor/RUU_Vigor_3.14.605.10_PH98IMG.zip
Then grab "[ICS][2.25][JB][5-7]PH98IMG.zip" from SuperChilPil's repository. (Note the 6/10 leak and the 5/7 leak have the same bootloaders just like the first pair of leaks did, so this is fine to use.) Rename to PH98IMG.zip and flash in bootloader:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/main/-Support_Files-/SuperChilPil/
This will make you S-off with a JuopunutBear hacked hboot, running the latest firmware and ROM available. Choose a recovery to flash, preferably TWRP or AmonRa. ClockworkMod has charging issues, there is a fix floating around thanks to NilsP and his own source if you insist. You can then proceed to flash the ICS custom ROM of your choice.

In order to S-off the Rezound, you need to be HTCDEVunlocked, Rooted and on Stock Rom.
Hey guys,
Im not sure what Im missing but Im getting a little frustrated with the rezound/my ignorance haha. My only other android was a dx and that one seemed to flash all roms much easier as far as compatibility. I have read guides and not sure what Im missing. I have an unlocked bootloader and amonra recovery 3.15, S-ON....
I have only been able to use the cleanrom series since 4.3? and conrom (liked but gets HOT) and now wanted to try cm9 lenoob but that failed to boot and also tried miui4.0 with a fail also. They get stuck on the htc logo and get warm, waited about 10mins each and am worried my battery might get low so turned it off before I didnt have enough to recover a backup. The directions said to place in sd and flash, thats what I did in and it didnt work, miui4.0 prompted if I needed the GB patch and I selected yes as well. I know with cleanrom I needed to do the GB patch and ph zip which I have, conrom did everything on its own but the cm9 versions I had no luck with.
Please point out my error guys, this phone has solid specs and just want the latest build of ICS.

That's because no kernel was flashed. When your S-On, you have to manually flash the boot.img within the rom zip. Fastboot comes in handy in that situation. Most devs are S-On friendly and provide a PH98IMG.zip for you to flash.
On a side note, I suggest you upgrade to ICS via the global RUU. If you do, be sure to re lock bootloader, then flash RUU.

Its almost impossible to brick an HTC phone if you know what your doing. The basic rule is make sure your flashing for the correct device because in each market each phone is a little different. On the original One X, the international versions partitions were different than the XL's partitions so if you flashed the wrong recovery it wouldn't boot because the recovery partition would be where root should be (just an example and on top of the HOX and HOXL had different hardware). On the X+ its more or less the same. I don't know anything about updating HBOOT but I would strongly discourage it. With every update there is the possibility of loosing the possibility to root; also flashing a new bootloader is VERY risky.. Yes, you can flash new ROMS without S-OFF however depending on the HBOOT version you have to flash the kernel or BOOT.IMG in the zip separately via fastboot. There are programs to do this or you just use adb/fastboot. CM for international won't work on out AT&T devices because of issues with the differences in the radio.
Hope I helped! Press 'thanks' if I did.

well i am pretty new at this dev experience and i would like to know more wish i new more and didnt have to ask stupid questions. i dont understand "by however depending on the HBOOT version you have to flash the kernel or BOOT.IMG in the zip separately via fastboot. There are programs to do this or you just use adb/fastboot."
my hboot is 1.32 and bootloader is unlocked and i am rooted. did it a few nights ago. boot img is in any new rom correct? cant stand sense roms. looking forward to using cm10 when its released for att. just thought id prep my phone for it
I think what he's saying is that before you could just copy the rom.zip to your phone and then flash from recovery(because the kernel stuff was included in the rom.zip) but now, because of various things, you have to flash the kernel stuff seperately(usually by extracting it from the rom.zip then running the fastboot cmd as he said). Once you've copied the rom over and flashed the kernel, then you can flash the rom from recovery like usual.
I think that's pretty much it and you don't really need to mess with anything else. But, of course, I'm not an expert by any stretch, so take it with a grain of salt.
What S-ON means for us is that we cannot flash the BOOT partition directly from the phone. This means, that Kernels (boot.img files) need to be flashed via fastboot. S-ON/OFF has nothing to do with changing ROMs, just Kernels.
The reason why we cannot use the same ROMs on ATT/Telus and Intl version of the HOX+ is that the US version has LTE support, which means it has a different radio.
Also i think the newest HBOOT you can get for the HOX+ is 1.35 but be careful with that and make sure you have the right file and correct md5 sum.
I flashed maximus Rom for the one x+ didn't have issue using tarp. The kernel was updatin with the new rom

It worked because it was unlocked by htcdevs

OK guys I am in no way a newbie when it comes to flashing ADB or Fastboot CWM or TWRP flashing on any devices, I have had almost every single manufacturer's phone before. My last phone was the International One X Tegra3 model for about a year. I got my DNA and the first thing I did was SuperCID and unlocked it, then TWRP and flashed SuperUser.
So now to my question - Is it pretty safe using an S-Off device never have used S-Off but I see threads saying don’t do this and don’t do that if you have S-Off. One thread said something about not flashing certain HBOOTS? I just confused on what I should avoid at all times with S-Off if anyone could tell me what not to do I would appreciate it a lot! I don’t want to screw it up because I paid cash and no contract so it will just be a nice brick if so. I thought S-Off was the holy grail of HTC devices but it seems it could cause a lot of issues, I think I;m just confused about S-Off altogether. I’m also using AT&T sim with this phone so I don't want to mess that up.
I’m still on the software and firmware it came with, is there any way to upgrade my phone right now. I looked and didn’t see any stock modded rooted roms that I could flash that would keep my phone safe. It seems like there is not much development going on for this phone I might take it back, I got about a week left to do so. I need to get this upgraded, can I just flash a dev rom with the newer software base and everything will be fine, that will update the software and everything?
Thanks for all that helps out, I really do appreciate it.
Not sure how it works but just read the instructions of the roms. Some need you to flash the boot.img before having s-off and a rom or kernel made to just be flashed you won't need to flash the boot.img before the file. As far as the hboot radios and stuff they have a guide on it on the forums just check the original development forums. But this is a Verizon phone so I wouldn't flash any hboot or radio while using AT&T considering it maybe Verizon radios but I could be completely wrong about that

Not sure what you are talking about. There are so many mods being done with this phone, I chose to stay stock Sense. S-Off allows you to bypass the security flag HTC placed on the phone so you can change all the things that may make your phone malfunction.
Keep your phone safe from what?
From what I understand, S-OFF just makes it so you can flash roms and mods a whole lot easier from a zip and it also allows your phone to remain rooted after doing so. I've had no issues at all with S-Off and it really is just a matter of reading every disclaimer from a rom and mod before doing it.

Things have come quite a ways already and have become a lot easier and safer. To be blunt, if you don't feel comfortable at this point, yes you should return your phone and get something further in the dev process.
If you do feel confident, flash DSB kernel, root the phone, obtain S-off and get to work!

Yeah, got it going right now running Viper 1.1.3 and cubed. Still no s-off though, I'm just iffy about s-off. I flashed the hell out of my One X but we never got S-Off for One X Tegra and everyone always wanted it so it must be kinda special. I see where it would save time flashing, I just don't want to flash some bunk software and brick my phone. I'm going looking into that a little more.
I need to purchase an aftermarket warranty since I paid cash for this thing. Still debating to keep it its fast as hell and everything I want but one thing killing me 16GB and I never got any free dropbox I've heard people talk about? I did with my One X but that is almost over now, I think it was a year free.

If you're that far in the process, you might as well continue down that road and S-Off lol. There's always an inherent risk to your phone as long as your flashing something and not leaving it stock heheh
As most everyone else will tell you, just use an OTG cable for extra storage. Yeah it's not the most compact thing in the world but it does the job.
