[Q] Looking for a new phone.. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! I know there's allready loads of these threads, but, as everyone have different criterias when buying a new phone, I figured out that it was best to just create a new one..
So, currently I am looking at the HTC one S, the Samsung galaxy note, and maybe the galaxy nexus.
I have been using a Huawei u8800 Ideos x5 the last 14-15 months, and I have figured out what I need from my next phone.
-I really need a bigger screen, as I text, browse, and play quite alot of games.
-Better battery time. (This isn't very important, as I charge my phone every night anyways. But, I wouldn't mind if my next phone lasts a normal day with moderate use..)
In my country, Norway, the Galaxy Nexus currently costs about 3400 NOK (590 USD), the One S costs about 4200 NOK (730 USD), while the Note costs about 4500 NOK (785 USD).
I have read about the PenTile screens on the One S and the Galaxy Nexus, so I was also wondering: is the PenTile screens really bad? I have read both good and bad stuff about those screens...
Also, a removable battery (which the One S doesn't have) wouldn't hurt, as I might wanna root it and flash custom ROMs after a while.
Which one of those phones should I go for? You could also suggest other phones
Come with your opinion guys

14-15 months? Assumably you have 3-4 months left on your contract? I'd hold off and check out the Galaxy S3 when its announced in a couple of weeks, I was looking at the one X but I have two issues with it, firstly, there's no SD slot, so if the unthinkable happened and I dropped it in the toilet, ran over it with car etc I've lost all my personal photos of the kids etc, where as with an SD slot, I'd have a second chance at recovering this data. Secondly, the battery is built in, non-removable, this seems a ridiculous idea to me as with large screen smart phones battery life is always an issue, I have two spare battery's that get very much use

well, I'm not on any contract But, yeah, I should probably wait and see what samsung announces 3rd May. If I don't go for the GSIII, I think that I might end up getting a Note..

Worth buying SGS2 for 3-4 years?

So I decided to buy high-end class smartphone (SGS2) and what I really want from phone is its longevity. I know many of you change your phones every year when new model comes out, but I don't do that. My last phone was nokia 5210 So what I really want from phone is that it will remain awesome for 3-4+ years, especially I am talking about screen. I've read that amoled screens have burn-ins and degrades over time and that's the main thing which worries me most about this phone.
On the other hand, even though HTC Sensation is a little bit worse according to reviews, it has SLCD screen, which does not degrade over time and it should easily last over 3 years. Or maybe changing GS2's screen for a reasonable price is a viable option after a few years? Or maybe it won't degrade if I will try to avoid blue homescreens and static images on my GS2?
So SGS2 or HTC Sensation when buying for 3-4 years?
I think the sgs ii is the best one out there right now, so if you want to choose that one, i think its the correct option.
Just my opinion

I know it's pretty much the best smartphone right know, but that's not what I am asking. Most of users who buy such expensive smartphones won't use them for more than 1-2 years, but I want to buy smartphone for 3-4 years, that's why I am asking.

nah as you have said about the Amoled degrading over time, unless you can deal with black marks over the screen and lower visibility in sunlight
I have NEVER used any phone for over 2 years.
So for me if they last two years, it's great.
And lucky me we have 2 years warranty on equipment... and I have 2 years insurance on the phone.
Two years from now I will surely have another phone to replace the then more than ancient SGSII.
I think if you want to use a phone as a phone, like you did your Nokia, not capable of much except being a great phone, you should buy another dumb phone that will last 3-4 years.
BTW can I use the SGSII as a phone and actually call people with it? Wow... I will give it a go....

But only you can answer that your the one that will want to change .
or are you asking >>> will the phone last four years <<<the answer to that is yes .

If you don't change phones too often, you might as well wait for Iphone 5 and buy it. They pretty much have a long life and they don't radically change things. I know it's kind of a blasphemy to recommend Iphone in an SII forum, but it's a good and solid phone out of the box. I bought the SII with the hope of keeping it for about 2 years at least.
I'm a SGS2 owner and it's a great phone but if you want a phone that will last for 3-4 years then i would definitely go for the HTC Sensation. HTC phones are generally robust and made from hard materials. The SGS2 is a light phone but it doesn't come without compromise. It's made from light plastic and the back cover doesn't feel like it'll even last for the 2 years i'll be using it.
I just recently upgraded to the S2 from my - ready for this?...... HTC TyTN!!!!
lol.
Only time will tell, we dont really know how long or how good the super amoled+ screen will last b/c the GSII was just released. Perhaps if you intend to keep the phone for so many years, it would be best advisable to weigh in the factors (pros, cons) of an LCD Vs. A Samoled+ display and make your own descision/judgement from there.
I can tell you from having had iphones for years (2+ years), which use LCD gorilla glass displays the screen quality never degrades. I cant tell you the same thing about my Galaxy SII's sAmoled+ display b/c I've only had it for a month
Samsung has just opened a new screen production factory. Their next phone will have a new type of SuperAmoled screen with much much higher pixel density. It'll probably make SGS2 look like Nokia 3210. If you're thinking really long term, you might want to wait for that.

I can already see ghosting icons on my SII after one month of use. If i pull down the notification bar, i can clearly see the shadow of the 4 default icons from my main screen for a couple of seconds. So i seriously doubt the screen will last for 4 years without noticeable flaws.

Its one of the compromises thats in SAMOLED Plus.
@OP
You may wish to consider a dumb phone instead if you want it to last more than 2yrs, Im honestly hoping the S2 can last me 1yr, my S1 didnt and I got the S2 11 months after i got the S1, I hope the S2 can last 8 months b4 the S3 comes out.
Do you know many people who have a phone that is 3-4 years old? Maybe a few that still have an original iPhone 3G - but they are incredibly uncommon.
Mobile phones are simply not designed to last that long.
I look at these amoleds as plasma tvs. Same things are said about plasma tv like ghosting and degrading. After a couple years with my 50+inch 1080p still looks great.
If your considering this for 4 years then you should factor in that parts will be alot cheaper if needed.
This is a good solid phone and unless something comes out bigger and faster ill be keeping mine for awhile.
**** you read on the interwebs should be taken with a grain of salt.

Question: if the amoled screen dies after a year or two, I can get it replaced right? but yea not like I stick with a phone for two years nowadays lol...usually it is within a year then switch.
Hi guys,
guess from what phone i upgraded! a 3 years (+?) old Nokia N95 till now, it works just fine! and i'm thinkin' of using my SGS2 just as long as i did with my N95
I would suggest you wait for the NOkia WP7.....
Nokia has been doing strong phones and wP7 is promising..
Forget Android cause you will just end up being a flash junkie with sleepless nights and cm7 nightlies and dream about Roms and firmwares.
SO YEAH WAIT AND GET A NOKIA WP7.. should be out is a couple of months

So accordiong to your advices it's not worth buying GS2 if I want it to last 3 years..
So it will not be possible to change bad display or what? And please don't suggest me iPhone which cost unreal money or low level phone just because I want a smartphone to last 3-4 years. Or maybe you think that if someone buys a phone for 100 euros it should last 5 years, but if you buy the most expensive phone for 550 euros you should change it after a year lol. At least for me that does not make any sense..

Thinking about going back to my S2... maybe I am crazy

I'm looking for some outside opinions on this. Here's my thoughts/reasons for going back to the S2...
1. It seems like I had better battery with the S2.
2. S2 was much snappier (exynos)
3. Waaaaay more roms.
4. Way more accessories.
Now, the counter the roms and accessories is the Note hasn't been out as long. But my thinking is by the time the Note catches up on roms, the S3 will be out (maybe).
So I'm looking at selling my Note and buying an S2 (again) but this time, no contract. Am I crazy? Would you do it if you were me? I love my note, but I had more fun on my S2 I guess.
I put mine up on Craigslist for $625 to see if anyone will bite and make a offer. But only too take that money and buy the international version which has alot more development for it currently. I had interest in upcoming LTE in my area but ehhh HSPA+ works fine.
If all else fails i still love the ATT note

Well ya. S2 has only been out for a ling time as the Note has only been out for a month. What do you expect?
Have you rooted it and installed the Saurom yet? Makes it a lot snappier. Like butta.

My concern is that S2 seems to be more port friendly since it shares the chip set with the international version, where the Note(att) does not. So i'm not sure the roms will ever catch up. At least not by the time the S3 is released.
Annnnd actually... I hadn't even considered that I'm still inside the 30 day time frame. I guess I could return it... Think I can get away with that with the flash counter being triggered??
And for the record I've tried saurom and it made the lockscreens look funny with a black background. I've been pretty happy with TPC rom as far as performance I guess. But either way, nothing is as snappy as what my S2 was.
I am returning mine tomorrow and going back to my Galaxy S2. Like you said the phone is just faster and snappier. Can't wait for the new Sammy LTE chip running at 1.5ghz.

3 weeks since the at&t Note release, still seems to be no real indication of ICS coming to it soon. And on top of that, subsidized pricing on it still hasn't dropped to at least $200.
Paying $250-300 to renew contract for a phone with outdated software is a huge waste of money imo. But it would make more sense if you either currently had no working phone, or the current phone was nearing its 'death -bed'.
For the time being, I'm mostly using the Pre 3 even though its screen size is around the same as the iphones. But it's the webOS on it that makes it easier for me to ignore the small screen size.
Ironic how I kept thinking that it's Samsung and/or HTC or bust....but yet I'm saddled with Dell and HP instead.
So funny how people expected ICS to come out as soon as they bought the note when it was said the note is EXPECTED to RECEIVE ICS! No such date was Ever mentioned, only for the international version!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
You're not crazy.
I use my international gs2 as my daily driver and switch to the note every few days. I basically use it as the smallest tablet rather than the largest phone. I have a stand, my n64, psx emulator going and it looks like I may get 4 days battery life.
I don't think 30 days is enough for me to choose so I'll give it a bit longer and sell it later on if necessary.
I actually already returned the Note for an S2 already. My reasons were pretty much the same as yours, but also including inability for one handed operation. Another factor for me was gaming! Too many games weren't supported on the Note yet and I didn't have the patience to wait for it.
I won't lie though, not having the Note now for a week i do miss the big screen and the colors. It seems the colors on the S2 are just off compared to the Note.
In the end I might even return the S2 and wait for the Skyrocket HD or the S3. I think my screen fix would be fixed with either of those newer phones (assuming the S3 comes in higher than 480 x 800).
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA
Came from the Skyrocket and I was in love with that phone almost as much as my all-time favorite the HD2. But I couldn't look past the bigger screen on the Note. I have to say after buying the Note I wasn't going to commit to it all the way and held onto my Skyrocket just in case. The Note isn't quite as fast, but fast enough and I made look like SkyICS Rom on the Skyrocket. I have a big hand so I am able to pull off one handed use for the most part on the Note. Battery is about the same, around 12-13 hours. Going back to my Skyrocket now seems funny and small. Note it is!
I just returned my Note last weekend after having it for a week. I have to move three other family member phone's sim cards just to revert back; it was painful. While I miss the Note's larger and higher def screen, my good ole Skyrocket was very much zippier, better battery life and all my screens line up. My Note was rooted and was oc'd to 1.7.
But the real trigger for this reversal was that I nearly dropped the Note more than a few times trying to do stuff with my one free hand. The final straw was when my case came and I still have a hard time holding on to it. I have fairly large hands but there is only so much you can reach with one hand.
Also, it was tougher to hide the screen from peering eyes when you're trying to sneak in a quick email, web lookup :0. And this is with the brightness all the way down.
I'll patiently await the Skyrocket HD or something else that is no more than a tiny bit larger.
Looks like Aaron from phone dog is going to use the s2 as his daily driver also. Note was too much of a beast for him to handle.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I've made the decision to go back to the S2. Hopefully, I'll get used to the smaller screen size. I'll use the S2 until the S3 comes out. The note is a fantastic phone...it really is.. but I need something with more dev support UNTIL the S3 comes out. Plus, the battery on the S2 (with custom roms) was insane. Not to mention a better performing processor.
I'm going to miss having a phone as big as my face.

Better battery life on the Skyrocket? You're doing something wrong or you got a defective device. My Note lasts nearly twice as long as my Skyrocket ever did.
You people going back to an S2 are crazy. If you don't have LTE in your area, I can almost understand it, but I will never go back to a non-LTE device again. And I wouldn't give up the bigger screen and better battery life on my Note for any other phone out right now.

Seems to just be general impatience. They expect 100 Roms within a month of release. Even though these devs are doing this at night in their spare time.

I guess. I personally don't care about ROMs. I figured I'd just wait for the official ICS and I'm fine with the current Gingerbread ROM anyway. My Skyrocket is still sitting in a drawer and every time I pick it up, it feels tiny and inconsequential compared to the Note. I also remember how long the battery lasted for me and I couldn't even consider going back to it.
Galaxy S2 was a great phone and the Exynos is badass, but I'll sacrifice a little speed for LTE. I hit between 40 and 50 mbps consistently here in Texas. Data cap or not, that makes everything faster.
I wouldn't trade my note for the world. Roms will be available soon. People just have no patience. I don't mind waiting for ics.

To buy or not to buy?

For the last few months I was all hyped up for the S3, followed all the news/announcements etc. I justified the few weaknesses the phone has by the fact that there is nothing else better on the market and probably won’t be for a while.
I was ready to buy as soon as it landed in the UK. Now I can’t get the colour I want (blue) probably for weeks. And Samsung have gone and announced other markets will be getting 2GB of RAM.
Now I’m not so sure about entering into a 2yr contract for a phone that has ALREADY been superceded. Yes, I know the S4 chip isn’t as good as the Exynos, but realistically am I going to notice a slightly better chip, or twice as much RAM on a day to day basis. We all know the answer to that, it’s the same for any computer.
Other manufacturers are going to want to best the SGS3, and even Samsung itself will likely announce a Note with a better chip and 2GB of RAM later this year.
So why should I buy the S3 now, with only 1GB, which many smartphones have had for over a year? Is this phone realistically going to last me the duration of a 2yr contract? My last phone has only just scraped it’s way to 18mths, and I’ve wanted to replace for a while now since the performance is no longer acceptable – despite all the ROM flashing and tweaks to squeeze every last drop out of it.
Please discuss. Convince me.
well I doubt apple will have anything interesting either but if you can, get the note

Yes, this is true. I don't want to wait any longer, but at the moment I'm being forced to, and every day I do wait more and more voices in my head say "Just wait for the Note 2, or just wait for the Nexus"!!
As for selling the GS3 later, well it will probably only be worth about £250 in 6mths time, so I'll have to find another £250 from somewhere to buy a new phone...
then when you get to the time when the new Note comes out the voices in your head might say wait a bit longer when the new phones a few months after might come out..and that is how the cycle goes on..get the phone mate.. it is good...development will be huge and well it will be worth spending the money on
Yeah, but the Note and the Nexus will be perfect! SAMOLED Plus screens and 2GB RAM is all I want on top of the SGS3....
F*ck it, you're probably right. And if I had the phone in my hand now then I probably wouldn't care as much as I do,cos I'd just be enjoying it.
Damn you Samsung, how the hell did you **** up the launch of your biggest phone ever?? Just give me my blue SGS3 NOW!!

U will never buy a phone

GSG 3 users. Is it still worth buying?

Hey guys, i've recently owned an HTC One x, and i've found it to be okay, if there's one thing i liked about it over the SGS 3 it would be only the screen (or maybe not). (ATM phone is dead, screen broke, not willing to give htc 300$ just to replace the screen. They wanted 294 euros, that
Either way, what good is a screen if the overall package doesn't do the job, right?
I was originally planning to get a Nexus 4, but for some reason i have the other side of me telling em to go for the GSG 3, incredibly fast updates (as they've proven). One factor i noticed that the SGS 3 has over the Nexus 4 is battery life. I think it easily gets 1 and a half to 2 hours more screen on time if i compare both battery stats thread.(hugely favoring me in for the sgs 3)
I'm just clueless as to what I should do. The nexus 4 is not highly available atm (screw you LG) , this is another reason i don't see why i should wait.
The SGS 4 is around the corner (?)
I'm just not sure what next move i should make now? The reason i'm very desperate at the moment is because my one x is not functional at all. My SGS1 is wrecked badly (charging hardly works anymore, and i just can't take it without a decent phone >_>)
Would you guys still recommend i buy a brand new SGS 3 @ 470 Euros right now? Any reason not to? I know such threads are not very welcome to a select bunch. But regardless, i'd really appreciate some input.
Worth noting is that i don't really game on phones, if at all.
No no i don't think you should buy sgs 3 again wait for a month you well see new phones. My next phone will be xperia z or s4 but lets see what we get in mwc 2013

If your extremely stuck buy the s3 but if your not id wait because god only knows what around the corner. Htc have a few nice phhones coming out and already out aswell as that the xperia z which will be out very soon is going to beat any phone that comes out this half of the year.

If you want to use the phone as it is, it's fine buying SGS3. the stock ROM is Okay with some great features. There are many great custom kernels (Perseus, Siyah, etc.) for you to choose. The phone is ok if you don't look at the specs, battery life is good, no warm(hot) issue, play almost any games well, support most video hardware acceleration codecs and great camera.
You should consider Xperia T if you want AOSP-like(CM) experiences. As it's a great device for devs and rapidly getting more and more sick developers (codeworkx for example). You may wait another month for an Xperia Z also.
Looks to me as though many are going to be recommending I wait. If that's the case i guess i will hold out. It would be much easier if my phone didn't suck. If it dies out on me i guess i'll just buy a cheap nokia for the time being and call it a day until i get my hands on something newer.
Never was worth buying and never will be. Get yourself a 16GB Nexus 4, instead.

Theres 2 thing with waiting
1 Theres always going to be something round the corner, so you can always waiting so you can end up chasing the latest greatest phone to be. I'm looking for a phone myself, but if I'm going to wait, I'd have to draw a line somewhere.
2 The price of what those phones will be, for example the price of the sony xperia is currently rumoured to be £520 sim free for the UK, whilst it's more than likely going to change, it may still be too expensive for some, depending if someones getting it on contract or what ever.
Least with any phone out, people know what the (most of the) pro's and con's and how much it's going to cost.

That is a nice looking phone, what I really don't understand about people is they complain at phone screens breaking, then a few days later the next in thing is making a phone out of glass, which is what breaks in the first place, it boggles the mind.
I own one and I wouldn't buy another one if this one failed.
It's nice and all, but it's not that great.

[Q] Time for a new phone

i absolutely love my atrix but time has taken its toll and my screen has finally cracked (badly) and its starting to loose sensitivity on the screen
Im looking for for a cheap new android phone thats as fast as or faster than the atrix but with a better camera at the price budget of around £140 secondhand, i may even buy another atrix..
does anyone have some suggestions?

Saw an Atrix HD couple of days ago (was it on Amazon or eBay, I forgot), around £130-150 I think. No contracts etc~
If I were you, I'd look like a Galaxy Nexus, but that's just me. One thing I've learned is that from now on, I'm only getting nexus devices. (Waiting on the next nexus to get a new phone for myself)
Depends on your budget but if you can afford it buy a nexus 4. Hordes of roms to try and developer support will be much better than the atrix. I still use my atrix 4g as a test dummy.

I would definitely not buy another atrix. I cracked my screen terrible a year ago and I've kept using it, but now the WiFi chip has burnt out. This is common problem with the atrix and happens with age. This combined with bug ridden ICS support and the fact that google will be releasing 4.3 soon, I believe it's time to move on.
Personally I'd wait until the new line of nexus-based products hits the UK. On June 26th the S4, and HTC One nexus versions are coming out in US and shortly after to the UK. You'll see a crapload of people dumping their old phones for resale when this happens. Just wait a couple weeks and you'll spot some deals. And you'll definitely see used Nexus 4 prices hit within your budget.
