Hello all, could not find this problem in search, so.
I bought a 32gb to replace the 8gb I was using, and im having trouble moving the files from .android_secure to the new card.
i copied files in usb mode from the galaxy to my computer and then swapped the sd cards , then tried to copy stuff back. but it just aint working , windows shows everything copys over except the .android_secure dir that is. my device will not recieve the files. and some other stuff in just plain dir's are not found when using root explorer. WTF is going on here.
Can anybody please help.
Thank You

Have you tried doing all your copying on a PC? I mean, taking your 8GB to a PC... copying files to a temp folder. Putting the 32GB card into the PC and copying all your files to the new card. I have always done this and I had no issues with folders not copying properly.

Like the pserson above me said, have you tried on the PC? Also when you do copy it over on PC make sure that you have all administrative rights on your computer so it can go through.
I know this is a tad old, but A nandroid backup such as done by 4EXT Recovery or even ClockworkMod should backup the .android_secure folder/partition/etc (in 4EXT Recovery when you do a backup, it saves the boot, system, data, cache, sd-ext/sd-ext2 into a backup which can be then be copied over to a new card after you partition it how you want, then run the restore process).
Likewise you could probably tarball it via adb shell in order to transfer it across file systems that do not support linux permissions and ownership flags.

hey guys i just got my external sd card and i put files (such as music) into it.

Copy files to external SD card via USB Mass storage mode .
Do you see the files in Windows Explorer .
Probably you are that impatient you have copied the files to a wrong place .

no... cant see nothing! (except on PC)
Copy the files back to your PC (if you need to) and reformat it, making sure you do it as FAT32. Then copy the files back.
use your SGS2 to format the sdcard, this should settle problems with filesystem, cluster size, ... then try again. make a backup of your files before you format!
same happend to my 32gb class 4 sdhc card abd after 2 days it become dead, now it is not working any more. May be your card has the same problem that mine had. I bought it from ebay and it was local china made card. I claimed my money and got it back.
may be this would help you, do not consider that your card is also going to die, i just told you what happened to mine.
actually i got my microSD from my previous device-Nokia E72
it is a SDHC so it should fit the FAT32 system..no?

It's best to format it if you're having issues, especially with something like files appearing/not appearing on different devices.
As suggested by d3l1 above, use the phone to format it. If you still have problems then there are better formatting apps for your PC.

if there are still problems he should test the card and see if it's dying, happens from time to time.

if you can open it in your pc then its not dead yet.. may sure you are opening the correct folder for external card. The folder is in sdcard\ externalSd or something like that
did you try another card? there are so many possibilities as to what may be the problem.
i can see the folder SDCARD/external_SD
but inside i can only see LOST.dir and .android_secure, nothing else! but i did put some music in it!
me 2
same here formated the sdcard in my pc put in my phone then transfered music.phone couldnt see any files so formated sdcard in phone this time but when hooked it up to the pc the files were still there even though they had been formated.lol not sure what to do next.
So I got my 32 GB card today. I plugged in my phone copied my external sd stuff to a new folder, switched cards then copied the folder contents on to the new card. I also transferred some pictures from the internal memory to the new card. Now many of my apps claim to be not installed any more. I never did use anything like apps2sd or anything like that. I figured it would work for me to keep internal for apps and external for media.
Thoughts, ideas?

let me guess, you copied the files and folders with windows explorer? if so then you missed the hidden folders that start with a dot (.) which holds the apps that are/were installed to sd..
If u still got the old card and havent formatted it yet you can still copy them, just enable "show hidden files" in windows explorer (google it) and copy them.

Mac OSX. Still don't remember installing any apps to sd, unless the apps themselves did it. I don't have any directories, etc that I copied or moved that pertains to the apps

So I put the old card back and the apps are working, so that is good news. Next step is I am creating a disk image from the old card (disk utility ftw) and I will use that to restore on to the new one, making it a carbon copy.
Hopefully this works
Slow process!

Now that I have everything working again, I'll be sure to do a backup before I break everything. Since it's been a couple weeks since I did one, I am relieved that I didn't have to restore
so the deal here is that i wanted to put a 16gb sd from 8gb that i was using. i had the old sd card (8gb) in my phone, i copied the whole thing on my computer's hard drive. put the new one in my phone, then formatted, then copied back everything from the computer.
Now, i only see 129 apps on the phone out of 285 i used to have. most of the apps i used to have were moved to sd using apps2sd.
i tried searching but i found results regarding how to backup before using new sd, or how to format etc. if i got blind for some reason and have missed the thread can someone please direct me to the right thread? or else can someone please help me that how can i get those apps back?
thanks for any kind of help.
P.S, not rooted.

According to me , you have the hidden files and folder disabled on your PC. So enable it, the from your old sdcard(8gb) copy a folder named ".android_secure" and put it in 16GB, then check again if that worked.

Thanks for reply, will try this..
If you do that you may be subjected to random freezes, lockups, etc. Not saying this for a 100% but usually that's the case. When you install apps and run them certain apps place folders on your sd card that are linked to the app. Also if you move apps to your sd VIA program/mod they are stored in the android_secure folder located on your sd card. When you format, move, alter, etc the folder from the sd or alter the contents inside of the .android_secure folder you remove/break the links, and just dropping the folder back on the SD will work but in most cases it dosent restore the links correctly from my understanding. IMO your best bet is to just uninstall the apps you had moved to your sd and then reinstall them. Also for future reference don't move or alter the
.android_secure folder folder if you have a nandroid that has some of the apps you installed moved to the sd. This is just my understanding. Hope this helps

use a linux based system to copy the files and folders over...it overtakes the permissions left behind in a windows format

thanks for the solution. but i dont have linux based system nor do i know anything about it, been with windows since 98..
After upgrading to ICS, some of my apps stopped to work. At first I tought the problem is with how ICS handles external_sd folder on internal memory. Than I noticed that I cant copy anything from my PC to Phone via cable. Strange thing is that I can copy via kiss air. So, I am in doubt where could be the problem:
1) ICS ?
2) Cable ?
3) Phone memory ?
4) Phone usb jack ?
Since I don't have second cable with me, I ll have to investigate after few days, but would like to hear your opinions. I just tried - copying from phone to pc via cable works fine. Last evening I updated Kies on last version. Also, I formated usb of the phone - no change - still can't copy anything on the phone.
***
Update - now it seems that I can't copy anything on usbStorage folder only !!!
***
Thanks in advance.
Zile
do a factory reset and install phone drivers fresh ...
So, situation is like this:
even on the phone, I cant copy anything in folder usbstorage. So, it looks like internal usb is damaged ? Also, what is strange, I CAN copy a lot of data on the phone, but note in folder USBSTORAGE or, for example external_sd (i don't have real sd card), which is probably internally made in usbstorage folder ?!? But I can copy more than one gig of data from pc to phone, and when I go to settings of the phone, I see that amount of free usb memory is decreasing, and internal phone memory is same.
very strange.
Looking for your answers.
Zile
Stop copying things to the usbStorage folder. It is only for USB OTG.
As said above try reading the basics first from the stickies .

My Igo stopped working. All the data was stored in external_sd. Now, when i try to reinstall, simple it doesnt wotk again. So thats the main reason i wanted to access these folders. On Gb everything worked fine. Now on Ics - not.

I've highlighted another problem for you.
Just to clear some things: I didn't have real sd cart. I suppose that becasue of missing sd card, some of the software i use on GB was making folder external_sd somewhere on internal memory of my SGSII - probably software is design to work that way. Folder external_sd could be seen using es file explorer, but not with default file manager. Also, on GB, I was able to copy files on folder usbstorage. On ICS - not any more. I admit i am not expert for android, but i aks: why on GB it was OK to copy files in this folder, now it isn't any more with ICS ? It makes me think that something is wrong with my phone. Or with ICS ? If this folder was provided to be just for "USB OTG" (whatever it means) - why I was alloud (as common user) to copy files in it while using GB ? I don't want to be software geek, I want to use my phone in the consistent way. Imagine that you have a PC, and on winxp you can copy files in folder MyDocuments, and for example on Windows7 you cant any more becasue iyt is now only for "DOC OTG". And, just to inform you - problem solved. I had to make folder on root of internal memory. After that software recognized it a put everythig in it.
I need some help.
I had a 16 gig sd card in my phone with several nandroid backups on it. I copied the contents to my computer so I could then transfer the files to a new 32gig card. I connected the phone via usb and every time I tried to copy the files it would give me an error that the files could not be copied. It would start the transfer and then stop and give me the error.
I understand that I could use a card reader but I don't have one and I haven't needed one before. I usually just use the usb cable for transfers and I have never had an issue until now. It almost seems that it won't let it transfer large files and just times out.
Any help would be appreciated. I need to get the files transferred to the new card. Oh, I also tried to copy to the internal first so I could then transfer on the phone but I got the same error.
Thanks!
Slaakker
Airdroid or MyFiles
Try using the program airdroid. It is an awsome program. path to your sd card should be /mnt/extSdCard
if not push the files to your internal storage then use the My files app to move them to your sd card.

Are you copying the whole folder or contents of the whole folder and trying to do the copy all in one shot? If so, try breaking up the copying process into half or even 4 parts and see if that works. I have done exactly what you're trying to do with no problem.
I tried both ways and I think it has something to do with the file size. Small files transfer fine but larger ones time out. I actually used the Kies Air program that comes with the phone. Interesting program/concept. I ended up transferring the files separately to the internal and then moved to the extsdcard. It sucks we can't just transfer there like a normal disk drive.
Thanks for the responses!
Slaakker
Tried AirDroid and it doesn't recognize the extsdcard. Just the internal. Thanks though.
I read about someone using adb to do this. If someone wants to doublecheck this first try adb pull /mnt/extsdcard PLEASE double check before you do this, I just started experimenting with adb and I'm not by my computer to try it first.
