I've looked around the forums and the web, but all I've been able to find are apps that allow remote desktop from the android device to a computer.
What I'm wondering, does Android have the ability to support some kind of remote login? through telnet, or rdp, or somesuch.
And if it doesn't support it natively, would it be possible for an app to create a remote session on the device? I spend a good portion of my time at work logged in remotely into other computers, and have been thinking about our society's higher focus on mobile devices, and it seems like it would be fairly useful to be able to remote into a mobile device, like android.
Anywho, I haven't been able to find much on it, so I'll look forward to your responses.
There's an app for that.
Hey Brandon. I don't mean to spam, honestly, but I actually work for a software developer that makes a remote control solution for Android for remotely screen sharing with the device over wi-fi or 3g. It also works for PCs and Macs as well. You can PM me for more details. I don't want to SPAM my company name over the forum.
Btw, the solution doesn't require rooted devices which is another bonus!

I found a solution its called teamviewer quick support. This is recently launched and allows connection into android pho e.
Do not be confused with the team viewer for pc. This is a different application and available to download from Google play store
Make sure you add " quick support" after team viewer to download right app.

anyone knows if it exists or if someone are working on it?
I thinks that it would be a great app in android and there be possible (iphone has a version of it)
thanks everybody.
you make a very good job and make this SO better.
Why not ask the company that makes the software? It's not OSS so there's not much the community can do with it.
Wow...didn't know they had an app for iPhone. How much functionality does it have? I agree, your best bet would be to contact them...

I don't think that the matlab iphone app was actually a scaled down mobile matlab. I'm pretty sure it just let you remote control matlab on a nearby computer. It would send some of the results back to your phone though. And there is an android app that does exactly that, Matlab Remote for Android.

Have a look at this one:

thanks for replies, I 'll ask to company.
I 'll write news here.
thanks.
the matlab version on iphone can do the calulcation base stuff but it won't do any plot and those kind of graphical stuff
least not with the one i played around with a few months ago
Check out the app called Addi
There is a light-weight, java based, open source, matlab / octave clone app for Android called Addi. It is published already. Plotting is in the works, but a lot is already there.
I think there is an octave-like port in the works. (waiting on froyo to clean up a bit, I believe.)
Octave in traditional should give a lot of backend/normal functionality.
Command remotley Matlab with Matlab Commander
Although not a standalone app like Addi, if you are interested in remotely command Matlab on your PC you could try the newly released Matlab Commander.
Look for it in the Android Market.

As I was also searching for Matlab on android...
I found out that it would be possible to run linux on android!!!!
And my university also has the licenses for matlab on linux.
So does anyone this already tried?:
To run matlab in your linux on android?
I did not tried it yet, because your phone need to be rooted to run linux, and I did't do that because I didn't wanted because of warranty reasons. But if someone says that this is possible than I might want to root
grz.
the next problem will be getting the ARM version of the matlab

If you're still looking for a Matlab client you might find Anoc interesting which is an Octave (=Matlab clone) editor.
Can't imagine how trying out programs in a phone is going to be comfortable.. Maybe tablet.. What if someone wants to use matlab functions in development.? Do you think there are specific libraries included?

hey guys. i'm new into android developpment.
i have my senior project in my university (i'm a 5th year telecommuncations engineering student) and its about developping an android app that creates a custom watermark (location +date+ text entered by user) and affects it to an image then uploads it to a server, its supposed to be designed for bloggers and offshore journalists... i cant seem to get a good concept... how am i supposed to use matlab via my android? or i can just find a function that does the water mark and add it to my code?
would any one of you be kind enough to help me create a decent diagram for my app, to make it clearer?
thanks in advance
I have just bought one for my dad, who needs my help quite frequently for basic functions. Is there an app out there, that I can use to see and control his screen. The only simple one I have come across is webkey, but that will only work for rooted tabs. Being remote, it is going to be a real challenge to root this, so just curious if anyone can point me to a good app for remotely managing the app. Thanks a lot.

This one also says 'It needs a rooted device'
remote access to unrooted Android devices
Unless the stock rom has remote access backed in then you will not be able to do this without a rooted device. We use Bomgar where we work and before Android and iOS we used to remote to windows phones all the time. Now the system file on these are more locked down on stock. If you search bomgar and ios you will see that Bomgar has a patition out there for users to sign. Right now only providers can use there software to rmote to devices. Maybe this will chamge in the future but it depends onthe rom and who is selling the device.
Being a techincal security guru, I like the more locked down phones, but it does come at a cost. As these roms and devices mature more, I'm sure a dev will figure out a way to do this without compromising the security of the device.

Removed ,hope he grabed it.
I think you might want to remove that link sharpish.
awww now my curiosity has the best of me lol
Hello,
I want to direct every user that connects through my portable hotspot I open on my Android to a captive portal - html page or something.
How can it be done? Is there any app for this? Is it possible?
I've searched and didn't find something like that, all I've found about captive portal is to automatically log in to a captive portal through the Android and not make the user that connect through the Android see/press a captive portal.
Also of course, I've found ways to do it on a normal router but not on a smartphone.
Thank you very much,

Hello, Is anybody has answer for this?
Thanks,
Sorry I can't help but I've been searching myself for months. And this almost got my hopes up..
What I want to do is turn my device into a portable web server.
But here's what I envisioned. You are at a large convention. There is no Cellphone tower signal and the location doesn't provide wifi. You want people to get a PDF file on the spot. Blackberry, iOS, Android whatever can access the wifi. So you make a small portable device that can serve up webpages. I could do this all on a laptop. But 6 ounce device that can do all that would be much better.
So just putting it out there for some developer reading this going man why would someone want a captive portal on android.

Having been pointed to this thread from another I was involved in, you may want to have a look at Using an Android as a webserver
Or...

+1, I need this as well.
Has anyone found a solution yet?
I've been thinking the same thing and could not get anything. I'm gonna try SimonTS post/reply and see if it works.
There is an app in Google Play with the name Paywall from fattin.com. It implements the captive portal logic but you have to be root in your device.

Did you find any solution ?
Maybe by installing Ubuntu on the phone
Hi,
You can try to install Ubuntu by using multirom, and use a hotspot tutorial for linux. The bad thing is that you cannot use android apps while the hotspot is running, because you are in the Ubuntu OS. You can use Ubuntu apps either. It's a complicated solution, but the only one who is working.
@mikycomputers - any update on this ? I'm also looking for a similar app
Hi, is there any solution now?
Still no solution...
We gonna have to make an app....
Hi
Maybe netcut you can find it on playstore

You can do it,if your device is rooted.
Generally any OS detects captive portal by looking for a specific site. Such as captive.apple.com by IOS and Android 8.0.0
You can simply redirect them to your server.
Edit hosts file in directory /system/etc/hosts
Code:
192.168.43.1 captive.apple.com
192.168.43.1 clients3.google.com
Replace 192.168.43.1 with your server address.
Don't forget to start your web server on port 80
I'll give more details,if still require.
Captive portal server app
I've just found this thread while searching on building a captive portal using WordPress and don't have enough posts to add URLs but here goes...
There is a project for raspi & certain routers that does this...
piratebox.cc
Which has now been ported to android by jochen ruehl who iirc is the guy who made paw server...
piratebox.cc/android
There is also lots more information about piratebox on his blog...
fun2code-blog.blospot.com/search/label/PirateBox
And if your interested in how it works or want to edit it to your own needs, the source code is on github...

Hi,
I am a student in computer programming and I am looking to self-learn advanced android development by making an android app for my personal use. I was thinking about making an application that would require a Client/Server model that would let me browse/playback my music that sits on my PC from my android device. Something similar to the Audiogalaxy application where I would stream the data from my PC to my device.
Knowing that I know how to make an Android app, I would like to know what would be the best technology to use. I would like to be able to access my library from Internet or via Wifi. I have done some search and found out that using Zend Framework as the server and using JSON-RPC as the client could be one of the way to go, but I haven't found all the informations that would convince me to go with that idea.
I would like to know your opinion/feedback on the technology or where I should start looking to make this happen.
Thanks!
have a good day!

I want this app to be like a radio station, but play only certain artist off of my computer. It does not have to be fancy. Im looking for a program to use to develop this app, or insight on how to do it. PLEASE help if anyone understands what i am asking for lol

First things first I would start by learning Java and taking a look at the official Android developer documentation and training. For developing your app the Eclipse IDE and the ADT bundle (Android Development Bundle which includes the Eclipse IDE and Adroid SDK) will include all the tools you need to get started. Once you have worked through writing some basic apps,I would recommend checking out this tutorial on how to make a basic music streaming app. While the tutorial is outdated and uses an outdated version of Android the principles and concepts shown still very much apply today.
I have limited knowledge of Java already, just basics. In that TUT he is using http to stream his music. My question for this is there anyway to not do it via http but rather straight off my hdd or even cloud?? Also I do appreciate you replying so quickly, the TUT you sent is very helpful.

What your looking for is something similar to this app here. One way would be to use cloud storage api's for Android such as Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. to stream the music. Directly off your hdd do you run Linux or Windows because you could look into integrating Samba share as a possibility. Also I would recommend then brushing up on your Java knowledge to make your Android programming experience more enjoyably and seamless (Not having to look up new Java things every minute).

I love your idea, but really love your desire to make it yourself. A tutorial is the best way to learn app creation. When you "walk" thru the process, or learn as you go, you are learning a new skill that you can expand into other avenues.
I have taken app creation to making my website so others can take their great idea and make it into a reality....good luck and have fun!
