[Q] Problems after official ICS update - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S2 on TMobile in the UK. Not rooted, just been upgraded to ICS with the official firmware through Kies.
Ever since then I've been randomly getting a black screen - i.e. phone doesn't respond to any of the buttons to turn the screen on. Only way to get the phone to work again is a battery pull. Haven't installed any apps from prior to ICS, and prior to ICS I didn't have this problem.
As well as getting a black unresponsive screen it seems to get really warm. Not the normal been playing a game warm, but bordering on really hot. When I do the battery pull and restart there's also been a big battery drain - have lost half the battery before and the phone warning is on screen saying it's about to run out of battery when it was 60% charged before.
I'm guessing no one's going to have a simple answer to this (although it would be great if anyone does, but I've searched and haven't found anything) - but any tips on trying to identify what the cause is? Could it be a bad app maybe?
I tried logcat but didn't really understand it (!) and I wasn't sure if it would record what happened before a battery pull anyway. What's a way of recording what's going on that will stay recorded after a battery pull?
Any tips to help get the bottom of this would be much appreciated
Many thanks
Andrew

First backup data and factory reset .
Still a problem reinstall the firmware.
Checkfus will let you download it and flash via Odin .
Or take it to a service centre is the other choice .

factory reset m8 if ur carrying ur bckup frm gb ,than some apps r not fine wiv ics...jus use ur ics wivout ur bckup of apps and download betterybattstat and some apps to c wats draining, ull get some idea.

I am having exactly the same problem. This has started just after upgrading to ICS. (I have an unlocked S2 CSC:XEU). Never had this problem before. I tried hard reset but the problem is still there.
I have upgraded using Kies.

I have the same problem on unlocked S2 CSC:XEU. not rooted...
reset didn't work. full wipe - the same problem

ics problems
hi, i have the following problems after updating to official ICS,
wifi sometimes gets stuck between on/off
sometimes phone goes to sleep and does not respond
wake up is slower than in GB
after numerous hard resets and re-flashing ICS with odin these issues persist.
I recommend re-flashing the official GB version and wait till samsung sort their crap out.

all these issues are kernel related. the wifi issue is reported to be a faulty stock kernel and the black unresponsive screen also is a kernel issue I faced with some beta kernels.
my tip, before you hesitate to go back to GB, give one of the custom kernels a try. Siyah, Speedmod, ... just for the moment don't tweak anything and make sure you really flash an ICS kernel (!!). Just flash one of these kernels and give it a try, you don't even have to do it with odin and thus increase the counter, but you can use that variant. When you are in CWM, instead of flashing the SU zip file, flash the custom kernel zip which will root your phone, too.
Now give the custom kernel a try and see if your issues are gone.
If you don't like it, just flash the stock kernel with odin and uninstall SU and Busybox, and you are back to stock ICS.

I had the same problem. Kernel. Flash the latest siyah kernel and sleep of death will dissapear

I'm getting the exact same issue running Siyah 3.3.2 and CM9. Also happened with stock ICS.
First few times it happened the phone was in my pocket and I felt it get warm. Only way to recover it was to hold power button in for about 10 seconds and it then reboots. I thought the screen was unlocking in my pocket and it was switching off due to overheating... but
Happened again today whilst I was using the phone. Screen went black and phone started getting hotter and hotter. I now think something is causing some kind of loop that causing the lockup / heat up and the phone is actually still on until I press and hold the power button.
I'm currently trying a "record" with CatLog but I can reproduce the problem easily apart from it happening 4 times in the 4 weeks I've had the phone.
(Its a I9100P if that makes any difference)

[Q] Phone turns off overnight by itself

Hi,
I have KE7 firmware which is rooted.
Two nights in a row now, when I wake up, the phone is switched off.
Last night it was even left charging as well. I turned it on and the battery levels are fine (i.e. 90%).
Is this a software/firmware issue ..? Or do you think it could be the actual battery? tempted to just reset the phone again.. Before my phone would randomly restart too.
Thanks,Thanh.
Have you used a task manager to check what processes are running before u sleep? I doubt it's a firmware issue otherwise loads more people would be complaining.
SOunds more like you have some flaky software installed if you were also getting random restarts because I'm on KE2 Villian Rom and have none of the issues you've just mentioned
I had one random reboot on kdd. None on KE7, stock or rooted.

I have lots of reboots and crashes on KE2. Some crashes even consume my entire battery!

Suggest factory reset as first step this wipes data so back up if needed ,

S2 suddenly started crashing randomly (freezes&reboots)

hey folks,
i have encountered an annoying problem that has made using the s2 quite an unpleasant experience recently.
I bought my s2 about 4 months ago. after 2 weeks or so i switched to miui (galnet) and have stuck to miui ever since. later i switched to langthangs releases as well as siyahs kernels (loving both, major props to them).
around mid of december, my phone suddenly started to crash. up till then i had a couple of freezes here n there, maybe once or twice a months. but since then, even though i did not change anything, my phone has been crashing more often, like 5-10 times a week. updating kernel and rom didnt help.
i experience two types of crashes:
a) freeze: phone just stops working. i have to take out the battery to reboot
b) reboots: phone just reboots out of the blue. sometimes it reboots 3-4 times in a row, like after the first reboot the phone does nothing for 2-3 minutes, then reboots again and so on
i am not sure if that helps, but most of the time the freezes occur while using the internet, the market and playing games. reboots occur randomly, even if the phone is not used at all.
i haven't done any overclocking, just undervolting using voltage control. but i had been using the reduced voltages for weeks, long before the crashes started to occur. and yes, i did try switching back to the stock voltages.
i may have dropped my phone a couple of times, but none of the drops was really bad as it has no scratches or dents.
Anyone else having the same experience?
Is there a way to check if -maybe- the ram/rom is defect? If nothing helps, i think i ll have to flash a stock rom and submit a warranty claim
I would go on a limb saying its MIUI's fault. Wich version of Syiah are you using? Try to reflash different version, I found that 2.6.2 is stable. Also the new one 2.6.6 wich I'm currently testing is stable to, other ones were kinda buggy.
Also are you undervolting or UC'ing ?
If all else fails flash different ROM, after testing many of them I found the latest Criskelo to be stable as a rock.
The only way to really tell is to flash back to a stock rom and see if the freezes/reboots still occur...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
well, i have tried different roms. and yeah, i am undervolting and underclocking (200-1000).
but isnt it strange? i have been using miui for months without any problems, and baaam ... suddenly the phone starts crashing? i mean at the time the freezes and reboots started to occur, i had been using the same system (kernel, rom, setting, apps) for weeks without any problems.
i ll try going back to stock. if that doesnt help, ill send it in.
btw. i have flash stock via odin, will the exclamation mark during the bootup process vanish?

Yep, hence you flashed original firmware the dredded(by some) yellow triangle will dissapear.
It will reapear as soon as you root your device.
that last sentence was supposed to be "if i flash stock via odin ..."
ok. ill try that and report back.
BUT
if flashing a stock rom helps, the problems much likely lies with the custom rom. but if so, why did they work perfectly fine until recently?
i may have dropped my phone a couple of times, but none of the drops was really bad as it has no scratches or dents.
Logic says that is the answer .
jje
u think so?
the phone just slipped out of my hand a couple of times, but it never fell on the floor (lets say 30cm or more).
and why would sth like that cause freezes like that? i mean my sisters ace has a totally shattered glass and its still working perfectly fine.
anyway, backing up all my stuff and trying a stock rom tmr

Galaxy S II too hot

Hey guys!
I know some thread has been created about the hot Galaxy S II issues, but I have a different experience.
The first time I flashed my phone to ICS, my phone was really hot, and that was really unusual when I used GB before. I was sick of my battery was draining, and my phone was hot, I switched back to GB Checkrom, and guess what? The phone was still hot.
First I thought I could be the rom, but I tried different kernel to see how it is going on when I had ICS, thereafter I switched back to Checkrom GB, and I used NEAK kernel, which I had good experiement, but my phone was still to damn hot, and I reflashed second try, which was Siyah Kernel. Still to hot, now I'm using SLIM ICS, and my phone is hot! What is going on??? Have I been flashing to much, and damaged my hardware or something?
When I'm taking a phone call, or browsing a bit on the net, or even listening to music, charging or standby, still too hot! Any ideas how to reduce the temperature of my phone?
Thanks!
Did you allow the phone to have a few complete battery recharging cycles after each time you flashed another rom? Mine gets hotter right after a new Rom is flashed, after few cycles goes back to normal.

1: hope you wiped when you went from GB to ICS and again when ICS to GB
2: change your modem, or better do a full wipe and flash a stock GB ROM.

Yup I was like u asking questions here about HEATING effect of SGS2.. But let me explain u wy i got back... When I bought my phone last month 13th I couldn tolerate unrooted phone.. So rooted and installed a custom ROM... U wont believe me while calling i couldnt hold it on EAR! It was that hot... Even if my young bro plays a game or watches a movie it used to get burn like hell..
1. I tried Siyah Kernel My phone was HOT!!(NO hard feelings for Siyah )
2. I tried Fluxi Kernel viola heating effect gone!! But still the phone used to heat up after 20 minutes of continous usage. I mean heavy usage like 3G...
3. Finally tried KI4 modem now the real action started no heat even after heavy usage!!
Dont know whether these things might work on ur phone(In theory must work ) But keep trying different kernel and modems till u come to know this heat is tolearable before that

[Q] Sleep of Death

Whenever my phone goes to sleep, and I try and turn on the screen again, it simply reboots. This occurs in airplane mode with nothing enabled as well
Unlocked, CM7. I flashed different roms and they all had this, I don't think it happened on stock.
Any fixes? All the threads I've seen have no real info
Seems like your system files might be corrupted. Wipe system partition from fastboot or cwm then reflash your rom. Any time I had weird stuff happen on a rom, I wipe the system then it goes away. Hope this helps you get rid of this issue. Good luck!
Sent from my MB860 on CM7.2.0 Stable
Doesn't work, just wiped system, cache and dalvik, then flashed rom and sod's still happen.
I have also tried flashing several radios, all with sod's. Any suggestions?
wakelock
I had this problem on stock and every rom I tried (this was actually the reason I unlocked) I installed wakelock app from the market. I set it on partial wakelock. I think it keeps phone from going into deep sleep. It worked for me. I think it may make battery life a bit worse but having to pull battery sucks. Since I also have the issue on stock I am prob sending it in on warranty

So you've had SODs since you got the phone? Wakelock seems to work, but kills the battery.
For anyone who does NOT have SODs what modem/radio are you using?
Yes had them since I got the phone. Wakelok fixed it for me. Battery life is not horrible. It still last me like 14 hrs moderate use. I have tried radios and everything else I could thing of. Think mine is hardware related. That is why I am sending it in. I was surprised to find out it was still under warranty
I've just noticed that when mine shuts down, it gives a green notification first, then when I try turning the screen it, it reboots.
Unfortunately, my phone is out of warranty, I bought it used
SODs still happen in airplane mode.
Try wakelock and post if that fixes it.
Call Motorola directly. I bought two used. Had the same problem. They replaced them both with new units.

Just don't say anything about buying it used.
Good luck.
As posted above, wake lock works but uses battery.
I live in Canada and am out of warranty, would I still be able to call?
It's worth a try. You have nothing to lose.

I had the same problems.. but mine happens when phone gets above 35°C.. So I activate wakelock at this time until i see temp is lower than that.. after that I disable wake lock.. it's a pain in the ass.. but it is better than pull the battery out once every 15 min..

Is there something specific about 35C, and are you sure it is exactly that?
I have installed 2.3.6 Bell and I still get reboots, anyone have a link to stock 2.2.1 Bell SBF that I can try?
sometime 35 sometime 36.. but above that temp.. sod kills me.. under that temp phone runs smooth..
I'm a system enginner but I haven't program in years.. I'm thinking seriously in create just a services to read temp and launch a wake lock when temp reache some level..
I'm pretty sure I will help lot of people but aint sure when i can start doing some work

my phone would not actually reboot but in went into SOD (sleep of death) so every time this has happened to me i installed a new kernel or reinstalled the one i had.........always rectified the issue.
Same issue
I had the same problem when I flashed CM9 and then when I downgraded back down to CM7, I tweaked the kernels I used and changed my UV settings and it hasn't happened since. Perhaps flash a different kernel and see if that works?

Tried several of them, this seems to happen on stock 2.3.6 as well.
I flashed a stock sbf to return to stock. Still had the sleep of death. Reboots after and during phone calls, and touch screen problems. I believe it is hardware related.

Stock phone updated to 4.0.4 and now freezes too often + bad battery life again

Hi,
I got the OTA update to 4.0.4 a few days ago on my SGS2 (network O2).
Coincidentally I've been running with various launchers (Nova, Mii, ADW etc) but I decided to go back to TW. So I deinstalled them all at around the same time.
Anyway, since the update my phone has been playing up constantly. I've had random reboots whilst the phone has been in my pocket. I've had plenty of short and long freezes. The stock browser locks up quite regularly if I have many tabs open (or any one of them has many images). It also reports inability to connect to the proxy server (though I haven't got a proxy set up).
And to top it all off, my battery life seems to have gone back to being terrible (if I use the phone as a web browser for an hour or so can see 50% of the battery life go!) The battery usage indicates the screen and the internet are taking 75% and the OS only 6%, which is different from what I've seen before. The phone runs very hot sometimes - the screen can get too hot to hold my finger on.
So is this something anybody is seeing, or has my phone just freaked out? Is it worth a factory reset? Is it possible to force the 4.0.4 update to be re-applied? Anything else I can try?
Cheers,
Ross
I have observed the same after moving to 4.0.4. Especially stock browser likes crashing. Anyway, all crashes happen much often for me on ics than on gb.
When I've tried LPT I've noticed extrem battery consumption while using but no crashes.
My wifes phone had similar stuff Ross so we sent it back to Samsung. Was very hot around camera and was freezing a lot,and wireless hardly connected.
When it comes back Um sticking on GB like mines..

I experienced all of this you are saying. Tried a factory reset from stock cwm, but didnt solve anything. In this point I just downgraded to 4.0.3 and had the update to 4.0.4 LPT with kies. To my surprise, all things are good and stable.

Both my wife and i have i9100's
i updated to 4.0.4 through kies - no issues at all
she update to 4.0.4 via OTA - freezes, gets hot, kills battery
Both phones unlocked unbranded
How do i down grade to 4.0.3?

Flashing a 4.0.3 firmware trough odin
Thanks very much for all the replies :good:, it sounds like an Odin downgrade and then upgrade is the way to go, I'll try that tonight. And if that doesn't work I'll try using an older modem.
And if that fails, I'll go complain to O2.
Factory reset should solve that! I had similar problems after upgrade from GB to ICS, after FR all was right.

Never recommend factory reset to someone running stock 4.0.4 ROM on stock kernel
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
An update, in case anyone stumbles on this thread...
I chickened out of doing the Odin flash, as I googled for a 'how to' and saw it'd invalidate my warranty.
I'm aware there's a way to decrement the flash counter, but I'm a noob at this. I'll stay 'chicken' for moment.
So I did the easy thing... I ran my battery absolutely flat, then recharged the phone to 100%. It certainly seems better - maybe the battery state wasn't being detected properly and caused some issues?
Certainly I've stopped getting the overheating / rebooting / freezing / catastrophic battery life.
I'd be inclined to leave it as-is, but my battery life is still pretty poor compared to how it was... if I browse the internet for a short while (over wifi) I can see big chunks of my battery percentage disappearing.
So I'll go to the O2 store that's nearby, and see if the 'guru' can help me - either by okaying an Odin re-flash, or by sprinkling pixie dust on it or some such
I had another lock up and self-reboot, so I decided to take the plunge and re-flash it, which was relatively simple.
Fingers crossed it does the trick! But if it doesn't, well I can go back to 4.0.3 now.
