Galaxy S II too hot - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys!
I know some thread has been created about the hot Galaxy S II issues, but I have a different experience.
The first time I flashed my phone to ICS, my phone was really hot, and that was really unusual when I used GB before. I was sick of my battery was draining, and my phone was hot, I switched back to GB Checkrom, and guess what? The phone was still hot.
First I thought I could be the rom, but I tried different kernel to see how it is going on when I had ICS, thereafter I switched back to Checkrom GB, and I used NEAK kernel, which I had good experiement, but my phone was still to damn hot, and I reflashed second try, which was Siyah Kernel. Still to hot, now I'm using SLIM ICS, and my phone is hot! What is going on??? Have I been flashing to much, and damaged my hardware or something?
When I'm taking a phone call, or browsing a bit on the net, or even listening to music, charging or standby, still too hot! Any ideas how to reduce the temperature of my phone?
Thanks!

Did you allow the phone to have a few complete battery recharging cycles after each time you flashed another rom? Mine gets hotter right after a new Rom is flashed, after few cycles goes back to normal.

1: hope you wiped when you went from GB to ICS and again when ICS to GB
2: change your modem, or better do a full wipe and flash a stock GB ROM.

Yup I was like u asking questions here about HEATING effect of SGS2.. But let me explain u wy i got back... When I bought my phone last month 13th I couldn tolerate unrooted phone.. So rooted and installed a custom ROM... U wont believe me while calling i couldnt hold it on EAR! It was that hot... Even if my young bro plays a game or watches a movie it used to get burn like hell..
1. I tried Siyah Kernel My phone was HOT!!(NO hard feelings for Siyah )
2. I tried Fluxi Kernel viola heating effect gone!! But still the phone used to heat up after 20 minutes of continous usage. I mean heavy usage like 3G...
3. Finally tried KI4 modem now the real action started no heat even after heavy usage!!
Dont know whether these things might work on ur phone(In theory must work ) But keep trying different kernel and modems till u come to know this heat is tolearable before that

Phone Randomly Shuts Off

I've only had this happen a few times and was wondering if anyone had this happen to them also. I'm rooted and run custom roms, it doesn't seem to be rom or kernel dependent.
For example, I had my phone on since noon and haven't really used it since then except a few times to check the time. I just pulled my phone out of my pocket and hit the power button... nothing. I held it down and it started to boot up. When this happens the battery is never dead (it was at 68% with the ext. battery this time), it just wants to turn itself off. It seems to happen when the phone is "sleeping", it's never done it when I'm actively using the phone so it's not an overheating issue.
It's not really annoying since it doesn't happen often, it just confuses me.

still you might want to check the rom and kernel just in case, either re-flash or change.
if the problem still happens, use your warranty and get a new phone.
what rom, kernel, and recovery are you using?
I actually just happened earlier again. Got a text from a friend that she was here, so I went down and let her in, came back up and went to check my phone a few minutes later and it was off. WTF.
I'm currently using Nils newest business sense with the OC'd ICS kernel and the latest Amon Ra recovery. This used to happen on GB also so it's not a rom/kernel problem IMO.
It happens so sporadically (except for tonight apparently) that it's maybe happened 5 times since I got it on release day.
Maybe I have the governor in cpu master set too low? I have it at the lowest of 384 MHz, I've always wondered this: whats the difference between conservative and powersave?
did it happen while you were on stock GB or on a custom rom and kernel? maybe try relocking and running stock for a while and see what happens?
I honestly don't remember, it's been too long lol. It's not worth it to go back to stock and relock considering I like ICS too much.

that's the issue right there, run the stock kernel at stock speeds.
How could it be the ICS kernel when it's happened on GB also?
Which OC? I've read that the 1.8 causes random stuff like this, but 1.7 doesn't.

3.0.16-g4a9c8a3 SebastianFM #1 is what the kernel info says
The zip name is Overclocked_kernel_v1.20_1836_MHz_by_sebastianFM.zip
Not all phones can handle overclocking.
Mine is stable about 98% of the time, it may actually be the extended battery that is causing the issue.

9x out of 10 random reboots are from either undervolting too low or overclocking too high.
I went back to the stock kernel since it seemed to be a little choppy with the oc'd kernel. That may have been the problem after all.

[Q] Problems after official ICS update

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S2 on TMobile in the UK. Not rooted, just been upgraded to ICS with the official firmware through Kies.
Ever since then I've been randomly getting a black screen - i.e. phone doesn't respond to any of the buttons to turn the screen on. Only way to get the phone to work again is a battery pull. Haven't installed any apps from prior to ICS, and prior to ICS I didn't have this problem.
As well as getting a black unresponsive screen it seems to get really warm. Not the normal been playing a game warm, but bordering on really hot. When I do the battery pull and restart there's also been a big battery drain - have lost half the battery before and the phone warning is on screen saying it's about to run out of battery when it was 60% charged before.
I'm guessing no one's going to have a simple answer to this (although it would be great if anyone does, but I've searched and haven't found anything) - but any tips on trying to identify what the cause is? Could it be a bad app maybe?
I tried logcat but didn't really understand it (!) and I wasn't sure if it would record what happened before a battery pull anyway. What's a way of recording what's going on that will stay recorded after a battery pull?
Any tips to help get the bottom of this would be much appreciated
Many thanks
Andrew
First backup data and factory reset .
Still a problem reinstall the firmware.
Checkfus will let you download it and flash via Odin .
Or take it to a service centre is the other choice .
jje
factory reset m8 if ur carrying ur bckup frm gb ,than some apps r not fine wiv ics...jus use ur ics wivout ur bckup of apps and download betterybattstat and some apps to c wats draining, ull get some idea.

I am having exactly the same problem. This has started just after upgrading to ICS. (I have an unlocked S2 CSC:XEU). Never had this problem before. I tried hard reset but the problem is still there.
I have upgraded using Kies.
I have the same problem on unlocked S2 CSC:XEU. not rooted...
reset didn't work. full wipe - the same problem
ics problems
hi, i have the following problems after updating to official ICS,
wifi sometimes gets stuck between on/off
sometimes phone goes to sleep and does not respond
wake up is slower than in GB
after numerous hard resets and re-flashing ICS with odin these issues persist.
I recommend re-flashing the official GB version and wait till samsung sort their crap out.
all these issues are kernel related. the wifi issue is reported to be a faulty stock kernel and the black unresponsive screen also is a kernel issue I faced with some beta kernels.
my tip, before you hesitate to go back to GB, give one of the custom kernels a try. Siyah, Speedmod, ... just for the moment don't tweak anything and make sure you really flash an ICS kernel (!!). Just flash one of these kernels and give it a try, you don't even have to do it with odin and thus increase the counter, but you can use that variant. When you are in CWM, instead of flashing the SU zip file, flash the custom kernel zip which will root your phone, too.
Now give the custom kernel a try and see if your issues are gone.
If you don't like it, just flash the stock kernel with odin and uninstall SU and Busybox, and you are back to stock ICS.
I had the same problem. Kernel. Flash the latest siyah kernel and sleep of death will dissapear

I'm getting the exact same issue running Siyah 3.3.2 and CM9. Also happened with stock ICS.
First few times it happened the phone was in my pocket and I felt it get warm. Only way to recover it was to hold power button in for about 10 seconds and it then reboots. I thought the screen was unlocking in my pocket and it was switching off due to overheating... but
Happened again today whilst I was using the phone. Screen went black and phone started getting hotter and hotter. I now think something is causing some kind of loop that causing the lockup / heat up and the phone is actually still on until I press and hold the power button.
I'm currently trying a "record" with CatLog but I can reproduce the problem easily apart from it happening 4 times in the 4 weeks I've had the phone.
(Its a I9100P if that makes any difference)

SGH-I77 ICS upgraded - Heating issue

Anyone who updated your SGH-I777 to ICS facing heating issues while downloading stuff from market or using internet over WIFI/DATA?
My phone has horrible heating issues after the upgrade from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3. Its terrible. My phone on GB was smooth like butter and never faced any kind of heating or lagging issues. but this ICS upgrade is just one ****.....
Please help me by sharing your experience while on WIFI or DATA connection.....
Mine has been doing that for a few months now. Since I started using AOKP. Anytime I use my phone for a few minutes it starts to get warm, getting hotter the longer I use it. I was worried at first, but got used to it. Like the camera whirring noise, I just ignore it mostly.
I am planning on getting a warranty replacement anyway sometime before the warranty runs out, so I haven't worried about it.
It could be a rouge app running all the time. Better Battery Stats will let you see if any apps are preventing your phone from sleeping. CPU spy will also let you see if your phone is sleeping. A rogue app generally causes battery drain too. I see the same battery life on ICS as GB for the most part.

I don't think it has anything to do with the app running...... Its a very fresh installation and after the boot, I have tested downloading the say 5 apps from Playstore. The top portion of the device heats up big time. I am an android engineer and have rooted and applied custom roms on the devices but I am not willing to do that on this device becoz the Stock GB on SGH-I777 (2.3.6) is the best i have come across in terms of stability and efficiency. So just badly wanna go back to stock 2.3.6 but online I saw ppl facing problem when they downgraded to stock 2.3.4.....
I am still repenting on upgrading the device...uffff damn it
The only time I noticed anything like that was when I put my phone in the
mobile dock and using the GPS and it was a hot day plus it was charging.
Once I plugged into the regular house charger it cooled down
(even though it was still charging).
I guess they have overlocked the device and thats the reason y its heating up
I don't over clock my phone. I run AOKP with Fluxxi kernel, and don't touch the CPU speed, voltage, or governor settings. My phone didn't get hot like this on SHOstock, but pretty consistently on AOKP it heats up when ever I use it. I posted in another thread about heat issues that at the end of the day I had 13 hours up time, and less than 3% was at 800 MHz or above. The most common was deep sleep, 200, and 500.
I don't worry about the heat anymore, I got used to it. Most of the time its just warm, but if I get downloading a big file it gets really hot. It doesn't seem to affect the performance or battery life, so I don't worry.

AOKP and CM9 with Fluxi Kernel very heat when I played Nova 3.
Ever since the first ics leak came out its been on my phone and have had nothing but heat issues some to the point i worpped my sim card and back cover. Yes warrenty replaced it (the phone) not the back cover. So it is just something to deal with till jellybean is released. Hopefully they will have fixed it.

Or stay on GB lol. I really didnt like how buggy ATT ICS seems to be with some apps like WordPress
I would love to go back to GB but scared use the ROMS that are available online.. I have done lot unlocking and rooting stuff on devices but i failed one time and thats what is holding from rooting/unlocking the device. Also I have realized that the custom ROMs are always buggy.....
Some people have had heating issues on ICS, and others not. Don't really know what the difference is. I suppose there could be some differences in the hardware.
Anyway, going back to gingerbread is relatively safe. You can go back to fully stock, or you can go back to stock plus root. Each of these options would be by flashing the firmware with Odin from a windows pc. Neither of these packages contain bootloaders, so the risk is minimal, almost non-existant. The packages are UCKH7, Gingerbread 2.3.4, although there is a UCKK6 plus root available also. You can use the guides linked in my signature, the one for returning your phone to the store for straight stock, and the one for flashing firmware without incrementing the flash counter for stock plus root.
Custom roms vary in stability. Some are extremely stable. I would say that SHOstock2 is as stable as about any rom I have ever used. It's certainly good enough for every day use. It is ICS though, and don't know how your phone would do with it. I have seen a few reports of overheating with it, although my phone rarely gets even warm to the touch.
Just wanted to echo 1) my phone also gets hot when being used heavily (wifi, bt, gps, data, sync, all on) but not to the point of concern. And 2) the reco of shostock2 3.1.0+ for stability.

One of the most stable, smooth GB roms is UnNamed 2.2.1, which you can check out HERE. I used it for a good while, but wanted to try ICS. Excellent, stable rom, with themes available.

You got it right. Thats exactly where I feel the heat on my device..... Trust me, I didn't feel any heating effect whatsoever when my device was on GB. So I m pretty sure that the hardware is all good and its the firmware/software thats screwing up the device.
Personally I found my phone got hot after setting up an exchange account on it. I also got massively reduced battery performance. Once I removed the exchange account operation returned to normal.
One or more of the apps (from the old GB install) that is running in the background causing it to heat up, I was ruuning into that issue when I first updated to ICS. I end up doing the factory wipe and reload every apps back on. Now I don't have that problem.

My s2 is lagging like crazy...

Okay, so I have s2 i9100. I have installed neatrom lite version, it is jb 4.1.2. I have fully nuked phone before installing this rom and installed dorimanx kernel afterwards. By using stweaks i choose performance profile for my phone. Even though I have disabled animations from developers menu, and I do not use any applications which would eat a lot of processing power, my phone is very slow. It was not this slow before. I mean honestly, every single damn move is with at least a minimal lag, freeze or something. What the hell is going on here? Does JB 4.1.2 on S2 is supposed to be like that.
You guys, I need some tips from your experience write here. I really have like no time for testing roms and maybe you can help me out by recommending some kind of rom, which would not have **it load of bugs and would not lag as much as this one does. I heared about CM 10.2 4.3JB but I am afraid about bugs and all that, so I think it would be a better idea to stick with 4.1.2 or 4.2.2. So, any tips? I would really appreciate some. Thanks you guys.
I highly doubt it is caused by your rom, because almost every user is satisfied Neatrom (me included).
What kernel do you use? And what happens when you use another profile than Performance?

Dorimanx kernel. Same things are happening.
Maybe my phone is damaged or something. A few days ago i dropped it and it was a little bit wet, but it did not turned of or anything and I can use it. About a few hours ago, something weird happened: phone was at idle, sleeping and out of nowhere that sound, when you start charging your phone appeared and backlight turned on... No reason, just happened.
Anyway, do you have any recommendations how to get rid of these issues?
Pull battery out now put in hot place in bowl of rice and leave it there for a week. Water damage...probably mb replacement now mate. Water and s2's dont mix.
I9100/I9300
Well, I used to have a rom that was causing me trouble after I dropped my phone. The battery for example was terrible after it. A full wipe and a fresh install of a new rom (although I'm pretty sure you've made a good choice with Neatrom) cleared these problems.. Maybe you can try that?
Edit: and if you try another kernel?

[Q] Is my phone bricked?

hi,
my phone is Xperia Mini Pro (SK17i), recently i've unlocked the BL and begin installing some custom roms. my first custom rom is Super JB v6 with nAa kernel, it worked flawlessly, but strange, if the battery still has 15% or bit lower, it suddenly down to 1%! and my phone goes off less than 1 minutes later.
i think it has rom/kernel problem, so i changed to some roms & kernels, from flawless ICS, xNXT until now im using MIUI Life. bad luck, it GETTING WORSE! now if my phone still has 80% battery life, it goes 1%!. i think its battery problem, but after 80% to 1% shutted down, i turned on again, and going to CWM recovery. i'm doing nothing here unless to keep my screen on for checking if it actually battery problem, it should shut down for a seconds. but i've waiting until about an half hour, my phone still ON.
WTF is the problem? is my phone really bricked?
P.S. clearing battery stats don't works, and i believe that was just myth.
any answer will be appreciated. thanks
Reflash to Stock FTF and then flash a ROM ...Try being on Stock ROM for a few days IMO and check if it persists ...Get a new battery and check it ...It more looks like a faulty sensor imo ...
Am I right?
Is it possible (if unlocked propertly) to brick phone? I had never briked... But had mano bootloops and etc... But after flashing everything right all problems are solved. Am I missing something?
