hey there, as the title says, I'm interested in the nook tablet.
I have a nook simple touch, rooted, but want to be able to get a bit more of a true tablet experience.
1) hows battery life? I mostly intend to actually read, view pdfs, some online browsing, and note taking. essentially, does the nook tablet battery do well w a lot of usage?
2) how is cm7 or ics coming along? do these improve battery at all, or hurt it from stock?
3) why did you chose your nook tablet over what options you were considering?
4) is there an "updated" model coming soon that might replace the tablet?
thanks guys!

1.) Battery life is pretty good for the most part. It should treat you really well for what you intend to use it for. Keep in mind that the biggest killers of battery life are the display and WiFi.
2.) Check out the Development subforum and threads with [ROM] in the title. CM7 is further along than CM9 and has an internal version and one to run from SD card. I think the general consensus is that battery life is nearly the same between CM7 and stock.
3.) I guess the big rival to the NT is the Kindle Fire. But the NT offers double the RAM as the Kindle Fire and also has a microSD slot, allowing you to multiply the amount of storage. Not much of a contest if you ask me. This device has a lot of potential for its value.
4.) Not that I've heard. In fact, I've heard that Barnes and Noble wasn't doing quite as well with sales as they thought, so I'm not sure where the NOOK product line will go from here.
Good news, maybe they are forced to unlock the bootloader eventually.
Lesson learned.
While the NT is a great device, there is a rumored nexus tablet that is supposed to compete with the KF price (and thus the NT) coming this summer.

I'm still pretty salty about this. I was looking forward to the MeMo 370T, and I find it unlikely that Asus would release two tablets like this around the same time.
Meh, I'm pretty sure we'll see a 7" Nexus Tablet with specs that are at the very least comparable to the NT, if not better.
The key part though, will be that it won't be horribly locked down and it'll come with unfucked ICS.
The only potential downside will be a lack of an SD card; Google has shown with the Galaxy Nexus that they really don't want to progress with external sd cards and they do have quite a few of their own services (videos, books) thus they may want to limit local storage ala Kindle Fire.

Memo has been officially canceled by Asus, it was shown at CES and they canceled it shortly after, presumably due to not wanting to release two tablet (memo and nextab) of the same price range around the same time.

I don't believe this was ever confirmed though.
An "insider" source if I remember right though.
Rumors were though that Asus was pairing up with Google for the Nexus tablet so I think its a reasonable conclusion that they wouldn't want to put two nigh identical tablets out on the market like that.

Yes, I like the TF. But, I would like them to throw in the dock.
Also, I already redeemed by points for B&N gift cards so no turning back.
A 10" screen is very nice for certain uses but the size and weight of a 10" tablet is not what everyone wants. Personally 7" feels much nicer to use around the house and take with me all over the place while the 10" tablet I've used made me want to stay at a couch or table because it's not fully usable unless it's resting on something. Maybe I would get something that size as a second tablet, but I'd rather spend the money on a decent 14" laptop instead. Just me personal 2 cents
It is a nice device but weighs only 2.2 lbs.
Ergonomically speaking, I would rather get a notebook. It is not good for your hand holding that thing for long. Get a tablet that is under or close to 1 lbs. 2lbs feels way heavier than that over time because it strains your hand.

Now I'm not sure whether to get this or the nook. I'm waiting on the nook to come in the mail, but could easily return it. I love that the asus is unlocked and you can completely make it your own, with a guaranteed ICS upgrade.
The nook is much more portable and light weight. I just want my first tablet to be great at running games, playing movies, email and web browsing. No guarantee of ICS for the nook is really making it hard to decide.
Well im happy with my nt... Its rooted got new keyboard gapps amazon apps. Running 7 launcher. The thing is buttery smooth and does pretty much anything... Its small so i take everywhere. I can see how having at 10 would be almost to much
Thanks all for answers. The dilemma stays
NT, with portability and quality production but with locked bootloader
Transformer with bigger screen but unlocked and with future ICS
Locked bootloader is not a big deal for me, but I'm afraid that B&N will lock the possibility for sideloading in next OTA update
Ergonomics better screen sold me on the nt.

I ran quadrant standard on asus and it hit 1400, nook tablet hit 1800. my kids are young (9 and 10) and prefer the nook for gyro games to the ipad 2. smaller profile and lighter to carry. does what you need it to do and better than a phone. good luck on your decision.
In many ways you can't compare the two. Just alone on device size. Both do well given their form factor. True the locked bootloader disappointed many (who knows really how that issue will play out given the talented devs) but then the higher serial TF's presented their own rooting issues (until Razorclaw).
In my mind having, one 7" and one 10.1" provides me with options of use and having choices is most always good!

I never said it isn't, just saying it wasn't guaranteed. It will be (pretty much) guaranteed when the developers get past the locked bootloader.
I have both. I use the NT when reading in bed or on the couch. The rest of the time I use the TF because of the bigger screen and the keyboard.

What makes you think B&N will lock out sideloading in their next update? Why do you think they'd even want to do that? Don't you think they would have done it before they released the Tablet if they were going to do that? Bear in mind that some engineers who were developing the UI for the tablet put in a toggle for "Enable unknown Downloads". It just didn't happen by accident.

I think it depends on what you want to do with it. If you don't want to be bothered with rooting etc and the size factor doesnt matter I'd get the ASUS....and you can get the dock if that interests you.
Gf has NT, I have the TF. I like both! It just depends on your uses. NT has a nice, portable size for reading anywhere. I use the TF for pdf reading and annotating.
Older TFs have SBK1, which makes it unbrickable. There are lots of ROMs to choose from too.
The larger TF screen is better for group video watching, but the NT screen is still enough for 1 person.
The battery life on the NT is great! Lasts forever on idle. TF seems to drain faster on idle.
I was really surprised how fast the NT is when reading magazines.
I'm getting the TF Prime soon.
TL;DR
NT: Portability, Normal eBooks/B&N magazines
TF: Larger screen, Dock, ROMS, PDFs
I'm going to stay with the NT. It sounds like the developers are making good progress on the locked bootloader, and I still don't care about the cameras or gps. I'd rather have battery life.
At this point Transformer looks like a better purchase. All of the internal memory is accessible, it runs tablet apps and will get the ICS update.
NT's future is uncertain.
Where are you all finding the Transformer for $300? Tried bestbuy and it's $499
I am trying to decide on one 7" tablet. The Acer A100 is a full fledged HC tablet, but has horrible battery life and a screen with sub par viewing angles. The NT from what I have seen has a great screen, better battery life, but you lose the benefits of a full fledged tablet. I know we can side load apps, block OTA's, etc. Custom Roms are the biggest factor in making this decision, since the A100 has less development going on for it than the NT. I get my fix with my Nexus S 4G, so that takes care of that fix. I don't really want to spend more than $300 total.
As much as I like the NT, if you're looking for a full Android tablet experience, then you should go for the Acer.

Is that even possible? Something with less development than the NT? That must be a dog of a device if it is.
I have been doing some more research, and I don't think I can live with 4 hours of battery life. That is just horrendous for today's standards. I weighed my needs, what I actually would do on the device, and will be getting the NT. Custom ROMS are great, but they don't offer much to what I want to do. The most intensive game I may get for the NT would be dead space.

If you can figure out HOW to get dead space, I'd be much obliged if you'd pass along the info.
Android Market and Amazon both say it's incompatible with the Nook.
Bummer.
I read somewhere in a post regarding militia market. I don't know if it is an illegal means of obtaining apk's, but it was just an example of the most intensive app I would more than likely use.
i did the same research but i end up taking the risk and get the NT, why? because as seen with the nook color its the only tablet apart of galaxy tab that has official cyanogenmod support as well as MIUI so that is just awesome, though i was thinking to get the nook color but 50 bucks more for double ram, mic and 1ghz dual core processor was worthy for me, now i bought when i didn't realized about the serious stand-by of development cause of the locked bootloader, now yesterday i just read a post of a user stating that he tried all possible ways to root the device that just got without success that means B&N did another of their tricks to not allow us to root the device, so now i think im screwed because its already being shipped from USA to equador. I didn't mind to wait for development of ROMs but this is too much, i just hope devs find a way, i'll wait 'till january if not i'll try to sell it and get the nook color or any other. Guess was too good to be true lol. Must be optimist but as i said is a risk, take it or not is up to you.

Yeah, even the Acer has issues with dev, but Acer will be developing ICS for it. My only other option in the price range I am looking at is the KF. So, I may take the hit on hardware specs for development purposes.
i'm in a similar boat, own a Nexus S 4G and bought both a Nook Tablet for my wife and an A100 for myself.
Overall I prefer the A100. Viewing angle is honestly not as bad as reviews say, development is pretty non existant but HC now and ICS later is nice simply for having apps suited for a tablet, and Tegra is overall more gamer friendly.
Nook screen is great and I prefer the physical design, but you miss out on tablet oriented stuff like the persistant status bar and some stuff is just goofy due to the tablet not being meant for standard android use. I am however having a great time keeping an eye on adamoutler and the other guys trying to get past the bootloader.
@neonjam: Would you say that the battery life is comparable as well? Do you think the acer sync software is a hassle as well?

the battery on the A100 is only 3/4 the capacity of the NT, and I don't believe it's CPU/GPU is as power efficient as the NT's OMAP either. I don't own one so I don't know what the real-world result is though
I had the same dilemma. Went into Best Buy planning on getting the Tablet then saw the Acer there with stock Honeycomb on it for the same price. Went back and forth for a while but after playing with both it was clear the Tablet was just a much better product if you could get past the software limitations. Acer's rep as long as I can remember has always been to make cheap electronics, both in price and quality. Glad I got the tablet after all the great developers here who helped me to root it, block the OTA and get it set up to a non-B&N experience. Have been thoroughly impressed with the device for being only $250 with or without custom Roms or even Honeycomb.

Guys there a deal for today at ebay.com for Nook Tablet from B&N that gives it for only 199$
yep.. couldnt refuse at that price point.. they got rid of the coupon.. so just $199 outright.. so saves on taxes if your state requires collecting it.. debated.. but i just cant say no to a deal like that.. loved the original NC.. was a solid piece of kit.. so i know i'll love the tablet..
I would get it as well but I live outside USA so.... :/
I jumped on this too. I've been following various websites for a better price and this is by far the best I've found (without having to do any pricematch/coupon shenanegans).
And the offer runs to Feb 23, apparently. Hope this establishes the new price point !
B&N had to cut prices, Asus memo will be out very soon. And at $250 for a quad-core, with camera, GPS, and BlueTooth, it will eclipse the Nook Tablet and all bargain tablets.
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't call this a "bargain". NT cannot recognize more than 2 points on the screen at any time, the wifi is buggy at best, the internal memory is almost not accessible. All in all, it's a good ereader. And that's it. The Kindle Fire is a far superior device. My only grip with the KF is that its memory is limited to 8 gigs and no microSD extension possible.

Well I for one am still very happy with mine. The wifi bug isn't that bad, and I have confidence the devs will get it under control. I have no problem accessing ask the space I need, and the battery life is incredible.
Having great dev support is not something to take lightly. The guys working on the NT are doing a great job. My Samsung Fascinate didn't have a usable CM7 until it had been out for almost a year. I wouldn't put it past them to get better multi-touch support for this device as well.
All in all, it's a great device, and the great dev support makes it even better.

The B&N - not a good deal at $250?
Oh, come on. There's always something "new" in the horizon - better, faster and cheaper (ie, the Quad Core Asus). And if you wait long enough for the Asus, something *even* better will be "just around the corner".
The B&N is, for me, an*incredible* deal. I own a Galaxy SII, a Motorola Atrix (heavily modded) and I got an iPad 2 at the office. I can't believe how much I got when I bought my Nook for $250. I'd definitely do it again. It's *not* only a good eReader - it's a tremendous game machine (I haven't yet found a single game with any sort of lag), a great browser, a perfect multimedia device... the list goes on and on. IMHO, I'd rather have the Nook than my iPad, it's far, far more useful right now (rooted, with GoLaunch EX and minor tweaks). CM7 will only make things better.
Its problems are trivial. No true multitouch? Why would it be a dealbreaker? Wi-Fi bug? I've seen it every once in a while - my HP laptop is far, far worse. What else is there? Nothing. Again, to me, it delivers far more than I ever expected out of it.
I've seen cheaper tablets around - some chinese junk running at 1.5 GHz (LOL). They look cheap and have no warranties whatsoever. For me, the NT and the KF are what tablets are all about, and I'd rather own either one of them than wait for something that may or may not come out soon (the Asus Quad Core).

Well said i think exactly as you do and not because the a new tablet with more specifications with same or better price is round the corner means the quality will be good and the development for it will be fast, so far with the nook tablet devs have done an amazing job far before than what i ever expected. There is always people that do not appreciate the work that is being done and on top of that they ask for more, unfortunately XDA has got many of those, its a shame.
I think the nook tablet is an investment and i feel very happy with it, i will for sure enjoy it for a while and once another good deal like the NT comes out with decent hardware (not Chinese junk as @fjhuerta say) and green lights for development maybe then i would think in upgrade.

In a month or so the nook tablet and its downfalls will be completely absent. The devs have been incredible with this device and it's only getting better and better. I purchased mine on release day and my love for it grows by the day. I've owned the kindle fire as well...but I did return it because it lacked the ram power of the nook tablet, and I could certainly tell(yes I was rooted on it as well).

though as ever as soon as I buy something they announce the next version
I wonder if this deal involves the new model of NT with only 8G of internal memory (instead of 16G)? This model can also be purchased from the BN website:

take note of the 512mb ram as well so not only is the 8 gig model less storage space...but also down to 512mb system ram. I was hoping they'd keep the 1 gig ram but just lower the 'hdd' shame not :/
Hi All,
I know, there are many threads about KF vs NT, sorry for another one, I just haven't found my answer yet about following.
I'm visiting US and plan to buy a souvenir - either Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet. I lean towards NT slightly - because of the SD slot and RAM. I'm worried about locked bootloader however.
I would like to use the tablet for video playback, surfing the web, playing some games.
I'd like to have there ICS/CM9 one day. And that's the question. We have seen big progress in NT hacking recently, but it's definitely behind the state of KF development (of course thanks to B&N obstacles).
Is it only a matter of time and effort till NT gets working ICS (capable of reasonably smooth performance including video playback, etc.), or is it still a mystery, whether we ever get there? How big is the risk of ending with devs giving up due to some B&N obstacle?
Thanks for your opinions/knowledge, I'm scratching my head for 1,5 months already
Aleq
Based on what we're seeing with CM7 I don't see any impossible hurdles for CM9. It's just a lot more work and a much less mature project. I'd say NT is a no brainer over KF.
Cool, Nook Tablet with only 8GB of storage was introduces for $50 less, $199 total. It keeps the SD slot so I'd say that's a great deal.
I just hope no new bootloader (with new hacking countermeasures) comes with it or it gets cracked soon.
UPDATE: Too bad, the RAM has been cut from 1GB to 512MB :-(
I am a amazon prime member/amazon fanboy try to buy everything there and was really excited in the summer when I heard amazon was making their own line of tablets.
Then it was finally announced and I was like wtf seriously... 8gb or storage and no sd card slot plus the dreaded power button and no volume control buttons. I was massively disappointed and planned to wait till they updated the kindle but since the NT was on sale for 200 I bought it and couldn't be happier for my needs. Before I was using a coby tablet with lower res screen and no development since no firmware is public.
KF seems useless until updated with sd card/moved power button

I am really interesting in this problem too, NT hardware is much better but software development it’s far behind than KF.
What B&N obstacles are you taking about?
Judging by the youtube videos I have seen, CM9 is coming along nicely. I think once a 3.0+ working kernel is working, it will only be a matter of time.
The obstacles with the NT are B&N's bootloader being locked down and continuously changing. That keeps holding up development as new fixes are constantly being needed to progress further. Now, it seems, with the introduction of the 8GB version, it seems to be stalling a bit again while current progress is ported over to that build as well. I may be wrong on that, but that's the way it seems to me.
So I bought Nook Tablet and I'm loving it. Best souvenir from vacation ever
Running so far only rooted stock 1.4.2 + Android Market. Looking at CM7, looking forward to CM9.

The only thing I disliked about my Nook is the fact that the B&N store is useless outside the States.
So using CM7 is pretty much obligatory for me.
That's true, but partly the same applies to Amazon Store - foreigners are not allowed to make purchases there.
Hacking - root + Market (Play, eh.) or CM7 / CM9 (it's coming!) was always the main reason for me to get one. I wouldn't be buying either of two, if it would be locked to stock forever
I'm looking for a cheap Android Tablet and I know there are mods for both the Nook Color and Tablet, however the Tablet specifications are higher based on my searches.
My question is twofold: Is there *that* much of a performance difference between the Tablet/Color and: Which one is more customizeable (In the form of Root/Recovery/ROM development, etc.) and (ok twofold and a half!): Which would you recommend on a budget?
Thanks!
I apologize in advance if this question has been asked-I did not see it during my searches through the forums.
Performance on the 16GB Nook tablet is noticeably better than the Nook Color. I'm not sure about the 8GB, 512mb ram Nook tablet, but I'd imagine it has better performance, but a bit more limitation. With that said, development on the Nook Color far exceeds that of the Nook Tablet; its been out longer and wasn't anywhere near as heavily locked down as the Nook Tablet, which has hindered a lot of development of the Nook Tablet.
Nevertheless, despite limited developers on the Nook Tablet, the development is solid. CM7 is very stable. CM9 is also very stable, with the exception of hardware acceleration (no Netflix, not sure about HD youtube).
I'd say if you go Nook Tablet, go the full distance and get the 16GB. Or if you can wait, wait for the rumored Google Nexus Tablet that is supposed to be 7" and around $200.
it really depends on your expectations.. on a tight budget a refurb nook color for 99 is your best bet.. but i think youll have regrets so i really suggest saving up 300 get the 16gb at best buy with the geek squad warranty.
If I were to buy a tablet today..not back in nov. when I bought my NT, I would probably go with this..

Galaxy tab 2 7" running ICS. It has everything we are trying to get, plus it already running 4.0.3. at the $249 price point with expandable memory it is a
pretty nice device. I thought it was very smooth and responsive and I wouldn't have to hack it to get what I wanted. It has been fun to learn the rooting process and messing around, but in the end I wish that I would have waited if I knew this was going to be on the market so soon. I am sure it is lacking some things, but it was hard to see just by the few minutes I messed with it. Good luck deciding. One other thing for me is that I don't use BN content so the Galaxy tab at the same price is very interesting.
I worked at B&N and I can tell you by experience I would not recommend the Nook Color to anyone, and I told this to my managers- I despised it.
When Nook Tablet came out, I changed my opinion on it.
Moral of the story is, stock wise- nook tablet performs substantially better than the Nook color.
However, I cannot tell you how CM7 works on the NC.
I had a Samsung Tab 2 7.0 and I took it back. Most everything about it was fine except this: There was no option to move apps to the sd card. I tried two transfer apps from Google Play and neither of them worked. The tablet is supposed to have 8GB of storage, but after you subtract the OS and Samsung's additions, there is only a little over 4GB left.
A comment on the internet said that this transfer problem was a "feature" of ICS. If anyone knows if this is true, or if there is a way around it, I would certainly like to know.

...Interesting-I hadn't heard about the Google Nexus Tablet. I'm ultimately trying to find a tablet to play with that has decent performance under $200....(Ideally under $150, but that may not be realistic)....
...Maybe that'll make B & N push down the price of the Nook Tablet
Overstock. Com has the Nook Colors (refirbished) for $135, and the Tablet 16 Gb (also refurb) for $199. I'll got a refurb Tablet from them and it looks and works fine.
And yes, the Tablet 16 Gb is noticeably faster than the Color; both running CM7.

Yikes... NC for $135 is absolutely not worth it.

ya, I thought I saw some NC on Ebay for less than that (Like $99, and I thought that was high, but I don't admittedly know the value in relation to this price)
Go with the NT. There's one being sent to an Elite Recognized Developer who works on the binary level as we speak, so it's only a matter of time before everything gets unlocked.
