Gridlike / pentile matrix effect when watching video? - HTC Amaze 4G

Hi,
This is hard to describe, but is there a known issue with the Amaze's screen?
Besides the yellow banding that I have (I'm not convinced that replacing it will be better), when I play videos, I can see something akin to a pixely- pentile matrix look. It almost can look like it vibrates akin to a piezo electric effect. Hard to describe, but as someone coming from the iphone, I can easily spot this (my iPhone had no such issues). This occurs even on 720p video. It's not pixelated video, and it happens on any video player.
I have seen this on my 24" monitor, as well as on a sony laptop before, but I am wondering if this is a software issue or some type of cheap connector or an inherent screen issue.

have you seen someone elses amaze? That's your best bet. Anyways my looks excellent in opinion. If you see it in another amaze, then you have eyes of a hawk...
Sent from my HTC Amaze 3D-UHD using XDA

i see it too, but you do need eyes of a hawk to notice it. this can be best noticed by using the HTC Sense blur live wallpaper and brightness cranked up to 100%, then paying attention to the moving bubbles
but by all means its not a screen defect, its by design.

Screen quality

i have the photon , but i really dont like the screen quality (sharpness and color wise)compared to my old epic. not trying to troll here, just to ask if anyone think it can be fixed with a software update or is it a hardware issue?
The general consensus is that's just how the phone is. However some lucky people don't seem to notice screens quality (or lack thereof).
Welcome to the PenTile display.
Just the way it is. For best results, try to hold the phone far away.
I think it's actually a pretty cool technology.

Coming from the Epic, who's Super AMOLED screen also uses a pentile subpixel arrangement also mind you, you shouldn't really be noticing a sharpness difference between them. But yes, any and literally all LCDs do look duller and more muted than the Super AMOLED. It's just a nature of the technology.

Well, I can say that, due to it's white subpixels, it is a brighter display that is much more viewable in sunlight. It is also much better on toast.
Wilty
I watch videos all the time on my phone and I don't like it. It is too grainy, the color is off, too much sharpness, black is too dark and any hint of light in the scene and its too bright. HD quality videos look pretty good but lower resolution videos just look bad.
I see the problem in dark scenes where there is very little light you can't differentiate any objects in the dark area. Its all a blur. In the same scene the face has little light on it but it will be over satuated. Its like someone is shining a flashlight in his face. If any of you watch Showtime's Dexter you will see what I mean as the show has a lot of scenes in dark warehouses.
Yes I think they can make it better with software. They can turn down the sharpness. They can allow a little light to be on during dark scene rather then let it be all black (total absence of light). They can try different color temperature because right now all the human skin looks too red to me. They can dial down the intensity of white on lighted scenes.
Just got home with my Photon, which I bought primarily because it's a world phone and specs looked pretty good. Gotta agree with OP, the display is piss poor. Just might return it for something else. Kinda mad I turned in my EVO. Overall I played $99. We'll see...sigh.

First thing you need to do is turn the brightness all the way down and turn off the auto brightness too. The screen will look much better.

One thing that is kind of cool, is that the CEO actually replied to (and blogged about) an AndroidForums thread discussing the P4G screen. Spend some time reading that thread for even greater detail about the merits of the Pentile screen.
Granted, it's the CEO of Pentile, so obviously they have a bit of a bias... but she also offers fascinating technical insight behind the technology as well.
I'm very happy with the screen myself, very easy to read in sunlight especially but very bright in general (which i like). The colors were "different" compared to the evo and evo 3d I had prior but after a few hours, I started noticing more color and details in apps that I hadn't ever seen before. I feel it looks much better overall vs the evo and evo 3d. Yes, I do see the checkerboard when the display is off if I look at the right angle but I dont notice it when the screen is on.
This phone has so many pluses, and the screen is one of them to me.

You are seriously making me think that something is wrong with my phone, man. Cuz if what I'm seeing on mine is consistent throughout, there's no way a person can think it looks good. Some of the pictures look like they are in 8-bit. I'm really disappointed.

Yeah, i'd maybe compare it to the store display if possible because I think mine looks excellent, and the display in my local stores looks really good too. I usually keep my display cranked up pretty high, and it has much better blacks and white levels then i ever had on my evo or evo 3d.

I played some Netflix movies and they looked really bad to a point where I'm like Motorola couldn't have released a multi-media phone with such piss poor video and picture quality. I'm taking back the phone tomorrow to switch it out.
Here's another question. I put in my sdcard from my EVO and none of the pictures fill the screen. I noticed the same thing on the carousel view in the FB integration. The pictures don't fill the screen. Any ideas?

How does it look if you use a different Gallery app like QuickPic?
I, for one like the screen. There is no "burn in" like the galaxy s phones and the Nexus S. I can see the pixel separation, but it doesn't bother me a bit. Maybe you guys need to quit making out with your screens.
I'm not looking for fantastic. I'm coming from the EVO which, even though washed out compared to a Super Amoled, looked fine to me. The problem appears that in areas of high contrast or in shadows, the blacks are too black so picture actually looks blotchy. Believe me when I tell you I'm not the overly picky type. But image quality is definitely a step down compared to my Evo.

Nice explanation of PenTile. I also have no issues with the display and think it is quite good in comparison to my E4G. I wonder if the different perceptions are due to astigmatism. Last year I got lens implants that corrected most of my astigmatism (some remaining, but not much). Maybe people with a lot of uncorrected astigmatism are more sensitive to the display? Maybe it's the opposite and astigmatism makes the effect harder to see and I have just enough astigmatism left to make it not noticeable?
I thought the display was fine, and while I could see the screen door effect, only really noticed it while looking for it.
Then I installed a game where blue was a predominant color used in the background, Wisp Lite, currently featured on the Android Market. Anyone would immediately notice the screen door effect on the background, it was so obvious.
Mulling if this matters enough for me to consider returning it.

Is Atrix Screen lame or im wrong?

I Brought the Atrix but i have some doubts about it.
First, its the second time i got and Device with the screen a little bit Yellowish, when compared to the white from the notebook, First was the Ipod touch that compared to my brothers one, looked yellowish, then i compared to an iphone then the iphone looked more yellowish than mine. and now Atrix.. Is this normal?
And I have some problems with colors, i dont know if its Android that has less colors or else
take a look at this screenshot:
can you see the "layers" in the wallpaper? in the Pc Screen it Look perfect. Who guilty for this problem? i dont remember seeying this problem on my ipod.
Thanks
Check to see if there is an option for "high quality drawing" in this launcher. Better, unninstall launcher and see if that happens on stock too.
About the colors, yes, it's yellowish. Many cellphones are, unfortunately. Thats a bit of detail Nokia always gets right and no one notices or talks about it.
Hahah Oi Viamonte, tbm so brasileiro, mas vamos manter o ingles. Ok ill try those methods
Tried the High Resolution Drawing, didnt helped =/ is this normal in other phones like samsung galaxy S2?

The banding is most likely caused by the fact that the Atrix actually has a full 24bit screen and most other phones hop along with 18bit (dithered). On top of that most applications like the Android Gallery only display in 16 bit colour (Moto probably didn't bother to fix it either). Since there's no dithering on the Atrix (as it isn't required) you end up with banding. Just assign the wallpaper using another app which does it directly (there's a few on the market). Or, if you run CM7 you can force dithering the performance menu. Until more 24bit apps come out the CM7 dithering trick is probably the way to go.
The yellowish tinge is likely because most other screens actually fall on the reddish side (especially AMOLED pentile types).
The Atrix screen is beautiful. Try getting the black wallpaper from the market. Some people say movies look bad. People play the wrong movies. Get Moboplayer and a hi res 720 movie. The screen and colors are again beautiful. The only issue with the screen is it is not good in daylight. Set the brightness to 60 or 70....this phone amazes me every day.

[Q] Blotchy pixelated blacks/grays in low light conditions

Is anyone else experiencing poor black to gray transitions on this device? I noticed it on wallpapers and photos last night when I was playing around, so I tried it on a netflix video and it was terrible.
Stargate Continuum has an initial starfield scene just after the MGM lion where you get the full effect of the issue. I find it much harder to notice under lit conditions, but in a dark room it is absolutely terrible. I compared it to my infuse and the infuse looked perfect.
Known issue, apparently software not hardware.
The Note does not render black levels properly due to bad gamma calibration (or I think that's how supercurio describes it). At some level, instead of showing proper gradients of black levels, it just goes completely black. So this is why you see this drastic drop off and get the blocky black pixelation in dark scenes.
Ways to alleviate the symptoms for now is to use higher resolution videos (i.e., 1080p), to use movie mode, and to use a higher screen brightness ( 60 and up I think).
It's one of the downsides of the Note for now.
i noticed that when i was watching videos..
It's a well documented problem on the International version of the Note. I'd be curious to see how widespread this is on the AT&T Note.

its not just an issue with the note. seems to be common on most current gen galaxy phones
I read the threads posted above and some people are saying they replaced the phone and the new one is much better, while others are confident it software related...grrr. I am glad I got the black tie in case it turns out to be hardware down the road.
I have the same issue. So no need to return it for a new one?

Screen Viewing Angle

Hi,
I've had my Xperia S for a few weeks now and I love it, almost everything about this phone suits me.
BUT there's something that's REALLY been bugging me from day 1.
Everybody says that the screen on the Xperia S is the best you can get at the moment; high PPI, quality, colour etc.
But the one thing I absolutely hate about this phone is the viewing angle. This phone in my opinion must have the WORST viewing angles I've ever seen. You look at the phone directly and it's awesome - beautiful colours, but as soon as you tilt it slightly away from the direct angle, the colours change dramatically. Blacks become grey, all the colours turn white, looking at it actually makes me nauseous and gives me a headache. Every other position except from the 'sweet spot' I don't feel comfortable with and was considering selling the phone just because of the screen as it's the most important for me.
This is worst, because I use my phone a lot in bed and viewing angles really matter. I'm so used to seeing AMOLED, IPS and LCD (with GOOD viewing angle) screens, that using this phone makes me uncomfortable (dizzy) sometimes, but I've gotten used to it now, so I'm unsure if I should sell.
Does anybody else feel the same?

that is because you are accustomed to AMOLED, i feel the exact opposite
I actually prefer to view it slightly off centre, images / video look over contrasted to me particularly with the mobile bravia engine enabled.
I find the image also looks more uniform if you view it slightly off centre.
Either there is something wrong with your phone or your another one of these fussy sods.
I can look at my phone from an angle and its fine, but why the hell would you use your phone at an angle anyway!

Call me fussy if you want. It seems you have never been annoyed or frustrated at something you bought in your life. Good job *thumbs up*!
Testing using a image of a gradient as an example. I went on Google and searched for 'blue', a few images down there is a gradient picture (attached). Display it on your phone, and tilt it any angle until the bright middle section completely disappears, for me a left/right tilt is about 20 degrees until it's significantly noticable and at 45 degrees becomes a solid colour and I can't see the middle bit anymore. This isn't apparent with any other phone I've had.
As I said, I like to use my phone in bed and sometimes it's not possible/comfortable to constantly hold the phone at the right angle.
I have to agree. The viewing angles are bad. It has about the same viewing angels as most laptops. I don't know how it is in comparison with other lcd phones since I used an amoled phone before.
And yes I am really fussy about most things. I can find faults with every phone but I can live with it.
But if you done your homework you would know that an LCD screen has poor viewing angles compared to a AMOLED or Super AMOLED screen.
Maybe before owning the phone you should have experimented with just how good/bad the viewing angles were by trying one in a shop before committing.

I know that LCD is going to have a bad viewing angle compared to an AMOLED, everybody knows this. But I've owned a lot of phones with LCD screens in the past before, but none of them have had such a poor viewing angle as this one.
Try that gradient test with any other LCD screen you have, I'm sure the viewing angle would be better than the one on the Xperia.
In hindsight, testing the phone in a shop would have been best, but when you're that excited to get a new phone, buying online before release is what a lot of people would have done.
I dont see what the issue is. Lcd always has a more limited viewing angle.
My XperiaS is fine for me. My eyes are straight ;-)

I just love how you had to go hunt down an image to show the problem.
While watching a video or looking about the net or even looking at pictures on your phone there is no issue when looking at the screen from an angle, witch is what I'm doing now. All the colours look fine and I can see what's on the screen fine as well.

A phone with an angle might be even better, since someone is less likely to be able to read or see what you do if he is not supposed to do so.
I like the screen a lot,it looks great,it performs well in bright light and the angles are fine as well. I used an OG Droid before, the XPS's display is so much better.

I should have pictured that people who obviously own the phone are going to defend it.
From most of the replies, people think I use my phone at an angle. This isn't the case. The problem I have is that the viewing angles are poor, which leads to colours being easily shifted and this can become quite distracting especially on a mobile where it's constantly being moved/tilted. Like a shade of grey will change from dark to light with just a slight movement, if you can't notice this, get your eyes checked, if you don't care, I don't mind.
If it's all good for you that's fine. I was only trying to see who had the same mindset as I do. I can gather that a lot of you haven't seen a quality screen before. Resolution isn't everything.
i come from a galaxy s. Amoled is better in every way more vibrant colours, brighter, better viewing angles, etc. Not mentioning xperia s's resolution, the plus side on the xperia s is having a more natural colour, galaxy s is a little yellow while xperia s shows real colours. For the viewing angles, yeah it is a little bothersome even a 10 degree tilt will make it slightly blurry, if it had a 20 degree tilt viewing angle that would be fine that would be great but all in all i can live with it. At least on the train you will have privacy
I've come from Samsung Galaxy nexus, and I have to say it's better, colours are more natural it just pops, wife has iPhone4 and the screen on that looks pants compared to the experia s.

Display doesn't comply with high demands

Tell me is the screen of G2 so inglourious as shown there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2458409 ?

What do I think? I think you've been trolling the G2 forums for a long time. Let people make their own decisions. I haven't met a high demand my screen doesn't comply with, so I think the title of this thread is ridiculous as well. If you don't like the phone, buy one you do like, and stop posting nonsense please. Its hard enough to sift through the good information on XDA, people shouldn't have to weed out bogus info.
Probly you confuse me with somebody else. 'Cause it's my advices considered useful not somebody's else
I just edited my post because it was harsh. You asked a question and it deserves an answer. I will leave that part of my response.

I don't know how anyone can complain about the viewing angles on the G2. Coming from just about every major smartphone of 2012/2013 I can say I didn't notice it. Do people really use their phones at extreme angles?
On a TV or Monitor, I get it, you may have it up higher or lower or whatever, but it is a PHONE. You generally have it in front of you...
Just food for thought. Personally I am very happy with the display on the G2.
If you want great viewing angles go get something with a super amoled screen. No one is forcing you to keep your phone. Or maybe your phone is defective. I have 0 issues with my screen.

I'm thinking you must not have seen this display in person. First off, this display is by far the best I've ever seen on any phone. The S4's display didn't really look as brilliant to me as this one does despite the contrast ratio of AMOLED. I love this screen and it's disappointing for people to troll this forum posting bad things about the IPS+ display. It's absolutely beautiful. I, also, wonder why you need extreme viewing angles for a smartphone screen. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is not even close to the worst or cheapest glass anyone could find.

eh, this screen iis good, but it's not as good as the DNA. hands down, DNA is better. better viewing angles, and doesn't have that weird rainbowish effect when looking at grays and whatnot..apparently there's a layer in there that HTC bought the rights to that LG i guess didn't...the G2 screen reminds me of my Rezound, which had that same weird effect to it.
dna screen kills all, hands down.
IMHO the G2 has a fantastic display. The viewing angles are fine for what they would be used for... maybe looking at your phone on a table without picking it up. other than that, 99.9% of viewing on a smartphone is done straight on.
Yeah, the viewing angle thing I get, but in real world use it is a non-issue. I came from an S3 and that screen is cosmetically beautiful, but incredibly inaccurate and way too contrasty for my tastes. It's like putting a TV in "demo mode", but all the time. Not to rag on it, I really enjoyed the S3, but if you want the best, most accurate display around, I cannot imagine anybody besting the G2 for a while...
I am loving the screen. The preloaded videos really showcase it.

The LG screen is "tricky". You don't appreciate it until you look at a high definition video. Even the ones recorded on the DNA look better.

As someone mentioned the 2 videos they include on the phone are really nice to watch and show what the phone can do in that respect. I also like the ringtones and notifications from the Vienna Boys Choir lol. Also I live in Florida and this is the first phone where I could see the screen all through the day no matter where I was in or outside in the sun, I do have to take off my polarized shades in direct sunlight or the screen is too dark but that was the only time I couldn't see lol. Some folks complain about using the volume key shortcuts for the camera and quick memo and I say to them you can open them 2 or 3 other ways too. I haven't touched the power button since I got this phone, I just knock it on and off.
Viewing angles?
I'm looking at my phone with the most absurd viewing angles and there is only little change to what I can see. The colours are the same even looking from 160 degrees... I don't get your point here. LG is one of the best display makers out there imo...
I didn't realize how "muddy" my S4 was until I put it down on the desk next to my G2 and the DNA I have here. Someone here mentioned to me that the S4 whites were dirty or grey and sure enough it is, I just didn't notice it until I laid them side by side at the same brightness. I keep my brightness down around 40 to 50% most of the day and the G2 looks better there than the S4 or DNA to me. If I crank the brightness all the way up the S4 looks a lot better but that's not where I keep it set so it doesn't matter. I'll have a Razr Maxx HD here later and I'll compare it too just for curiosities sake. I'm very happy with the G2 screen now especially since I used that tiny nav bar mod.
As for viewing angle, I don't view my phone at an angle and I really don't want people next to me always seeing what I'm typing anyway. I don't WANT a wide angle.
If there are complaints to be had about the G2, believe me, the display ain't one of em. She's drop dead gorgeous.
