GPS dongle dosen't fit LOL! - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

My dongle arrived today (UK user, delivered by TNT).
Just before it arrived I notice a tiny crack on my touchscreen caused by the dock.
It's going back to Asus before it brakes properly but not before I send it I am getting an independant engineers report done).
To top off a good day the GPS dongle dosent fit properly. There is not enough clearance at the front where it touches the touchscreen. I could possibly force it on an make it fit but this would risk finishing off the crack in the touchscreen. So I cant even test it.
Bahhhhh!

Do you have a full body skin protector without cutouts for the keyboard? Only reason why I would see the dongle not fitting like it's suppose to.

Mine is quite snug but it fits. I have no screen protector.

I find it hard that screen protectors would make it that tight, I guess ASUS out-did themselves with making this exactly to spec. Not a bad thing lol, but crazy that people are having issues from attachments that are like less than 1 mm thick.

A crack in the screen + GPS not fitting says to me that the screen hasn't been properly fitted. If you sight along the edge of the screen is it bowed out around the connector or is the screen sticking out above the "case" more at one end than the other?

I agree it's a tight fit but that's what you want imo. You don't want it loose and moving around. That will create more problems damaging your tablet... it may also damage the 40 pin connector.
Then I'm sure people here will start complaining that it's too loose and is not snug enough scratching the tablet and such.

Oh yeah, like I said, totally a good thing lol
Just kind of surprising considering all the mass-production issues we've been seeing from them. I'm wondering how many of these turn out faulty, and if they're only covered for a year under implied warranty or if they'll replace them when they mess up even further down the road, if they'll replace them at all.

It's not made to snap automatically and lock like the keyboard dock. You will have to manually slide it to the lock position.

Tried that too, still didn't work.
I had to "locked", but nothing popped up in notification area like I thought it would. Tested out the GPS anyways and it didn't work.
Not wasting my time using their "customer support" over this, I just threw it right in the garbage.

Ah, you could have taken it apart or let someone else Lol, I love working on little stuff like that anyway, seems a shame to just trash things.
Always consider recycling too The casing at the very least could have been kept out of a landfill, and more plastic and silicon wouldn't do too well either.

pictures of dongle not fitting.
Here is a few pictures of my dongle not fitting.
It looks like the dock connector on my prime is slightly bent. The tablet never leaves my house and I use it in the dock 95% of the time. It can only have bent opening and closing the tablet and dock. This has probably caused the crack in my screen too.

I have just had another look, It looks like the dongle is the problem, not the tablet. Here's some pictures of the bottom of the tablet and the slightly bent connection port. You will notice that it's only bent very slightly (nothing like others I have seen)
The touchscreen is level and looks to be mounted correctly (unless the whole touchscreen is too high but to me it looks the same as others I have seen).
Here are some pictures of the clearances, measured using a digital calliper. It was difficult to hold the tablet, callipers and camera but the measurements are correct. You will notice that gap is about 1mm too small.
dongle
Tablet
I am now convinced (after measuring it) that if I force it onto my tablet the screen will crack. My tablet has a Micro crack caused by the dock (I will post a separate thread shortly about this showing pictures). Any pressure on the touchscreen will break it properly. The dongle will put pressure directly on the micro crack so the result would be instant break.
Everyone that owns a dock should be aware and look out for the micro cracks caused by the dock. They are very easy to miss.
Will update shortly

Thread re-opened.

This thread has convinced me that if I ever needed to use GPS on my prime I'd just use GPS tether.

Home made "dock" for the Transformer

Well, since it's taking so long for both Asus and 3rd parties to come with accessories for the transformer, I decided to take advantage of some foamcore scraps I had, and made me a "dock" for videochat, video watching and gaming. I say it's a "dock" because it is simply a bunch of foamcore boards, paper and glue (I'll probably seal it, sandpaper it, and paint it)
Right now, it's very handy, for using the tablet without having to hold it. It's angled, at a very confty angle, and doesn't get in the way (the keyboard dock, while awesome, gets in the way)
I had the images in my Dropbox gallery, but had to attach them because I'm a new user though a long time lurker. The good thing about putting them in the dropbox would be that I could add and update the pics at any time, without having to come back to the post, and edit it. Oh, and the picstures would be clearer, since I'm taking them with a 12 MPixel cam. Well, at least it keeps linkspam out of XDA
I must admit I am thinking of making my own dock via the use of a decorative plate stand (you know the ones, fold open to 90 degrees, have a lip at the bottom)

Yes I can, but I agree that it's not for everybody. What I do, is having the apps grouped spacially. 90% of the apps I use are on that screen. I really don't like going to the app drawer
you can always use a "folder type" system like smart shortcuts so u can categorize apps into "folders".
The plate idea is cool but ya might want to check out the arkon stand. same concept but its collapsible.

I use one of these at work (we have plenty in the supply closet):
I just put it on there upside down and let the screen rotate 180 degrees so I can plug in the charger up top. I can also put books of various sizes on the back end, to adjust screen angles.
@carrrnuttt - lol, thats brilliant
(..although i'd add some nice felt between the 'stand' and TF)
In case anyone was wandering (as i was) - this is a Black Mesh Business Card Holder - so you can pretend that is what you'll use it for

Why not just buy a cheap leather folio case for the transformer for $10 from ebay, they all have the ability to stand the TF up at an angle for video viewing/video chat etc

I've got one of those and I have to say it's not very good when you've got the Transformer oriented the normal way (camera at the top) because the flap that covers the bottom (Dock connector) doesn't hold well so the tablet slides down quite a bit. Great as a standard case for holding, and having with the camera at the bottom, but not so great with you have it stood with the camera at the top.

I have this case and it works perfectly. Super snug fit, no slippage, anyway, just thought i would throw that out there. I am happy with mine.
Found a way to charge mine while it is the right way around in my home made dock too.
The case hooks onto the edge of the dock leaving enough gap to plug in the charger
The plastic dock is from my GFs laptop, supposed to be a stand for that, and the thing I bent into a pyramid is a leather place mat

Keyboard dock opens "itself"

Hey guys,
just thought i would be completely happy with my tfp but then i noticed the following:
my keyboard dock sort of "opens itself" at the back when i close and open it while the tablet is docked in. i only can fix it by press it together until next time i move the tablet.
i am pretty pretty sure that wasn't the case when i closed it last night...
the dock still works perfectly but there is this "cracking" noise each time i press on the "open" edges
any suggestions? i don't want to send it back because the tablet finally works...
Thanks!
Here you can see the problem:

Edit: maybe it has to do with the temperature. Actually its really very cold here in Germany. Because of that you have to heat a lot during the day. At night it becomes cold again around my working spot. After using the dock for a couple of hours now, it seems to get better.
Having the same issue with mine.
okay, then it's probably not the temperature...
i am pretty sure i could fix it by myself but i dont own the right screwdriver. anyone here who knows where i can buy one?
I'm going to keep an eye out for this, thanks for the heads-up. Honestly, if this starts happening to mine then I'm returning the whole thing and getting an ultrabook.
Definitely does not happen on mine, maybe it is temperature related or maybe a manufacturing glitch. I don't see why you'd have to return the whole tablet just to replace the dock.
i don't know if my retailer takes back just the dock...

In some international markets, the Prime was only sold in a bundle with a dock. So, it's entirely possible that only the bundle can be returned/replaced...
That's the case in Germany. 32GB bundle or 64GB tablet only.
Same issue here. It happens if you grab the tablet by the dock like you would a notebook (one hand, left front corner). The weight of the tablet is just too much for the dock's structural integrety (I LOVE StarTrek TechTalk ;-) ) so it cracks open at the opposite corner.
Since I didn't want to pry it open and refix it I just applied two stripes of Tesa to each side at the back of the dock to prevent it from opening. Works like a charm and if you take transparent stripes it's almost invisible.

This has a Torx T5 bit in it. I just tested it on my Prime and it fits perfectly.
If that doesn't work for you in Germany (it's the US Amazon) just google "Teeny Turner" and see what you can find.
I can get them for about $3 US at Microcenter, but they don't show up in their online catalog.
PM me if you can't find one for under $10 US and we'll work something out.

I believe they actually mention it in the manual that to pick up the tablet with attached dock you should grab it near the place where it docks instead of the tablet alone. They don't especially mention lifting it from the corners of the dock, but the same thing basically applies. The tablet is quite heavy and keyboard dock is very slim, so it is a good idea to lift the device by holding the tablet and the dock at the same time or holding near the place where the devices are docked.

This is correct, my keyboard did not work at all while the tablet itself was perfect and I had to return both even as I feared that the replacement tablet will be worse. And it is worse thanks to some light bleed, but it wasn't too bad.

I am pretty sure it is the screws that hold the hinge have come loose and everytime pressure is added to either side trying to close the hinge it is causing the hinge inside the dock to twist and separate the the dock. I have seen it on laptops many times. Opening it up and tightening the screws usually fixes it.

Problems with prime casing?

I am having a problem with the prime casing.
Its kinda hard to explain so i made some pictures. What should i do?
Did you receive it that way? It is strange, especially since I don't think the charger would be nearly strong enough to bend the aluminum....sounds like an rma

Call ASUS, ask the representative for an email address to send your photos to and/or how to proceed. You souls be able to get an RMA. You could return it to the store though for a replacement or refund.
I am a bit worried about the bend because it might be stressing the glass (last thing I want) along with the discoloration (no idea what is causing it but its ugly and I don't like spending $500 on something like that.)
I could be wrong....but didn't you post this?

Maybe you can find someone that can help you bend it back so that it does not stress the glass.
Also might have been able to tie these 2 threads together.

First up, the drop was face down so it would not have discolored the back.
Second up, the drop was face down and nothing was plugged in. Thus, that wasn't what damaged it. Besides, the drop happened BEFORE (like a week) that this damage was noticed. (Im not entirely sure how this happened.)
And third up, while I showed the bent metal, I was more worried about the pressure that it might be exerting on the glass.
And finally, I am worried about why the back is discoloring which is NOT user damage.
Looks to me like something's eating away a protective coating...
Have you handled your Prime after coming in contact with rubbing alcohol or anything similar? (like Germ-X)
And you can bend the little piece of metal above the charging dock back, it's not doing anything to your screen. Mine got bent when I started my opening process right in that spot and went right back with no problem...

it happened to me too...I didn't notice notice by the 3rd week of using it. It must be bent when charging it, or it was shipped that way....anyway, the aluminum is very soft. I probably bended by the charger's adapter.
I've also bent mine back into shape, I think the charger bent it, as it was within days of getting the thing, long before I ever dreamed of opening it. I also used my finger.

my first prime had that also I thought it was from opening and closing the dock but my new one hasn't budged even in the dock. I am now thinking that it came that way ( I noticed it 2-3 days after I got it). I now think that maybe it happens in the factory if they dock them to load the OS or do diagnostics of some sort before shipping them and the tech just isn't careful docking or undocking.

Yeah, looks that way to me as well. Man, you really did a number on this one in a short period of time, eh? Lots of scuffs and scratches on the back, bent charge port on the front....
Hard to believe it just happened on its own accord. Those are the typical scuff marks you would see on brushed metal that had been rubbed and scraped. And the scratches on the back are pretty bad as well.
I have the bent charge port as well. Looks like the HDMI port is bent up as well. The cable connections are very loose, and I'm sure this is part of the cause. I have been struggling with the HDMI port since it stopped working lately, but it very surprising how this could happen so easily.

[Q] Should I be concerned about this screen bulging?

Hi
Had my tablet back now a week from RMA, but today I noticed the screen is bulging near the top (around the camera).
See attached images.
Should I send it back for Asus to remount the screen properly?
Or just live with it?
Thanks
Update:
I 'reseated' the screen, seems a lot better now, but still a tiny little bit of bulging, but it appears the top aluminium is not straight either, ever so slight curvature. Will keep a look out if it gets worse.
I have something similar on mine - you can depress the screen slightly around where the camera sits and it appears to have come away from it's moorings ever so slightly. I only noticed it the other day, though I've had the Prime for about 6 weeks.
How did you 'reseat' your screen?
Out of curiosity I checked mine, and like yours it has slight bow. Everything is solid though. Who would have thought glass would be bendy!
Gorilla glass is very bendy in fact. Just look up some videos on youtube.

I added some pressure, and it seems better now, but it feels 'bouncy' now. I think a clip/latch might be faulty/weak/broken.
Mine was in for RMA, so something like that could have happened. From a few pictures I looked at the plastic is rather thin on the upper clip/latch.
ASUS did call me, and I told them I will look if it gets worse again. I dont think this would warrant an RMA yet, but if it gets worse or even worse, crack, then at least they know about it.
I guess you could also try opening it, but be very careful.
I'm glad this thread was opened. I have the same problem but previously had trouble describing it. I noticed the slight bow when I got my prime 10 days ago. Since then I've noticed the screen near the edges around the camera and charge area creak ever so slightly when I hold it in that area.
The sound also depends on whether the metal back cover is hot or cold. I wouldn't say it warrants a replacement or re-seating the screen, but I'll be keeping an eye on it case the screen gets looser and the unit needs to be replaced under warranty. This is also related to me not unlocking boot loader.
I have a 13 inch MBA know that cause its so thin it will flex a bit. Holding the Prime in landscape I can twist flex it a few millimeters too. I dare apply to much torque though.
This happens when one or more catches is broken. I returned TFP no 5 for that reason. If it's broken, there is no way back, and the gap is so thin that you can't put any double sided tape in there. If it's bulging to an extend where you get concerned about it, take it back as faulty, it can only get worse.

Right beside the camera, there is a latch, about 3mm wide. There is nothing on both sides from it for about 3-4cm IIRC. If that small latch is broken, you have quite a lot of the screen not attached to the casing. Logically, it will bulge in the middle, slightly left from the camera. If it bothers you (and it would bother me a lot), I'd return it.

This is nothing to worry about unless you're unable to dock the device.
Mine is also slightly 'bent', but just like in the original posters picture, it is very minimal. I'm able to dock my Prime without problems and only notice it when one corner of the Prime does not completely touch the rubber knob on the dock when closing the lid while docked.
This is nothing to worry about and the reason for it is the aluminum body, which is a soft metal and can easily bend with some pressure. You can try bending it back, but be careful when doing so.
There is no reason to return your Prime like that, since the bend is minimal.

This is nothing to worry about and the reason for it is the aluminum body, which is a soft metal and can easily bend with some pressure. You can try bending it back, but be careful when doing so.
There is no reason to return your Prime like that, since the bend is minimal.

It IS a problem. It stresses neighbouring latches, which can brake off because of that. Plus, glass is stressed as well.

I'm sorry but no, it can not when the bend is up to 2mm per 263mm.

But 2mm on 8.3mm, is a huge proportion. It effectively makes your prime 24% thicker! (And out of spec IMO).

Dock touchpad damaging screen

Since a few months I own a prime, and in general I'm not very satisfied. Wifi, GPS and overall speed problems are the cause.
But now I found out that the dock touchpad is damaging the screen of the pad. I noticed because my screenprotector was damaged precisely where it touches the touchpad when the ensemble is closed. I thought this was because my screenprotector was too thick, so I ignored this.
But just some days ago I removed the screenprotector, and now there are some tiny marks on the screen exactly where it touches the touchpad. After close inspection I found out that the 'upper' part of the touchpad and the ridge above it (between the touchpad and the space key) are sticking out slightly, touching the screen. So whenever I close the ensemble, the touchpad and ridge will be touching the screen, thereby damaging it.
I'm curious if more user have this problem.
Should I RMA?
Also, I bought the transformer in Malaysia, but I live in the Netherlands, so I won't be able to return it to the retailer.
It is a design problem and all units are affected by this. I added stoppers to my unit so this would not happen, if you plan to rma, do so before the scratching damage causes the glass to crack completely.
heres a photo of my 'workaround'
Regardless of where you brought it, raise the problem with asus locally. and to be more precise, its the lower keyboard lip scratching your screen.

I found out that the exact same thing is happening with the 'upper keyboard lip'. So the screen is damaged on the bottom as well.
I looked at it closer, and it's not just the screen that's being damaged by the 'keyboard lips'. The touchpad on the dock itself also appears scratched. Probably some hard dust got stuck between the screen and the touchpad.
Wow, this really makes me angry. When I get back home next week I'm not getting off the phone with Asus before they promise to change my TF for an Infinity (not very realistic I know but worth a try).
Yeah I have too had screen scratches from dirt on the upper lip area and it made me pretty angry that they designed the rubber stoppers to be so ridiculously pointlessly thin.
I just purchased a second Dock today actually, same thing happens with it (I closed it once) so I wont be using that dock as a spare until I add extra stoppers to it either.
Adding stoppers should help prevent the glass from scratching from dirt but it's still a good idea just to ensure the upper part of your dock is clean when you close it.
I've had the exact same issue with the dock damaging the screen protector.
qwertylesh's stoppers idea sounds great and I am considering implementing it myself
But for now I am using a type of screen protector I got off Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003MDTURG/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
Does the job of protecting the screen, however the Prime and the dock do not feel very flush when closed.
I have done the same mod for my spare dock now, it works great, there's a similar stopper mod form all the corners but I find two on the glass is fine

I have not seen this happening - perhaps because I'm using a portfolio sort of case that by it's nature provides a similar sort of buffer between the screen and the dock.
My question though is why you would expect an Infinity to be any different? I haven't had the opportunity to actually examine one up close but from the pictures, both the front of the device and the dock look nearly identical to the Prime. So wouldn't you expect to have the same problem with the Infinity?

That also crossed my mind, but how easy and fast is it to disconnect the screen from the dock? Do you have to take it out of the portfolio case or can you leave it in?

I don't expect it to be different. Or maybe I do, if this damaging of the screen issue is something many people complained about. Perhaps they use slightly higher stoppers on the dock that comes with the Infinity? But you're probable right, the dock is most likely exactly the same.
Still I would exchange my TF for an Infinity without thinking, just because the other issues with the TF (Wifi, gps, performance) drive me insane! Or better still, get a refund and spend my hard earned money on something that's actually worth it. Of course, a refund will only happen in my dreams...
they (TF700) use the exact same stoppers and have the same issue.
was also getting the scratches. quick fix for me is just putting a screen cleaner wipe in between the Prime and the dock. i do intend to do a similar mod to Qwertylesh soon.
I did this^ for quite some time, I had a thinner one then what came with my TF201 that I used.
Word of caution, if you have the silver tablet, dont use a cloth that is a darker or notable color, it can (oddly enough) discolour the touchpad eventually.
My silver touchpad has some dark staining, its no big deal (especially now that I have 2 docks), just want to let you know that i've done what your doing and it does work as a stopgap just dont use a black or dark cloth, stick to white/sliver microfiber if you can.
