[Q]Rooting the device is worth? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been reading some threads about rooting. But then i asked myself is it worth?? . I mean what are the benefits that i get from rooting device?
I just dont get what's the point of rooting the device

If you have to ask, then it's probably not worth it for you.

What are the benefits that i get from rooting?

Bottom line: more control. Both helpful if you need it, and very dangerous. It allows you to change system level stuff, which lets you change icons/themes/system apps/etc. (which, if you don't know what you're doing, will make it very easy for you to break things on your phone - resulting in problems, bootloops, even bricks)
EDIT to add: maybe you should just read this and this.

Also it let's you remove bloteware like stock apps that you don't need but like Ctomgee said it is dangerous if you don't know what you are doing

If you never used a custom rom, then rooting is not for you. The best thing rooting does is gives you the control of the phones. In simple words, it a thing for advanced users only.

I never rooted until a week ago and now I'm rooted running AEON all themed and nice lol.

I was thinking like that but now I have stock but rooted and the benefits are :
- You can backup all ur data
- I used a mod to change the status bar icons(check my signature), but u can find mods for everything
- you can install a custom rom
now its better that I have everything backed up . Good luck in making your choice .

Rooting is like hacking it gives u super user permissions like all admin rights,u can take control of each part of ur phone,,cause there r apps tht allow u do tht wen ur rooted...its like a coin with 2 side god and bad...if u don kno wat ur doing afta rooting u can brick or make it useless or it may bcome problamatik.i rooted only for backup and some apps thts all not for ov,oc,tweaks.....

[Q] How to put roms on etc

hi all i just got my galaxy s2 today and have no idea where to start with putting a rom on ot anything. so any help would be great thanks
First you need to be rooted(your phone not you)and then go to the Development section and you will find a list of different ROMs.Its a matter of finding what you want in a ROM and downloading and trying each one.Usually the ROM page has the download and install instructions writen on it.You need to be rooted to have CWM.Ill leave a link to my ROM so you can see what I mean.Below the different ROM versions you will see install instructions. If your not sure what root is let me know
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290468
Spend some time using your phone to get used to It before flashing. This will give you a better idea of what you like and don't like about it.
Armed with that info you can read up on each custom Rom to see if they offer what you want.
Read read and when you think you are ready to flash read some more.

X2 read alot, play with the phone, figure things out. There is so much to learn so you don't turn your phone into a brick. Rooting means you become a superuser, you take ownership so you can customize your phone.

Please don't even think about flashing a custom rom or rooting your phone until you're comfortable/confident enough to do it without making posts like this.
I have seen so many people in your situation on here stuff their phone up over the last few weeks because they were in too much of a hurry to mess with their phone.
AceOfClubs (and others) has given you good advice, heed it :-|
Read the CFRoot thread until you are so confident with rooting the phone that you could do it in your sleep, and then root your phone with the CFRoot kernel that corresponds to your current stock kernel. Not before.
From there, read the various development threads about different roms/kernels, get to know the various features/advantages of each (and ask questions if necessary...about the rom/kernel itself, not the process of flashing same) and then when you've settled on a rom or kernel and you're completely confident about the flashing process, flash it.
Doing this will mean you'll get it right the first time. This will result in:-
A) You not posting yet another "OMG mah fone is teh brikked helpz !" thread.
B) You not having to do without using your phone for x days (weeks) should you mess it up.
Clear ? Good

Root is changing the kernel in your phone to give you super user access which is needed to flash ROMs and firmwares. Also along with flashing there are other things to read up on like an EFS/IMEI file backups which are vital, also nandroid and Titanium backups. As you can see there are alot of good people here willing to help with good advice and all are correct in saying that you shouldnt rush into things.Take your time, read up and dont be afraid to ask questions.Play with your phone and when you know it well enough and have seen enough threads on what and what not to do then you can take the first step and root.First read up on rooting then EFS/IMEI backups and why they are needed. The rest will come in time.Id rather see you here asking questions and not in another thread saying "Help I just bricked my phone!!"

How to root and 'best' ROM

I'm a noob who needs to learn how to root their sgs2. First Android phone but I'm looking to open up and get more from my phone.
Also there seems to be so many roms and people taking of bricking. If anyone could explain the 'best' rom and what to do once my phone is rooted I would appreciate it thanks

If you don't know what you want root for, I'd suggest not rooting.
The best ROM is <insert name of ROM here>.
My advice: stick to stock.
Man, people need to use the search button nowadays :/
As well as Google.
If you're an Android noob and you start rooting, there is a high chance of failing to root HENCE a brick would occur. Most bricks you hear or see that people get are from careless actions or they don't know what in god's name they are doing.
Do not make that mistake.
Research before attempting because I assume no matter what, you want your device rooted.
Make sure you have an GT-I9100 device, check by turning on and off your device.
The best ROMs I have used, and maybe you should stick to for a while, is either CriskeloROM, SensatioN Rom, CheckROM or Lite'ning ROM, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253665
Use Odin to flash a custom kernel, for example Ninphetamine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179814
Follow guides on ROM pages to install their ROMs, installing a ROM automatically roots your device.
Good advice from previous poster.First read up on rooting and what it brings to your phone as it doesnt just bring flashing rights. As for bricking, its easy to brick your phone if your not carefull and dont read the instructions well and put the wrong kernel in Odin. Its an easy proccess but some people just dont follow the guides.Bricking in some cases is self caused. The ROM thing is a hard one cos there is no perfect ROM when everyone has different needs so its a case of read each ROM thread and choose what you like.If you dont like it try another. No one here on this site who knows what they are doing,Im quite sure, has only ever flashed one ROM in there time here.Best thing to do right now is stay stock until you read up on some important facts about flashing
1.Rooting,how why and what it brings.
2.nandroid backup
3.EFS/IMEI backup and restore-super impotant cos if you loose this info your screwed
4.the difference between each one and what each Dev brings to his/her ROM
5.Flashing.Some are done via recovery and some via odin. Also bootloops and how to get out of them
if i were you i'd first read all bout roms/kernels till your eyes bleed
then once you know how to do it, well pick a kernel and a rom which suits your needs
learn from people mistakes, i usually read couple pages on how people messed up while flashing so i dont fall in the same, and in case you brick your phone also have a way to recover it prepared
Maxwell0;2109742
Also there seems to be so many roms and people taking of bricking. If anyone could explain the 'best' rom and what to do once my phone is rooted I would appreciate it thanks :)
As asked if you know nothing and that knowledge is so limited you have to ask the banned question what is best rom then stick with stock until you understand .
Likewise why root if you dont know why .

Why don't you take time and search all is posted it's not that hard..
yea, when i got my phone i used stock for a while until after a while i decided to root and flash different ROMs. was really scared and overwhelmed by all the info on XDA at first, but after reading everything over and over again , bookmarked tons of links i picked up the courage to root and started flashing ROMS.
haven't looked back since

absolute beginner be warned

OK this is my first ever foray into "tinkering" or Modding anything ever (I don't know much more than FB and Google) so I am a bit thick but want to learn. I got a Galaxy S2 GT I9100T and it is currently network locked and I was wondering if by rooting it I can remove the lock? Or is there another way to remove the lock which I can do without having to pay, but would like to root the phone for some experience anyway.
Thankyou for your time.

before rooting try 2 unlock ur phone since rooting will not unlock ur phone but helps in installing custom roms
google for unlocking ur phone and then root the same
Google around and you will find a way to unlock your s2. I'm at work so i don't have time to find the link.
Then..
Rooting the original rom will open a possibility to flash custom roms (Android OS) and do what ever you want to your S2. Note that installing root will do everything for you so you can start flashing roms, the kernel(drivers and stuff) is installed when rooting AND the custom recovery also. Recovery is where you flash roms and other things, things you should have read everything about before flashing.
Recovery is like an app that starts instead of Android os and from there you can do all the tinkering you want to what ever you want.
So no, unlocking will only allow you to use what ever carrier you want.
Just read everything you can find about what you are about to do.. and please... read/search a tread for tour issue before asking about it in a thread.. :-D
Good luck and have fun!
ANDROID FTW
for unlocking the phone u can try this link below

PS : read the user review of the same first
That requires rooting so I guess that will be my next step then will look into that tomorrow/today when I am a bit more alive.

ROM (Read Only Memory) these are the firmwares or operating system that comes pre-installed with u phone, there are also various types of custom available on this xda dev forums for download.
now u will be asking what are these custom ROMs
Answer to it - When we buy a new phone (any company it may be from) it comes wirh all necessary as well as some unnecessary apps
(bloatware) with it, most of dont like this bloatware bcoz we dont use them and some of them cause unnecessary battery drain, and moreover we dont have root access to our phones for which we search for custom roms.
CM9 (cyanogenmod 9) its the most famous custom rom available known for its fast performance, root level access, no bloatware etc etc
again so it mean they for customization of phone and for fast performance if i wnat to install them how i can i do that and also if they safe mean no harm for phone i have gingerbread GS2

If you unlock your bootloader the official way, you can install a lot of roms around here, but you will loose warranty and the DRM.
There is also a way to unlock it via testpoint method, you donĀ“t loose your DRM
I unlocked my bootloader the offical way, i dont use DRM, and i can install all that wonderfull custom kernels here, many of them make your phone much smoother and safes battery, thats why i unlocked my BL
If you have unlocked bootloader you can flash a kernel only, like KRsH Kernel ICS 3.0, this kernel will root your .587 on first boot easy way to root yout phone, but remember you need unlocked bootloader and this will void your warranty and you will loose DRM (depends on the way you choose to unlock your BL)
For me, i prefer this way rooting my stock FW.

sure bro. am not tired of reading.. jus lil confused .Dats y i created thread specifying my device's configuration hoping some one will exactly post how to root it
You are the rude one by acknowledging that there are guides out there and decide to open a thread instead of doing like everyone else did, search, learn, search some more, act. I rooted my phone 3 days after getting it when there was half of the guides out there atm, and with little to no knowledge about android, and i am not some sort of super-genius, i can assure you that.
Here it's all explained along with a nice android dictonary http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568792
And this is a thread started by mihan especially for noobs (and it starts by saying "i know there's lots of guides but people keep asking so here's one more") http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568792
As a matter of fact you got bashed by pretty much everyone who replied.
The info is all out there, if after all that you still don't underastand what root is or have doubts about it perhaps it's not a path you should follow.
As zeppelinrox says "calling yourself a noob is no excuse, do like everyone else of us did, search and learn, it's all out there", if you encounter problems following root then people will be there to help, but your thread sounds a lot like "guys, how do i power on my phone? i can't be bothered reading the instruction manual" and that is rude, disrespectful and demotivating towards all the people who took time to make the aforementioned guides (btw, i only took the first two sticjkies of this post, and all is explained there, there's no need to search further).

[How-To] Rooting guide for 2011 xperia devices
Use this guide. The author has clearly explained how to root including screenshots. Thats pretty much spoon feeding right there. still if u manage to brick your phone dont worry we are here to help. keep in mind that rooting a phone requires a lot of patience, be sure that ur phone is 100% charged before u start and backup your sms and phone contacts before rooting. How to backup sms and contacts u ask ??
try googling it

You are in Aroma Installer ... Some devs use this Aroma Installation in their ROMs...
Choose your device properly and then choose your language...
