ROM (Read Only Memory) these are the firmwares or operating system that comes pre-installed with u phone, there are also various types of custom available on this xda dev forums for download.
now u will be asking what are these custom ROMs
Answer to it - When we buy a new phone (any company it may be from) it comes wirh all necessary as well as some unnecessary apps
(bloatware) with it, most of dont like this bloatware bcoz we dont use them and some of them cause unnecessary battery drain, and moreover we dont have root access to our phones for which we search for custom roms.
CM9 (cyanogenmod 9) its the most famous custom rom available known for its fast performance, root level access, no bloatware etc etc

again so it mean they for customization of phone and for fast performance if i wnat to install them how i can i do that and also if they safe mean no harm for phone i have gingerbread GS2

also this one below

u go thro them carefully and try understanding things over there, then after sufficient knowledge aquired, please proceed further to explore more.
if u find difficult to understand the same on those thread, then i would advice u to not to venture into anything silly, since the same could potentially brick ur phone.

If u have free time, I suggest u try GB roms first, they are old but all of them are safe, new Rom on ICS or JB are unstable and someone with little exp like u might be scared to get a soft/hard brick be careful with the Kernels too

I have rooted my SGS2. What to do next?

Hi all,
I have rooted my device according to the following method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653
My phone specs are as follows: Stock Rom.
PDA:KJ2/ PHONE:KI4/ CSC:KJ1 (XSG)
Now that I have rooted my device, I would like some help what to do next for optimum performance and to remove the bloatware? I am very new to android world. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
trawl the rom threads see what you like the look of, im not saying this just becausei use it, but take a look at the litenin rom thread in my sig, thats simple to flash and plenty of instructions, i have found most roms are are based on nothing much being changed unless you go for miui or a cm7 rom,
if you wanna remove bloatware i personally set my phone up n use system app remover, everyone has there own personal choice for roms so its basically take a look at the thread if u like the look of it give it a shot,
there is plenty of help and advice in the stickys and the rom threads if you get stuck.

Thanks a lot Demon_man for the reply. I have noted few things in lightening ROM which need clarification.
1) It is based on 2.3.4 while mine is 2.3.5...should I go back?
2) It doesn't support Right to left languages..They say to install older versions.
3) what is the battery life with lightening ROM?
I shall be thankful for further help.
sorry thought i had updated my sig litnin is now un supported as far as im aware the dev left but this thread has taken over the litnin rom,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334124
RtoL languages i wouldnt no sorry not without asking or going through the whole details.
battery life is excellent simple as
and the link i just gave like i said is the litning rom updated

[Q] custom roms for SGS2

hey have any of you guys installed a custom roms on the SGS2 i have the phone rooted and i was contimplating installing a custom rom just wanted you guys information on how safe it is to do so. I was acutally looking for a nice ICS custom rom but apparently i would need one for my kernel(XWKL1). What would happen if i install a custom rom of ICS ment for a different kernel would it brick my phone?
thanks in advance for any information.

probably but you are better off reading and learning before bricking your phone
ICS is yet to be released but we do have a buggy leaked ICS test rom you need to know how to recover before flashing .

Yes it is safe if you know what you're doing and for you that means don't go anywhere near an ICS ROM try a Gingerbread ROM first but before you do that read and read and search and search.
Just practising my speed typing....
wow thanks for such a quick reply so for example if i were to install the Omega rom i would need to get one for my kernel version only right? Then if would need to revert all i need to do is flash my old insecure kernel back and i would be back.
edit: - i didnt see B3311 post. ok i am a lil confused now if i were to install a custom rom ment for a differnt kernel would it work or would i brick my phone?
Kernel version doesen't matter.

Search, Read, Backup and try. Everything you need to know is in the threads. Please read friend that is the only way you get to learn. Look at me. Been reading upon the threads once i had my galaxy s2 just before xmas and i have read upon two months before i got my phone. Now even though i only joined recently i know near enough what i need to do regarding as rooting and flashing roms and themes go. But i still search whenever i can for what i need before i have to ask questions. And most of the time it is right there infront of you. Also another thing if you think the search engine is crap on xda use google. Most of the times it gives you what you are looking for.
Not having a go but today mininum have been two three threads what rom is the best and what one to use and so on. Anyway good luck with the flashing and hope you enjoy whatever you choose

And the key to all the reading is that you are less likely to brick your phone more likely to be able to recover from problems.

True but even with all the reading at least you will feel more comfortable about going about and rooting the phone and flashing a rom. That way at least you do not have to expect others to spoonfeed the information to you. Also when you flash a rom for the first time you will feel great about yourself cause you did it all by yourself than asking others to help you. Hope that makes sense.. and to what you said also you have a great point and i always read your posts when you help people JJe as you are one helpful guy.
Hey, I just contacted Google and advised them to remove the Google search widget that comes standard on every android phone's home screen.
It useless I told them, nobody seems to even notice or use it. Heck, why search when you can just ask?
Still waiting for there reply.

to be clear i never asked which rom was the best and which one to use. I have been reading up on all the different roms available i have narrowed it down to the ICS and the Omega rom and i know how to flash the roms the instructions there are quite clear my only query was about the kernel version for which i could not find a solution. Now i have another question since you guys are saying the kernel version does not matter then why are they country specific and suppose i use a kernel ment for USA would that mean when ics finally got released here for the sgs2 i would need to reflash my phone with the gingerbread 2.3.6 version before i could get the official ICS update from kies?

let me make this clear. Different variants of the s2 hence why you see different forums. If you have an international version then you are safe to flash whatever you want in this forum here. So if you see USA version I would steer clear it as it has nothing to do with the international version if that makes sense. Regarding your other question well yes flash BBL to stock official ROM and that is it

The kernal is not related to country or carrier. The csc is.
Practically all custom roms come with working kernals and modems for the rom.
As for getting the official upgrade, you can reflash your original firmware, but most here just download the new official firmwares from the Intratech thread or sites like sammobile and flash it with Odin. No need for kies. I don't use it at all except for when I first got the S1 in 2010.

I searched the forum and found an updated touchwiz

I just dont get what's the point of rooting the device
If you have to ask, then it's probably not worth it for you.

Bottom line: more control. Both helpful if you need it, and very dangerous. It allows you to change system level stuff, which lets you change icons/themes/system apps/etc. (which, if you don't know what you're doing, will make it very easy for you to break things on your phone - resulting in problems, bootloops, even bricks)
EDIT to add: maybe you should just read this and this.
Also it let's you remove bloteware like stock apps that you don't need but like Ctomgee said it is dangerous if you don't know what you are doing

If you never used a custom rom, then rooting is not for you. The best thing rooting does is gives you the control of the phones. In simple words, it a thing for advanced users only.
I never rooted until a week ago and now I'm rooted running AEON all themed and nice lol.

I was thinking like that but now I have stock but rooted and the benefits are :
- You can backup all ur data
- I used a mod to change the status bar icons(check my signature), but u can find mods for everything
- you can install a custom rom
now its better that I have everything backed up . Good luck in making your choice .
Rooting is like hacking it gives u super user permissions like all admin rights,u can take control of each part of ur phone,,cause there r apps tht allow u do tht wen ur rooted...its like a coin with 2 side god and bad...if u don kno wat ur doing afta rooting u can brick or make it useless or it may bcome problamatik.i rooted only for backup and some apps thts all not for ov,oc,tweaks.....

How can i add the S3 function with s voice on my phone? What others app should i add too?
Any adivice for a noob is welcome!

Sorry for asking the question in a wrong section.
If i`ll update to the newest version, 4, is there a way to come back to 2.3.5?
Should update be done before trying to add a custom rom? or should i add it now and after rom?

New SGS3 user need help/advice

hi im a new sgs3 user also new in the android platform.. i was wondering if you experts can give some advice regarding customizing an android phone.. or how to use things like rom, kernel and stuff XD let me give some details about the phone i have
SGS3 pebble blue
baseband version : I9300XXDLID
Kernel Version : 3.0.31-256827 (stock)
android version : 4.1.1 (stock)
i tried reading the forums but the terminology is for techsavy persons XD unfortunately im not one of those hehe.
any advice would do TIA!
for starters you can root your s3.you then have the option of staying stock and rooted or flash custom roms.being on a custom rom gives you options like themes and mods and of course, the leaks.:victory: as for custom roms, theres so many kinds you have to try them out yourself to decide.theres also the stock deodexed roms giving you the stock experience while being able to theme it and add mods too.

sorry but how can i root do you have a guide in doing that hehhe sorry XD
i used CF-Root which i forgot the version and cant find the old thread(one with supersu+cwm app+cwm recovery).
anyway you can try S3 Toolkit which a lot say is more newbie friendly(haven't tried it myself) just follow the exact guide word for word(as much as possible).
or CF Root (also follow the guide)
depends on you which think you prefer/need.read the guides carefully and dont rush.better safe than sorry.and just a reminder to make sure you have i9300 and not the other variants(some come here and cry later cause they didnt double check).
basically you'll need root(Supersu) and CWM recovery.the rest is optional in my opinion.others would say otherwise so try to read about the stuff before you install them so you know and understand which is which.

Before you root your phone decide what you want you phone to do that it does not do now. I rooted my SGSI first after 2 years of use. After i had rooted it i spent weeks googling "I've rooted my phone, what now".
There are hundreds, if not thousands of apps that you can download and try now that allow you to modify the look, feel and functionality of you phone.
If you want to open apps by swiping or tapping or double tapping you home screen, try Nova or Apex launcher. If you want text instead of icons or both try sslauncher or minimalistic text.
The list is long.
I am using sslauncher and this week phone looks like this: (see enclosed picture). Next week it will look completely different.
One last word. Download and install SwipePad and all of its addons. It makes a smart-phone awesome.
