Recently got Vibrant its rooted and flashed to Trigger but i'm inclined towards SimpleHoney since its a new phone none of my contacts or any useful data is there so do i need to back up ? I know i need to move to Stock Eclair but is the Titanium backup necessary ?? Or do you guys think i should stay with Trigger ?

How familiar are with rooting and flashing? For now maybe you might want to stick with trigger. Either way check out this thread it has a lot of good info. Not sure what your phone has for apps if none you can get tb of the market if your new rom doesn't have it. Do you know how to do a nandroid backup?

I haven't done any flashing yet nor backup have gone through the manuals and it seems pretty straight forward my only concern is do i need to care of nandroid backup even if i dont care of data since its a new phone ?
Nandroids not gonna help you if you move to different firmware. If your running 2.3 and you try to restore a 2.2 or 2.1 nandroid then its not gonna werk. Still its always a good idea to backup just in case. Honestly I'd just start fresh, its YOUR phone now and we all have our own preferences.
Save contacts to gmail, thats really my only tip. Good luck!
Don't worry about TiBackup....WORRY about making nandroid back-ups. Nothing is worse than being new to this and borking something and NOT having a solid back-up to flash to.
Why should i be even worrying about Nandroid backup since i dont have any data or contacts in it ? (That's what i'm trying to understand) And yes its stock was Eclair so i need to move to that then flash with Simple Honey.
Also i see in Simple Honey thread it says its for experienced user , does it mean i should avoid as if now ? and do it after i have flashed 2-3 times
Doing a back up would not be necessary ...if your going from 2.2 to 2.3 .. just read the op carefully ... its pretty simple

I just got my tab 2days ago and am interested in overclocking it.
I read on a site that it is recommended to backup my current ROM before installing the OC Kernel.
The site mentioned that backing up of the ROM "doesn't save anything on your internal storage but does save all your settings and apps."
What exactly does that mean?
1.Does it mean that all my music files,video and pictures get deleted?
2.What if those music files,video and pictures were present when I made the backup?
3.Is Save Game Data affected? Example: I make a backup of the ROM where I am at level 20 of a certain game.
3 days later, I advanced to level 40 when I decided to do a restore.
Do I revert back to level 20, remain at level 40 OR restart from level 1?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
If you're talking about a nandroid backup through clockworkmod, then EVERYTHING exactly how it is will be saved.
But there are other options for overclocking. If you're rooted, you can use an app called "SetCPU"
Oh and...if you're level 20 when you backup, then reach level 40...when you restore the backup, you will be level 20 because thats how it was when you made the backup. If you reach level 40 and want to keep it when you edit your system in some way again, then make another backup.
So a nandroid backup is the same as a ROM backup + Everything on it backed up as well. Am I right to say that?

When you say rom back up, do you mean a back up using rom manager? If so, yes, it is the same as a nandroid backup. In addition, when using rom manager, you can change the label of the back up file.

Yes a nandroid backup is a complete snapshot of your system including the SD card. However you should not use the rom manager app as it is buggy with our tabs. Instead boot manually into clockwork mod recovery select backup and restore > backup. This will make a complete backup and save it on your SD card. If something goes wrong you can boot into recovery and flash it. If you need instructions on how to get clockwork mod recovery on your tab see the sticky thread in the Dev section.
Ah I see. I flashed clockworkmod recovery already, but whenever I backup, I get some error just after "Backing up data", something along the lines of ".android_secure" not found, skipping data backup.
When I added that directory in my tab and tried backing up again, I get some Volume error, can't remember exactly what it is. I think it's "Inaccessible Volume" or "Volume inaccessible".
I dare not try it again to see the message lest I mess something up and brick it. Any insight on that?

Tomorrow night i will be reloading my phone as i would do every 6-8 months to mainly clear all the crud i accumulate! I am not rooted but would like to backup save games for my games (angry birds for example) how would i go about doing this?

Ok, if your phone is rooted, simply download titanium backup and use it to backup all of your applications and games. If you need more assistance in this, e.g. steps. Don't be shy to ask This is after all, what this forum is for!

you can only backup your personal data, and user settings stored in your phone untill you root your phone,
No applications and whatever installed in your Phone can be backed up and restore without root privilege.
EDIT: My knowledge was limited, thanks to MistahBungle for giving the idea about Mybackup Pro- I really want to purchase it for my one unrootable HTC phone, which I have to do factory reset frequently.
Not rooted = use Kies. Or MyBackup (can't vouch for how good/bad this is as I've never used it).
Easiest backup solution is rooted, use CWM to make Nandroid backup of entire system, & Ti Backup to backup apps.
Edit to add - According to the Google Play entry for My Backup Pro, it seems on a non-rooted phone you can backup apps but not app data/settings.
One huge advantage of a Nandroid backup is that you can try different firmware and restore your original quickly without flashing .
Nandroid backup of GB try ICS dont like restore GB Try custom rom dont like restore GB .

SOLUTION FOUND, ALL PROBLEMS SOLVED
Hi, I recently installed Android 4.0.4 to my Galaxy S2. The reason I am asking these questions is because all/most of the documentation written for them seems to be written for a Galaxy S2 with 4.0.3 or below.
Basically, the latest update was bad, made the system look ugly, makes phone signal drop, battery drain, some texts drop, and Silent mode seems to be no different from vibrate mode in that it still vibrates. What I want to do is root my Galaxy S2, backup all of the apps, SMS, MMS, Call logs and their data (So that when I restore the phone, I don't have to start games like Asphalt 6 and Cut The Rope over again) and then install CM9 + Google Apps and restore the apps and their data. Is there an easy way of doing this that's suitable for a first time rooter and flasher?

Ok, I read through it and it seems like it's not too complicated, but when it says "Internal SD Card" does that mean my MicroSD card or something different?

No, internal SD card is your internal storage. Your microSD is external as you can take it out

As for backing up apps and games etc....titanium backup. I was advised to use the pro version, will never turn my back on it. As for the rom and root it depends what kernel wnd rom you want to use. My signature has links to a reliable kernel and rom thats based on CM, AOKP and a few others rolled into one, magic config link is also usefull to maximize battery life

Ok, also, is anything likely to go wrong during the rooting process? I'm trying to backup via Kies before doing anything, and Kies keeps failing and telling me to reconnect. I've tried restarting the PC and phone, and it keeps doing it, some I'm wondering whether I should bother backing up with Kies at all.

it's your internal storage (Phone), not the microSD card...

Only thing that will happen when rooting (providing you use a kernel that is trusted, some have emmc cap erase bug, messes things up, luckily i aint had that before) your get a yellow triangle when booting your phone, this can be removed using triangle away app which resets your binary to say it hasnt been tampered with. Aslong as you follow instructions fully, you should be fine as for kies, odin hates it, disable kies or uninstall it from your pc. Backups are always better with titanium, your probably find that your apps are backed up to google but may need to restart games etc where as titanium saves everything so you start from where you left things

Ok, so I decided that I'm going to use Method 1 in Stileth's signature ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794 ) would this apply for that? How dangerous is that method. Also, I can't backup with Titanium before rooting, which was my main concern, as I wanted a backup in case anything went wrong whilst rooting.

Personally i used this link the 1st time i rooted http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=litening+rom i cant see any problems with the link you sent though so shud be fine, seeing as you cant do a backup at the moment, i think your going to end up needing to restart all your games etc after rooting and installing a custom rom (if your doing that aswell) i would strongly advise to make a nandroid backup before you do anything though, most links will advise you to do that aswell. atleast if anything does go wrong you can reflash your phone back to its original state.

the nandroid backup is just a safety thing so if anything does go wrong during root, you can flash straight back. rooting wont disturb any of your settings or games etc so once rooted your be fine to use titanium for a full back up before using a custom rom

haha we all started as noobs at 1 point, flashing gets easier all the time, aslong as you read posts fully and follow instuctions fully, you shouldn't run into any major problems, if you do there is always someone on here that will be able to help and 90% of the time the answer is already somewhere on the forum

Ok, quick question, what will Titanium do with the apps on my SD card. Do they need to be backed up, or are they safe since they're on the SD card? Or does Titanium back them up anyway?

once you start using titanium it will back up everything, everywhere. you can change filters to only back up what you want, it will do automated backups if you set it all up (the pro version is definitely advised as you can also freeze or remove system apps to improve battery etc but do not rush into that as if you remove or freeze something then it could have effects on other parts of the phone but there are a few useful guides on that side of things) when cahnging roms though, do not back up anything written in red on titanium (those are system things, if you restore red items on new roms, it will interfere with the new system settings and cause force closes etc, again there are guides about for titanium aswell but it is easy to use

Ok, whilst I will probably buy Titanium backup at a later date, is the paid version needed for what I'm doing right now. I say that because I literally do not have enough money in my bank account for it (I'm 14 )

as far as i remember the free version will let you back things up and restore them, the pro version lets you do the freezes etc. it took me a while before i went to the pro version

I have rooted a phone before however this si the first time rooting the galaxy s3. I rooted a galaxy s previously and I want to know if its possible to get apps in alphabetical order. At the moment all my apps after the standard ones are in a random order.
Second, according to titanium backup I haven't backed up temple run 2 or angry birds. Or I can't find the restore section like before?
When rooting the phone I had a program called CMW installed? Clockwork something it was and now that is gone do I need it for anything?

YES. when you're on TouchWiz, you can click Apps>Menu>View Type>Alphabetical Grid this feature is in JB

If you haven't made a backup yet, then you should make one.. the backed-up files are in .gz.. to restore them, just go to the titaniumbackup and click on restore

Thanks that sorted my app problem out, as for apps titanium backup doesn't seem to of worked as far as I can see. :/ I didn't lose much only a week on my 4-weekly bus ticket and temple run 2 data really which I ain't to bothered by next time i'll ensure back up is done 100% correct.
