Lumia 800 discharge whilst USB connected - Nokia Lumia 800

Hi, new to XDA, have searched for this problem but not found any threads yet.
I have two Nokia Lumia 800's each with the latest 12072 update. Here is the scenario.
Lumia 800 has 75% battery life. Leave connected to PC overnight, PC is turned off, wake up, phone has 2% battery life.
The phones are both discharging when connected to USB without the PC even being turned on
This issue was not evident before the 12072 update.
The reason i use this is because i set my PC to shut down after 3 hours so my phone fully charges for the next day. PC is shutting down now and phone is charging over the course of 6 hours connected to USB but with the PC powered off.. Strange?
Any ideas?
I have one from the Vodafone network unlocked and on Telstra. The other was a fully unlocked phone and is also on Telstra.
Thanks for your help.

Could be a bug I guess, since most people don't use PC to charge phones.
A PC charge is not sufficient power for the Lumia 800, they use fast charge (500-600mAh), PC's use around 100mAh max I think, stick to wall chargers, it's bad enough with the Lumia's battery issues, let alone using the PC to charge it, only use official wall chargers with the Lumia 800 to get the maximum charge.

What about using Gigabyte mainboards red USB sockets with 3X charge? Has anyone had any results with this? (if so i may replace my MB)

Hi sharpgfx,
wouldn't you agree, that's a waste of energy to run your pc, which consumes
much more than 500mA like the nokia charger, only to charge your phone?
regards
donpromillo

I am also using a Gigabyte motherboard. And yes, I charge my phones using my PC even when my PC is off (yes, certain USB ports still have power).
I have been having similar problems with Lumia and I have given up on finding a solution. My other phones behave as expected (as long as they are connected, they will be charged).

X10 mini 2.1 Discharges when charging via USB

Ever since I updated to 2.1 it seems that when my battery gets around 15% and I try to charge it via USB, nothing happens and the battery just drains even faster.
The only way to make it charge, is to switch of the device entirely and charge it while it's off.
Im not sure if anyone else has this problem?
I'm not entirely sure but I think that's a bug that has always existed on the X10 series, it has happened too me too in Donut
Yeah, I've seen this happen too. Turning the phone off and on again usually seems to make it charge properly
When charging via a laptop i've seen the charge go down when i've had the wireless on and been playing movies etc...
Possibly because the amount of charge than can be delivered via a usb (not connected to a plug) is very small
Same here. It happened to me in Donut and also now in Eclair. But in my home PC and Laptop it charges normaly but slow. But in my office PC it gets discharged. Is there anything with the PC too?
i did a bit of a quick test myself on this yesterday.
i plugged my phone into the usb and set it to the charge phone option, then closed all apps, turned off data connection and gps and left it with the screen off for 30 mins. after this time my batter had dropped by 2%. i unplugged the phone from the laptop and left it, again with the screen, data and 3g off and in 30 mins the charge dropped by just 1%.
there must be a bug with this in the system somewhere as this is soo annoying for me. i will try and turn the phone off and charge it later [when the battery dies after less than 8 hours with normal use] and see if that works.
got to say that i am very disappointed by this :-(
right for an update. i have just connected my phone to the wall charger, left the data connection and 3g on and left it charging for 30 mins. the result was an increase in charge of 17%!!!!!! thats more like it

The USB spec provides for 500mA of current at a USB port but it could drop to the lowest spec'd voltage while doing so, which could reduce the charging rate even more. If the USB port is actually a secondary port from an internal, self-powered hub, it might even limit the current to 100mA. It all depends, many USB implementations aren't known for following the spec's terribly well.
Some newer USB ports will comply with the latest spec's that allow higher charging currents (to 900 or even 1500mA).

Slow battery charging through usb after ICS

I have read multiple posts talking about battery life problems suffered after the ICS update. However, my question is regarding the time it takes to charge the phone using a usb. I know the fact that usb charging is slower than wall charging. But what i am comparing is usb charging before and after the ICS update. My phone is not rooted and has the OTA update from motorola. Also, it is a RAZR and not RAZR MAX.
The question is, has anybody noticed that usb charging is slower after the ICS update? I used to plug in my phone with usually 50-60% battery life in the mornings and it always used to be fully charged before lunch. Now, the whole day goes by and it barely reaches 100%.
The phone, the usb cable and the computer are all the same. Only the software has changed.
My initial guess is that the 'charge only' option that used to be available before did a better job of sending more current than the options available under ICS.
Does anybody know of a way to fix it ? With or without root?
Thanks,
Kavik Bachani
I ran into your post after googling the same issue for my cousin; also started after ICS upgrade, but her phone is Xperia S, and its not only affecting USB charging, but even the wall charger is much slower now, more than 4hrs plugged for 30% charge only, when it used to take less than 2hrs for full charge before.
I've always had trouble charging my phone on a computer via USB. It goes way faster when on a wall charger.

there can be more than one issue for this.
1) could be the battery stat. but to wipe this you need to root your phone. Maybe just charge and discharge it a few times completely (till it shut's down automatically)
2) other charging source? are you using another USB-Port to charge it? it could happen, cause your phone has to 'tell' the USB port it's some kind of high power device to get 500mA and not like mouse and keyboard only 100mA. does the PC recognize the phone? are your usb ports unlocked (yeah, i know... even locked ports supports power, but maybe not enough...)?
3) do you charge it while running? or in shut down state? ICS seems to drains some more battery life while running then GB...
PS: charge only option is no more usable but ask an IT-provider to get a 'power-only' usb cable. i've got some and it only provides current, it's like normally charging
PPS: best rooting solution > get Arctic ICS (GSM/CDMA) or Epsilon (GSM) ROM, usb charging in less then 2h! for better result use the 'power-only' usb cable mentioned above
Another essencial tip is always charge through back usb, never in front and disable wifi, gps, data, bluetooth it will make phone charge more and faster.

mentioned that too, is there some explainable reason for the front / back end differences?

I agree. Wall charging is always way faster than usb charging but my wall charger usually stays at home. That is why, i use the usb charging option at work.

My phone has discharged completely twice since the ICS update. I am not sure but that might have reset the battery stat. Is there a way to check it on a non rooted device?

The phone is plugged in to a USB port on the computer and is recognized as a Motorola RAZR. I also have the Motorola Device Manager installed which i believe installs all the necessary drivers.
Also, I have tried multiple ports (front and back) and i have seen similar results in terms of the time it takes to fully charge the phone.

I do charge it while running and wifi on. Data, Bluetooth, GPS are off. I always used to charge it this way. Its sad that the same state in ICS drains more battery than GB.

I have so far avoided the root option since i am a little scared of bricking the phone / what if i am not able to restore it back to stock / unable to update phone to future software versions etc.
How does rooting the phone increases the speed of usb charging? Is the software that is being flashed on the device modified in certain ways that is not done as part of the .211 OTA update?
I have also read about the .215 leak. Do you know if the usb charging speeds are different between the two .211 and .215 versions?

For me i don't have any experiences with CDMA phones but what i read was a significant better signal state and battery life in .215 ...
Looks like they improved the system processes / memory usage to get less battery drain. This should be good for charging, because while charging it would drain less battery life / it's charged faster.

Rooting itself will not bring you any advantage in battery drain / charging times. But a rooted phone is open for kernel tweaks and custom ROMs.
Tweaks are used to improve the CPU to get more power or better battery life.
ROMs can be de-odexed / de-bloated to get rid of every senseless app or system process that drains battery while running in the background.
And this improves your battery life AND charge times
PS: There should be some stock ROM from EternityProject as emergency unbrick for CDMA too. Just use the search function, you should be able to go back to stock from every custom ROM.

[Q] Lumia 800 - can I connect it directly to a powersupply?

I have a problem with a Lumia 800 - I think it's a deep discharge problem. The battery doesn't charge, but phone does get warm while charging. When I do a soft reset it vibrates - and a few seconds later vibrates a 2nd time (I guess to signal power off). There is no display at all. When I connect to a PC it sometimes reports a HID device - for a about 2-3 Seconds - then it's again dead.
Now my question: can I take out the battery and directly connect 3.8V to the phone? I have a powersupply and multimeter at hand at hand. My options are:
1. - Connect 3.8V with a lab-powersupply to the phone and install the latest software updates
2. - Find another phone with 3.8V Lithium cell and charge the battery with that charger. (I also got a IMAX B6 LiPo/Li-ion charger used for models )
Option 2 feels more comfortable. If a voltage pins slips off while installing the software I may brick the phone.
Any comments? Or any other method to get out of the deep discharge loop?

Can you disassembly phone, remove battery from phone and charge it with external powersupply. I used this method because mine motherboard haven't connector microusb for charger battery and this method work.
My external usb charger is 5v @ 2 Ah. if you wont disassembly the phone, you can use a other powersupply with more Ah because nokia is 700-800mAh

Usb instanly drains 2% battery - Iconia A1-810

First, sorry if this is a known problem but I couln't find anything similar enough on forum search or google.
Now, I know USB only charges @ 500mA, the iconia's wall wart charges at 2A.
So problem isn't that it slowly discharges the battery when connected to usb, but rather that whenever i connect the usb to pc it shaves 2% off the battery instantly until it hits about 12%.
That means that if I connect the usb repeatedly, i'm able to go from 100 to 12% in a matter of seconds, since each time i connect it, it drops 2% and when it hits 12% the issue goes away.
Other than that, battery life seems fine to be honest.
What gives? Anyone knows anything about it?
Sorry again if this is a known issue, noob here.

[Q] Battery Wtf

So i just played with Custom ROMs to find the best for me...
But from one point my Phone f*cked up the battery detecting...
CM9 and CM9 detect the battery at 45% and then he Level instantly just drop to 0%...
I cant even restart my phone, so i guess the battery really went out...
So how can i fix, that the ROM would not detect it 45% but 3-4% ?
And let me fully chage my phone ?
Stock rom Always Detect it 100% and then randonly the phone shut down in random times (cuz it drops the level to 0%)
I've tried the "Fully-Charge, Fully-Discharge" But the ROM still detect the Battery wrong...
Even tried to delete the battery stats...
Any solution, or idea ?
I currently use CM with the built-in CM9 kernel...
I think its battery problem.use a new battery.ur prblm will be solved

How old is the battery? What charging cable are you using and what is the cable plugged into?
If the battery is more then a year old it could be 'tired' and not holding a charge correctly (trying another known good battery in your phone will determine this, as will trying your battery in another phone, and if it works well you may have more issues to deal with). If you got the phone second hand, you have no way of knowing the battery's history. Repeated overcharging is also not recommended, as well as leaving the battery in very hot places as it can damage the onboard circuitry in the battery.
Cheap aftermarket (non OEM) USB cables are not that great imo, they are generally not as well made and soon get loose connections, resulting in poor connectivity (charging with a bad cable can also damage the battery). Always use the original cable or a good quality aftermarket one, like Belkin.
Charging the phone from a USB port on a PC or laptop (and/or via a USB hub) is not as efficient as charging it directly from a wall mains USB adapter, because the power often gets interrupted. Ideally for the best charge you should turn the phone off and use a wall/mains socket USB lead, so as give a direct, constant, power supply to charge a battery. A typical full charge is done in two hours. If you charge this way and the battery still has issues buy a new one.

First of all, the Phone is manufactured in 11W41 (2011 Week #41) and the battery in 11W39 (2011 Week #39)
I use a tipical Micro USB charger which does not connect to the wall with USB but the cable directly integrated into the adapter...
And the phone's shipped official cable to charge throught my PC...
The battery worked fine before i forgot to delete battery stats and flashed a ROM...
After that, all ROM is getting fake battery data...
After using my phone i noticed:
-When the phone displays 70-80% charge, the battery actually have 10-15%
-When the battery reach 0% the phone not just jumps to 0% but the Phone shut down within a half second (as no more energy)
-When i charge it to 3-4% the phone show 80% again...
-So i can charge it to about 10 or max 15% when the OS detect 100% and does not charge it further more, which prevent me from properly re-calibrate the battery stats, cuz 10-15 will be always the max charge of the battery...
Now i'm looking for some kind of Mod / App that fake the Battery level to the OS (for example lock it to 5% and the OS continue to charge the battery) i know its dangerious cuz if i'm not aware i'll overcharge it and it will die permanently, but i have no better idea ATM...
Update: Sometimes after my phone dies from no remaining electron in the battery It displays 5% charge when i switch it on while connected to a charger (the only way i can switch it on) And starts to increase.. (5-6-7-8 etc..)
But sometimes it instantly jumps up to 70-80% if i think right when the screen switches of..
So i enabled "No-screen-off-whili-on-charger" and letit charging..
Will notice you about the result...

try reflash stock.ics ftf should fix this
Already tried, the Stock rom always showed 100% charge, and when the battery ran out, just powered off...
(Jumped from 100 to 0 instantly)
As i mentioned, in the reply you quoted, today it started charging from 0...
It went good, but somewhy, it just stopped at 26% and not a single volt went into the Battery...
As i Pulled out the Cable, the indicator jumped to 100 instantly...
Can you link several stock ROMs ?
I've tried with the 4.0.4 Android
but maybe the 2.3 can still work with it...

but i think theres some HW damage. even if not rhe battery maybe some config chip is broken or whatever on the board. normally flashing a stock.ics.ftf resloves all software issues, as its resets all stuff to factory..
