I have a white unranded Xperia S and have still not recieved the generic .73 update.... Has anyone else yet? Why is this taking so long? Its been out for over a month in singapore and nothing yet in the UK on unbranded Xperia S devices.... I used to have a HTC Desire which got timely updates.
Not impressed. It feels like all Sony have done is re brand Sony/Ericsson who used to be shocking for stuff like this.
Positive thinking, maybe they skip .73 and go for ICS.
I gave up. If you're itching to try one of the .73 FWs, just get one from the Dev section and flash it. You don't need to unlock the bootloader unless you want a prerooted one.
Sony UK really dropped the ball on this one, I think.
Sorry guys, I really dont mean to sound so negative. Its a fantastic phone and in all honesty so far its been great apart from battery life. I know the .73 firmware addresses this.
I really dont want to Root my phone etc just so I can get the firmware. I think Sony should have released it in the UK, my thinking is maybe Sony has not released it because ICS is just around the corner. If not that im not happy at all.
Look at the Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita. They update those devices fast, ok I know its not a Phone but maybe Sonys mobile devision could learn a thing or two from their games console devision.

I suppose the question he is asking is ' if the .73 update improves something as fundamental as battery life, then why oh why have Sony mobile UK refused to release it especially when it's available for branded kits. It just brings back bad memories of the X10 and we hoped all that was history now.
I personally believe the phone should never have been released with gingerbread. I just cannot understand the reasoning behind this move and I'm sorry Sony are just add guilty as Ericsson for this. Rebranding or not.
A phone that could have really taken off once again has been given a handicap by very poor executive decision making. Again a throw back to the x10 days. If ICS wasn't ready by the proposed launch date then they should have delayed the launch rather than releasing the phone with software that the community doesn't care about anymore.
It just shows that the company, Sony included, just haven't got it that android sells these phone and not the stuff they do no matter how good that might be.
A shame because the phone despite its cheaper price is in my opinion currently the best thing on the market.
The big retailers like amazon and play have just refused Sony's recommended retail price of £460 because of the poor poor performance of the phones released last year. Who can blame them. The xperia s will just have to clean up the sales mess left behind by the arc, play, and all the other ridiculous devices they flooded the market with last year.
It beggars belief that Sony should find themselves in any way shape or form competing with HTC, Samsung, and the other Korean and Chinese manufacturers.
On a hardware level despite its older CPU, the xperia is much quicker than all others which proves the point that when it comes to electronics, made in Japan is better than made in Korea, Taiwan, and China. No offence to the rest but the Taiwanese and Chinese are still very much up and coming.
What they do however is understand the android community much better than Sony.
Sony seem to think we are like apple consumers which couldn't be further from the truth. There in lies their problem.

Hi K900, thanks for the reply but I would rather use official update channels which for some reason have not happened in the UK. A bit of a silly move considering the Xperia S is selling bucket loads in the UK at the moment.

Yes I agree it seems very illogical. I came from a HTC Desire which had some really fast updates and Sony to me seems highly odd, considering the .73 firmware fixes battery issues.
The phone has taken of by the way, its selling very well across the world but Sony could help by releasing firmware that its possibly very important to everyone.
As for the processor and the Phone it was all designed in europe including the processors and stuff. All sony did was remove the ericsson moniker and make then use better hardware.
ICS is apparently out as early as a week away, if your phone is locked down to a network it maybe longer due to bloatware. This may not happen but reading stuff on here and twitter its looking very likely. Android versions arnt what sells a phone the most to consumers, its the screen, the design of the Phone, the camera and yea im sure the Android version helps but its not a huge thing. I really hope this is just a bedding in period with Ericsson now being trained how to make Sony phones properly.
I think its a fantastic phone and with the correct leadership from Sony could be bigger yet (sales).

I've flashed a .73 firmware version and I have to say that I'm not really noticing a major difference in battery life. Granted, yes it's better but by like an hour or something silly like that...personally if I were you I'd just wait it out a couple more months...

Pretty poor on Sony's part to leave a simple firmware update hanging in a region.

I think it's more down to the user than anything...personally as someone who isnt a frequent user of their phone (mainly due to the fact that I use a tab), I find it quite disappointing how quick the battery drains...even in standby mode.

Somehow I doubt that ICS is around the corner. Android version matters more than anything else. If Sony left the s at gingerbread, the phone would bomb.
The phone is doing well as far as sales goes but that's because the HTC devices have been disappointing. Once the galaxy s3 is launched. All that would change as things stand. Sony need to make sure ICS is ready before the s3 launch

Hi, hope you don't mind me asking. I've just upgraded my old X10 Mini Pro and should be receiving the Xperia S in a couple of days. I've been looking at .73 threads in the Dev section and they tend to imply an unlocked bootloader. e.g http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571396
Needless to say I'm somewhat confused! Can I flash the above with a locked bootloader?

You can flash an original official FW, so replace stock UK with stock SG(Singapore) for example. But this wont get you root, unfortunately.

Yeah, I think I'd have to flash something like DoomKernel to get root? I'm still struggling with the learning curve with the Xperia S and still can't see the wood for the trees!
At this point the first thing I'm aiming to do is improve battery life, which .73 seems to do for many people.
Just had an email from Sony UK saying the .73 firmware will be out sometime this week. Makes me think ICS will be a long wait if it takes so long to release a simple firmware update.

To be honest I think it's what they deserve.
From a marketing point of view, they are ****ed.
I too would love to see this happen
They ****ed us on the X1 and blamed HTC. Made big promises for the X2, we got ****ed even harder then. Now the X10!
Well at least my X10 is functional, not like the X2 I had before this. That was a pile of crap, a beautiful pile of crap... but still crap!
Yeah, hopefully someone cracks the bootloader soon!
This is my first SE phone (X10) since the old SE phones.. My question is.. Why do people like to continue getting EFF'd by Sony from X1 to X2 to X10?!??!
I learned my lesson after the X10.. Last time I ever give in to the brand, without doing my research first.
Sony Ericsson is playing there cards wrong. And, as a result? Lost MANY Potential and "loyal" customers from before.
Good thing i'm not on a contract with this phone!!
I would rather wait for the bootloader to be cracked by the devs anyway, they can take the updates and get better drivers other than that I think we would probably have to wait till october 2011 for froyo alone by SE. But by then I would of sold my phone for scrap metal and got an HTC ^^

Same goes for me, i would wait for the devs, what they do in there spare time for us is beyond anything that the SE devs can do in bringing us the best/newest firmware for the X10. Oh and as for 2011 for froyo that wont happen, i forgot where i read it but SE has said somewhere that 2.1 is the last firmware for the X10 series phones. If however we are able to get froyo as an update, SE would most likely cripple it again like they are doing to eclair as we speak and take out all the new features that comes with the update and only give us the number that shows up before the firmware version.

There's no certainty that we will ever get a cracked bootloader, from SE's perspective; they don't have to stop the bootloader getting cracked forever, just 6~12 months by which time the phone will superseded by newer models and people will loose interest in cracking it as they move on to newer phones. If you look at the dev thread signatures you will see that a lot of them have already got newer devices. What do you think are the chances of them getting another X10 if one gets bricked? Natural attrition will eat away at our dev community unless a hack is found SOON and a homebrew scene springs up around the X10. It's not like X10 is an Apple product and cracking it will get you media attention / notoriety.
I'm sticking with my X10 for now, but I'm not optimistic.

If it has Timescape and locked bootloader definitely not. If it has vanilla android and locked bootloader maybe. If it has unlocked bootloader then absof#@$nglutely.
I want to get this!!!
they should get rid of the physical buttons (menu, back, home, and ect...)
why not give the ram up to 1gb? battery waste?

I don't think that design is something which SE did .. i must be a concept of how the phone will be (done by who knows??) since u cane see that the home icon, menu icon are just not "SE".....
Moreover if they release at the same time as the did with x10, it mat not be a problem as long as it runs in gingerbread. BUT if they release it by the Q3(end of Q3 as SE keeps everything to the end) then it might flop!!
Moreover wait for 2 months after the release, so u can read all the complaints of the phone pasted on every blog related to smartphones!!
AFTER ALL, this is the age of technology, in every two months something pops up one better than the other!! if we have the money we can for it all !!! Otherwise be satisfied with we have!!!
even though its too early to comment ...
but that device will come with ginger bread installed ? when we paid a lot to get thier flagship only to depend upon them to give a meager 2.1
thats ridiculous
anyway i will never buy it.. more over i cant spend soo much , i am happy with PS3 right now.. and any gaming on the move ? i have my x10 with angry bird \m/ Peace
That's a prototype, even the hard keys are not "SE" final product should look better ,knowing SE. With all the flack they are getting in their product blog they cant even afford not to give the X10 2.2 after 2.1,they simply cant, what im guessing is that the PSP Phone and X10 will coexsist, X10 will get 2.2 and then the PSP Phone will come in rocking Gingerbread to bring some differentiation.
No more SE ****.... Never!

This is my first SE smartphone so take this as you will but i've never come across anything quite like it with another company. Is the criticism justified?
Customers seem to be leaving them in droves cause they won't give any indication of whether they will update their flagship phone to 2.2. I'd be pretty upset too!
I've just read that a sony spokesman did say the X10 would include MT but now they're saying it never will. I also saw the ad that SE originally put out saying it had mulitouch that was later withdrawn.
With the 2.1 update debacle it seems like they're either really inept or generally lying and misleading customers. Is the delay really worth it for the custom SE 2.1 OS when you could have an Android phone running 2.2?
Last thing i want to do is get locked into a 2 year contract with a phone that is poorly supported so i need to ask these questions.
Cheers.
There's nothing great about SE, just complete lousiness.

Completely agree with you, This is the first and last SE phone I buy.
SE's software department is probably the worst from any Android vendor out there.
Anyway, I doubt their Android phone department is "healthy". The latest flagship was launched a year ago, software updating was disastrous and there's no roadmap at all for new Xperia phones.
If the X10 Mini's form factor is the compelling reason, I'd take a look at the Motorola Flipout. The hardware is a lot better (Cortex A8 + PowerVR SGX530) and it's being updated to Froyo during this month.
Hey guys, my girlfriend is planning on buying a new phone, so I've been doing some research for her and looked at Xperia J, P and Sola. It seems many people have problems related to the wifi, battery and touchscreen (mostly wifi though). It seems they all agree that after updating to ICS, the problems occur. Otherwise, it's fine on GB.
My question is, are these problems fixed in the latest stock rom or in any of the custom roms? If not, I should probably stay away from it because my girlfriend isn't tech savy like I am, so she wouldn't know what to do or even want to bother with flashing kernels or mods or fixes etc.
You could say that she could just get something easy to use, like an iPhone or something, but that's expensive and out of the question.
Anyway I would appreciate if you guys could share your problems and feedback, thanks.
I would say none of these phones, she would be unhappy with all I think lol, get a HTC or Samsung

Never had a Sony phone before so just curious to see if it's easy to root, install a custom recovery and custom roms.
How does this work on Sony phones?
Do they have better development than say Samsung or HTC?
Samsung has a lot but with all the Knox stuff you lose your warranty. Does Sony also cancel the warranty if the phone is rooted? Or do Sony phones have a way to go back to completely stock so Sony can't find out if it has been rooted?
I would like to install CM in time. Does CM support Sony devices after 2 years?
Thanks!
From what I've read so far (new to Sony too) the well be root & custom ROMs but won't be as well supported by devs. Just compare the Samsung and HTC forums with the Sony ones.

I answered some questions in the general section but I'll do my best here too.
Rooting and installing IS easy, just different from Samsung or HTC. You use a flashtool which is similar to Odin and after installing a recovery you flash using the recovery menu.
Regarding warranty, almost all manufacturers void warranty if they can see you were rooted and Sony is no different. You can return to stock but the bootloader will say relocked so it's up to where you take your phone for repair whether they'll do it under warranty or not. Some probably won't care/notice but unlocking the bootloader does void warranty according to Sony.
The Z1 has less development than Samsung or HTC because
a) Sony's phones don't sell as well as the mentioned manufacturers
b) The camera didn't work AT ALL with unlocked bootloaders for the first few months until Sony fixed the issue in an update. So Z1 development started really late and is still gaining momentum.
c) The 6 month flagship cycle means that people who might consider getting a Z1 around this time will wait for the Z2 so again, the population of Sony flagship buyers doesn't grow for very long.
Cyanogenmod will probably have support after 2 years but that really depends whether the Z2 gets dedicated maintainers for long enough.
I hope this helps some more

Seeing a lot of this, this year. I think its a good thing, and myself, is new to sony. Only reason being, its easily the best phone out so far. With the increase kn sales comes the hopefull increase in dev support, so we may see more and more roms and features being created for us.

Yep I'm new to Sony too. This will be my first and I've owned the usual apple/htc/samsung/nokia handsets in the past.
For me the Z2 looks like the first handset that satisfies what I've really been looking for ever since the first iPhone came out - a simple minimalist slate with no front buttons (or capacitive) and a screen that is CENTRED. The nexus 5 came close to this but ruined it with a sub-par camera and that ridiculous 'chin' to the bottom of the phone. For some reason having a screen that is off-centre drives me up the wall.
Would have got the z1 were it not for the dodgy screen reviews but now this has been fixed I'm all for go.
Can't wait to root so i can install gmd autohide to remove the software buttons when i need. Then it will be perfect. Hoping this is the start of sony dominating!
I hope Sony will dominate once more. We need someone to bring Samsung down from their plastic pedestal and Sony dominated the dumb phone market back in the day.
I have never been this pumped for any smartphone in my life. I want this phone so badly it hurts lol

The Sony devices are plastic also. Just more stylish looking plastic. Don't forget that.
Root has been achieved by @DooMLoRD.
He has recovery as well.
Check the general section. (Not sure why it is there)

Dude, it is for the Xperia T2, not Z2! Read better next time!
Somehow the thread is in the wrong forum...
There is NO root for Z2 or Tablet Z2 ATM.

Any other root exploit available without unlocking the bootloader first? Previous xperias always managed to have i think. Coz I'll probably stay on locked bootloader for a couple of weeks while observing if my set has no defects or anything. That way, I can still request for warranty if ever there may be something faulty on my handset. And if there's nothing, by then I'll start to unlock the bootloader.
