[Q] To Root or not to Root? that is the question? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Ok can you lot give me a few good reasons to root my transformer prime and install a new ROM. I've been looking at some of the ROMs and they all look kinda.... **** lol no offence. they just look to much like the prime unrooted but with a few changed to colour really :/
i rooted my SGS2 and installed the muiu ROM i think its called and thats great i llove it. it looks different and that's what i want
someone prove me wrong please

Do you want full control over your device? The ability to get rid of the asus crapware and run your own things? I too rooted my SGS2 after about a week of owning it and haven't regretted it.
With root you can install adblockers, backup tools (proper ones), overclocking
If you're technically minded and want to get the most out of your money then root, if you don't want to risk damaging your Aluminium piece of sexy then don't.

Rooting is definitely the way to go, doesnt affect your ability to get ota's and what not, if you want to unlock i say wait a lil bit longer to find out when or if ASUS is going to release nvflash to us, granted it definitely looks promising giving Gary Key's latest update.
That said if you want to unlock you can still get AOKP from jermaine just not from here, whether he is still supporting the rom is an entirely different question

hmmmmm ok i dont know i suppose i could just get root access and keep it as stock then. im going to have to find out how to root this now sigh lol research.. i'll look it in about 3 hours lol

I would highly suggest you root it since if any things happen you can just factory default the tablet and it'll be unrooted
So there's really nothing to loss rooting it
Just make sure after you root your device you backup the root so you don't loss it after you update the prime

lol you lost me after backing up my root. =/
i just tried to use sparkyroot but it doesnt seem to be working. im going to look at other methods.
dont think i can root it can i im currently on 9.4.2.21

Check the general thread, there is a way to downgrade and then root it without unlocking.

[Q] Should we apply the OTA?

Does anyone know what the OTA does/changes? I would hate to apply it for no significant reason and cost myself a chance at root in the future.
Not until Leo, tmartin, toast, or haus says so. They are working on root

You and anybody else saying that is just as useful as me saying if you take the OTA, you wont have to wait.
At this point everything looks like its just pure speculation, nobody knows for sure.
When would you ever apply an OTA~ I don't recall a situation where it was a good idea LOL
Can't watch the Green Hornet until I update the software. No thanks.
I didn't update mine yet and it played green hornet just fine. It's a shame they didn't put a better movie on here it actually looks pretty darn good. It's the most impressive 3d content I've seen so far on the 3vo

Where did you get your phone, Best Buy?
I applied the update and now my phone shortcut is missing from the lockscreen and the app drawer. I searched online and apparently it's a common issue and HTC is working on yet another update to fix it. Apparently the first OTA update allowed you to connect to the phone via ADB.... so it looks as if they MAY be in the process of unlocking the bootloader for us.
Either way, there are a few small bugs to work out.
I wouldnt apply the OTA.. i know that its not confirmed it will do anything to affect root. However my understanding is the devs working on root didnt do it and im not going to either. Id like my phone to be as similar to the ones they are working on as possible just in case it matters.
On top of that i dont see any problems from not installing the OTA.
Too funny. You guys say you don't trust the OTA but you trust the software that came on the phone to begin with? Anyhow, HTC put out an update for a reason- it fixes things that are broken. If you want a partially functioning and buggy device, do not apply the update. If we had root I could see why people would be so concerned about losing it. However, we do not have root and who knows when we will. So, if until then you want a phone that works properly, apply the update which probably isn't going to change a whole lot in regards to your ability to root.
So if I did apply the update I'm f'ed??

The OTA has screwed up my phone. It is stuck in a boot loop; I was able to go to the bootloader but the factory reset did not fix it. I am headed to the store to swap out my brand new phone.

Nope. Its all speculation at this point.
mine worked fine did you give it some time?
I'd hold off on updating for the simple reason HTC is trying to fix their last OTA lol
My phone arrives Monday but I'll wait unless theres a bug that is really bothering me, otherwise I can hold off. If you want to update for the sake of updating then don't whine if it prevents you from rooting later.

well, you can be sure that in closed future you'll be able to unlock your bootloader but till that promotion you can simply root your device, install rom manager, flash clockworkmod recovery.

What are roms?

I tired searching for this answer via search bar, but no avail
So I am a recent switcher; been using all iPhones up from the 3G and I made the plunge into buying the Galaxy S III and I %100 love it.
But there is many things I do not understand. First what is flashing the rom and the point of doing so
Roms are custom OS's. since android is an open source platform , devs are able to take the OS and put in their own bells and whistles to make it better. Or to delete the treasure Trove of bloatware put in by manufactures own custom OS's like htc's sense or our own touchwiz

I'm a new user like you! Came from a Blackberry and I'm just starting to realize the amount of things you can do on Android. Quite amazing really.
I'm no expert, but the idea I get is that custom ROMs are custom OS that give you features and options above and beyond what the stock S3 ROM offers. There are many developers working on their own ROMs, you can check out the developer section for that. :3 But before you even flash a custom ROM you'll have to root your phone.

Most ROMs have the option to remove bloatware I think. Even if they do not, once you have rooted your phone and installed Titanium Backup from the Playstore you should be able to remove any unwanted apps.
Omega ROM is a good ROM that keeps the touchwiz interface. It's one of the ROMs that is closest to stock interface. Try googling for that.

If you're a noob don't do anything to your phone, there is a good chance you will brick it.
Just read forums watch some YouTube videos about flashing roms and what not.
Only then once you know the terminology, consequences of a screw up and general feel for things should you attempt to mess with your phone.
There is nothing wrong with stock, if you coming from Iphone first learn your Android inside out.
Don't be one of those asking if they need root, If you don't know what root is or what it does, you don't need it.
Rant over.

Ghost77 said it best!!
If your a noob, don't try to do something to your phone, if you do not know what you are doing!!
With that said, Samsung phones (except Verizon S3) are the easiest phones to root and flash roms!! Do your homework and do major research before you attempt to do anything. Look at youtube videos and carefully pay attention to what they are doing.
Also because you have a S3, make sure you follow and download the right files and roms for your particular phone. For example, use i9300 roms only for international s3, i710 roms for sprint and so on. If you don't know your model number go to settings - about device - model number.
Finally, like ghost77 said, stock is not bad! Rooting and flashing roms is for those people who want that little more customization and performance improvements. For the average user, they probably won't even notice a difference between a rooted phone with a custom factory rom and a unrooted factory device.
Well I already rooted, I installed setcpu what would be a good speed to optimize battery life but keep good performance overall

Everyone thinks that rooting your phone will void your warranty but if you watch this it states that under the "Magnuson Moss Warranty Act" Title 50 Chap 50 Section 2304 C) Waiver of Standards, it basically states that they have to prove that you did something to damage your device to void your warranty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YcIHaajda8&feature=g-user-u

The DNA is an awesome phone; however, if your phone comes with the newest update from HTC on it, be aware, there is currently software-based (free) method to unlock bootloader or modify the phone at all. Users with updated phones that were not previously unlocked have had to resort to JTAG service (something like $45 plus shipping) to have the phone S-OFF'ed (Radio S-OFF - Means you can flash whatever you please (even more so with the engineering bootloader flashed)).
If the phone prompts you for an update, DON'T DO IT! If the phone is already updated, you either wait and hope for someone to find a vulnerability, pay for JTAG service, or use the phone stock (still a good phone, but no root).
Good luck!

Root/Bootloader status:
firmware 1.x - fully blown open
firmware 2.x - locked tighter that a dolphin's butthole.
It will probably come with the 2.x software. I would recommend using the JTAG service provided here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-droid-dna-dlx-jtag-s-off-modification-service/
Difference between a nexus and the dna... A world.
The gnex was made to open from the beginning. Running one fastboot command opened the entire floodgate, plus odin is an awesome tool for samsung devices. HTC devices have more parts that need to be cracked to have the same openess as the nexus. Right now 2.x firmware means you are running stock only (no root or anything). I'm coming from the gnex and was willing to pay for the jtag service because although I love the dev's work on this phone, I don't want to rely on them for everything.
Hope this helps.
Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

haha no comments on the women stuff i think you understand why hahaha
Like other post, i would say know that you will not have root for a bit and cm 10.1 is not done yet...but will be soon. You can go for JTAG or stick with stock or use nova launcher temporarily. The battery life is pretty decent but nothing crazy 4 hours of screen time-ish on stock. i usually get enough battery for 1 day and a few hours. Oh, fastboot will prevent a full restart of your phone so might want to disable that...and yea just look around settings. there are ways to increase battery and stuff. for example, there is a settings in wifi that allows it to auto turn off and use data unless you start using your phone. I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

Same here. I love CM and AOSP/AOKP, but I tire of them pretty quick. I honestly don't understand the HTC Sense hate some people have. If it was that bad then everyone wouldn't be trying to find widgets that looked like the sense widgets on CM/AOSP. Sense is a really nice looking UI and their widgets are second to none.
I'm pretty much decided on sending out my DNA to be JTAG'd. How long can I expect to be without a phone? I think i'll be stuck using my rezound with just google voice.
