ICS Screen flickering bug. - Sony Tablet S

Hi,
After ICS update I noticed a very annoing and frequent bug.
It was described by other users in these subforums, and factory reset can not help it.
It is difficult to describe, as it lasts for maybe one tenth of a second and I can't find a proper word for this as I'm not a native English speaker.
But I recorded a video, so you can see this.
It's like a single flickerring in a shape of triangle in left bottom part of the active window or entire screen - a short white blink.
In the video I show it happening when pressing Menu for Recent Tasks, but it happens in other occasions too.
When playing video there are also some 1/10 second distortions - difficult to describe, but I suspect they have something in common with this bug...
Let's hope Sony will see this and fix this bug.
I really wonder how such a bug could have left after the development stage. I, as a regular user, have noticed this after a couple of hours of playing with the tablet. What about Sony testers?

It's annoying!! its happening to me also, mines are black, and they happen in the left side of the tablet screen. :/

Not seeing flickering on mine yet.

Im just here because i am looking for a system dump to port things but it is a common issue on the Asus Transformer on ICS as well It is not a device specific bug but rather one in google's code. One fix is to only have <5 apps running at a time

Mine does not show this flickering .
Also....this is a development section of the forum . Your question should have been posted in the Tablet S General section

This is happening to a lot of us. It has already been discussed in the General section under the ICS First Impressions topic.

Yes I have the flickering, and it happens a lot using recent apps on the homescreen.

This is very useful info. Thank you!!!!

I had it a little yesterday but it's gone today

Got it too but its not that annoying,
It does not happen all the time its just an google thing,
It will not damage anything but if you think its to annoying then you could try
to use a CPU speed up "Dont apply EXTREME" that will higher the chance to
crash your device, i think the tegra chip is getting to much info to read,
so its a sort of buffer overrun maby speed up app will lower the flickering

You can't over clock the kernel.. We don't have a kernel which supports that yet

I have flickering too. It's probably due to low ram at certain points. Even with the flickering on occasion, the recent apps list is MUCH faster than on Honeycomb.

the flickering only happens on my tablet when it's in the cradle on clock mode and it stops completely if I use a regular wallpaper instead of a live wallpaper

To me flickering happens when I open recent apps on the launcher or when I ve a popup (inside the application, on internet etc.) with a dark trasparent effect under. The same graphical problem turn up heavily with the youtube application or sometime using keyboard.
It's very very annoying this problem. It doesn't limit the use of the tablet, which is very fast and smooth, but simply ruins something which, simply, would be perfect without it.
It will be interesting create a class action, a mail, with the signature of who wants a resolution of this problem, to send to Sony for forcing it to realize a solution.

Let me retract my previous statement. Since I've rooted ICS and have been using it more and I do see screen flickering occasionally.
I can't say that I see any performance improvement with ICS though.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/26/lg-optimus-4x-hands-on/
25 seconds into the video, you can see it happen on the new LG optimus 4X, i think it may be something to do with ICS.

If you people bothered to read the entire thread you would see that it has happened to other tablets. Not only the Sony. ASUS has this problem as well.
Read the thread and you will see

Yup ISC bug, first i didn't give a shhh.. but now its getting pretty annoying i hope it will be better with 4.0.4. Wich runs super smooth on my Samsung Galaxy S2 in tablet mode.

yes, have the same problem! It's annoying!

Reboot-bad battery issues for some-suspect bad update/app to be the cause

Hello guys
Being a long time member, and having rooted many of my devices before (Xoom, HTC Sensation etc) I have seen complaints like people are posting where some here are experiencing no battery/rebooting issues(like me) while others are experiencing the opposite. The first thing that any experienced developer here on XDA would tell you is that something went wrong when updating to the new .13 update, which is why some are experiencing problems, while others are not. It does not make sense that a good majority of us, have no issues...if the new .13 update was bad/faulty, then it would affect all of us, not just some. I would highly recommend that people with issues reformat/start from scratch, as this has helped others with similar issues. If this does not help, then unfortunately you just experience a bad update, which of course the only fix would be is to try to reinstall the update (easy to do if rooted) or wait for a new update from Asus.
Also, if your battery is dying quickly, check to see if it is warm to the touch even if you are not using it. If so, then this would definitely point to an app trying to do something in the background without your knowledge..maybe there is an app trying to sync but your wifi is off, or an app that you installed that does not play nice with ICS. I would suggest that those with problems can list their installed apps, and those without issues can see if they have any of the apps on their devices...this can help narrow the issue down and hopefully find the culprit.
Thanx

All fair points, but many people suspect that there are at least two batches of Primes floating around with different hardware. After all, even before this update, there were groups of people that had freezes and reboots and others who had none.
Another telling point is that as far as I can tell, .13 update completely fixed Primes that were previously having sleep of death and reboot problems, and caused sleep of death, reboot and battery problems only on Primes that were previously working fine. This also suggests two different hardware sets to me (e.g., they tested the .13 update only/mostly on the set of Primes that had previous problems).
the bad update/ flash/ application as a culprit to all the Primes problems went out the window long ago this is all horse**** the problem is with the tegra3 in some way and different hardware variances in X Prime vs B Prime vs Z Prime etc....etc...etc...

But that doesn't make sense either, because I had no rebooting issues before and no battery issues after updating to .13.
What we need here is hard data evidence from something such as a battery/hardware/resource monitor, which I have not seen from anyone with battery issues.
I don't have the issue so there is really nothing for me to monitor and gather data from.
Just had this issue pop up. Was using my Prime this morning on the charger, closed the screen (have the dock) pulled the plug put it in my bag for the day. Went to class, and then to work pulled it out at 6pm to check out a new note taking app and found my Prime to be HOT, like I left in in the car on a sunny day hot. Opened it up and it wouldn't come to life, held the on/off till it "shut off" then powered it back on. Battery life is 80% prime 14% dock. As requested my apps are as follows.

If your TFP is hot it could be an indication that the processor is running something and causing heat.
Try an app like SystemPanel to monitor resource usage. You may have to get the paid version in order to track app resource usage history
https://market.android.com/details?id=nextapp.systempanel
Here is another good website to find other apps to monitor usage and find out what exactly is using your battery.

Have people experiencing the issues gotten the OTA or did they do the update via file where you system partition is formatted? Wonder if some file(s) didn't get updated properly via OTA but work fine via .zip update.

That's actually a pretty good question! Along with posting a list of apps...thinking a widget is trying to sync constantly?? Also, have you guys checked your app intervals...too many apps syncing at a low interval will kill your battery
I couldn't do the OTA, so I had to do the wipe and full install from .zip

Although I didn't suffer from issues here ln battery, after hearing about it, I went in and changed all intervals and cut off anything unnecessary. I especially made sure to raise email interval. As that's the thing that goes off the most. When it does it also causes the audio to go off constantly. So far I've been getting even better battery life than before in deep sleep. Actually very impressed how lil energy is used while in deep sleep. Before o took my screenshot and used tablet, it was in deep sleep for over 7-8hrs. And didn't budge from 100%. That's pretty impressive.

Yes! My wifi signal strength matches my Moto Xoom, I haven't had one reboot..GPS is weak but I honestly didn't buy the tab for that (Ipad users don't have it, but who cares its not a navigation device) . My 1080p movie playback is flawless, colors are rich. This is truly a sexy, powerful beast of a tablet! I'm sure that we all can agree on that...I'm sure that Asus will work out the kinks that some are having soon.
Everywhere I go, even Ipad owners love the way this Tablet looks, especially the screen display

Yeah, I'm wondering if people have their update intervals low an the system is constantly trying to update apps in the background?? This would explain the warm/hot backs of the Primes by the batteries for some
The battery, sleep of death and random reboot IT IS CAUSE BY THE NEW OTA .13
i have factory restore 3 times no app install, same problem
i have push the OTA .13 MANUALLY TWICE same problem without installing app.
there's no way to get around this, only a new firmware fix or backflash to .11 only solution for us having problem with this new .13

Why are any users experiencing the range of issues this tablet is presenting while others are not? We have 3-5 major bugs that are sporadically scattered across a wide range of serial numbers. I believe its downright obvious that TFPs have a variation in hardware quality and/or quality control issues. It's fracking embarrassing. To say that only some people are having this battery issue just continues to follow the trend that has been ASUS the past 3 months.

Im guessing the reason for most of these problems is going from HC to ICS without a full wipe.
I have flashed thousands of roms on my devices since Windows Mobile 6.1 and when portion of people have issues they are told to check md5 sums and full wipe.
A little from column a and a little from column b perhaps.

Xperia S behaving strangely

Hi Guys,
My XS has been behaving strangely the past couple of weeks and I was wondering whether anyone had an idea as to why it might be.
I'm running STOCK Three UK .75 firmware, no root, no boot unlock.
1. When waking the screen up by pressing the power button I noticed that rather than my standard lock screen, I had the old X10 lock screen load up instead. I probably wouldn't have noticed had the clock not been so different to the Xperia S stock clock... but it shocked me since these were OLD software UI elements that must be on my XS somewhere, and something caused them to render rather than the current UI.
2. When swiping to a different home screen I've noticed the screen black out temporarily before continuing with the animation and loading the next home screen. I'm not a widget intensive user... I've got clock and google search on one screen, "tool" toggles and track ID on another, and accuweather on the third.
3. Facebook images flickering and sometimes staying greyed out. Wifi connection is strong so it's not a connectivity issue... it seems to be a graphical issue, as with the rest of the problems. Facebook news feed sometimes stays completely black, though the UI elements are rendered at the top perfectly.
4. General increased lag across the UI as a whole.
Rebooting hasn't helped... removing a number of apps I thought might be causing issues hasn't helped. Any idea what has happened to my XS all of a sudden?! Seems to me like whatever is rendering graphics is having a problem.
Is it likely to be firmware related or a problem with the graphics chip? Maybe a bad app? The official Three UK ICS is available to me if that might solve the problem?
Cheers.
Try a factory reset before upgrading.
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
Factory reset hasn't affected the symptoms at all. I'm wondering whether my gpu is struggling? Is there any way to test its performance?
All you can do is flash another firmware or update to ics,if the symptoms still there than you have to send it to service.
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
I have also encounter the few problem as you have mentioned on .75 (generic uk)
But after upgarding to ics it has completely gone. Try upgrading it to ics, I'm sure that 3 have already rolled out ICS.

The first one is a common problem experienced in GB fw. Sony fixed it when they upgrade the fw to ICS.

maybe try running a benchmark app like antutu benchmark and see how your device compares to other using stock rom etc
Thanks guys.
I ran an Antutu Benchmark check and it came out at the same levels to other stock users so I guess there's nothing majorly wrong.
I'll flash ICS and be done with it I think.
Cheers again.

[Q] S3 unlock lag

Hi guys, I'm running the latest version of Slim Bean with stock modem XXLE8 and whatever kernel comes with Slim. I've noticed that there is a 1.5-2 second delay upon hitting the power or home button to the screen turning on and being ready to use. It's pretty annoying as you can imagine, I've actually figured out what the problem is, my phone is going to deep sleep too early and is taking up to 2 seconds to wake up, I wouldn't mind this if the phone has been left alone for 2 hours or so, but if I leave my phone for 5 minutes I shouldn't have to wait 2 seconds to unlock it. I came to this conclusion by using the app softlocker from the market, which disables sleep, and the lockscreen is perfectly fine with no lag, so should I try a new modem or a new kernel or is there something else I have to try to solve this issue?
There are already some discussions about that problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687328
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1636680
It is a very annoying problem and I don't really understand how a top range device like the Galaxy S3 has such a problem.
I was hopping that the official Jelly Bean update would fix it... If it does not, I will contact Samsung (as should everyone who is annoyed by the wake up lag).

I've read both but neither seem to provide much of a solution. It is pretty ridiculous a phone like the S3 with such powerful hardware suffers from unlock lag. My HTC Desire Z used to unlock instantly... Kinda disappointing.

isn't there a kernel or something where this doesnt happen??

Hmmmmm I might flash a stock rom and check it out because I don't remember it happening when I was running stock, tho that was for a grand total of 3 days lol.
This has always been a particular issue surrounding the Android software in terms of the optimisation of the OS...Keep in mind that kernels and ROMs with plently of adjustment may also mean plenty of variables, as small settings adjustments may alter and cause detrimental lags and issues as such. I use Phenomenal which is pretty good as there is little adjustments, disabled logs and undervolted...very good battery and response...I would recommend looking at something like that...unfortunately, should you wish not to root your device and keep it as standard, you may look at if there is an app that might be causing your the issue...but please note that slow unlocking/wake is because the device is in deep sleep.

theres a app called softlocker, but with that the cpu never gets to deepsleep, my s3 gets warm and the battery drains badly

Xperia tablet S shuts down watching HD movie

I have experienced the tablet shutting down when I am watching a HD video on Youtube or locally from the device. It does not always happen but what is consistent is it always happens when the video begins to drop pixels. For whatever reason If the video begins to degrade, the application locks up and the tablet shuts down. Anyone else experiencing this issue and have a fix?
Happens to me only when I'm watching videos on youtube, when I plug my tablet into the tv using the HDMI adaptor, and overnight when I wake up and its turned off. Other than that I don't get any shutdowns from general use at school, on pretty much all day taking notes browsing the web and movies/music.

I wonder when we'll see the JB update! No leaks or any news on that. So much for Sony claiming it will be out shortly after launch. Oh well.
Also waiting patiently on the JB update. Hopefully it ll clear up the worst bugs, and maybe even improve optimization. So far, I get 6 hours of normal web browsing on lowest brightness possible. Seems quite a bit far from what they promise, and also what many reviewers claim. Allthough very mixed opinions on the battery life. Also it takes more than 9 hours to recharge from zero. Sony says 5.. :/ anyone else experience these lack of power management? Think i might go to the shop for a new one, if they agree, that the battery is somehow faulty..

Well guys this is my swan song. After the last couple of shutdown events, I have reluctantly decided to part with my Xperia Tablet S. I have recently received the Nexus 7 and it has been pretty stable. I hope Sony works out the kinks. Good luck to you all.
Happened to me once, maybe twice, but never watching an HD video on youtube. What bothers me most is the underwhelming web browsing. It should be stellar.
SO any ETA on JB maybe skip it and directly go to KLP 4.2??
guess no announcement made yet

Meanwhile, some blogs also got aware of this annoying shutdown bug:
mobilegeeks.de/schwerer-software-bug-sony-xperia-tablet-s-fahrt-selbststandig-runter
flat.de/news/tablets/2442-sony-xperia-tablet-s-leidet-unter-willkuerliche-shutdowns.html
I also contacted Sony about this, but no clear info from their side. That's pathetic. It's a severe bug which makes the tablet in parts unusuable. For me, it happens not only when playing videos, but also when listening to web radio, using camera, browser or mail.
Has anyone some update on this or Jelly Bean. If this issue is not fixed soon, Sony will have seen the last money from me...
Your not alone it happends most often in browser but can even happen during offline playback.
I think sony has set the energy saving to tight causing tablet to constantly switch energy states constantly playing video's causing corruption when skiping thru video a lot.
Just try play video and keep skipping and reload other video's asswell i can force it to crash sometimes.

I think it's a more general issue, not only related to video playback as my device also shuts down when starting apps like mail or web radio. Maybe power saving / voltage switching of the SOC might be the reason, nevertheless, they should fix this the sooner the better...

Heck idle voltage might just be to low.

Xperia Tablet S - 4.1.1- Observations

Hi folks,
Thought it would be best to start a new thread instead of clutter the release thread.
What do we make of the JellyBean upgrade for the Xperia Tablet S?
So far;
- Not received any random shuts downs, the device used to turn off over night.
- Screen flickering 'seems' to have been eradicated.
- Battery life has improved considerably when compared to a days usage on ICS yesterday.
- UI is indeed buttery smooth - no lag experience yet.
- Device wakes up instantly when the power button is pushed. Used to take a few seconds on ICS.
- Camera quality seems better for me. Images aren't blurred.
- Rendering issue with the default browser seems to have been fixed.
The tablet now seems to well rounded off. Perhaps if this was released earlier, they'd made a few more sales.
Overall, I'm pretty satisfied.
Things ive observed:
Positive:
- No shutdowns.
- No issues with video playback.
- Rendering in browser is indeed better.
- Battery life is better, 4.0.3 is known for battery ineffectiveness.
- Less overall delays, better transitions.
- Havent noticed screen flickering for now.
Negative:
- Wifi problem still persists, wifi still gets disconnected if the display is switched off. It then gets reconnected again, but its still annoying.
- Wifi still cant be turned on when you click on the settings bar in bottom right, instead of that, you need to enter in the settings menu first.
- Homescreen is still uncustomisable (you cant add or remove home screens)
- Overall, i cant see why it took Sony so long to release this tablet out, since most of the improvements are already Jelly Bean Stock related.
- AGAIN, THE BOOTLOADER IS LOCKED AND THE TABLET IS HARD TO ROOT

Yes, is the way it supposed to be by default.. You have to configure the wifi policy.. I never had any problems with the wifi.. and I still have ICS. :good:
btw!.. is the home launcher the same? the app drawer is transparent now? or is black again? Thanks! and sorry for my bad English!

This isnt the way its suppose to be, and it isnt like that on any other android device, including my Xperia Arc S and my friends Galaxy S3.
Normally, when you turn off the screen, the wifi is supposed to be on, so you still recieve notifications, but on XTS, it doesnt work, even if you set the wifi options to "Never turn off Wifi when turning off the display, even if the Wifi isnt being used".
Pros
No shutdowns so far
Stock browser is really fluid and support flash
Is all around more stable and fixed some graphics issues
Its jellybean, so we got the "new" api
Better multitasking
Cons
The 3d graphic performance has decreased a lot
The ui is a combination of sony, ics and jellybean and is not... clean
New graphic glitches
No major update feel, this is like ics with some things ported from jb...really mediocre
improvements
more respondsive faster then 4.0.3
5G performance wen't up 85%
no random shutdowns yet.
bluetooth headset interfearance with 5G not had so far think its fixed, can't confirm 2.4g yet.
bugs
google voice if saying set alarm in 10 hours it searches instead or sets alarm in 2 hours, or searched random stuff non related to what if asked it to do.
text got ported from xperia T which low resolution font some of ui elements got ported asswell.
if you look at the bar you see its bit pixelated even on big fonts.
UI is't butter smooth always
apps crash a lot especialy stock browser on sony america's own forum.
sony remotes don't fully save or only partly save or not save at all setup problem.
screen flickering is now a spark that sometimes occurs but less common.
missing stuff
jelly bean home launcher
jelly bean butter smooth animations.
jelly bean homescreen
jelly bean lock screen
jelly bean fonts icons
jelly bean camera app the one now is from ICS
In before get a full refund already, btw they did offer me one today i just told them i don't want one.
I'm not any better off with different brand due my curse anyway.
Oh, screen flickering has completely gone for me to.
You've basically covered everything there is about this update. It's definitely a lot more polished than ics ever was, which I am grateful for.

I'm not really sure if these wi-fi drops are a bug anymore, as this could simply be a 'deep-sleep' or battery saving function. I have a friend who's tab also has these drops, although I can't quite remember what it was.

Blurred fonts?
If anything, all my fonts are a big improvement over ICS, sharp, crisp and certainly no blurring.
No WiFi issues here either.
Right..

I just tried setting a number of alarms and various commands with Google Voice and it worked flawlessly, do you think it might be your accent that it is having trouble with?
Font's are really clear on mine as well as SWF has reported, perhaps there is something wrong with your screen? Just had a look with a magnifying glass as well and doesn't seem to be any excessive anti-aliasing either? Alot of fonts are vector based, which can scale without quality degradation, I would be surprised it these were a bitmap font, but don't know for sure.
I agree with your points about the stock JB icons and homescreens, damn Sony and their branding across all devices! If only they could just leave JB as it is and pop their bloatware on.
Sounds like Sony have been pretty reasonable with you to offer you a full refund for the tablet, if you do decide to turn that down you really will have to stop complaining about it, as much as you want to, your voice just isn't going to speed up their updates and/or improve their quality for you. Just going to have to suck it and and live with it...glitches an' all.

it actualy often search it instead which makes me think its not just accent.
If i ask who's president of america it does work correctly.
I can set dutch voice recognition asswell inside google voice no problem but again it works like crap and even worse.
Maybe its my top denture that i'm having or my tmj dysorder which makes me speak little harder.
Anyway if read so far more people reporting issues with font, old font was more crispier and sharper in ics 4.0.3 release6b

Think you not realising some issues might be just per region also or certain range, maybe your lucky or maybe your just blind.
Maybe its my social disability and my autism, but as i understand you now you talk as if no one has issues and their no issues for anyone.
then again your quoting me on that which makes me believe you think their no issues at all and i'm just picky guy.
Anyway if not always been picky but if you buy lot products in a year and see they are all DOA death on arival or damaged on arival or death after a month or damaged after a month, you really start to get pissed off a lot.
Now fear is playing with me and i got replacement which has right side where buttons are not sealed off correctly.
Sony insisted to give full refund even after i told them i don't want to.
It was't untill i say'd i was talking with other people from sony about software bugs and passing on feedback through them to the devs that they given me the choice for replacement.
Anyway won't known whats gonna happen untill tomorow.
Anyway i can basically take peak inside since not sealed properly which made me panick that was't splash proofed either.
Also a close of port was molten ruber.
I see broken products as a curse that i wanna get rid off asap, i wanna buy products that are in perfect quality condition not semi quality or poor quality.
software or hardware related.
Even wen't through like 12 eye glasses in single year all different opticiens all either scratch coating not right or AR coating not working.
along with all other problems if had with even samsung corrupt schandal they pulled with me i developed lot stress and tmj dysorder.
Anyway every time i buy something their something wrong it drains my will to life.
These software issues like blurry text i can life with for the momment better then random shutdowns, but these are issues that should be adressed and fixed.
The biggest deal atm is missing jelly bean homescreen and features.
but i do realise they just fixed random shutdowns and felt it was improvement aka rushed out for just that reason, and that a few follow up updates will follow soon to slowly add missing stuff and fix current bugs.

Ok ok, I'm not getting into the pissing match again, we all know what happened last time.
But maybe have a think about your previous statement as it might actually be more relevant to you, not me. I have nice clear text and you don't - so who is blind? Maybe take a picture up close and in focus and post it and we could compare to see if your anti-aliasing is much worse than on other users, just a thought.
Over and out.
Keep the tone of the conversation civil, or I'll close the thread.

Pressing the power button to wake is still kinda slow for me but it's whatever, and Wi-Fi reconnects a lot faster when it comes back from sleep so I have no problem with it.
Sent from my LT28at using xda app-developers app
When pressing the power button it takes a while to wake up on mine too! When I enable WiFi I have to disable and re-enable it to connect to any of my saved networks most of the times! :/
Hmm, that's interesting as the device wakes up instantly and the WiFi reconnects immediately too!
Weird.
Xperia Tablet S
I received JB update for my device yesterday. Now i got some little bugs.
After update, i tried to charge the battery. At %90, lockcreen notification indicated full charge and red led on side of the device turned to green. Anyway I continued to charge and it could reach %100.
Another issue, yesterday night i used my device over 1 hour watching youtube and surfing the net without any problems. This morning i started to watch youtube, but in the middle of a video device lost wifi signal for a while and recovered again. Then it started to do the same thing frequently (like maybe 3 minutes intervals). I shut down the device completely ad restarted, now i'm observing with a long youtube video.
One more thing. Sometimes (but very rarely) i see a thin horizontal line on the screen. It looks like a noise.
Regards,
I noticed the battery percentage issue in ICS, but seeing as though my Xperia T also had it, I assumed it was some built in feature by Sony?
Power saving perhaps?
Also, since running JellyBean, I've seen the line you mentioned on 2 occasions. Did I read somewhere that some Tegra 3 devices experience it - seems rare though, or at least alot rarer than the screen flickering on ICS?
