Is ics almost here? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I just went to check whether an update is released (I was bored) and It said "an update is available for your phone, but the servers are busy." What do you guys think this means? There's a thread on this for the skyrocket too...

I think it was ****ed up that Willy Wonka made Charlie think he didn't win the contest.....

It's the hidden law that people have to magically know that for the AT&T GS2 forum that you must only post in this thread right here.

threads like this are useless. For two reasons. A) we already have fully functional ics releases. With less bloat than the official ics will have. And b) use Google search. U can check the status of ics for our device yourself. And grab news about possible release dates.

This thread is useful for two reasons.
1. Samsung hasn't officially released a date yet and there really hasn't been a word on a Google search as to whether or not ICS has been released for the AT&T Galaxy S2.
2. Not everyone prefers the modified versions of the ROM, and though there is bloat on the AT&T versions, not everyone's incredibly satisfied with the custom ROM's (I am personally, but yeah, not everyone's down for the custom ROM's).
3. If the official ICS did come out, it can provide something or another to make the current custom ROM's better, such as the ability to get Google Wallet (or ISIS) working, for example.
I appreciate that this is a forum for developers, but that still doesn't allow us to flame every new thread that comes on here that's not created by one of the elite or something or another >.>

Dude. When ICS hits it hits. And if u can't find anything on Google about ics release dates or possible release dates u aren't searching right. Either way when it does drop u go right ahead and flash that buggy bloated OS. I'll stick with my AOKP.
Edit: I sound like a douche in this post. So no more arguing. Hope we get official ics too sometime soon. But odds are I won't flash it anyway ;-p

Oh you're right about this being a developers forum but you're completely wrong about the assumptions that only "elite" members can post. You're about as wrong as humanly possible. We only yell at people for threads like these because it does NOT help any developer in any way and this question gets asked over and over again all in separate threads which bog down the forums an leave less room for the more legitimate questions/ posts. And once you've been on here a while you usually know when you should post a thread or when you shouldn't. I've created a total of 2 threads and only one of them was a thread asking a question (the other was for a pair of cm7 themes) and I made sure it hadn't been asked before. Understand a little better?

I am with you on how this i777 should behave and tone down but you list 3 reasons that I think useless, or should I say "non-productive", here's why
1. If you google/search and find nothing, you MUST think, I mean automatically think, that it is either NOT NOW or NEVER happen. Just like when you search a word and it isn't in the dictionary, you should automatically know that the word is not exist or not being defined yet.
2. custom ROM is for who love to flash, if ones don't want to flash, why would they come here in first place? Moreover, if AT&T decide to release their OFFICIAL ICS for this i777, the owners would get the update automatically, right? Then why stop here anyway
3. If the official ICS did come out? if so, then search/google in step one already yield some results.

ICS custom ROMs timeline?

Specifically a question for developers:
So I'm just curious when do you guys think an ICS custom ROM might be available for our vibrants?
More specifically, has google released enough of the SDK and/or ICS code for someone to actually make a working ICS ROM?
Can't wait to see it in action!
Thanks
Edit: my question really is:
what requirements do developers need to start working on a custom ROM when a new OS is released?

[email protected] easy! Anyone anywhere who had working ics on a phone would be on every forum bragging till their head pops off..
There are hundreds of articles that say that google is releasing the source code once "it is officially on devices".
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2395048,00.asp
How long will it take them to have a working rom is another question. The gps issue we have with gingerbread has never been actually fixed, I think it is a driver issue..?
Either way, it all depends, but it IS a valid question once the source is released, until then people are just going to flame your thread.

First of all, it's still a question, regardless of the content, unless there is a specific development thread about ics, this question belongs in the q&a section, you're not someone special where the rules don't apply.
Secondly, since source for ics hasn't even been released yet (this is the vibrant, so some sdk port won't ever work, regardless of your secret hopes and dreams), and even then, it's gonna take people a bit to get situated with the new code, and get used to the new features, apis, and bugs.
To ask for a timeline for something that's not even out into phones that it's actually built for is kinda insulting to people IMHO.
But, I give it 2-3 months after source drop to get into a basic useable form on the vibrant.

here's a Vibrant ICS custom ROM i saw on internet

[Q] Noob to XDA Dev. Looking to see if I understand this right regarding ICS ROMs.

Hey guys! I've lurked around here for a while. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II for ATT a few months ago after being a longtime iPhone user. Therefore, I'm fairly new to the whole Android tweaking process. I want to install an ICS ROM onto my phone, particularly CM9. I've read the stickies, and am really trying to understand, but at the same time, do not wish to brick my phone. So could someone tell me if this is correct? Or where I'm wrong? Based on what I've read here, to install ICS, I need to...
1. Root my phone as outlined in the thread for that. (The one about not activating the yellow triangle. Since I'm on 2.3.6, I'll need to use "Odin3 One-Click Downloader".)
2. Backup my apps and texts and crap using Titanium Backup to my SD card.
3. Install the proper kernel (where do I find this?) using Mobile Odin.
4. Make sure CWM is active, backup NAND (I assume this is an option?) and flash CM9.
5. Flash Google Apps.
6. Restore my Ti backup.
Thanks guys for the help! And sorry if I'm being stupid/completely misunderstanding.

Read, read and read some more. Do a search for Hellraiser as there are no true ICS ROMs for this phone yet, only i900 ports.
If you need to ask questions like this, you are not ready for ICS and ICS is not ready for you.
Since I9100 kernel source code has only been out for a week and we had a bunch of I777-specific **** to fix - while lots of progress has been made things are not quite working yet.
man some people are rude in here....
And others are lazy. Welcome to XDA.
There are a lot of different roms. Usually they rewrite the kernel within the install of the rom. But basically you have the right idea...

Facts are facts, loser. There is not yet a fully-functioning official ICS ROM released for the i777, so any talk of one is premature. The guy admits in the title of this thread that he is a noob and doesn't quite understand. These are exactly the people who should not be flashing ANYTHING, let alone a ROM that is not ready for primetime. But keep on encouraging him and others so that the forum gets filled with people needing help to fix what they messed up. I'm sure you'll be rewarded with tons of adulation for your efforts. Troll indeed.

And we're already aware the ****rocket got an ICS leak that was useless to us. Thus this thread is useless because it's redundant - the OP is yet another person who broke the XDA rules and posted without searching. The ****rocket ICS leak has already been discussed numerous times in other threads, it is NOT news and does NOT justify creating yet another new thread so that you can get "omg I have my own thread on XDA!!!" cred.
We're about a week out of kernel sources, and we already have ICS in a better state than that leak. The only things that remain are polishing and NFC, and the polishing part would be required even if we'd gotten official ICS at the same time as the I9100 - it simply takes time to do a proper kernel on a new source base for a completely new Android base.
NFC may require an official I777 ICS release, or maybe just a bit of hacking to get the M250S/K stuff working on I777. If I can get the M250 stuff working on I777, there's a good chance I can get it working on CM9 at that point too.
Redundant thread is redundant.
Closed thread is closed.

No debating that fact, this was just a simple post about something relevant to the device being FINALLY made available. If I thought it would be responsible for some development breakthrough, I would have put it in the dev forum..no wait, that's for development..so I is just a general piece of information...but wait it's in general..
The ongoing problem, not just here, but rampant everywhere, is people feel empowered to be jerks because they have some grand illusion of themselves being elite. The post was general information, in the general section, for the specific device, there was no need for the snarky remarks. It's just another shining example of how much things have changed around here, and not for the better.
Last time I checked, XDA didn't have a rule that stated that only information deemed relevant to MotoMudder77 and Nick281051 may be posted in the General Section. To Phalanx7621's point, many people are looking upward and onward to JB, but it is going to be awhile before we see a fully stable JB build, as many of the ICS build still have quirks. Maybe this can help, maybe it won't, but how about we leave it up to the actual rom developers to decide.
Red5 can you just lock this thread before it get's out of hand. Thanks.

I know right. Kernels are never really CRITICAL unless there is a bad driver incompatibility or something of that nature. Look at something like my old Atrix, the ICS builds are still struggling due to a lack of drivers.
Actually this is very useful. Although we know it's there we can finally see the brickbug in the flesh. It's often useful to do a full source tree compare to see if there is anything 'interesting' left out between i9000 and i777.

Thanks.

What quirks does ics have? We only needed i9100 source. This will lead to no "developmental breakthrough"

I agree with OP, this is information relevant to our device and so belongs in the general section. If someone feels it isn't, be civil about it. Politely state your opinion and leave the thread. There's no reason to carry a bad attitude about it.

we have source, good deal. whether or not we need it matters none.
good share, but trust that those who actually want it, knew about it before this thread.
You call his posts useless, we are trying to help noobs realize what is important and what isnt.
This thread. useless. along with my posts explaining all this.
now lets let this be huh?

Yeah, it was only useful to figure out whether UCLE5 was dangerous.
Some users determined that the hard way for us.

The bad blood of some of the posters is an awful ingredient for a good community.
The elitism is discouraging and the arrogance poisoning.
You know that if a thread seems useless to you, why post and give it relevance? Let it die and it will truly reach irrelevance. There's no further point for a thread that went to oblivion (aka page 5+).
To me it reeks of immaturity and arrogance, and a huge lack of perspective on the world, internet forums and life in general.
This could have little to no value to most/all devs, but what's the need to state it over and over again. This thread has few insightful responses and they come from real devs like Entropy.
If you have never developed a single non-trivial program, how can you be so fast to judge a source code that you won't even download, read or understand? As Entropy stated, at least this gives us some insight on the brick f--k up. Too bad we could not gather it non-empirically.

Sorry for the rant.

[Q] Question on the state of G Note II Modding

Hey guys, I have had my VZW Note II for a few months now, and I tried to root/unlock it a few weeks back but ran into multiple issues that prevented me from completing the process (specifically the unlocking posed problems, no doubt because of my own mistakes).
My question is, what is the state of G Note II modding right now? I came from the GNex (rooted) and it had a very robust community, but it seems like the difficulty with unlocking this phone might lead to a less vibrant set of options for flashing. Is this phone getting a lot of dev attention or is it not worth the trouble to crack?
This is subjective, I know, but give me your opinions if you dont mind! Thanks in advance!
This isn't really a subjective question. There are two forums that could answer your question. Development and original development. Take a look and see what you think.
I will say if you compare anything to the options on a nexus device you'll be disappointed.

I have been shot down when I post questions in the dev threads, but do you think this is an acceptable post for them? I have no doubt that it will be less robust than Gnex, but I figured it might still be worth doing for cyan or AOKP or whatever. Anyways, thanks for the tip!

DO NOT POST YOUR QUESTION THERE! This is in the right place my point was go to them and look at the different ROMs. If it is good enough for you or the is a ROM you want to try then you answered your own question

There is no good answer to this. What is mainstream for one person is early-adopter for another. The right answer is to do some reading in the ROM/kernel threads and decide your own comfort level. That you asked this question makes me think you should wait. I would say that dev for this device is still gaining traction. It's only been out a couple of months.

There are half a dozen or so Touchwiz based ROMs and at least that many AOSP ROMs. Add in 4 or 5 kernels and considering the we only got the bootloader unlock about two months ago, I think development has been great. In all honestly, I am not sure how many more ways ROMs can be tweaked...there might be some diminishing utility after 10+ ROMs.
I got my phone about 10 days ago, and had it rooted/unlocked within a few hours. I didnt have any issues at all getting it there. I made sure not to accept the VZW OTA update, and when I saw it was going to force me to update within 5 days, that forced my hand to go ahead and root it.
I just used the following guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207 to root it, and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636 to unlock it.
If you have accepted the OTA update, your steps change, and you'll use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348 to unlock it instead.
I personally havent messed with AOSP roms. Coming from GNex that was all I ran, and I'm enjoying a slick TouchWiz setup right now. I remember on my Droid Charge, having NO desire to keep TW, but it's a lot better on this phone.
I am a Charge refugee as well...what a difference the Note 2 is. I've run CleanRom and three builds of Beans. Don't think I want to give up some the the Touchwiz features for AOSP...at least until key lime pie comes out.
Ugh I hate these threads.
If you want it to be different stop being a little girl about it and go develop yourself. Nothing is stopping you but yourself.
If you want something that doesn't exist, make it exist or get an insane amount of money and back people to make it exist.

Do you feel better after that childish tantrum of a response? You hate these questions, yet you didn't actually respond to what I asked.
I am not a dev, nor do I want to be. I asked not as someone looking for features that don't exist, but as a user who wants to know how the note II compares to the gnex in terms of xda support.
Either answer the question I asked, or keep your whining to yourself.

I did answer your question. If you want more support for this device develop yourself for it. That is all there is too it. If everyone had your attitude we wouldnt have any one developing for this phone.

My attitude? You began your response by saying that you hate questions like mine, which is not the most civil of ways to speak to a stranger.
More importantly, you still missed my question. I asked if it was worth my time to unlock it, I did not complain about a lack of dev support. It was an honest question which you ignored and instead responded in a rude manner. Thanks for nothing, a second time.

I'm not sure what this guy did to launch you into that insanely now cliche rant. This is Q&A not a dev thread. The OP did not ask for an ETA or request a feature or compare one ROM to another, or ask a question that could have been answered with a search.
Many people admonished the OP, including me, but you are the only who felt the need to rip him a new one. You could have just linked him to the XDA rules instead of going off like you did If the OP needed a refresher.
Maybe Q&A is not the best sub-forum for you if you can't assume good intentions. You have your own threads that you can patrol for slights real and imagined.

Your question was not worded very well to say that since you wanted to compaire it to the gnex. A quick look in the development sections shows what is available. My previous points still stand. Always see these threads at least 2-3 times in the 6 months i own a phone that isnt a nexus.

Sorry I've been around long enough yo get frustrated by people on this site. I've also been saying the same things for months and linking to the XDA rules doesn't make people care, giving them harsh statements do.
If OP wanted his question answered he could have searched. Plenty of info is available.
My views have become, if you haven't searched and then are asking why or if you should do something, you shouldn't do it at all and shouldn't ask if you should.
Search first then ask questions.
If you want to compare the Gnex to the Note2 development, all you have to do is look in both forums and see how many ROM/athreads are in the dev sections. Weather you unlock or not has nothing to do with it. Do it or don't.
In answer to the original poster, yes it is worth unlocking.
The beans and cleanrom roms alone add enough polish to warrant it.
The ability to take a nandroid is worth it. Everyone backs up their computer..... so why not a tablet
There is a kernel or two? That work with stweaks for cpu/gpu power control. A forum member also put together some nice flash able profiles for it even. If you want to increase battery or performance it's possible.
Depending on where you are at, one of the two available basebands may work better for you. That can't be flashed without a recovery....
Because it came with a locked bootloader of the start, there seemed to be a delay with devs because they first had to figure out how to unlock it to begin development. Now that is unlocked the wheels seem to be moving pretty good.
On a side note, if I recall correctly there may be a way to run international roms on it. You would want to research, I haven't really looked into it. Could be wrong.

The original modem has faster 3g for me, but the new one has better connectivity and speed on 4g. I wish we had combined modems with ie. 3g from one modem and 4g from the other.
