Thinking Gorilla Glass was scratch resistant as I have seen on YouTube, I showed my friend that it doesn't scratch. I took a coin and rubbed it on the screen. I wasn't even pushing that hard. When I look, there are thin scratches from the coin! They are only noticeable when the screen is off. Except for two small ones. They are about 5 mm long and pretty thin. They are visible all the time especially when there is a white background. They distort the colour and now I'm obsessed knowing they are there. Is there any way to remove them? Such as tooth paste or some other material? I don't want anything that will remove the oleophobic coating on the screen. Just something to fill in the scratches. Thanks!

Don't be surprised when Asus reject your RMA request?
Sure it's scratch resistant, but it does not mean you should go out and rub a coin into it.
Sorta like trying out a bulletproof vest by shooting yourself...
I also have a tiny scratch right where the bezel meets the display because i droped a lighter on my prime once.
Glass will always be susceptible to scratches no matter what brand, its physics! Would be cool to have a tablet with a diamond touchscreen though. Now that would be scratch proof
I once dropped my Evo 3d with an extended battery on my prime. No scratches and that thing was heavy and it was from 4-5 feet as well. Landed screen first.

Why don't you put a screen protector on your device? First, if nothing else, you'll be sure not to add any additional scratches to your screen.
2nd, other people have posted that scratches were not visible once they put a screen protector on their screen.
I have tried three different ones, ArmorShield, Skinomi and ACase.
Really like the A Case screen protector, and it comes three to a pack, so if you mess up the first one, you still have two more (it's a dry apply screen shield)

Wow people really do confuse the difference between "-proof" and "-resistant". Have you ever tried submerging a water-resistant watch in water?
In any case, most touch screen devices these days are coated with oleophobic coatings which scratch much more easily than glass.

You almost certainly scratched the oleophobic coating, not the screen itself. Not that it matters really, the screen still looks scratched. Those coatings are not nearly as tough as the underlying glass. I have noticed similar little scratches on my Galaxy Nexus screen. All in all, I still think the coating is great though.

That makes plenty of sense as im pretty sure glass wont scratch from the little amount of pressure i was applying. The thing is, there are two small spots, one being around 5-7 mm long and the other being only around 2 mm long. They are mostly only noticed when a light coloured backround is on, such as the white backround in the browser. They seem to show up sort of ''Rainbowish' these ones must be the actual glass that is scratched because otherwise i doubt they would show up like that. Anyways, thanks for the kind reply!

I am considering purchasing a screen protector ASAP. Does the Acase screen protector show up in anyway? What i mean is, will the screen look any different? An example would be an anti-glare screen protector makes the screen more matte and i dont think the colours show as nicely. Thanks for the recommendations!

Those might actually be small fractures in the glass. Similar occurrences have been discussed in the My Screen Cracked (or something like that) thread. It seems like Asus may have a glass quality issue with some of their units.

How would the screen have fractured from a quarter that rubbed on the screen? That makes sense of why the scratches are deeper than the others but I don't know how the screen would fracture. Is there anyway I can try to ride these fractures/scratches? I have been searching for weeks now and the best product I could find would be "iDrops" they polish out scratches but people say it's removed the oleophobic coating. Will some sort of toothpaste rubbed into the scratch work?

No that will only make it worse (toothpaste at least). I think you have to accept it can't be 100% fixed with some paste/polish. You could contact Asus for a new touchscreen.
I've had my prime since December with no screen protector or case. i use it extensively everyday. no scratches at all on my display or back cover.
I really don't care if the scratches can be seen when the screen is off I just don't want them to be visible when the screen is on (rainbow like). As long as they aren't visible when the screen is on is fine with me. Do you know of any fine polishes that might do this that won't harm the glass or the screen?

My Prime once fell of from a bed on the floor, around 40-50cm, it didn't got any scrathes as it was attached to the dock, and was half open, though now I have a feeling the dock does not hold the tablet so tightly as before.
But what I don't like about the Gorrilla Glass (or either it's not calibrated touch detection in the software side) is that the Tablet does not detect my touches when I use the back side of my finger (finger nail), does anyone else have the same issue? Other touch devices I have (iPad and EVO 3D) detect my touches from front and back of the finger the same without issues.
I actually have a HOX with Gorilla Glass 2, but this seems to be the most active and recent thread regarding removal of scratches from GG, so I suppose it'd still be rather relevant. No point starting a new thread just for GG on a different device, right?
Yes, I babied this phone like... a baby since i got it on the first day and no screen protectors were out yet, but somehow it still got a nick(rather visible) in the upper left corner and some light scratches around the middle of the phone.
Then I found some manufacturing defects but I'm afraid they'll refuse to repair/replace my phone under warranty if they see the nick.
So has anyone found any way to cover up the scratches? Even temporarily, just to get through the chat with the assistance team? (No I can't get 3M's 06070, lowest quantity sold here is 6 quarts for ~$400. Way too expensive.)

I think I should change the thread around. If your X10 has absolute no screen protector on (meaning that you removed the stock one), do you have any scratches on your phone?
The reason is theres all these scratch tests on youtube which proves glass screens to be pretty scratch resistive.

So according to these tests, I don't see how I would scratch my screen other than dropping it. But if I really dropped it, I doubt a screen protector would do any good.
I took mine off a month ago and simply never got around to replacing it, not even a mark on it since, I prefer it off.
My experience with silicon covers and others is that they end up damaging the more than they protect it, dust gets caught under them and acts like sandpaper.

Using a plastic film over the glass panel is like putting a hideous gown on a Ferrari. I used my Galaxy S without any protection for a month, and it was fine. Just don't let harsh objects or sand rub agqinst the screen.

I had a silicon body protector and a cheap screen protector on my X10, then I finally bought an InvisibleShield (full body) and love it.
In my case though, the silicon protector I had was constantly pressing the camera button, which would disable my face buttons, making me think my phone was suffering a bunch of random glitches. Put up with that for a couple of weeks before I discovered others online having the same issue due to their own covers.
I work outdoors and tend to be pretty hard on my phones, so I don't think I'd ever be brave enough to let my X10 run around "nude".
Hands down hell yes!! I take very good care with all my phones and I think screen protectors are a must especially for smartphones. I don't think I can stand having my phone scratched even just a tiny bit lol. I'm not a big fan of cases though cuz...I think people should just avoid dropping them in the first place, but there's always a worse comes to worse scenario huh? anyway, I was playing with my friends iPhone today and it had an anti-glare matte screen protector that is absolutely amazing. It has a nice texture to it too that makes your swiping and scrolling a more... pleasurable experience. I believe there's one for the X10 as well, I'm gonna go check that out =)
I too, use double protectors. And, the lint free fiber cloth to clean the screen. I am a clean freak, per say.
Its a must for me, sometimes I forget and put it in the same pocket with my keys, just imagine the scratches out could get.

If they used a hard glass you should only get hairline scratches at worst, which for some is ok to live with. Though you will definitely still get scratches on it, unless they used sapphire crystal like on expensive watches which is practically only scratchable by diamond

I even proved a point to my brother by trying to scratch the screen with a coin. Still no scratches. Obviously, if you manage to damage your screen with a coin, it is not my fault!
Don't go without a screen protector. My screen is mashed now.

I accidently removed the pre-installed screen protector after trying to add another cheap screen protector over the top. but sharpishly replaced it the following day with a Martin fields screen protector best £10 i spent and actually feels nicer than the screen itself to scroll with and leaves less marks. i couldn't go without one risking scratching the screen. thats some expensive kit to just scratch and ruin.

I have removed the preinstalled screen protector and a have a couple very small hairline scratches from random pocket contact(possibly keys). The X10 screen is by no means scratch proof or very resistant however i noticed a great improvement in the touch sensitivaty without the screen protector.
Last week i noticed i had one scratch on the lower part of my screen,checked today,and now there are four similair cuts.
I am extremely careful with my phone and have no idea how they got there. Is anybody else having this problem?

a friend has some small surface scratches on his since day one, but he's kinda strange like that and he doesn't care...
Really happy with my screen, no scratches (even without a case and it my pocket/bag with keys and coins and other nasties) and the screen doesn't seem to smudge as badly as previous phones and is easy to clean when it does smudge.
The scratches are really small,try putting your phone screen directly at a light source and look at it from different angles. I'm scared that I got a defective screen on my phone,because the only thing remotely sharp that could of made the scratches were my nails,but that shouldn't be happening with gorilla glass.

The one thing that realllly scratches gorilla glass is sand, or anything sand like. Keys and all that are fine. But seriously beware of sand. If you're keeping it in a case or something make sure that there isn't a piece of sand or something similar in the lower end (where the keyboard would be), same goes for pockets and stuff.
I heard that sand and jewellery could cut the glass and nothing like that ever came near the screen.
Except maybe,could sugar crystals (from a packet of sugar) cut it?

if u put ur screen under bright light at odd angles u will see fine scratches there
those scratches are in the coating not the glass
the coating is highly scratchable anything can scratch it unlike the glass beneath it which is scratch resistant
The small scratches probably merely affect the oleophobic coating and not the gorilla class.
The oleophobic coating has been applied to improve the legibility of the screen under direct sunlight but some consumers complain that the oleophobic coating is very scratch-able and prone to wearing off prematurely...
Some people even go as far as advising against applying screen protectors arguing that the adhesive layers found in cheap screen protectors damage the oleophobic coating of the screen thus causing small scratches or cuts.
I got one of the scratches you describe, very small and hard to see but its there. Ive been treating the thing extra careful too.
As the poster above said it is as if its on a very very thin coat on top of the gorilla glass.
If I may suggest getting a screen protector. They're really cheap on ebay. I spent 3 euros for 6 from ecell, and then I spent (before) for 6 (of a different kind which I'm not too happy with) for around 2 euros, another company which usually comes from Germany. Here are the links:

I think the SAMOLED+ screen is too beautiful to have a screen protector on it. They destroy the colours and make images look much worse,for me it ruins the point of having a great screen. Just my two cents.

Good screen protectors don't effect the image quality and vibrance of the display. Try SGP's ultra crystal protectors.
So... On my phone i always use those plastic film thingies because a smartphone is something that i take everywhere with me and put it in different locations like pockets, backpacks etc. Other stuff can be in those pockets so scratches are definately a possibility. I just dont feel comfortable without it and they dont bother me at all while using the phone.
But on a tablet like the prime its a whole different story. When I use it I sit somewhere, comfortably and safe. When i take it with me it's in its neoprene sleeve. Also i usually take the dock with me, and when its docked the screen is automatically protected...
The Prime has even Gorilla glass so i dont plan on putting anything on it. This is my first tablet so you guys may have more experience with it... Your thoughts? The glass feels just so awesome to the touch, i dont think a protector can replicate that.
So do you plan on putting a protector on it?
Btw1: i really dont care about scratches on the back^^ It gives the device some personality! Its the same with books for me. Hate it when they are new and shiny. Feel free to comment on that as well

i havent been using one, i just rub my tfp against whatever cotton shirt i might be wearing, that cleans the screen and i havent had any scratches.
i use a leather folio style case, so the screen is usually covered for the most part, i just use my shirt to get finger prints off lol
I have a dry application crystal clear screen protector and I love it mostly because it doesn't collect fingerprints and smudges as easy and is easier to wipe clean if anything this is worth it alone plus you don't have to worry about a accidental scratch somehow.
I don't and won't be using one. The tablet has gorilla glass and is very durable. My phone also has it and that goes all sorts of places and has remained scratch free. Considering my tablet is only at home loose otherwise always in the dock which then goes in the neoprene case, I have no desire to put one on and am not going to worry about it.
Prime has gorilla glass. I don't have one n my screen looks great. Veryyyy scratch resistant. Plus it cleans off so easily with the included cloth. All screen protectors do is degrade screen quality n throw off touch response.

I took my prime down to the invisible shield stand in the mall to get a screen protector. hen I got there they said because the device was so new they didnt have anything for it. But because it was a TFP the guy offered to custom cut one for me.
Say what you want, but I got mine done without even a fleck of dust under it and it offers no distortion of my screen, nor do I notice any sensitivity loss. Not only that but I find its way easier to clean.
Besides who knows whats gunna jump out of nowhere and try and scratch your screen.
screen protector I have does not throw off sensitivity at all I was worried it would but it didn't just as responsive.
It may be false sense of security, but I have the skinomi protection on mine. Just in case. The screen is beautiful and I don't want anything to happen to it.
Yes. I liked the feel of it better without the screen protector. But I've not noticed any degrading of color, etc. There are 2 specs of dust that got underneath that are driving me MAD and that may end up being why I take it off, maybe. But overall its better because no finger prints and less worry.

I've had my desire for nearly 2 years and there isn't a mark on the screen dropped at a few times too, great big dent on one corner but no scratches. Them corner protectors but probably a good idea but not worth trying to get a screen protector on.

Take a shower and install the screen protector in the bathroom when it is still humid. Works like a charm to install screen protectors dust free.

Guys, I want to bring this to your attention so what happened to me doesn't befall you:
The Gorilla Glass, while tough, can be scratched quite easily under the right conditions. I was in a thread a few weeks agao, being all smart (like my Username, LOL!) saying that a screen protector was a waste. a) Because they make a beautiful screen something "less beautiful" b) that they are difficult to place on the glass properly, and c) My biggest pout: Anything that is sharp enough, hard enough, and strikes with enough force or velocity to scratch, chip or otherwise damage Gorilla Glass will likely not have any less impact from a piece of plastic between the glass and the projectile.
In other words, if something is going to damage the hardened glass, how is a decidedly super thin piece of plastic going to stop it?
In retrospect, I was very wrong, or at least partly wrong. That very night my daughter sat with me playing games on the Prime. We played a few games together: Where's my water, and similar. Then I played Need For Speed, and then she played Fruit Ninja.
When I went to clean all the 11 year old finger prints off, I noticed what looked to be scratches in the glass. At first I thought it was just debris from sticky fingers, but no... it was... HOLY **** THE GLASS WAS FREAKING SCRATCHED RIGHT THE **** THROUGH!!!!!!
Seems she had a cheap metal ring on, with a split back that lets you adjust the size. By holding the tablet in portrait, and not hard or in any way roughly, she scratched the glass on the right side of the camera, a 1" wide SET of scratches, not one or two, but a swirl of perhaps 12 or 15 scratches that were deep enough to be basically impossible to remove.
I tried to see if there were any methods to polish this out. including seeking help from a glass polishing co, and optometry tools and materials. All advised against it, and the amount of sanding, and polishing needed would have put an obvious "dent" in the glass that would make it no longer true or flat.
Fortunately I had insurance, and for a $125 deductible I was able to replace the unit. Lesson (a huge one) learned. Lesson I am trying to pass along? BE CAREFUL. Check EVERYONE who uses the the tablet to make sure they have no rings or jewelry. If a screen protector makes you feel more comfortable, b all means get one, and keep it on there, there are two types, the rubbery "sticky" ones that I hate, since your finger stick and won't slide on it very well, and the harder, shinier material (actually comes in an anti reflection satin finish too I believe).
No matter what you decide remember, if something looks like it could scratch the glass, don't take chances with it. better safe than hugely sorry. Also, while Gorilla Glass IS scratch resistant, it is NOT BREAK RESISTANT. When I saw the damage to my screen, I admit, I actually was close to tears... No ****.

In a word: Yes.
Not so much for protection though but to minimize reflections and fingerprints.
While losing a tiny bit of sharpness and color the display is much more readable under any circumstances. No need to "wash" off fingerprints every 10 minutes, no need to hold the tablet so no lights are reflected right where I want to read something onscreen.

Since a tablet screen is much bigger than that of a smartphone applying it has to be done cautious and calm. To get rid of any particles between screen and protector I used TESA stripes to pull the protector off a bit and then another one to remove the particles.
Good idea with the shower, though.

I concur. A screen protector isn't necessary for normal use. Also, you might have some issues docking it with a protector on.
i dont see any point to use screen protector, its not small device like regular cellphone which may be accidently put in same pocket as your keys and therefore scratch your screen. I use mine mostly with dock, so when its closed its protected by dock, and while not having it docked i use leather case from ebay. And afterall it has gorilla glass should be durable
IMO, no, it does not need one, but it never hurts to be safe. I've no case for mine yet, and am about to have a Skinomi skin to throw on it, and have been using it for only three days. My screen is perfect, I'm a neat freak and keep it spotless, keeping a cloth on hand and using a stylus. However, a case/skin for the back most certainly is needed if you don't like scratches. I don't mind them, my phone is covered in dings and scratches and gouges, but the screen is fine with a protector.
In short, no, it doesn't really need one, but yes I'll be using one. Damned if I'll accidentally hit my jacket zipper too hard or something retarded.
Like the above poster said, does it NEED a screen protector, no. But lets be realistic, people give gorilla glass way too much credit thinking that its invincible. If the tab is always in an immaculately clean place, then you have nothing to worry about. But a lot of dirt particles also have tiny particles of sand in it, which easily scratches glass. Key tests are just useless propaganda. Its little sand particles and other small minerals found in dirt that will scratch your screen, which is how most peoples phone screens get scratched without them realizing. Dirt and dust are everywhere. But if you're careful enough, you can minimize the issue. Personally, I spent $500 on a device so I feel an extra $10 to protect the screen against scratches and preserve resale value isn't much to ask. Also, Skinomi has a screen protector that has a cutout for the dock, I highly recommend it,its super clear.
Long story short, you don't need one if you're going to be careful enough. But don't fall for marketing hype and think that gorilla glass is indestructible. It actually marks up pretty easy (especially if theres a coating on top of the gorilla glass). I put screen protectors on my devices so I don't have to baby them. If i'm always worried about scratches, I can't fully enjoy it.
Just curious as to how many people use a screen protector on their TF. If you don't, how's your screen holding up?
I've had my transformer since black Friday and the screen has not one scratch and I take it to class everyday. I have a case on it too.

I have dogs that like to jump on beds, so I use one just in case. Also I use one so I don't fret about my glass being dirty or when a girl with rings on is playing with it, I will always know I have a perfect glass behind the screen protector. Sadly my screen underneath has funky **** going on like light bleed and a discolored spot

I have a very tiny dot on the border of the glass which I don't like much, just in case.
But the problem is how to apply a screen protector!! on my HD2 with its 4.3" display I had too much difficulty to put a screen protector without leaving dust underneath it, on a 10" display it is impossible....
I don't use a screen protector and my screen is perfect.
Tough i always keep it docked, so i guess it helps a lot

Biggest tip I can give is to apply the screen protector in the bathroom after running a hot shower to get the steam in the room to make the dust die down. Also, the bit of added moisture in the air helps to let you slide the screen protector around a bit before letting it become settled.

I use clear tape to get dirt out from underneath. But yes bathroom helps although I don't make it steamy. The biggest problem I ran into was aligning the whole thing. One corner would always be off just a tad. I ended up trimming it a bit and I can't even tell.

I use a screen protector on my TF101 mainly because it reduces glare and the fingerprints come off easier and it feels smoother that the regular gorilla glass
My tf101 was a best buy display model. It didn't have a screen protector then and it doesn't have one now. I sell saltwater livestock for a living and I'm a mechanic on the side, so it frequently comes in contact with dirt, grease, and saltwater. Not a scratch on the screen. I use a targus case to protect the screen when its not in use.
Regarding putting a screen protector on. Its just like window tint fellas. Clean screen as best you can. Mix some hand soap and tap water in a spray bottle. Spray screen protector and device and apply screen protector. Now spray front side of screen protector. Use a credit card or rubber squeegee to squeegee the water out from under the protector. As the water comes out it will drag the dust with it. Keep a towel on hand to dry the device as the water runs out. You might see a little water left under the protector after squeegeeing but it will dry completely over the next few days so don't worry about it.

its just too bad that SGP has no longevity... and by that I mean I can still get a martian fields and skinomi products for my old Touch Pro 2 but cant get a screen protector for either OR my TF101 through SGP/Steinheil...
When it comes to screen protectors for me its SGP/Steinheil then Martian Fields (then pretty much anyone else), but like I said, 8-12 Months later they drop it completely... so unless you stock up on them, be prepared to be screwed to find a different brand if you have an issue (I had my nephew destroy one of mine... I couldnt get my finger under the side but 2min with him and me not looking and it was off and bent in half )
My .02 anyway..

And...you'd be wrong. All those things he did most likely wouldn't scratch regular glass. For the most part keys and coins aren't hard enough. What will scratch glass, gorilla or not, is sand. Sand and grit is everythere. If your hands are dirty its there. It there's lint in your pockets its there. That's the enemy of screens.

Had the transformer since it was first released. After a few months of ownership i tried the SGP ultra fine matte protector as the insane glare was starting to bother me. Had that on for a few months during which the screen nor the protector took any damage as i keep it docked when its not in use. Took it off 3 months ago and since then i've gotten one hairline scratch thats about a cm long, not noticeable unless you knew where it was.
I would say if you keep the thing docked and take care when cleaning the screen its not necessary to have a screen protector. However if you don't use a dock and the tablet is constantly exposed to any number of things that can scratch it, or you're not in the habit of taking good care of your gadgets then a screen protector might not be a bad idea.
Every time i see one of those glass scratch demos i facepalm as i've had quite a few devices that were supposed to be "scratch proof" get scratched by the most mundane things. Its all about angle, material, and force. I can slice a screen and not get a scratch but angle it a bit and give it more pressure and I bet i can get these screens to scratch pretty easily.
Scratch resistance is awesome in the lab, but in the real world there are just too many variables to be absolutely sure.

Got some ugly scratches when I decided to use the flip cover case. Some sand or dirt got in between the glass and the leather cover. My heart is still broken because of it.

So how do we feel about ZAGG screen protectors? I'm looking to put one on my Slider. In the past, I have been pleased with Caseen and their glareshatter screen protectors. Just wondering if there's any really recommended brands?

I've used ZAGG a few times, once on my zune, once on my evo and again on my evo LTE. The original ZAGG product is one of those soft wet apply films that are a bit grippy compared to a hard plastic film protector. I hated it for my zune and i hated it for my evo because of the grippiness as well as the slight orange peel effect. Over time the zune's wore down enough so that it was smooth and had no orange peel, but that took about a year and only in the spots you swipe around to change tracks and volume. Same thing happened with my evo.
On the Evo LTE I was tempted to try zagg HD, which actually was much better than the original film in that it was a lot more clear and had less grip, but alas it was still a soft wet apply film and i just couldn't get used to it.
If you like the grippy texture then the zagg and similiar soft films last longer than the hard plastics. It seems like a love it or hate it situation for a lot of people, myself included.
I will always go with the hard plastic dry install as those are in my opinion easier to apply because you can hover over the screen and slowly lower it as opposed to sliding it around on liquid and then have to squeegee it all out later. Even if i have to replace it once every few months as opposed to once a year for the zagg, i will still stick with the hard plastics.
Ok I have removed my screen protector that was pre-installed on the Xperia S and it has seemed to go okay for me. I wanted to write a little guide to inform others incase they have been thinking of doing it.
Pros:
Capacitive buttons are much more responsive. I usually get them every time now.
No more little edge at the top of the clear section. I hated how there was a sharp edge caused by the screen protector when I went to swipe the buttons. No problem with it now.
Screen is more responsive to touch.
The phone looks better. No dust gets in the screen protector edges and the screen looks a little clearer.
Cons:
The screen is not as protected against scratches or falls.
The screen gets VERY dirty quickly. Be prepared to rub it off all the time as fingerprints seem to slime up the screen quickly. I guess they didn't use an oleophobic coating to reduce the dirt and grime. It's not a deal breaker, but it sure as hell is annoying.
The proximity sensor is much easier to trigger, so when you are using it and it goes over the sensor it will quickly turn off the screen.
There is a slight gummy sensation left over by the screen protector residue. It will dissipate after some time but it can be really annoying. Use some alcohol and a coarse rag to get it off sooner.
I prefer the feel of the screen protector to the screen itself. The screen seems to not be as smooth but maybe there is still some residue left over.
Sidenote:
I have dropped the phone from 3 feet onto industrial thin carpet and it is still okay even without the shatter proof sheet. Remember that almost every phone will have problems if you drop it onto a hard surface and it lands on the edges.
The screen material seems to be very resistant to scratches. I have a defective unit that is being returned so I decided to do a couple tests on it before sending it back in. I used a key to scratch the screen in the corner. First I tried a light scratch and then I tried a medium pressure scratch. Neither of these showed a mark. Even a pretty heavy pressure did not leave a mark. I am pretty satisfied with the results though I imagine if you used a sharp edge and a lot of pressure it would scratch it. Better than I had thought though, Gorilla glass is overrated anyways.

EDIT:
To remove the screen protector, just use fingernails and pry it up near the bottom, top of the clear bar. Once you get a piece peeled up, grab it firmly and pull the rest off. If it is still really hard heat the screen with a hairdryer for a second or two and it will loosen the glue.

I don't believe that post to be correct, Sony support site has stated you can remove it and be just fine. You just won't have that extra layer of protection. I have dropped mine without the shatter proof sheet and it is fine. I'd like to see some proof about how much security the "shatter proof" sheet will add. Even after reading that post, I feel that the shatter proof sheet is just an added piece of marketing so that people will not complain as much by the lack of gorilla glass. Sony would have put Gorilla Glass in the phone if they thought it was necessary and made the warranty void if you removed the sheet, but they did neither.
The shatter proof sheet makes the screen feel terrible. I will never use mine. I never had a screen protector on my HTC Hero and I never had a problem.
The most optimal thing to do is remove the shatter proof sheet and add a screen protector to help deal with the oils and dirt from your hands.
If you worry that much about shattering your screen then get a SquareTrade warranty.
Maybe you are right but I don't think they put this sheet just for decoration,i remember they did also for the X10 and I remove it in this time but the screen get less responsive.It's some kind of protection against scratching.

The shatter proof sheet scratches easier than the mineral glass. Like I listed above, I tested scratches the raw screen with keys at different pressures and I got nothing. Mineral glass is damn hard and Sony is supposed to use a special type.
It's your call though, I am just trying to add some info for others.
Also there is no reason for removing the sheet to make it less responsive since you are actually removing another layer which is getting between your actions and the digitizer, it doesn't work that way.
I don't know why the screen get less responsive,maybe the glue can't be removed easily.

That could be it, I hated the feel first off. Used some goo gone and alcohol and it cleaned it right up. The thing that makes mine feel worse after removing it is the oils and dirt stick like mad to the raw screen. Im gonna put a really thin one on just to protect from that, but I am glad I removed that terribly think one.
I agree that the most annoying thing if you dont use screen protector is fingerprint/oil smudge
I took it off aswell and hated the feel of the pure glass... Just too sticky and the fingerprints nearly made me crazy so i put on a normal 1

Cant be used with a screen protector. On phones that do have the oleophobic coating, putting on a screen protector makes it useless because as soon as you remove the protector the coating would also be removed with it.
It's just that a phone shouldnt have a factory applied protector it's ridiculous. I myself never use a screen protector and probably will never.
This post might sound funny but for quite a few days, I actually had a Matte screen protector over the screen protector preinstalled by Sony. I actually had no idea it was even there until I found a post on XDA about the same and then checked the earpiece region and then, *facepalm*
A few notes from that, the screen was still responsive and I actually liked it better than the Arc S one. The capacitive buttons weren't responding as well and I didn't like it initially but once the useless matte protector was off, everything was as smooth as butter. I personally like to have an additional layer of protection just as a safeguard. Gives me more sense of security (even though there isn't much).

What I meant was why would removing the laminate sheet make the buttons less responsive. Mine are MUCH more responsive without it and I have forgotten about the complaints leveled against the capacitive buttons because of it.

Lol that's why Sony bundles a screen protector, to protect the shatter proof sheet from scratching.
Your SUPPOSED to have two layers, the lower layer protects from shattering and the upper layer with the screen protector of your choice protects from scratching.
All this talk of you telling people to take off something using goo gone on a brand new phone is ludicrous. Just install the screen protector provided over the laminate sheet as soon as you take it out of the box as Sony designed it and be done with it.
I'm reading all this and was kinda kept by surprise for hearing for the first time about this sheet, since I can't find it on my XS. Is it possible that my unit came without this shatter-protection-layer-sheet-thingy?
