[Q] Getting around fat32 4gb file size limit - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Does anybody know of a way to get around the 4gb file size limit on the flyer/evo view? I'd like to put some bigger movies on the device. I'm running HC if that matters with the stock kernel. Thanks

There is no way to "get around" the limit with FAT32. It is a limit of the file system itself.
You could try formatting your microsd as EXT4 (a linux file system) and see if the tablet likes it. I'm not even sure if the Flyer/View would support it though, but worth a try. And if it works the file size limitation would no longer apply.
The only drawback in my opinion would be that you couldn't work with that card from Windows any more (as in putting the card directly in a laptop/card reader), but leaving the card in the tab and mounting via USB should still work.

[Q] viewing jpeg pics from a sd card

Benn lurking here for a few days trying to soak in all the info I can until I get my G-Tab from the last woot-off in. Let me start out by saying that the community that has grown around this tablet is great. Lots of good info and work being done to push the G-tab to its potential. Thanks to the Devs and everyone else who contributes.
So my question is this ...... After doing some research I plan to install Vegan 5.1 on my G-Tab when it arrives. I will be sharing the tab with my wife who is a photographer. She said the main feature she wants is to be able to use the tablet to proof her photographs with her clients after a photo shoot. Meaning she will be taking the SD card out of the camera and using a USB memory card reader to access the SD card on the G-Tab. Will this be possible to do on the G-Tab? Is there an app or software that would be better for viewing pictures off of an SD card?
From what I've read so far there seems to be a problem with the tablet not recognizing sdcard2 right? or is there a workaround or fix for this?
Please let me know any suggestions you guys have on how she will have to go about viewing the pictures off of an SD card. I am open to installing different ROMS than Vegan if I have too.
Thanks in advance.
I think there may be some more experienced replies than mine, my experience with the g-tab is still new, however an approach that should work would be to use a mini-sd card in a sleeve, in her camera, then take out the mini-sd and pop that into the g-tab slot. Then you can use the file brower/manager app on the g-tab and browse the mini sd; should be able to just tab an image and show.
Thanks for the reply Riccarr. That sounds like an option but dont want to have to buy all new micro cards unless that is the only option. But I will keep that in mind.
Does anyone else know if its a problem reading jpegs off an sd card through the usb port using a usb card reader? Please share your experiences on viewing pics from a card and if there are any problems I should be ready for. Thanks
I've heard that you can run an SD Card reader off the USB port, in VEGAn 5.11 at least. I've not tried it myself, although I can let you know later tonight as I'm about to head out and buy one.
GoPro HD camera takes an SD card, and I want to be able to view my trackday runs on the tablet while at the track. In glorious HD.
First off I would suggest installing VEGAn-TAB 7.0 instead of earlier Beta version. That's mainly because it is working so well for me. I've had no problems loading .jpg files (of photographs) as well as video files on both the external 16gb micro SD Card and 8gb USB Flash Drive. I've also been able to copy files back and forth between the internal and external SD drives. The USB Flash Drive can be used to copy files to the internal SD drive or to simply use as a second drive to play videos or display photograhs (.jpg files). To copy and paste a file from a drive to go to another drive, simply press and hold the file to be copied and a menu is displayed. Select copy. Then go to the drive and folder you want to paste the file. From the copy/paste notification (press the icon displayed at bottom center) select the file or folder to be pasted. The paste process can be displayed via the notifications window (from the icons on the lower left of the window, press the icon furthest to the right). Curiously enough, the safest place to store and view either videos or .jpg files seems to be the USB Flash Drive. The internal and external SD cards work fine as well, but there does seem to be a problem at times with these files simply disappearing. Good luck.

VEGAn 7.0 RC does work well, and it's arguably the prettiest ROM out there. I've only not gone to it due to the lack of hardware acceleration for video decoding, I'm worried it would result in poor HD playback.
Ok, now on to the card reader. I bought a cheap-o USB reader from Office Depot for $12.99. I'm currently streaming "I am Murloc" from a 2GB Kingston SD card.
Note: The card had to be reformatted in FAT32 for it to work. NTFS will supposedly work for VEGAn as well, but I've not tested if my camera can read either. FAT32 should be safe.
Edit: Spoke too soon. It's working fine as long as I don't put it in the camera. Once it's been in the camera, I can't access it anymore. Not sure why...
Edit 2: Er... ok, now it's working again. Apparently there needs to be something in the root folder for it to pick it up, another folder doesn't work? Will have to test more.

File video deleted on Sd

Did anyone experienced this annoying problem ?
I got twice almost all video files deleted from my microsd card, why ??
Nope! Not had a single problem...
1, what kind of SD card are you using, (Brand, speed)
2, how are you transferring the files to the Flyer.
3, what apps do you have on your Flyer...
Any of the above three may contribute to your problem so a little more info may get some answers...
I used a Microsd HC 32gb Transcend, but I can say that I had a problem like that even with a 16Gb TDK.
I use AndroExplore to surf the folders and I use vPlayer to watch movies.
Essentially I have only avi and mkv files on the card.
I transferred these files connecting flyer to my pc.
The very strange thing is that I have a root directory, and subdir named film, and under this one I've got something like 15 subdir with all the movies.
After the disaster I found all the directories with some of them completely empty and some other with 1 of two files, and the others completely safe.
Very very strange, and I'm really afraid to discover this situation when I will be in vacation next week. This should be a nightmare for me !!!
First thing you want to do is check your microsd for errors. Either remove it, stick it in your computer and run chkdsk /x on it, or hook the flyer up via usb cable, wait for the microsd to mount and run chkdsk /x on it. Then you want to back up the microsd to your computer. With the flyer hooked up via usb, simply drag the ext_sd folder to your hard drive. Microsd card reliability isn't quite there yet; that's why I have my eye on tablets that can take full-size SD cards.

i thought I'm getting crazy, but looks like is real...it happened to me couple weeks ago; some video file was missing, and that time I just ignored....so it happened...
I have a microSD 16GB sandisk class 2.......from long time ago. I think is time for renew...
I don't think it can be only a micro sd problem. When a memory card fail the file remain often incomplete on the memory card. In this case they simply disappear all together. Not one, not a directory...it sounds more about a software bug, in a program like Androexplorer or a video player which scan the sd before showing the list. Is it possible to have a bug like this ??
and what about advanced task killer pro ? I keep it always in memory, but sometimes maybe it is dangerous to use for the temp memory, isn't it ?
Does anybody know if I can set readonly all the files to avoid this problem ?
Do you think it can be a good trick ?
I know this is an old thread but I experienced this same problem just now. OP and I could have a common app that did this by accident (bug).

Can you borrow internal storage for ram use?

Hi Guys, only a quick question really!
Is it possible to use internal storage as ram to boost the memory up a little?
reason i ask is that (for example) windows 7 lets you stick a usb stick in and boost the ram up.
I would have thought that the same could be achieved by some of the developers on here by borrowing some internal storage for use with ram.
( I searched and couldn't find anything that related to this. )

And why would you want to? It would be on the order of magnitudes slower than RAM.
RAM operates in nanoseconds whereas storage operates in milliseconds. (Storage is 1000 times slower..)
Look in the dev section. There is a mod where you can use part of your external sd card as a swap partition.

Siyah kernel supports swap partition. You need to have an external sd card for it. It's only for ics rom right now. More info? Check development section.

It's possible.
Here's how to do it.

I just had a crazy idea that id be able somehow to borrow 1gb from my 32gb card and run 2gb of ram. but if what you explained is correct ill leave it as it is as its not that big an issue, however....... i have Siyah kernel installed already, might have to read up on 'swap partition' hopefully giving me more internal storage for downloading large sized games etc. I keep running out of internal storage memory when downloading games and for some reason on the latest 4.0.4 sammy build i cannot move apps to sd card.
ill have a tinker with swap partition and see how that goes, thanks for your info guys.
A swap partition won't help you download bigger files and all you have to do is download directly to external memory, and it's impossible to move Apps to external memory unless you Root and use App called Directory Bind.

not the only app
there are other apps e.g. app2sd
dark tremors mod allows you to format part of the memory stick as either ext3 and use that to install apps on
this is done automatically on swedish snow which is a rom on zte blade,
i don't know if there is an app to do this on gs3 but it is possible to do it

Nope it's impossible to use any Apps like App2Sd because the external memory now uses ExFat format and mounted as a separate device so can't move the cache like other phones, so only way is to use Directory Bind to use Android's folder Binding function to trick Apps into thinking it's reading from internal memory.

Take a look at another feature Siyah includes; zRAM. It basically reduces(!) your available memory by taking a chunk of it (up to 300MB can be set through STweaks) which is then used with GZip-Compression to create a in-RAM Swap partition.
This is based on the idea that in current phones/computers the CPU is far more powerful than is usually needed, so the performance impact of using it for Swap is not that high. On the other hand you don't save that much RAM - but it certainly helps without crippling down your phone and/or greatly reducing your SSD's capacity

What? No! Unless you have a USB 3.0 or a SATA supported flash memory of some kind, most other means are slower than HDDs which get around 100 mb/s read and write. Compare that to a Class 10 at 10mb/s...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
A solution I use is something somehow similar to app2sd.
To achieve it just crop the first partition of your external sd fitting to the size you want to use as second partition and create an additional partition with a supported format (I personally prefer ext4).
Move the content of your /sdcard/Android folder to the new partition and write a mount script where you mount the /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 device to /sdcard/Android.
Execute it with script manager with su rights and mark on boot and you will gain more internal space for games and apps and only have to worry about moving files if you downloaded to much with the browser or such.

the "mb/s" stat is irrelevant in the case of ReadyBoost, the windows feature that boosts access time of cached files through flash memory on usb stick or memory card...
cant post a link but, wikipedia is your friend
the feature is more of a gimmick than anything else, but its there and it does what it say it does to the extent of its limitations which are very low...
Most Windows computers have HDD's and not like our S3 an SSD.
HDD's are faster than memory sticks ONLY in writing and continuous read (one big file without fragmentation)
Readyboost uses a SSD for small often-read fragments qualifying as random read where even your cheap USB2 stick is by far faster than a hard drive.

more than 4gb single file support (ntfs)

I have this microsd card 64gb SanDisk class 10 and the phone formatted it to fat32 the first time I inserted it.
I download a lot of stuff from my.phone internet like torrent, hd videos, live stream, etc....
the problem is that my phone does not want to save anything more than 4gb and splitting the files is not.possible as I download it directly onto my phone.
afaik, ntfs supports file larger than 4gb. Is there anyway to make my phone support sdcard formatted on ntfs? If so, does it have any drawbacks like poor reliability, performance, program incompatibility, crashes?
Oh boy... Make sure your card is formatted for your phone and not for your computer. From there if you mount as sd card(hard disk mode) it will read as a flash drive and limit the maximum transfer for windows at 4012mb if I'm not mistaken..
however, if you mount as media sync instead of hard disk mode you will be able to drag and drop ANY size file from your pc to phone.

I think you misunderstood what I mean.
first of all, I am not using a pc.or a Mac to download myfiles.
I am downloading everything directly to my.phone by apps such as ttorrent(for torrent stuff), tubemate(for yiutube), flash video downloader add on for Firefox(for flash videos) and etc...
the problem is, I cannot download stuff that is bigger than 4gb(like full 1080p blu ray rip movie, tv shows, pc software and games, etc...)
also, I mostly download stuff when I am on school campus because the internet (free WiFi) there is so much faster than what I have and using a.smartphone.to download is so convinient as it stays on my pocket.
If your going to be downloading 4gb+ files from the internet without a pc middleman then you can't use fat32 on any disk with any given space. You must format to ntfs or ext4. I would use ext4 because windows 7 & android recognizes them and they do not have a 4096mb file limit.
However Some androids won't recognize a ntfs file system. There is an app for that to remount ntfs to ext 4 on the market. But since you use your phone and not your computer I would just format to ext4.

are you 100% sure EVO 4g LTE supports Exfat?
I also heard problems regarding exfat on gs3 being not being able to recognize/read some files.
if my memory.serves me tight, when I bought my SanDisk 64gb class 10 microSD, it is formatted in exfat.but when I plug it to my EVO 4g LTE, it ask to format and it automatically made it fat32

FAT or FAT32 is a different format then usual and this method does restrict file sizes to 4GB max. Also if memory serves, this limits the partition size to 32GB max, so you may now have nearly half of your card un-partitioned. Simply place your card in a card reader and connect to your computer and quick format it to NTFS. I have a 16GB card and have used it since my OG Evo 4G and currently have a 7.8GB .mkv movie file on it. Reads and plays with no problems on my Evo 4G LTE. Hope this helps.

Getting rid of MTP/PTP

Please tell me there is some sort of flashable zip to get rid of MTP/PTP.
If I can't get standard USB mode on this S3 I'm getting rid of it, MTP is like the worst way of connected to a PC in my opinion.
All the downsides are not worth not having to mount / disconect the drive.
*Note : I use my phone for my work, MTP makes doing any one job over twice as long as I have to transfer the file to my pc in order to edit it, then I need to send it back.
With USB disk I just edit the file/photo/video directly on the devices drive, huzzah so much time saved!)
I tried SG3 easy UMS but it doesn't disable MTP with the rom I am using.
ive been lookng for ways to get UMS too. Easy UMS is giving me problems. Sometimes it just doesnt work and no drives MTP nor UMS drives show on my PC.
Im on Omega rom with Perseus kernel.
The storage mode has been removed all together as android no longer really supports it. Even Google has done away with it.

Has been said 1234578 times. No way for internal sdcard, easyUms for external.
That's it. I agree mtp sucks, not working on my Windows 7 computer. Easy ums works well here.
This is where USB OTG comes in handy
Thank you for the replies everyone.
Looks like I'm downgrading to my sensation then
Shall send some dissapointed emails to Google/HTC/Samsung etc though as if they're really trying to make mtp standard that's just silly. (Hell it's bloody useless even for media transfer, I put HD movies on my phone and don't bother optimising them for the phone so they're often rather large files. maximum average transfer I see with MTP is 5MB/s if I use USB disk on my sensation with same SD card I get 15+MB/s)
Shame though as some roms for my note n7000 disable MTP so was hoping the same could be done for the s3 :[
Not a big fan of the emulated SD card as well, just makes finding files in recovery a pain in the arse
If this is the way Android is heading looks like I need to find another smart phone OS D:
One thing that could help me keep the s3 is if I could automate easy UMS so when I connect the phone I get a prompt asking me if I want to mount my sd card. ( if that is already a feature, it doesn't work with slim rom) Don't really care for what ever is on the emulated sd card anyway so don't care if that connects with MTP.
( Please don't suggest I just plug the card into a card reader, I use a alluminium bumper case that bolts on so quick swapping is not possible)

It may have been an option if Samsung had released the proper documentation on this chip like they promised at first but then changed their mind.

i feel the same way about MTP but it's not that BIG a deal. Easy UMS is a good alternative. i had a Sensation as well and you couldn't even access the internal memory, you could only access the memory stick via flash drive. atleast you can access both internal and external sd card using MTP. just put the files on your ext sdcard and use Easy UMS for quick editing of the files. from there you can move the file to your int sdcard using some type of file manager.
