What is the quality of primes on sale now? any better? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I have c2ok prime that i got from John Lewis a while ago.
- Has slight light bleed but I can live with that
- Gps works so so (gets the fix if kept static with clear view but in real life scenario unusable
- wifi weaker than most of other devices I have but usable
- unknown serial no problem...
I was going to keep it for a while and return/replace when something better would come along and unknown serial no alone gives me rights to return it for full refund at any time.
But last weekend bloody micro sd card lock failed for no apparent reason. Best thing is I wasnt even using the slot, just had dummy white micro sd card in it that now will not lock in the place.
So I am thinking two options
a) i give prime another shot, get it replaced by JL and hope for better device.
b) return bugger altogether and wait for something better to come along.
Bearing in mind I am happy to spend £500 on a tablet and dont really use keyboard dock with the prime I am leaning towards B and perhaps elsewhere £500 would stretch to a 3g tablet on its own?
Any suggestions?

Prime RMA for screen issues

Been having problems with my Prime when it is inserted into my dock. The screen is whiting out and is basically unreadable. I just called their Tech Support. Rep had me reset the unit. Same problem occurs. It is a hardware issue, weakness near the charging port. They gave me an RMA # and told me 7-10 business days for the device to be returned back to me. Keep your fingers crossed for me that my Prime comes back in 100% working condition. I will keep you updated on the speed of the repair and any correspondence I get during the time they have my device.

Starting to wonder where ASUS got all their parts quality control seems non existent good luck.
I'm not impressed with the screen on these at all. Yours may not really be a screen issue but more of a connector issue though.
I just returned my second one today. My first had stuck pixels and my second has a weird backlight issue...it looked like if you held a white Christmas light directly behind a sheet of white paper. I keep going back and forth in my head trying to decide how many times i want to go through this.
It isn't as easy as simply waiting for the t700 either. It isn't like asus is going to change their quality control for one tablet and not another. It is kind of funny when people say they are waiting for another asus product due to qc of this tablet. It really is a gamble with each of these.

Anyone that bought a prime from Bestbuy that has no issues?

It seems that all the primes that I have tested from Bestbuy (4 primes and counting) have no satellite locks and only decent wifi. Please only post if you have received a good tablet with no issues from them.
I have purchased two of them from Best Buy, one I received on the 22nd and the other I purchased it two days ago from my local best buy, the first and only one they have received My first one is "perfect", but my 2nd one has two hardly noticeable screen bleeds which are only really distinguishable if you know were to look (bottom left corner under the return arrow and the recent app button) and one would only spot them during the boot up screen. They are both able to acquire a GPS lock, even indoors but once I move it the connection is lost, outside I can walk and it stays connected for the most part; however, I have not really tested the GPS function while driving (I will try it today... if I remember too but I don't have much hope for it which is why I purchased the $5 GPS workaround). They both get good wifi, by this I mean that anywhere my phone (HD7) is in range so are my primes if my phone is out of range so are my primes and they both get about the same speed. No freezing issues... ok the stock web browser does freeze but rarely maybe once every other day or so and most of the time I just hit wait and it comes back to live. Over all I love my primes/prime my first one is busted until Asus unlocks the boot loader, I just hope its before my 45 days are up or I will be stuck with 2 primes
It took both my primes about a good 5min to get a GPS lock with wifi outside, could not get either one to even see a satellite indoors before getting a lock outside. I originally tried to acquire a GPS lock without wifi outside on my 1st prime but gave up after 5 min. I also tried it with my 2nd one but no luck; although it did see around 5-7 satellites after the first 3min and up to 9 satellites at one point but after 10min and no lock I turned on the wifi and got a lock with in a minute. After that I was able to get a lock indoors with in 3-5 min
Bought from best buy december 23, no problems at all.

No problems with mine.
None of the common problems
I got mine from BB.com about 2 weeks ago. The device was working 100% fine. GPS was solid, WIFI was great. There was a tiny bit of screen leak in the lower corners, but nothing that I could not live with.
The "un-common" problem occurred when I got my dock...also from BB.com. When I inserted the tablet into the dock the screen would white out, almost like it had its brightness turned up to 1000. I was also able to replicate the problem out of the dock by placing minor pressure at the center of the bottom bezel near the charging port. I have RMA'd it and just put it on a UPS truck today. I will let everyone know how I make out.
Bought mine from Best Buy. Outside of the GPS issue mine is great. WiFi seems fine...on par with my phone/laptop, so no complaints.
Bought mine no wifi,no gps issue, but a tiny bit of screen bleed, but i can live with that. Got my keyboard but i returned it., dont really need one
Proud owner of Transformer Prime TF201
Received mine yesterday from BB online... not problems as of yet. Haven't had the chance to fully test the GPS. I've looked closely and can't find any dead pixels or screen bleed. No creaks in the chassis, and on wifi at home was getting 18mbit down, 5 up (which is about right, I pay for 20mbit down 5mbit up)
No issues here, it has worked great
Aside from some very minor light bleeding on the right side of the screen, no problems at all.
No issues with mine. I did think that the prime was a tad slower browsing the internet than the OG transformer, but seems to have been cleared after the updates.
...but the OG transformer was running Revolver, oc'd...
Mine is fine.
Tablet & dock from BB.com.

Good to hear. Im going on my third next week from Bestbuy, I thought since they havent had any instock, all the stock in the warehouse for OMS orders are from the same batch. So there is still hope.
Just out of curiosity why are you asking if BB ones are good or not since they all come from asus directly? I'd would worry more about first batch vs 2nd batch.
I got one from BB.com around Jan 12. The screen seems good, no bleed or dead pixels, bt/wifi speed drop seems to be in line with what would be expected, and GPS performs as expected. GPS is not great but does get a lock, though it loses the lock when driving.
I'm not sure about the WIFI performance though. It is fast when signal is strong but when I get near the edge of its range it drops out dramatically faster than either my phone or my old viewsonic gtablet. The TFP gets <1mbps while the gtab still gets >10mbps. Does this sound in line with what other users are getting, or would a replacement possibly fix the issue? The signal strength according to WIFI Analyser is about the same from all three devices when doing the test. If this is the expected performance I'll be returning it to wait for the TF700 later this year. I'd rather get one that works well now though, as it is a great device and I could care less about the higher res screen and camera.
I, no issues form my BB purchase, aside from the weak gps obviously.
Bought mine from best buy before the new year and have had absolutely no issues at all. Wifi has been great (picks up college wifi which at my school has a history of being ****ty). Gps I only tested once, which was the same day I got it, and it never completely connected. Keep in mind that was indoors. I never would use GPS on my tablet so idc. But besides that no screen bleeding or tearing. Got the dock as well and must say I love this tablet. Much faster and not even comparable build quality to my old Gtab 10.1. My only complaint is I wish the micro SD card slot was actually built so it could hold a micro SD card all the time, but oh well I'm happy

I did until I bricked it
Purchased another Prime from Micro Center yesterday. I'm not sure yet it's as responsive as the one I had from BB.

[Q] Student thinking of buying a Prime

Heeello. This weekend I'll be returning my Galaxy Tab 7.7 because of Super AMOLED screen burn-in issues and I may buy a Prime. The thing is I'll have to keep it for over a good year and I was wondering if the Prime has any major problems that I should know of. Also I can't be returning the Prime more than once because ,well, I'm 15 and thus obviously dependent on my parent. It's a hassle constantly going back to the store and I've already bought a Toshiba Tab (which I gave to my mother), bought a Galaxy Tab 7.7 that I'm about to return and might buy a Prime in the process. Obviously this is a bit 'intense' I guess for a teenager haha. So basically I would really rather not have to return the Prime plus I'll have to be keeping it for a year if I'm to buy it.
I'm aware of GPS issues which won't bother me because I don't own a vehicle and any navigation would be done in the house, where I can rely on Wifi or a laptop.
I heard that the Wifi has been patched for the most part, and I'll generally be within 15 metres of my router. I've also heard that turning on bluetooth and wifi at the same time would degrade the wifi signal but I won't be using bluetooth too often, just for the occasional photo or file transfer. So is the Wifi issue really that big of a deal? Any insight would be great.
Now about the reboots. Sleep issues (where you would put the tab to sleep, and you would have to completely turn it back on, dubbed Sleep of Death lol) were a big problem with the Toshiba Thrive and I've also been having random turn offs with the GT 7.7 I was wondering if Asus has patched the Prime or if it was never that big of a problem on this tablet.
Also what about hardware issues? Are there any commonly known hardware issues that I should be aware of? And if there are, would it be possible to check for those issues before I leave the store?
If anyone could address these 3 issues, or any others that I should be aware of it would be greaaatly appreciated. Any advice on wether I should buy a Prime or just get store credit or something would be nice too. I'll be going this weekend and I don't really get buyers remorse so I won't be waiting for new and exciting tablets. Plus I'm confident of Asus support. So advice before this weekend. ^^ Thankyou.
I won't be getting the TF700 variant (the 1920x1200 one) because that won't be released until September here in Australia.
Sorry If I come off as annoying or ignorant. :x
maybe youre lucky to get a prime in good condition..
but dont count on it..
Software issues will be fixed sooner or later. Wifi is most likely both software AND a hardware issue..
but things like wifi, gps, light bleed are pretty random.. some have good ones, some have bad ones..
I got one, with the newest serial (C20xx) and had to return it.

Hm. I found a video by MobileTechReview that said squeezing the top of the Prime would help with Wifi and GPS as the connectors are located there, and the reason for poor wifi may be partially that the connector pins aren't contacting enough. So I assume by now I should be in the clear for wifi but what about light bleed? Does light bleed take some time to appear or would I be able to check it before I leave the store?

Before I buy...

I am about to buy this tablet...
But now I see a lot of threats here with many issues...
So now I am a little worried about this tablet instead of excited...
Question:
Is this tablet any good at all, or is it just bad quality all together ?
Would you rather have bought a different tablet, knowing what you know now ?

Having only had it mine for a week, I've had 0 issues. Build quality seems exceptional on my 32gb WiFi model.
I personnaly tried many tablet, it's just a confort for design and power, it's just the best for me, i was htc addict and now i love Sony
I found the build quality to be very shoddy on the one I got, and I did end up returning it. The backing was coming unstuck, the screen flexed, there was a shadow along the bottom edge of the screen, a dead pixel, erratically sensitive screen, the breaking of Firefox Sync by the OS and these diagonal lines on the screen that really annoyed me.
However, I don't regret being able to try it, and Sony Canada made it very easy for me to return. If I had gotten a non-defective one, I would have been reasonably happy and waited for the Firefox Sync issue to be fixed.
If your excitement still outweighs your misgivings, just make sure wherever you buy it from has a good return policy and, better still, lets you open it up in-store and make sure the more common hardware issues (unsticking back, flexing screen, non-flush port covers) are absent.
Good luck.
i'm a little biased because i got mine with my sony card rewards points (and the 32gb model for 480 dollars worth of rewards points at that), but i'm definitely disappointed in this wifi vs bluetooth issue. no one seems to be able to figure it out and there are tons of people with the issue. basically once a device is connected via bluetooth, the wifi dies. it shows its still connected with a strong signal, but nothing will load. if i had paid cash and didn't have a sony card, i'd probably have returned it by now... which sucks because otherwise i really love the thing.
Very pleased with my model. SGP311.
No build issues, WIFI issues or anywhere else for that matter. Have used several tablets and this is the only one I've stuck with.
One very happy customer - highly recommended.
Has there ever been a device released without issues? Just protect yourself by always buying from a place with a convenient return policy, especially if you're spending this much money. Or buy at a place with the longest return policy (generally 14 days I think), and see how you like it for yourself.

This is the best tablet I have ever had. No regrets. Even though I have had a few wifi issues where it disconnects, it reconnects quickly. Plus it only happens when I am fairly far away from the router.
I ordered mine directly from Sony (a US 312). I've noticed no build issues (much nicer than my Nexus 10 actually) or wifi problems. Rooting was easy, and after freezing the stuff I don't use, I'm getting a solid 10 to 12 hours or use out of it between charges. I'm using the charging doc (to avoid the micro USB port) as well as the Sony case (which is overpriced but still very nice). Best tablet I've used.
Regards,
John Francis
Apart from battery taking really too long to fully recharge (6 hours) I can't complain about this tablet. Everything works as it should. I totally recommend it!
The only problem i am having is my computer will not recognized the tablet what so everrrr
Hi people,
I hope the OP don't mind me jumping aboard his thread with questions on my own.
I'm in the market for a tablet too (my first one) I recently bought a Galaxy Note 10.1 for my wife and I'm thinking about this one for myself.
My only concern is the WiFi issue since I'll buy it in the US but then I'll take it out of the Country so return it would not be possible.
How common is this issue?
I read some people saying it's not the tablet, but the router and setting should be changed while others say that Sony CS told them to return the tablet for an exchange (admiting then that the problem is in their product).
Changing settings on my own router would be possible (if that in fact solves the problem) but what about if you are using other sources like WiFi in public places?
Since I'll be using WiFi more than anything, should I buy this with confidence or should I go for other options? After all I think the major point that draws me to this tablet is the video quality (is it that noticeable compared with other tablets?)
Thanks for any input,
I dont know how some people got thier xtz with problems when i got mine with zero issues..
Anyway, stop asking bro and get one, if our life is a game this could be a weapon of mass destruction lol

I am returning mine. The thing won't charge, in fact it looses battery, when its plugged in and in use. I had the Time Warner Cable app on and had tv on in the background. The thing was plugged in. After a few hours the tablet died. Ridiculous.

My life might be a game but if it involves throwing $500 to the bin then I don't want to play...

Thanks for sharing I'm more linning to look for something else then.
If I was able to return it then I might gamble but I'm already stuck with another electronic I bought and I can't return because "the airline does not allow to transport anything with lithium batteries"

Anyway, im not forcing you to get one just saying.. Its up to you..
Are you guys buying it from sony site? I got mine from amazon cause sony doesnt have a 1day delivery offer for me..
Amazon is "not that bad" no issues on the box or anything that will make me disappointed.. The only thing that i dont like is that they use a 1A7 type box which is kind of big for the tablets box and instead of bubble wrap its just some kind of paper like thing.. So if you shake the amazon box you can hear thr package inside.. But if we're talking about the tablets packaging, its fine

I don't have the charging issue with mine, or at the very least it isn't as pronounced. I did recently run into this issue with my Note 2 and it was because of the ROM and kernel combo I was running, it wasn't allowing the phone to charge as fast as it would on stock. That may have been the users problem, it may just be he has a crappy battery in his that needs to be replaced. I haven't noticed any big issues with mine, I have had it for a little over a month and a half, except for the screen pressure click that happens when you hold it awkwardly and it causes the screen to flex and your screen will click even though you didn't touch it because its reading the presses coming through from the back. That's because its so thin though.

[Q] To buy or not to buy?

So I feel like I need a new toy...I've been tossing up whether to upgrade my phone or maybe get this tablet. Previously I've had all the Samsung phones...S1, S2, Note1 & 2 an now S3. On th3 tablet front though I've only had the TF101 with dock...it was OK but now mainly serves as a transfer device between phone and HDD since I dont have an actual PC. The performance issues were probably the most troubling issue I had with it. More Ram faster processor. ..good for its first gen experi3nce but thats it.
So my question really is do you recommend this tablet since time with your purchase? If not why not? I can deal with pesky lil annoyances but as a whole has your experience been enjoyable and not regretful? My purchase is literally a walk across the road...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
you have to think hard about this actually cause the tablet z is completely different than the tf101 with the dock
you'll need a bluetooth keyboard to retain the physical keyboard if that was something major to you
other than that i love the tablet so far only headache for me is the wireless issue but hopefully when i get back to school it'll work flawlessly with my router at school
I went from a TF101 with a dock myself to an SGP321 and I've got to tell you the performance and screen more than makes up for the lack of a physical keyboard and thus also a shorter battery life.
Remember how you get 16 hours of use at best out of the TF101 with the docking station? My SGP321 does around 8-9 with everything turned on and no power save except for brightness on auto (way too bright for night use otherwise). If I leave it on standby like this it will last for days.
In short, I'm not regretting the SGP321 at all (and LTE is a nice bonus even though my current provider only offers HSPA+).
I'm coming off a tf201 with dock and while there are some things I could miss with that combo the reality was I never really used it the way I thought. I back up all my files to a portable USB drive and the intent was to access that whenever I needed to, the reality is I also back them up to my server and it was almost always easier to log on and download from there. As for performance, there is no comparison, the Sony beats it hands down. I upgraded the Primes ROM to the latest Wookie rev which extended the life but there were so many other issues like lack of GPS, wifi connectivity etc, I've never experienced any wifi issues with the Sony, it is 5G capable and locks on to the AP without hesitation. The HDMI resolution is not as good as the Prime and it is noticeable, the Prime was HD, this is not but I can live with it.
Some of the pita issues are the port covers, I guess but it's still a pain except for the micro sd, it's good to have that covered as I lost a 32gb card out of the Prime. I also like the ability to lock the screen by closing the case like the ipads do, not possible on the Prime so that's a nice addition. The battery is not a big and takes longer to charge but at least you can do that via the usb port with just about any charger, the prime was cable and charger specific. The other pain was getting root and mostly that was my problem, I couldn't get past the ADB server out of date issue and finally diagnosed that to the Samsung adb drivers, I'd always unplug the phone when working on the Z so never saw them listed, only by mistake leaving both in did see it an once updated problem solved so now I have root and can restore via titanium.
I also have accumulated lots of Samsung products and have a SG3 which is the best phone I've ever used so was looking forward to their next generation slates, wow did they miss the mark. Here Sony is trying to give you good value and I think they succeed, it's fast and now fun to use again, highly recommended.
